What is the difference between a professional security system and a cheap alarm system

When you decide to secure your apartment, house or office, you will be faced with a choice: use a professional security system or trust a more affordable non-certified alarm system. If you do not dive into the nuances, it seems that the differences are insignificant and any security equipment will successfully cope with the task.

But the desire to save money turns into many problems. Sensors sin with false positives or do not respond to real threats, they may suddenly stop working, and the system will not warn you about a problem. The radio range is barely enough to cover the premises, and the connection is constantly interrupted. The mobile app doesn’t work well. Your object (and this is property and even people’s lives) is completely unprotected from attack by intruders. In addition, security companies refuse to accept alarms on the remote control, and it is your responsibility to respond to alarms.

To help you make the right choice, we have formulated 6 essential requirements for a reliable security system. And at the same time they told how Ajax corresponds to them.

1. The security system uses several channels to communicate with the world

To transmit alarms to the user and the security company, the security system can use various communication channels: GSM, Ethernet, Wi-Fi.

Alarms with a single communication channel are unreliable, as it can stop working even for natural reasons – and the system will not notify the user and the security company about the alarm. For example, if the money on the SIM card account runs out or due to a failure on the provider’s side. Also, such alarms are easier to sabotage: just jam the GSM frequencies (if only a SIM card is used) or cut the Ethernet cable (if wired Internet is used).

If the security system has several communication channels, one is used as the main one, and the rest act as backup. Such systems are more reliable, since the simultaneous failure of several channels is less likely, and in the event of a natural failure, the system will continue to operate normally. The more communication channels, the higher the chance to inform the user and the security organization about the threat in time.

The channels must be of different types. If several GSM modules are installed in the control panel and there are no other communication channels, consider that you have only one channel. When jamming GSM frequencies, the system will be cut off from the outside world.

2. The security system has a cloud server

As a rule, a cloud server is a link between the control panel and the application that manages the security system. It allows you to control all aspects of the operation of the equipment being even a thousand kilometers from the object – via the Internet. In addition, the server provides the transmission of informative push notifications about service events and alarms.

In professional systems, cloud servers also monitor communication with security equipment and its performance by polling control panels. The higher the polling frequency, the faster the server will detect a problem and alert users and the security company.

3. Security system devices use reliable technology for communicating with the control panel

In wireless security systems, information is exchanged between the control panel and sensors via a radio channel. Communication must be extremely reliable – even short-term interruptions are undesirable (they lead to an increase in the alarm transmission time), loss of communication is completely unacceptable (the control panel, and then users and the security company will not know about the alarm).

As a rule, professional systems operate at 433 MHz or 868 MHz, and use a range of frequencies for communication between the control panel and sensors, and not one fixed frequency. This allows the system to automatically change the operating frequency in the event of interference, either accidental or intentional. The technology is called frequency hopping.

4. The security system has two-way communication with devices

Communication between security system devices can be one-way and two-way. In the first case, the sensors transmit alarms and service events to the control panel, but it does not communicate with the sensors in any way. If the device stops working (due to sabotage or equipment failure) or the connection is interrupted, the control panel will not know about it. And will not warn the user and the security company about the security breach.

In security systems with two-way communication, the control panel and sensors exchange information. The sensor transmits an alarm until it receives confirmation of its acceptance by the control panel – there is no risk of losing the alarm in case of a short-term loss of communication. The control panel can change device settings, interrogate them, checking the connection and status. The degree of reliability of such a system is many times higher.

Sensors send status reports to the hub every 12 seconds or more. The hub responds to the sensors that it has received the reports and updates the status of the devices in the app. If the device fails to communicate for some reason, the hub considers that the device is lost and informs the users and the security company about it.

When sending an alarm, the sensor requires confirmation from the hub. If the sensor does not receive a response, it sends an alarm until it is accepted and processed by the hub.

5. The security system has encrypted data and is protected from forgery

Security organizations take only certified security systems to the remote control. During the certification process, security equipment is studied by independent laboratories accredited to conduct certain tests: functional, equipment resistance to climatic, mechanical and external electromagnetic fields, radio communication quality, the possibility of influencing the operation of the device from the outside. A reliable way to ensure the safety of your home is to install a security system. And if in an apartment only one of its types is mainly used – penetration protection, then in a private house the security system can include various subsystems: monitoring the approaches and entrances to the building, perimeter protection, protection of the interior.

So, there are four main types of security systems:

  • SOTS — security and alarm system. When entering the premises, alarm sensors are triggered, and a signal is sent to the security service console. This is the most common type of protection for apartments and offices in multi-storey buildings.
  • ACS — access control and management system. With its help, you can control locks, external gate drives, control access to rooms where the entry of strangers is undesirable.
  • SOVN is a security video surveillance system using special cameras.
  • SITU – engineering and technical reinforcement system. It includes, among other things, the height of the fence, the strength of windows and gates, the reliability of door locks, the presence of a bunker or secret fortified rooms – everything that can complicate intruders’ access to the premises.

“Smart Home” is a technology for controlling all security systems using a single device.

Let’s talk about each type in more detail.

Security and alarm system

With the help of the security and alarm system, you can monitor any object around the clock – an apartment, a cottage, an office, a warehouse, etc. SOTS is a reliable way to protect the protected object from penetration.

COTS is divided into two types:

  • Passive alarm system. In case of unauthorized intrusion into the protected area, a light and sound alarm signal is given. At the same time, neither the security console nor the owner receives an alarm signal. The system is designed only for the psychological impact on criminals, which may not always be effective.
  • Active COTS. The protected object in this case is equipped with sensors that send an alarm signal to the control panel, and from there to the console of a specialized security organization. Such a remote control is capable of receiving signals from several objects at once. After receiving the signal, the security structure arrives at the place of the alleged penetration as soon as possible. The remote security system also has a so-called panic button, when pressed, a signal is also sent to the control panel. Such buttons are installed in banks, stores to protect against robbery.

Typical COTS consists of several elements:

  • central receiving and control device that receives signals from sensors;
  • sensors or detectors;
  • warning devices – radio and GSM transmitters, sound and light devices;
  • control panel;
  • device for monitoring the condition of detectors and cable lines in the COTS;
  • power supply – units and converters that ensure uninterrupted operation of the COTS even when disconnected from the main power supply system.

Sensors are one of the main elements of COTS. They are responsible for the prompt response of the system to an intrusion, so we will talk about them in more detail.

Infrared motion sensors respond to any movements within the monitored object. Some models are able to send a signal to turn on security cameras. The sensor consists of a special infrared transmitter and receiver, which reacts to the disappearance of the signal in the event that a certain optical axis is blocked by an intruder. By the way, if there is a pet in the house, then it is recommended to install a special sensor, otherwise the guards will come every time the pet enters its field of action.

Capacitive sensor creates a field with a certain capacitance in the protected object. When any object enters the field, the capacitance of the field changes, triggering an alarm.

The wire wave sensors operate similarly to , generating an electromagnetic field between two zones. Devices are triggered when crossing this field. radio beam, radio wave and PIR sensors also respond to movement .

Vibration sensors send a signal to the control panel when vibration occurs: for example, when trying to break through a wall or open a safe, when a window is broken. The acoustic sensor reacts to the sound of breaking glass, just like any other loud sound. Magnetic contact sensors are triggered when you try to open windows or doors.

Access control and management system

Modern automated access control systems are designed to protect against unauthorized access to premises or certain areas and to identify persons who have access rights. The most well-known device of this type to the layman is an intercom, which restricts the right of access to the entrance of an apartment building to those who do not have an electronic key such as Touch Memory.

ACS consists of several main elements: controller, reader, identifier and actuator. The controller stores all information about the configuration, system operation mode, access rights, etc. The reader receives the information recorded on the identifier and transfers it to the controller for processing. An identifier can be an electronic key, an access card, and recently biometric ACS terminals have appeared that identify a person by fingerprints or the iris of the eye.

After identification, a command is sent from the controller to the executive device – to allow access or not. Executive devices are locks, turnstiles, gate drives, barriers, that is, everything that is a physical obstacle to unauthorized access.

In addition to up-to-date information, the SOV makes it possible to analyze events that have already occurred, since all information from the cameras is usually recorded and can be viewed at any time.

Today there are several types of video surveillance – home, outdoor, covert. According to the method of signal processing, systems are divided into analog, combined and digital. The latter are the most advanced and in demand, since they provide high image quality, high speed access to the archive, the possibility of remote viewing and integration with other security systems.

According to the video signal transmission method, IDS can be wired or wireless. Wireless systems can be installed in the most inaccessible places, but wired systems are more reliable and cheaper.

PTS cameras are also classified according to a variety of technical specifications. The two largest categories are digital and analog cameras. Digital or IP cameras use a digital signal in their work, they are easy to integrate into the network, so digital video surveillance can be easily scaled up if necessary. The resolution in digital cameras is much higher than in analog ones, but sometimes high resolution is simply not necessary, especially since it requires capacious data storage systems.

Engineering and technical fortification system

Engineering and technical fortification system (SITU) of any building is protection against unauthorized entry by strengthening its structural elements. Ideally, each SITU should have 5 protected zones:

  • territory perimeter;
  • building perimeter;
  • premises available to visitors;
  • premises accessible only to the owners of the house;
  • rooms with the most limited access – weapons, safes.

Smart security system within the concept of “Smart Home”

Just in the middle of the last century, science fiction writers in their books described wonderful houses in which all systems – from turning on the light to security – were controlled by a person at a distance. The Smart Home security system is the future that has become the present. It allows you to monitor the state of the house from almost anywhere – you only need any device with Internet access: a tablet, smartphone or laptop. Monitoring within the system is carried out around the clock, and the signal is sent to the owner and to the security console immediately, as soon as any emergency situation occurs. By the way, you can also check whether the burglar alarm is on remotely. If necessary, it is very easy to turn it on remotely.

In addition to the security function, the smart home system, using special sensors, monitors the state of the fire, gas and water systems, detects emergency situations and notifies the owner, and also, depending on the programmed capabilities of the security system as a whole, sends a signal to de-energize the room or turn off the gas.

You can monitor the situation in the house from your phone or tablet online using security cameras. Recordings from them are immediately duplicated in the “cloud”, so it is simply impossible to fake or delete them.
