How long does a projector lamp last?

► What does the lamp life indicated on the projector data sheet mean?

A very piquant question! The fact is that projector lamps are fundamentally different from conventional lighting lamps. An ordinary light bulb works without losing brightness and then instantly burns out. The projector lamp does not burn out instantly (!), but from the very beginning gradually gradually loses brightness. This process of slow fading is endless and adds a special poignancy to the question of how long the lamp life should be indicated.

► At the dawn of projector construction, it was customary to specify a period of up to 50% loss of brightness

Of course, many have forgotten about this, but the main thing is that it was not recorded anywhere as a mandatory standard. That is why, a simple way to increase the life of lamps “on paper” is the most popular today. With this “paper” method, it is very easy to catch up with a competitor if he invented a real method to increase the life of the lamps. Are there “non-paper” ways to really increase the life of the lamps?

► What affects lamp life?

Lamp life is largely independent of lamp design and is determined by how the projector controls the lamp. Shutdown mode is extremely important. If, when the lamp is turned off, the cathode is heated so that it cools more slowly than the rest of the lamp, then it does not become contaminated and its resistance does not increase. Dirty, high-resistance cathodes require more voltage at start-up, which drastically accelerates lamp aging. Using the cathode heating mode when turning off the lamps is described only for Sharp projectors. Perhaps one of the manufacturers also uses a similar technique, but it has not been officially announced by anyone.

► Easy practical ways to determine lamp life when choosing a projector

It is very easy to determine if a projector is using the cathode heating method when the lamp is turned off. Any projector on a shutdown command will display a prompt to confirm or cancel this command. When confirmation is received, the projector will turn off the lamp immediately or slowly turn off the lamp. When the lamp is suddenly turned off, the screen immediately turns black. When the lamp turns off smoothly on a dark screen, the phrase “shutdown is in progress” is lit for 20-30 seconds (different versions of the phrase are possible, but the meaning is the same). In both cases, the fan continues to run.

► After turning off the projector, the fan continues to run for a while – does it matter to prolong the life of the lamp?

Absolutely none, but important to the projector electronics. The lamp fan is harmful, since slow cooling is preferable for glass, and the fan only speeds up this process. The fan is vital for the electronic boards of the projector, so if you turn off the projector and just unplug the power cord, the projector boards will overheat from the uncooled lamp and fail after some time. The board closest to the lamp is in its launch block, and if it fails, it usually blows up the lamp.

► Who makes the lamps and how does the lamp life depend on the brand?

Until now, the vast majority of lamps are produced by only three companies – Philips, Osram and Ushio. All lamps are of the same type and have minor differences regarding the shape of the reflector, the position of the electrodes, etc., which is done for only one purpose – so that there is no interchangeability of the lamps, since this is very beneficial with their still very high price.

► Why do the specifications give two lamp lives?

Most projectors have two modes: Optimal, which maximizes lamp life, and Boost, which increases brightness by 20% and reduces lamp life by half. In the specifications, forced mode is called standard, because. it is easier to sell a projector with a higher brightness, and the optimal one is called an economy mode. In advertising, forced brightness is usually given, and the lamp life is indicated for the optimal mode, because. it’s even easier to sell. The user, of course, does not care what to call each mode, but, for sure, it is far from indifferent how long the lamp REALLY works, if it accounts for up to half of the cost of the projector.

► So how long does a lamp really last?

In projectors with a typical lamp crash, the visual need to change the lamp (this is approximately 50% loss of brightness) appears after 1000 hours of operation in standard mode and after 2000 hours in eco mode. In projectors with soft lamp off, these periods are approximately twice as long – 2000 and 4000 hours, respectively.

  Module (block) – a plastic case in which the lamp is installed. Designed for easy lamp replacement in the projector.

  In most cases, when the lamp fails, nothing happens to the module.
  Therefore, in most cases, it is enough to replace only the lamp. Price for bare lamps
  below, but the lamp with the module is easier to change. If the module has a chip
  (microcircuit) – it is necessary to change the lamp together with module
