The spectrum of electromagnetic fields extends to frequencies above 10 24 Hz.
This very wide complex range is divided into sub-ranges with different physical properties.

The division of frequencies into subbands was previously performed according to historical criteria and is now obsolete.
This gave rise to the modern classification of frequency bands, which is currently used internationally.
However, in the literature one can still find the traditionally established names of frequency ranges.

Figure 1 shows the frequency range occupied by electromagnetic waves and shows its division into subbands.

The upper part of the figure shows the division of the spectrum of electromagnetic waves,
established historically and officially accepted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineer, IEEE).
The lower part of the figure shows the current classification of frequency bands adopted for use in NATO structures.
It can be seen that the boundaries of the frequency ranges in these two classifications do not always coincide.

Frequency bands and subbands are referred to in capital letters.
This approach arose at the dawn of radar,
when the exact value of the operating frequency of the radar was tried to be kept secret.

Some radars and their frequency bands

Radar systems operate over a wide range of radiated frequencies.
The higher the operating frequency of the radar, the more the propagation of electromagnetic waves is affected by atmospheric phenomena such as rain or clouds.
But at the same time, at higher frequencies, better accuracy of the radar is achieved.
Figure 2 shows the frequency ranges of electromagnetic waves used by radar facilities.

A- and B-bands (HF and VHF)

In the Russian literature, these ranges are called the high frequency range (HF) and
very high frequency range (VHF, sometimes – meter range),
in English – the HF (High Frequency) range and the VHF (Very High Frequency) range.

These radar bands below 300 MHz have a long history of use,
since it was in these ranges that radio technologies were actively developed during the Second World War.
Currently, these frequencies are used in early warning radars and so-called over-the-horizon radars.
(Over The Horizon, O.T.H.).
For such low frequencies it is easier to build high power transmitters.
The attenuation of electromagnetic waves at such frequencies is less than when using higher frequencies.
On the other hand, the accuracy of such radars is limited,
since low frequencies require antennas with very large physical dimensions,
which determines the measurement accuracy and resolution in angular coordinates.
In addition, these frequency bands are also used by other services, communications and broadcasting,
therefore, the bandwidth for radars is limited (which, again, affects accuracy and resolution).

Recently, however, interest in using these frequency bands in radar is returning,
because at these frequencies, Stealth radar signature reduction technologies do not provide the desired effect.

C-band (UHF)

This band is called the ultra high frequency (UHF) band or decimeter band.
In English literature – Ultra High Frequency (UHF).

There are not many radar systems designed for this frequency range (300 MHz to 1 GHz).
These frequencies are well suited for radar detection and tracking of satellites and ballistic missiles over long distances.
Radars operating in this frequency range are used for early detection and warning of targets such as,
for example, surveillance radar in a medium-range air defense system
MEADS
(Medium Extended Air Defense System).
Some weather radar systems, such as those for wind profiling,
operate in this range, since the propagation of electromagnetic waves at such frequencies is weakly dependent on clouds and rain.

New technologies
ultra-wideband radar
(Ultrawideband, UWB) use all frequencies from A- to C-band.
Ultra-wideband radars emit very short pulses at all frequencies simultaneously.
They are used for non-destructive testing of materials and objects,
as well as how
subsurface sounding radars
(Ground Penetrating Radar, GPR), for example, for archaeological research.

D-band (L-band)

This frequency range (1 to 2 GHz) is the preferred frequency range for early warning radars.
with a range of up to 250 nautical miles (about 450 kilometers).
They emit high power pulses with a wide spectrum and often with
intrapulse modulation.
Due to the curvature of the earth’s surface, the maximum detection range is limited for targets at low altitudes.
Such targets, as the range increases, very quickly disappear behind the radio horizon.

In this frequency range, early warning radars in the air traffic control system operate,
such as Air Route Surveillance Radar (ARSR).
When combined with a monopulse secondary surveillance radar (Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar, MSSR)
they use a relatively large, slowly rotating antenna.

If the letter L is meant as the first letter in the word L arge (big),
then the designation L-band is a good mnemonic rhyme for a large antenna size or long range.

E/F-band (S-band)

In this band, the atmospheric attenuation is higher than in the D-band.
Radars operating in this range require significantly more radiated power in order to
to achieve good maximum range values.
An example is
MPR medium power radar
(Medium Power Radar) with a pulse power of 20 MW.
In this frequency range, the influence of weather conditions is stronger than in the D-band.
Therefore, several weather radars operate in the E / F band, but mainly in tropical and subtropical climatic zones,
because here they can “see” beyond the limits of a strong storm.

Special airfield surveillance radars (Airport Surveillance Radar, ASR)
used at airports to detect and display the position of aircraft in the airspace of airports,
on average, at ranges of 50 … 60 nautical miles (about 100 km).
Aerodrome radars determine the position of aircraft and weather conditions in areas of both civil and military airfields.

S-band designation (Small, Short – small, short),
as opposed to the L-band designation, can be interpreted as a designation for smaller antennas or shorter range.

G-band (C-band)

Many military mobile radars operate in the G-band (4 to 8 GHz)
(overview of the battlefield, weapons control and ground reconnaissance) with a short and medium range.
Antenna sizes provide excellent measurement accuracy and resolution while
being relatively small, they do not interfere with rapid movement.
The influence of bad weather conditions is very significant.
Therefore, in radars of this range, designed to work on air targets,
Antennas with circular polarization are often used.
This frequency range is reserved for most types of weather radars,
used to detect precipitation in temperate climates such as Europe.

I/J-band (X- and Ku-bands)

In this frequency range (8 to 12 GHz), the ratio between the wavelength used and
antenna size is much better than in the lower frequency bands.
I/J-band is relatively common in military applications such as airborne radar,
providing the functions of intercepting an air target and firing at it, as well as attacking ground targets.
The very small size of the antenna determines good applicability.
Missile guidance systems in the I / J-band are of acceptable size for complexes for which mobility and low weight are important,
and long range is not a major requirement.

This frequency range is widely used in maritime navigational radars for both civil and military applications.
Small and inexpensive high-rotation antennas provide significant maximum ranges and good accuracy.
These radars use slotted waveguide and small strip antennas, usually placed under radomes.

In addition to the above, this frequency range is common in space and airborne imaging radars,
based on
antennas with synthetic apertures
(Synthetic Aperture Radar),
intended both for the purposes of military electronic intelligence, and for civilian geographic mapping.

Specialized
inverse synthetic aperture radars
(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar, ISAR)
used in marine air pollution control.

K-band (K-band and Ka-band)

The higher the frequency, the stronger
atmospheric absorption
and attenuation of electromagnetic waves.
On the other hand, the potential accuracy and resolution also increase.
Radar systems operating in this range provide a short range,
but very high resolution and high data update rate.
In air traffic control systems, such systems are used as
ground control radars
(Surface Movement Radar, SMR)
or (as part of) airport surface detection equipment
(Airport Surface Detection Equipment, ASDE).
The use of short probing pulses with a duration of several nanoseconds provides range resolution,
at which the contour of an aircraft or a ground vehicle can be recognized on the radar screen.

V-band

Due to the phenomenon of scattering by molecules (influence of air humidity), the attenuation of electromagnetic waves in this range is very high.
Radar applications here are limited to a range of a few meters.

W-band

Two phenomena are observed in this range: the maximum attenuation near 75 GHz and a relative minimum at a frequency of about 96 GHz.
Both of these effects are used in practice.
In the automotive industry, small built-in radar devices operate at frequencies of 75 … 76 GHz in parking aids,
to view blind spots and brake assistants.
High attenuation (the influence of oxygen molecules O 2 ) reduces interference from such radars.

Radar sets operating between 96 GHz and 98 GHz are used as laboratory equipment.
They provide insight into the application of radar at extremely high frequencies such as 100 GHz.


In the Merill Skolniks Radar Handbook (3rd edition), the author refers to an earlier standard letter designation
IEEE for RF Bands (IEEE-Std. 521-2002).
These letter designations (as shown on the red scale in Figure 1) were originally chosen to describe the
radar ranges as early as World War II.
But at present, the frequencies used exceed 110 GHz – today there are generators with phase control up to 270 GHz,
powerful transmitters up to 350 GHz. Sooner or later, these frequencies will also be used in the interests of radar.
At the same time, the use of ultra-wideband radars goes beyond the boundaries of traditional radar frequency bands.

The different radar band designations are very confusing. This is not difficult for an engineer or radar technician.
These specialists can work with different bands, frequencies and wavelengths. But they generally do not deal with procurement logistics,
for example, maintenance and measurement tools, or even a whole new radar. Unfortunately, logistics management,
mainly studied business sciences. Therefore, they will have problems with confusing range notation.
Now the problem is to assert that the frequency generator for I and J band serves the radar
X-band and Ku-band, and the D-band jammer interferes with the L-band radar.

Ultra-wideband radars use a very wide frequency range that goes beyond the strict boundaries of the classical ranges.
How to put it better: for example, ultra-wideband radar operates at frequencies from E to H-band,
or does it use the same frequencies from higher S-band to lower X-band?

But while manufacturers will name proposed radar facilities using the old frequency band designations,
until then, the IEEE will announce that the new frequency bands: “…are not consistent with radar practice and should not be used for
descriptions of radar frequency bands”.
