Used phone market in China: NSYS Group overview to read

The usual chain of trade in the Chinese used mobile phone market consists of intermediaries: the customer, the recycling center / retail store, the recycling company / wholesaler.

However, due to the transition to online trading, the number of intermediaries has increased dramatically. This led to fierce competition and which contributed to a more dynamic development of the market. There are several aspects that are driving the development of the mobile communication niche in China, especially in Guangdong, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Used Phone Market Growth Drivers

As the economy gradually slows down due to the pandemic, China is entering a new phase of heavy adoption of used phones. As overall revenue declines, this directly impacts purchasing power and demand for new phones.

With the advent of 5G technology, China’s top phone manufacturers, including Oppo, Huawei and others, have announced new models coming soon. So consumers face another challenge: how to keep up with trends, buy a brand new 5G phone and not go broke. As a result, consumers are starting to flood the market with used 4G phones, trading them in for trade-in.

In recent years, China has built the world’s largest broadband user base, with most users accessing the Internet using mobile devices. This includes both video streaming and online gaming.

CNNIC statistics show that the number of active Internet users in China has exceeded 847 million. Even according to the most conservative estimates, the Chinese mobile games market brought in 230.8 billion yuan in 2019, and the market continues to grow.

The growth of the mobile industry in China has become one of the main driving forces behind the development of the mobile gaming industry, and vice versa. As the requirements for mobile gaming hardware increase, people are more inclined to buy a used but cheap phone that is purely for mobile gaming.

These phones could be easily recycled after they were worn out, all of this and more also contributed to the growth of the used mobile phone market.

What are the features of trade with China in 2021?

Despite the growth of online sales of used phones in the Chinese market, offline transactions played a prominent role in the market until the last few years. And even though they were not transparent in terms of pricing and quality control.

Selling used phones online offers a number of benefits, such as:

• a wider range of products for customers.
• better prices for suppliers by reducing costs (no need to hire staff and rent a place, everything is done remotely).
• extended warranty period for refurbished/used phones.

According to data provided by 36Kr (36Kr is a Chinese publishing company specializing in “new economy”) and Zhuanzhuan (one of the largest online trading platforms for used and refurbished phones in China) in 20192008, C2C trade is the largest part of the deals in the Chinese used phone market.

Chinese marketplaces

The report also highlights two main offline platforms in China: Zhongguancun electronics market and Huaqiangbei electronics market, the so-called “China Silicon Valley”. It has been the largest and most famous offline electronic product markets in China for more than 30 years.

However, since the mid-2000s, when the online trading of electronic goods in China began with Taobao, and the other largest online competitor Jingdong received its first major investment. These marketplaces have suffered from an inability to adapt to changing circumstances and their business models have changed and become very outdated since then.

Articles say they are lagging behind and hindering the transition to more sustainable development. Crates of counterfeit electronics have earned them a bad reputation so that customer confidence has been completely lost.

As a result, according to the latest news, Zhongguancun and Huaqiangbei were closed in October and November 2020. On the other hand, online trading platforms have been relentlessly gaining popularity since their launch in the mid-2000s.

China’s largest online platforms

Now let’s take a closer look at the largest online platforms in China.

1. Zhuanzhuan (co-created by Chinese media giants 58tongcheng and Tencent) is a C2B2C trading platform that provides unparalleled quality assurance, improves transaction efficiency, and builds trust between buyers and sellers.

Zhuanzhuan is a leading example of the C2B2C model. Due to the impact of COVID-2019, the platform has been affected by a supply slump. Since then, the company has decided to cut costs and put forward measures to support small and medium-sized businesses.

2. Zhaoliangji receives goods directly from manufacturers and suppliers, then sells these goods and provides delivery services to its customers.

3. Aihuishou (invested by Huawei) is an online device recycling platform. It provides delivery services (to the point of issue and door-to-door), cooperates directly with manufacturers, and has also developed a closed-loop buying and processing service at its stations. In addition, autonomous processing stations were created.

For Aihuishou’s C2B segment, the main problem comes from within, due to the costs of 600 stores and processing stations. During the pandemic, China imposed severe restrictions on the movement of the population, so the stores were hit hard.

As a result, since Aihuishou’s business is heavily dependent on shops, he has taken steps to reduce wages and reduce staff.

4.Huishoubao is an online recycling and delivery service provider, provides mobile phone recycling and data services. Its services consist of sales of used phones, leasing, repair, exchange and others.

All of the aforementioned online platforms rely heavily on product quality checks because the relationship of trust between suppliers and customers is built on impartial and thorough quality control.

This is especially true in online trading, where the buyer must decide whether he is willing to buy the phone at the supplier’s price and make the decision based on the information at his disposal. If the data does not correctly reflect the current state of the phone, the customer will have to question not only the reliability of such a deal, but also the platform.
