Ryobi Stick Vac Review – Tools In Action
Last week we reviewed the Ryobi Wet Dry Vac and gave it high praise. Now we have a new Ryobi vacuum to talk about, the Ryobi Stick Vac. As you probably know, I am a huge fan of Ryobi. I love the large 18V ONE+ cordless platform. I love how they give you professional features for a homeowners tool but don’t overcharge you. I love how I can buy bare tools right at my local Home Depot. But what I really love is their wide spectrum of practical tools for the homeowner. So let’s jump into the Ryobi Stick Vac Review.
Ryobi Stick Vac Review Overview
Let’s face it, there are other stick vacs on the market with well-known names such as Black & Decker. Black & Decker is known for their Dustbuster and ever since they released the Dustbuster, they have been creating handheld vacs, including stick vacs. While I love the Black & Decker stick vacs, they always seem to lack a ton of power and a ton of runtime. Again, they are great for quick pick ups and quick cleaning. For me, it would be nice to have a little more.
This is where the Ryobi comes into play. Do I think it will replace your full-size plugin vacuum? No, it won’t replace that vacuum. However, the Ryobi has a ton of power and will allow you to take out that big upright fewer times, which is a win.
The Ryobi is not going to replace your upright, but it’s much stronger and longer running than the popular Black & Decker stick vacs.
Ryobi Stick Vac Review Features
The Ryobi Stick Vac comes with a crevice tool, a wall mount, the wall mount charger and a 18V battery. I wish Ryobi included a soft brush attachment with the kit.
The vacuum is designed with a brushless motor which means longer run times and a longer life.
The stick vac runs off the Ryobi 18V ONE+ battery platform which has over 100 tools in the lineup. Ryobi includes a 4Ah battery. The best part about this battery is that if the vacuum runs out of juice, you can grab another battery and keep on working. You don’t have to sit around and wait for it to charge. I love the removable battery.
The power button is a push button that has 3 cycles. Push it once and the vacuum will turn on high mode. Push it again and the vacuum will drop down to low mode. One more push and the vacuum will turn off.
Once you turn on the vacuum, the brush will automatically start spinning. There isn’t a separate switch for turning off the brush. At first, that worried me since we have hardwood floors. Usually, you have to turn the brushes off for hardwood floor otherwise it will just spit all the debris in different areas of the floor.
I found with the Ryobi, if I put it in low mode, it does a great job on the wood and hard surfaces.
The stick vac lays down flat so you can get under the couch, bed and other low areas.
The vacuum runs on two plastic wheels. The wheels are not extremely hard or soft. It’s a weird type of rubber. The wheels spin extremely nice, so I am sure they have some nice bearings in the wheels.
1 of 2
Besides the vacuum laying down flat, the head also rotates left and right which makes it easy to turn and get around items.
The handle has a nice feel. The location of the power button is located in an area that is very easy to access with your thumb. So no need to use two hands.
The battery is located on the back of the tool. While it’s not the lightest stick vacuum I have ever used, it’s really not bad. With the battery on the back, it has a nice balance so you’re not fighting the vacuum while using it.
1 of 2
The floor attachment and the stick are both easy to remove. Just depress a button and you can disassemble.
All the dirt is sucked up into a canister that is located on the main unit.
With a quick push of a button, you can empty the canister into your trash.
If you want to take the canister off to clean the filter, just depress a button and the canister slides off.
The filter is reusable and easy to access and clean.
Ryobi Stick Vac Review Performance
While I am still under the assumption that this can’t replace your corded upright vac, this is pretty close. I have two rugs downstairs. One rug is 4′ x 6′ and the other is 8’x12′. I took my Shark upright vacuum, which I love and rave about. I vacuumed both rugs with the Shark. Then I took the Ryobi and did the same rugs. Amazing, even after I vacuumed with the Shark, the Ryobi still found dirt to suck up. I wish I would have taken a picture but this one you have to trust me on.
Again, I am not saying this blows away a Shark or upright, I am just saying that for a small, cordless upright, this has awesome power.
The one thing I did notice about the Ryobi was on the smaller rug, I had to put it on low. When the vac was on high, it kept trying to pull up the rug and was a pain to vacuum. When it comes down to it, it’s just a powerful vacuum.
Ryobi Stick Vac Review Value
The Home Depot retails this for about $200 and that is with a battery. For $200 I think it’s a good value. Yes, I know you can buy uprights for less money, but you still have to worry about the cord.
I also know that Dyson has a cordless version for about $200. Yes, that is a nice vacuum but you get about 20 minutes of run time compared to 45 with the Ryobi. Also if you run out of power with the Dyson, you have to sit around and wait for it to recharge. With the Ryobi, just insert another battery and you’re set to go.
This is just one of the vacuums you have to try and see for yourself. This isn’t one of those cheap vacuums that offer a little suction. This vacuum is powerful and gives you freedom, which is why I am not balking at the price tag.
Ryobi Stick Vac Review Final Thoughts
Bottomline, I love this vacuum. The vacuum is powerful and has great run time. However, I do see one problem with the vacuum. Both my wife and I love this vacuum but I already told my mom she could have it since she has a small place and she is getting older and the weight of the uprights is harder for her. So here is the problem, I now have to go buy another Ryobi Stick Vac for our house.
If you are looking for a quality and powerful upright, the Ryobi is the one to own. I love how I can change the battery if need be. I don’t have to wait around for it to charge. The unit is great for carpet, rugs and hardwood floors, even ceramic.

The Only Ryobi One+ Device I REALLY Regret Buying
This vacuum cleaner is TERRIBLY NOISY, with a very unpleasant high-pitch turbine sound. I measured it at around 90 dB, which means you should be wearing ear protection when using this appliance.
This is in stark contrast to its suction power which is insufficient for most standard domestic tasks,.
It’s easy to clean/empty, and the standard external Ryobi battery theoretically allows extended use if you own more than one battery, but due to the above two factors this vacuum cleaner is next to useless, and so it is collecting dust – on its outside – in my broom cabinet.
No, I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT recommend this product!

Appalling terrible waste of money
Just not up to the job. The only good thing about it was the light that lit up the floor just in front of the vacuum head. Heavy to manoeuvre, gets clogged up too quickly. Have to dismantle and clear at least every 5 min.

terrible suction, terrible brush.
We bought this vacuum less than a year ago and it just can’t handle anything. I can count on only 2 hands how many times it has actually been used. It is useless. I hate using it. Suction is hopeless as it struggles to bring up small particles and even when it does pick them up it doesn’t go into the cannister properly so when you turn the vacuum off they all fall back out of the head onto the floor. I have changed the filter multiple times to ensure this wasn’t the issue. The brush in the head can’t even handle the smallest amount of hair. Constantly tangling within 5 mins. I have finally found the receipt after months of looking (moved and couldn’t find reciepts) and will be returning for a refund or exchange.

Good stick vac for the price
Used on hard floor, tiles and a rug including carpeted stairs. Works well on less star as it is a bit heavier than the Dyson. Light is a raking light so you see all the bits on the floor that need to be vacuumed.

Do not buy
I bought this because I was after a stick vacuum and it was much cheaper than the Dyson. It came with a battery and charger which I could use in an older one+ Ryobi hammer drill I have been happy with.
It is a very poor stick vacuum with not much suction power. The entrance to the dust chamber is very small and has a rubber flap that easily gets clogged. See attached photo.
1/3 the price of a Dyson and about 1/5 as worthwhile. Actually I just found the receipt and it was not cheap at $399.
I rarely use it now but the charger and battery are still good for my drill.
I would not buy this item again or recommend it.
In my opinion it sucks but not in the way you want it to.

Awful
The vacuum is so loud! It’s so high pitch is deafening. The head part it’s too light and lifts off the floor, I have to go over a section about 6 times to actually pick up the stuff off the floor. My old vac which was so cheap did a better job, regret this purchase 100%

Great stick vac
I bought this in isolation as our trusty Hoover broke after 10 years so needed something to clean as I was fed up with sweeping.
We have 3 in the house including a 3.5yr old, a dog & cat. And wow I was more impressed than I thought I would be.
Picked all the dirt up including bits like cereal crumbs, rice and chip crumbs on both hardwood and carpet. The power head worked well (not amazing as we had a power head on our Hoover – but it’s a stick vac) on the carpets and rugs with seamless transition between hardwood and carpet.
It’s noisy yes, b
… Read moreut it’s a Ryobi and I didn’t expect anything less and it would be no louder than my vacuum cleaner anyway. We got the bigger battery by buying another tool (as it was cheaper than the battery alone) and I can clean the whole house on high speed with still 1 bar left which would be around 45mins. It’s a bit top heavy with the bigger battery and makes the power head seem light weight and lift at times but that is also getting used to the manoeuvrability of the head itself as it’s only a stick vacuum and not a vacuum itself.
Overall very please for the price and the job it does. I use it second daily and it’s handy as a handheld for the furniture with the two head attachments.

Quite Good
Used on carpet and vinyl planks suction is quite good. The suction goes straight into the canister without having to go around corners or spin so it is not easily clogged. It picks up dog hair realy well without getting clogged. While the dust canister is quite small it is very easy to empty. With slow speed the power head does not seem to spin which is pretty useless but at high speed it is quite effective. It appears to be quite robust but a little heavy. Being able to replace the battery readily from a variety od sources is an outstanding feature.

Decent small Vac, multiple purposes
Decently built vac, good to be able to use it for car, house etc.
Suction is ok for a small vac, decent enough to do floors on our 4WD.
Could be a little sturdier build quality.
Batteries only last 15-25mins, chews through the power! 4 or 5ah

Good on carpet, poor on hard floor, noisy
Have owned this now for over a year. It seems reliable. Good battery life. Good on carpet but poor on hard floor. Heavy and way too noisy. Very disappointed that the filter is not washable and is meant to be replaced but basically needs washing after every use.
It still has a use in our house but I would buy a different brand if I were buying again.

Hopeless Suction, noisy
Very disappointing as it only has two options option one is high speed with the roller spinning or option to low speed no roller spin, running high speed with the roller spinning choose the battery real quick and I was running a 5 amp battery.
Suction is hopeless as it struggles to bring up particles like 1-2mm particles and even when it does pick them up it doesn’t go into the catcher properly so when you turn the vacuum off they all fall back out of the head onto the floor.
Total waste of time and money I brought my back to Bunnings for a refund the very next day.
It is a little noisy which I wouldn’t care too much about if the suction works well but to have that much noise and bad suction is a bad outcome.

Just doesn’t suck
[update: 6 months in, and this thing has gone from bad to worse… Ryobi, what the heck were you thinking?]
I was really hoping this stick vac would be at least “ok” for use in an apartment with a mix of hard tiles and laminated flooring, carpets and a shag rug. Alas, no; it just doesn’t pick up dust and small particles well at all on the hard surfaces, fares better on the carpet but fails miserably on the shag rug. It’s certainly not for want of trying – this thing makes a racket like it’s about to take off, and the spinning “power head” look
… Read mores like it should grab anything you pass it over. But the reality is it doesn’t work well at all on hard flooring, leaving dust behind even after multiple passes. On the shag rug the power head usually jams up unless you pull it backwards only at juuust the right angle to avoid it grabbing the pile. Its only small success is on short-pile carpet where it does a passable job.
I found the design to be fine – the accessories all seemed fit for purpose, the dust canister easy to remove, empty and clean, the head fairly easy to manoeuvre and it’s not too heavy considering what needs to be in the body. All for nought, as it just doesn’t suck.

Disappointed.
October 2020 we purchased the R18SV8 to use in our caravan, and also for my husband to use in the garage.
We were extremely disappointed in its ability to vacuum fine dust and small particles in our van and to vacuum the car, when used as a small hand held vacuum. Suction was very poor. We always cleaned the filters after use. We were in van full time for 6 months.
On the plus side it does work ok as a carpet sweeper.
Purchase price from Bunnings was $399.

I have the P726 stick vac 1 year, used maybe 10 times and the roller head locked up and I smelled burning rubber. No way to replace anything! Can’t find a head to replace it. Sad, cause I use a lot of Ryobi products and have most of them, but this really disappointed me as I can’t fix or replace the head. Does anyone know if there is newer head that will replace this?

I bought this handheld vacuum because I thought it would be nice to collect a case spills here and there. What I found is that the suction power is negligible right out of the box, but worse, the filter clogs so quickly that I have to empty the bin (no big deal) and clean the filter (painfully) 2 or 3 times a day. . Job. Picking up dog hair here and there is fine, but anything that really needs to be vacuumed (like real dirt)…

Suction performance is normal. I mean it does its job, but you have to go through what you suck three times. Battery life is excellent. I don’t like the cleaning cage. It is not so easy to just throw out the garbage and cover the vacuum cleaner with a lid. However, since I use Ryobi tools, I like that the battery can be used for other tools.
