How to shop for home speakers

Your speakers are the most important link in your home audio chain. After all, they make the sound.

Below you’ll find some shopping tips and category definitions. For more detailed info, read our home speaker buying guides.

Most home speakers need a separate amplifier. But now some models have their amplification built in. These include:

Portable Bluetooth

® speakers

Battery-powered Bluetooth speakers stream tunes from your smartphone, tablet, or computer. There are compact models that fit in your backpack. Larger ones are perfect for hanging out at the pool or the campground. Many models are dirt-proof and waterproof.

Wireless home speakers

Unlike portable Bluetooth speakers, these must be plugged into an AC outlet. They connect to your phone via Bluetooth, or to your network through Wi-Fi®. Many of these speakers offer app control for switching sources, picking songs, and adjusting volume. Some (like Sonos, Bluesound, HEOS, and MusicCast) are designed to function as part of a wireless multi-room audio system.

Powered stereo speakers

A pair of powered stereo speakers gives you the kind of listening experience the artists worked hard to create. The built-in amplifier is usually housed in one of the two speakers. The left and right speakers then connect to each other with an included wire. Most models have inputs for stereo source components such as a CD player or turntable. Some offer Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth connections.

Sound bars

Like the name implies, sound bars are horizontal enclosures designed to sit below your TV. Your TV’s built-in speakers pale in comparison. You’ll hear crisp clear dialogue and dynamic sound effects. Watch a lot of movies? Look for a bar that can simulate surround sound. Many sound bars include a wireless subwoofer for deep bass. And some let you play music through a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection.

Computer speakers

Also known as desktop speakers or multimedia speakers, computer speakers are designed for “near-field” listening. That means they sound good when you’re sitting up close. Some models have Bluetooth for wireless connection to your laptop. And some have a built-in digital-to-analog converter, which greatly improves the sound of the music coming from your computer.

Smart speakers

What makes a speaker smart? Wi-Fi connectivity and a built-in voice assistant like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Powered subwoofers

A powered subwoofer adds powerful bass to most any stereo or home theater system. They easily connect to any receiver, amplifier, or powered stereo speakers that have a subwoofer output.

Non-powered speakers, formerly known simply as “speakers,” require an external amplifier or receiver. This group includes the following types:

Floor-standing speakers

Also known as tower speakers, floor-standing speakers are just the ticket for large rooms and anyone who lives life out loud. Their large enclosures help tower speakers deliver more bass than their smaller bookshelf cousins.

Bookshelf speakers

Want clear, detailed sound from a compact set of speakers? Look at bookshelf speakers. Perfect for stereo music systems, they’re also good for the front or rear channels of a home theater system.

Center channel speakers

The center channel of a home theater system is full of important sounds, including most of what the actors have to say. That’s why you’d be wise to get a good center channel speaker. Look for one that’s “voice matched” with your left and right speakers. That means all three speakers should all be from the same brand and the same series within the brand and series.

Surround speakers

Surround speakers create the dramatic sonic envelope that makes home theater so much fun. Placed beside and/or behind you, they transport you into the story unfolding on your big-screen TV. What kind of speakers work as surround speakers? Good question! The most popular options are bookshelf speakers, in-wall speakers, and special bipole/dipole models that fire sound in multiple directions. Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers provide overhead sound effects by bouncing sound off your ceiling.

Surround sound speaker systems

The easy way to get a well-matched home theater speaker setup is to buy a prepackaged 5- or 6-piece system. All these bundles include front left and right speakers, a center channel speaker, and two surround speakers. Most also include a powered subwoofer.

Outdoor speakers

Weather-resistant speakers help you bring the joy of music to your outdoor living spaces. You can install speakers on an exterior wall above your deck or patio. Or scatter them throughout your landscape. Some are disguised as rocks, so they blend in to your garden scenery. You can even get an outdoor subwoofer to accentuate the bass.

In-wall speakers

Want great sound without the clutter of conventional speakers? Consider in-wall speakers. Most are paintable. Basic models are designed to install vertically and are perfect for background music. Some are purpose-built for hidden home theater and can mount horizontally for use on the center channel.

Ceiling speakers

Want music flowing throughout your home like light from the windows? Ceiling speakers are the answer. They’re even less conspicuous than in-wall models. Wondering how many you need to adequately cover your listening spaces? Contact our A/V Design team for help with a system plan.

On-wall speakers

Most bookshelf speakers can be mounted on a wall. But this special collection consists mainly of speakers that were designed with wall mounting in mind.

Speaker wire

Passive speakers use speaker wire to connect to their source of amplification. Our speaker wire guide has detailed information on choosing the right wire for your speakers.

Speaker stands and brackets

Bookshelf speakers usually sound much better when you place them on stands. Wall-mounting is a good option for surround speakers. You may use brackets for that.

Subwoofer cables

You’ll need a subwoofer cable to connect your powered subwoofer to your receiver’s subwoofer output. Many stereo receivers and amps also have subwoofer outputs. For more information, read our article on subwoofer setup.

top-11 rating according to KP

Listening to music is a pleasant experience. But it is also important to choose the right technique in order to feel the composition in full force. A good sound system can provide a good musical rest. This, as a rule, is a large multimedia device – speakers, amplifier, subwoofer, which allows you to listen to your favorite songs in high quality and can work both independently and, for example, in conjunction with a computer or phone, player or other multimedia device. Fans of noisy parties, it definitely will not hurt.

The best acoustics for the home in 2023 are represented on the market quite extensively. Let’s talk about the most interesting options.

Editor’s Choice

ProAc Response DT8

ProAc Response DT8. Photo: market.yandex.ru

In the 1990s, Response was very popular in the Hi-Fi/High End industry. It has everything you need to provide yourself with high-quality musical accompaniment.

The frequency response of the model lies within the range recommended by experts from 38 to 30,000 Hz. Despite a nominal impedance of just 4 ohms, the DT8s are not overly demanding on amplifiers.

They have a fairly high sensitivity – 90 dB – so most models in a similar price category can easily cope with them. There are two bands of acoustic design here – bass-reflex, which combines high sound quality and impressive volume, and passive.

The devices of this manufacturer are distinguished by a beautiful and high-quality finish. One column weighs 26 kg. The design is floor-standing and will look great beautifully in any corner of the house.

Key features
Speaker type front speaker
Acoustic design bass reflex type
Maximum frequency 30000 Hz
Impedance 4 ohms
Pros and cons

Good sound quality, great design, compatible with different types of amplifiers

Bright finishes can get dirty. There are not enough “grills” (protective grilles) in the kit – this increases the risk of damage to the speaker

This is a “monitor” acoustic, it is perfect for those who are planning or already playing music professionally. How to choose acoustics for your home

Before buying a speaker system, you need to study its characteristics. How to choose acoustics for the home, “Komsomolskaya Pravda” was told by the consultant of the household appliances store Vasily Ignatiev .

First you need to determine the format of the installation of acoustics. What do you need? Speakers on shelves? System on the floor? Maybe the acoustics need to be hung on the ceiling or built into the wall? Choose a place to install the system and start from it, which model, what sizes you need. You also need to pay attention to the type of model, sensitivity, frequency range and impedance, the number of bands and the materials from which the device is made.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of acoustics should I choose – active or passive?

These are the two main types of speakers. The first are speakers with a built-in amplifier. They work without additional devices. If you do not like to adjust the sound and look for some solutions, then this option will suit you. Passive speakers need an amplifier or speaker cables. This is probably more an option for those who are fond of music, like to experiment with sound, set up the perfect one, and not just want to arrange a powerful disco.

Why monitor acoustics?

This option is interesting for those who professionally work with music in the recording studio. Monitor are speakers and subwoofers with the most even amplitude-frequency response. They are both passive and active with a built-in amplifier.

How many bands do you need for a good speaker?

Ideal acoustics, as often described, consists of a single full-range speaker with a full frequency range of 20-20,000 Hz. But more often the acoustics are divided into two bands, and sometimes more. One band, as a rule, is low-frequency, the other is high-frequency. If there is a third, then it is mid-frequency. Many bands sound better, but this isn’t exactly a homemade option.

Currently, the concept of “budget” in relation to audio equipment does not mean at all – bad. Modern production technologies are at such a high level that even in the budget segment you can pick up a decent option. This is proved by the presented review of high-quality acoustics, which includes the best, according to PULT.ru experts, budget acoustic systems.

The list presented is not a Hi-Fi acoustics rating 2020. This is just a list of devices with their pros and cons that you can pay attention to when choosing a powerful speaker system for your home at an affordable price.

8. Elac Debut B5 – the second generation of the award-winning bookshelf speaker

Features

Impedance: 6 ohm | Sensitivity: 86 dB/W/m | Speaker Terminals: Single | Dimensions: 34 x 18 x 23 cm (H x W x D) | Tweeter: 2.5cm fabric dome | Mid/bass: 5.25cm aramid fiber | Type: bookshelf acoustics | Acoustic design: with bass reflex | Frequency range: 46-35000 Hz | Number of lanes: 2 | Number of speakers: 2 | | Power max: 120W.

Pros:

  • easy installation;
  • good sound;
  • rugged housing

Cons;

  • lacks scale and dynamism.

This bookshelf speaker with aramid fiber cone has received rave reviews from professionals and users alike. It delivers expressive highs, blends smooth mids with rhythm, and sounds impressive overall. The second generation model received new speakers, for which a more rigid and durable MDF cabinet was specially created. Compared to the previous version, it features improved damping, which means that there is much less distortion.

This hi-fi system for the home is not capricious in terms of installation. Speakers sound best at some distance from the wall – about 30 centimeters, but in each case, to achieve the most effective balance, you should experiment a little. Another undoubted merit of these speakers is the ability to create a wide dense musical scene, regardless of the angle of their turn to the viewer.

7. Dali SPEKTOR 2 – new acoustics with high-quality sound at an affordable price

Specifications

Impedance: 6 ohm | Sensitivity: 85 dB/W/m | Speaker Terminals: Single | Dimensions: 29 x 17 x 24 cm (H x W x D) | Tweeter: 25mm soft dome | Woofer: 13 cm, wood fiber | Type: bookshelf acoustics | Acoustic design: with bass reflex | Frequency range: 54-26000 Hz | Number of lanes: 2 | Number of speakers: 2 | | Power max: 100W.

Pros:

  • wide sound stage and excellent driver dispersion;
  • preservation of sound signature even at the lowest volume;
  • holds bass well;
  • three colors

Cons:

Presented acoustics is an enlarged version of its predecessor. It has a wider bass range and higher sound pressure. The speakers produce a dynamic, well-saturated sound and are excellent as a stereo system for medium-sized rooms where it is not possible to place floor acoustics.

The speaker cabinets are made of MDF with an ash, walnut or white finish. Their special technical “chip” is a wide radiation pattern. The designers managed to achieve this due to the shape of the front panel and high-quality speakers. In addition, they are very “friendly” to connected amplifiers and do not require too high conducted powers to form a normal sound pressure. In numerous tests and reviews of Dali Spektor 2, experts note another merit of this acoustics. It demonstrates a fairly stable impedance, despite the relatively low sensitivity. This quality helps to produce good sound when paired with even the most budgetary options for amplifiers or AV receivers.

6. Monitor Audio Bronze 2 – Best Value Hi-Fi Speakers

Specifications

Impedance: 6 Ohm | Speaker Terminals: Single | Mid-Frequency Driver: 16.5cm C-CAM | Tweeter: 25mm C-CAM | Sensitivity: 90dB/W/m | Dimensions: 35 x 18.5 x 25.5 cm (H x W x D) | Type: bookshelf acoustics | Acoustic design: with bass reflex | Frequency range: 42-30000 Hz | Number of lanes: 2 | Number of speakers: 2 | | Power max: 100W.

Pros:

  • rich, warm sound;
  • excellent high frequencies;
  • good dynamics

Cons:

  • there is no possibility of high-quality listening in the night mode;
  • audio system demanding installation

“An undying classic in a revolutionary performance” – this is how experts call Monitor Audio Bronze 2 acoustics in reviews. Both heads have been modified in it, where only branded diaphragms, made of aluminum-magnesium alloy with a high-quality ceramic coating – C-CAM, remained, and everything else is innovation. The mid/bass speaker received a concave cone with a modified frame, which lacks the usual hole with a dust cover. These innovations increase the rigidity of the design, increase the radiation area and provide precise control of the upper part of the range. The gold-plated dome tweeter has a new ventilation system that reduces distortion, improves dynamics, and effectively suppresses mechanical resonances.

Experts note that in general, this classic two-way shelf audio system is not inferior to small-sized floor acoustics in terms of the breadth of its range and sound saturation. It is capable of working as part of stereo systems without a subwoofer, and, of course, is also great as a home theater front stereo pair.

5. B&W 607 Black – compact, great sounding model for small spaces

Impedance: 4-8 ohms | Speaker terminals: Bi-wurable | Mid/Bass Driver: 13cm Continuum | Tweeter: 25 mm aluminum | Sensitivity: 84 dB/W/m | Dimensions: 30 x 20. 7 x 23 cm (H x W x D) | Type: bookshelf acoustics | Acoustic design: with bass reflex | Frequency range: 40-33000 Hz | Number of lanes: 2 | Number of speakers: 2 | | Power max: 100W.

Pros:

  • dynamic, energetic sound;
  • pure sound

Cons:

  • Demanding location

The damped speaker cabinets are crafted from MDF in a sleek black and white design with sleek metal speaker surrounds. The speakers are equipped with a low-frequency, sufficiently productive speaker, the size of which is 130 millimeters, with a proprietary Continuum cone. Such woofers are able to reproduce fast and deep bass, almost completely free from distortion. The woofer is mounted on a molded basket, which eliminates the appearance of distortion and coloration of the sound even at the highest volume, and the most powerful magnetic system provides a high level of sensitivity and instant response to changes in sound signals.

Noteworthy is the Flowport phase inverter. Its design is patented. It is located on the back of the speakers. All this, of course, affects the sound quality and makes these speakers in demand.

4. Mission QX-2 – great design and amazing sound for the price

Specifications

Sensitivity: 88 dB/W/m | Impedance: 8 Ohm | Maximum power: 120W | Mid/Woofer: 15cm cellulose/acrylic | Tweeter: 38 mm ring radiator | Speaker Terminals: Single | Dimensions: 32 x 22 x 31 cm (H x W x D), | Type: bookshelf acoustics | Acoustic design: with bass reflex | Frequency range: 25-22000 Hz | Number of lanes: 2 | Number of speakers: 2 | | Power max: 120W.

Pros:

  • Energetic, penetrating sound with good bass;
  • good dynamics and drive;
  • impeccable build quality and finish

Cons:

  • needs more breathing space

Attractive design with beautiful aluminum plates in the upper and lower parts of the cabinets and a slightly aggressive appearance of these speakers are far from all that attracts acoustics to this model and makes it popular. The main advantage is the coherence of the sound, which is achieved thanks to the already traditional driver placement when the tweeter is under the mid/bass driver.

The speakers of this device are quite unusual. The tweeter is made in the form of a 38 mm ring radiator with an original phasing core. The reverse wave from the diaphragm is directed to special rear chambers, which exclude the appearance of resonances. And the mid/bass driver has a cone made of high quality materials without a dust cover. Such design solutions make the sound clearer and fuller.

3. KEF Q350 – perfectly clear sound without embellishment

Features.

Speaker terminals: Single | Driver: 16.5cm UniQ mid/bass with integrated 25mm aluminum dome tweeter | Sensitivity: 87dB/W/m | Impedance: 8 Ohm | Dimensions: 35.8 x 21 x 30 cm (H x W x D) | Type: bookshelf acoustics | Acoustic design: with bass reflex | Frequency range: 63-28000 Hz | Number of lanes: 2 | Number of speakers: 2 | Power max: 120W.

Pros:

  • high definition and detailed sound;
  • excellent voice reproduction;
  • attractive design

Cons:

  • demanding location;
  • some difficulties in the selection of amplifier

Sophistication – this is how the KEF Q350 speaker system can be described in one word. Reviews of this system always note that every, even the smallest of its details is carefully worked out in order to achieve maximum purity and detail of the sound, which in this system is distinguished by extraordinary sterility. Columns work on the principle, “what was given to the input, then reproduced.” They convey to the listener every nuance of sound, every note, without changing anything and decorating. You can even talk about unemotional sound. Whether this is good or bad, each listener will decide for himself. The tuning of the innovative Uni-Q transducer is made so precisely that the boundaries between the ranges seem to be erased.

The undoubted advantages of this acoustics include the scale of the sound, which is able to fill the entire space of the room with a clear, detailed sound. There are also disadvantages. Speakers require a verified installation. If you put them too close to the wall, extraneous noise and a characteristic hum will appear. But in general, the acoustics are excellent, which is reflected in its popularity, expressed in the number of sales.

2. Dali Oberon 1 – a small high quality speaker with an unassuming character

Features.

Sensitivity: 86dB/W/m | Impedance: 6 Ohm | Maximum power: 100W | Woofer: 13cm wood / fiber | Tweeter: 29 mm soft dome | Dimensions: 27 x 16 x 23 cm (H x W x D) | Speaker terminals: single | Type: bookshelf acoustics | Acoustic design: with bass reflex | Maximum frequency 26000 Hz | Number of lanes: 2 | Number of speakers: 2 | Power max: 100W.

Pros:

  • high sound quality in a small size;
  • good reproduction of voice parts;
  • high build quality;
  • good compatibility with
  • amplifiers

Cons:

  • limited bass depth

Bookshelf minispeakers, despite their very modest size, can surprise with excellent sound quality. The developers of this audio equipment were able to turn its small size into a virtue. The fact is that the small, damped speaker cabinet, together with high-quality drivers, provide a wide sound picture with precisely spaced images. This speaker is great for both small rooms and home theater rear channels.
