How to shop for 10 Inch Subwoofers

Whether you’re listening to melodic jazz or booming hip-hop, you need a subwoofer to hear the full body of the music. Nimble 10″ subwoofers deliver powerful punch, thanks to their super-fast cone speed. And today’s models can handle plenty of power.

Important details for choosing a 10″ subwoofer

There are a few pointers below, but read our subwoofer buying guide for more advice and tips on choosing your subs.

Voice coils – Subwoofers have either one or two voice coils. This important feature greatly impacts the sub’s performance in your audio system. Dual voice coil subs are popular among enthusiasts because they offer more flexibility when wiring the bass system.

Power rating – How much power do you need to make the subwoofer(s) sound their best? The closer your amplifier’s power output is to the sub’s max RMS power rating (not the peak power), the better it will sound.

Impedance – Most subwoofers are rated at 4 ohms impedance, but 2-ohm and 8-ohm subwoofers are also available.

When you’ve chosen a subwoofer, look for an amplifier that matches the sub in terms of impedance and power rating. If you need any help, our Advisors are just a phone call or chat away.

Popular questions customers ask

The larger the woofer, the deeper the bass. A 12″ sub will play louder and deeper than a 10″ sub. A single subwoofer is all it takes to reinforce your music, but if you’re looking for volume, then two subs are certainly louder than one.

A sealed enclosure will sound tighter and more accurate. A ported (or vented) enclosure makes the bass louder, with more boom, but with a slight loss of accuracy. A bandpass box is a combination of those two designs for even more output in a narrow frequency range.

It’s simple. A subwoofer gives you more bass, reproducing lower frequencies that your other speakers can’t deal with. And subs aren’t just for “bassheads.” Filling out those lower frequencies will make any kind of music sound better. At Crutchfield, we love to see that look of surprise and joy on someone’s face the first time they hear a sub in their vehicle!

First, figure out where a sub will fit. If you have limited space, consider a small powered sub. You’ll be surprised how much bass you’ll get. Also, what are your plans for your sound system? A small sub and amp will work great for adding some bass to a factory radio, but if you have plans to expand your system, go with the biggest sub that’ll fit.

Yes, all subs need an amplifier. Some subs even come with an amp built-in (called “powered subwoofers”), so you don’t have to match the sub to the amp. If you prefer to customize your system, make sure to get an amp that’s powerful enough for your sub. The more bass you want, the more power you’ll need.

Choosing a Guitar Cabinet | Muzmart.com

What associations will you have if the phrase “guitar cabinet” is heard in your presence in a conversation? If your life interests do not cover music, then most likely you will imagine something like a special room in which a guitarist rehearses. If you are a musician (albeit a beginner), then these words will definitely not become a mystery to you. So, having understood what will be discussed, let’s look at what guitar cabinets are, and arm ourselves with the recommendations of experts on how to choose the perfect cabinet for your musical activity.

The guitar cabinet is an acoustic system for reproducing guitar sound, consisting of a cabinet and speaker/speakers. This device is used both separately and together with an external amplifier (“head”), on which the choice of timbre color, directivity and sound power will depend.

In addition to the design of the cabinet and speaker model, the external and internal design features of the cabinet, the wood used, and even the material from which the front mesh is made, will also have a significant impact on the generated sound. That is, in fact, any “little thing” that characterizes the cabinet will eventually be reflected in the sweet voice of your electric guitar!

Although the cabinet is a fairly simple device, no worthy replacement has yet been found among a wide selection of other acoustic systems. This lack of alternatives has developed due to a number of features of the guitar sound. And so in the world of professional music, guitar cabinets have their own special requirements.

Main characteristics of guitar cabinets

Frequency. Multimedia speakers provide a frequency range of 20 – 20,000 Hz. For guitar speakers, due to the characteristics of the transmitted signal, this range narrows to 20 – 8000 Hz. One of the important tasks of guitar speakers is to get rid of high-frequency “garbage” that is harmful to the sound of an electric guitar.

Impedance (speaker impedance). More often, speakers with an impedance of 8 ohms are used, less often – 16 ohms (and very rarely – 4 ohms). There is a strict rule: the resistance produced by the amp must be less than or equal to the resistance of the speaker. For example, a speaker with an impedance of 8 or 16 ohms is compatible with an 8 ohm amplifier. Another rule: a speaker with less resistance will be more sensitive and louder.

Cabinet body. Since a guitar cabinet operates under conditions of constant sound pressure and vibration, it is quite logical that the requirement for increased strength is placed on its body. Multi-layered plywood does a good job with the task – it is durable and does not tend to rattle when loud music is played.

Speaker size. 6-, 8-, and 10-inch speakers are currently available, but the 12-inch size is still the standard for guitar cabinet speakers. Why are small speakers so unpopular? The answer is simple: yes, they are cheaper (if you are extremely concerned about the cost), but they are also quiet, which means it will be more difficult for you to detect mistakes made in the game by ear. For the unassuming dilettante, it may be fine, but for the ambitious musician, it is better to choose the 12-inch size initially.

Speaker power. With power, everything is very clear: more powerful means louder. But at the same time, do not forget about one important nuance: you don’t want your speaker to burn out stupidly and insultingly on one “beautiful” day – its power should not be less than the power output by the amp!

Number of speakers. We have already noted above that the regalia of the cabinet standard has been assigned to a 12-inch speaker. Accordingly, by the number of speakers, cabinets can most often be found as follows: 1×12″, 2×12″ and 4×12″. “.

A small 1×12″ cabinet is characterized by a noticeable response at low volumes, its advantage lies in the behavior of the sound that does not go beyond the front panel. According to experts, the bass sounds more natural in a 2×12″ guitar cabinet than in 1×12″ and the volume is comparable with the capabilities of a large cabinet 4×12″. In turn, 4×12″ is able to give more bass, but the clarity of the sound will become noticeable at a distance of 8 m. Some guitarists claim that instead of one 4×12″ it is more advisable to use a pair of 2×12″ cabinets, placing them vertically. If you need a cabinet that had If the characteristics of the transitional version from 1×12″ to 2×12″, then the manufacturers have already taken care of this by setting up the production of 1×12″ cabinets with increased dimensions.

A guitar stack often includes one to two 4×12″ cabinets (performers resort to using a second cabinet when participating in more serious performances). A cabinet of four 12″ speakers may not have a classic straight, but, as an option , sloping cabinet – in this case, the direction of the upper speakers is set forward and slightly upward, and the installation of the device itself is carried out on top of the stack (for a larger sound opening angle).0003

closed cabinets have a rear wall that completely covers the cabinet itself and the rear of the speaker. The sound of a closed cabinet is forward focused, the guitarist gets more bass and generally hears himself better when playing with a band, but for this he needs to be in close proximity to the device. Closed cabinets are most often used when recording with a single microphone.

When it comes to open cabinet , there is no back wall at all. Thus, sound can be picked up by a microphone both from the front and from the rear side of the cabinet. Please note that when using an open cabinet, the sound may behave differently: add volume due to reflection from the back, depending on the characteristics of the room, or begin to “blur” when playing along with the band.

If you want to combine the characteristics of both open and closed cabinets, get semi-open cabinet , which has half or three-quarters of the back wall missing.

Bass reflex (front) will provide an extension of the low-frequency range even at low volume. For reference, they are equipped with approximately 90% of the speaker systems produced in the world. If you lack bass and volume (especially during live performance), then a bass-reflex cabinet will greatly improve the situation.

Or do you prefer a combo?

A combo amp (also called a “combo” or “combo” in professional slang) is a cabinet and a guitar amplifier united by a common cabinet. Disputes on the topic of what is better, a combo or separately “head” and cabinet, have been going on in the musical environment for a long time. Let’s face it, it’s just a matter of individual preference, but those who vote for the “head” and the cabinet are still more convincing in this old dispute. This option will be more expensive for your budget, but its choice will pay off with the following amenities:

  1. A head and cabinet from the same manufacturer will sound better than a combo from the same manufacturer. After all, the design of the cabinet is very simple, and therefore the sound encounters much less interference than in a combo amplifier.
  2.                                                                                               If you experiment and change the number of speakers you have, replacing the cabinet (the “head” remains) will cost you less than buying a new amp.
  3. The combo amplifier is clearly inferior in flexibility, because the “head”, firstly, is more mobile in terms of carrying, and, secondly, you always have the opportunity to connect it to another cabinet.
  4. The cabinet and the “head” can be moved to different corners of the room if necessary. With a combo, of course, you can’t do that.
  5. Any amp is compatible with the guitar cabinet. But when connecting an external amplifier to a combo, you never really know what technical problems you will have to face.

And yet the question of price sometimes becomes decisive in the choice of many users. The combo amplifier is cheaper and you don’t need to fill your head with any extra connections. Therefore, despite a number of advantages of the “head” and cabinet, the combo does not lose its popularity.

Differences between bass and guitar cabinets:

  1. More power;
  2. Not only 10-, 12-, but even 15-inch speakers are used, providing great volume sound;
  3. Increased number of speakers. For example, a cabinet of eight 10-inch (8×10”) speakers is just awesome for rock;
  4. The

  5. Horn Speaker (tweeter) is an optional 1″ to 3″ tweeter that allows the bass cabinet to be used over a wide frequency range.
