Overview
Air source portable heat pumps are the most efficient way to employ spot heating in a wide range of uses. Portable heat pumps can produce far more heat than electric space heaters – about 3 times as much heat, while operating more efficiently. OceanAire’s range of deluxe portable commercial air conditioning units are also safer than electric space heaters which present obvious fire hazards.
Air Source Portable Heat Pumps
OceanAire’s range of air source portable heat pump units include:
2OACH Series (12,000 BTU/HR to 60,050 BTU/HR)
Common uses for portable heat pumps include:
- Supplemental Heating
- Emergency Heating
- Spot Heating for Specific Areas
- Backup Heating for HVAC Repair during Renovation / Upgrades
A heat pump is often used as supplemental heat source within office buildings, retail spaces, manufacturing / storage and process heating, inside schools, hospitals and often for special events. The most common type of portable heat pump uses ambient air to heat a space. All that is required is to simply plug the portable heat pump unit in. There is no outside access needed to dispel exhaust.
What is a Portable Heat Pump?
A portable heat pump works in the opposite way a portable air-sourced air conditioner works. The air cooling process is used to produce heat.
Portable heat pumps are a relatively new technology which enables spot heating (and often cooling as well) in a wide range of environments. OceanAire manufactures a range of portable heat pumps to suit various applications. Whether for emergency heating or to provide temporary heat in any space, we manufacture a product that will suit your heating needs quietly and efficiently.
How Does a Portable Heat Pump Work?
A portable heat pump works like a portable air conditioner but in reverse. Instead of discharging the hot air ‘byproduct’ through ducting to an external outlet, a portable heat pump disperses hot air into the room. Using the ambient air to heat a room is a far better way to warm a space. Quiet and efficient portable heat pumps from OceanAire are quality built to last and are made in the USA for years of commercial and industrial heating applications.

Heating with air conditioning in winter is profitable!
More and more questions began to sound: “Is it possible to turn on the air conditioner for heating in winter or is it not intended for this? What models of air conditioners are better to use to get heat in winter? It’s time to figure it out!
In the modern world, there are practically no split systems left that cannot heat the air, because technologically it is very easy to introduce the possibility of heating into the air conditioning system. A four-way valve is installed inside the outdoor unit, which changes the direction of the refrigerant when switching modes.
It is worth noting that the air conditioner was created precisely as a device that cools the air and for the most part serves people with a warm climate. But, unfortunately, conditions in Krasnoyarsk are much harsher than in most regions of the world.
When to use an air conditioner for heating is advisable
So, let’s take a closer look at the cases in which the use of an air conditioner in winter is economically beneficial for the user:
1) Off-season. It’s no secret that heating in our apartments does not come all year round. And, unfortunately, the establishment of a comfortable temperature at home and on the street does not always coincide. So, when the heating has already been turned off or has not yet been turned on and you need heating in the air conditioner! The air conditioner creates comfortable and very economical heat. The cost of heating with an air conditioner is several times lower than with an electric heater, because the air conditioner only transfers heat, and does not create it.
2) Cool summer. Not every summer in Krasnoyarsk is very hot. Sometimes daytime temperatures in summer are 15-17 degrees, and nighttime temperatures are 10. Then your friend comes to the rescue – air conditioning! Turn it on for heating, or in automatic mode, set the temperature that is comfortable for you, and after a few minutes you can take off your woolen socks.
3) Mild winter. Fortunately, we are sometimes lucky and the winter is not very severe. Most air conditioners quietly work for heating when it is not colder than zero degrees outside. Most inverter models of air conditioners are designed for heating when the outdoor temperature is not colder than minus 7.
But the most advanced inverters, for example, the Mitsubishi Heavy SRK25ZM-S inverter air conditioner, work confidently for heating at temperatures down to minus 15 degrees. Such “winter air conditioners” are also present in other Japanese brands – Toshiba and Daikin.
Heating with air conditioning in a private house is real!
The energy efficiency indicators of the heating process in the best inverter models today have reached such high values that heating a private house with wall-mounted air conditioners is becoming a real alternative to classic water heating systems. Consuming 1 kW of electricity, an inverter split system is capable of producing 4-5 kW of heat, which is an absolute record in the field of electric heating!
True, the high energy efficiency of obtaining heat using a heat pump – an air conditioning system is maintained only up to an outdoor temperature of -15/20 degrees, and at lower values, air conditioning heating loses its attractiveness, as the efficiency approaches the performance of conventional electric heaters – consumes 1 kW of electricity, produces 0.95 kW of heat.
Separately, I would like to talk about such a topic as
Heating with mobile air conditioner? Can’t be!
Despite a common misconception, mobile air conditioners are not suitable for heating. Despite the fact that the instructions for some mobile models indicate the heating function, it is performed in a completely different way than in wall-mounted split systems.
To begin with, most of the mobile models do not know how to work for heating at all. Some devices provide for such a function, but it is implemented very “clumsily” – due to the built-in heating element of the “TEN” type, as in a conventional household fan heater. In this case, a 1 kW electric heating element will produce the same 1 kW of heat, and no more.
The most advanced mobile models have a heat pump function, but since this is a monoblock model without an outdoor unit, it cannot accumulate heat from the street. Heat is accumulated here not from outside air, but from indoor air, heat is simply accumulated from a large volume and transferred to a small volume – due to this, it appears that warm air is coming out of the air distribution grille. But in fact, no heat is added to the room … Therefore, mobile models of air conditioners, unfortunately, are not suitable for use for heating.
So let’s recap. In winter, heating with an air conditioner is, in principle, possible, but subject to a number of conditions: firstly, it can only be a wall-mounted air conditioner, and secondly, it is better that it be made using inverter technology, which allows you to expand the operating temperature range outside.
But to organize a quick heating in the apartment during the off-season, almost any wall-mounted air conditioner-split system is capable of organizing, regardless of what technology it is made of.
It’s easy to choose the right option in our solid CATALOG OF AIR CONDITIONERS! For permanent heating of a private house with the help of air conditioners, we recommend choosing INVERTER SPLIT SYSTEMS.
Heating with air conditioning not only in spring but also in winter is a convenient and economical way to get warm!
Features of mobile air conditioners for home, apartment, office
HVAC equipment manufacturers offer a wide range of household air conditioners of various models and modifications. They differ in the principle of operation, installation method, set of functions and other technical parameters.
The most popular models are wall-mounted split systems. They do not take up extra space in the room, they work silently and have a set of useful functions. But if for some reason it is not possible to install such a device, you can purchase an excellent alternative – a mobile floor air conditioner, which will also perfectly cope with the air cooling function to create a comfortable microclimate in your home or office.
In the article we will consider what is important to know about mobile air conditioners and split systems, an overview of the varieties, a description of the operation and device, what are the advantages and disadvantages.
Table of Contents:
What is floor mobile air conditioners
Floor mobile air conditioner is a compact portable type climatic device, consisting of a case weighing 40 kg or more (the greater the capacity, the greater the weight of the air conditioner).
Inside the monoblock is a compressor, evaporator, pump, fan and other important mechanisms that ensure the functionality of the device. The equipment may have wheels that simplify its movement.
The floor air conditioner does not require special installation, as is provided for when installing other types of climate equipment. The mobile device can be placed in any part of the room, right on the floor, but preferably closer to the window opening. This is important, since a flexible air duct hose must go out of the window from the main unit.
Advantages of mobile floor air conditioners:
- does not require complex installation, the installation of the device can be done by yourself;
- if necessary, the device can be easily disconnected from the flexible duct and transferred or transported for operation to another facility;
- affordable cost of equipment.
In addition, the floor-standing units have a very simple control system and easy setting of the operating mode. You can use the mobile air conditioner immediately after its installation.
Types of mobile air conditioners
There are two subspecies of outdoor climate equipment: mobile devices and floor-to-ceiling split systems.
Varieties of mobile air conditioners:
- without air duct;
- with air duct;
- with two air ducts;
- with heating;
- inverter models.
Let’s take a closer look at the types of floor air conditioners, their principle of operation, as well as the pros and cons.
Mobile portable air conditioner without air duct
Portable air conditioner without air duct is a compact monoblock containing fan, pump, water container, filters and control unit. It can be installed anywhere in the room. Works from the mains.
Principle of operation and devices
The principle of operation of the air conditioner without air duct is based on evaporation. The fan drives the air through the air and water filter, where it is cleaned and humidified. The cooling efficiency depends on the initial humidity in the room: the lower it is, the more heat is absorbed.
The moisture evaporated by the unit remains in the room, which requires regular ventilation, as waterlogging can cause breathing difficulties for a person.
Advantages and disadvantages
Air conditioners without ducting have their pros and cons.
Pros:
- mobility;
- no installation required;
- light monoblock weight;
- low noise level during operation;
- inexpensive cost.
Cons:
- such devices humidify the air more than cool it;
- due to the lack of an air duct, heated air freely enters the room, so it can be stuffy inside the house;
- does not have functions for maintaining cool air and adjusting the optimum temperature.
Air conditioners without ducts are useful for freshening the air. Such devices are convenient for summer residents, as they are easy to carry and do not require special installation.
Mobile air conditioner with duct
Ducted Floor Air Conditioner is a classic mobile unit consisting of a compact monobloc unit including filters, compressor, sensors, condenser, evaporator, fan, expansion valve and control box. A flexible corrugation is connected to the monoblock, which is displayed through the window to the street. The device is equipped with a container where condensate is collected. It must be removed manually.
Principle of operation and devices
The ducted air conditioner works according to the following principle: warm air enters the heat exchanger, where it is evaporated, passes through the cleaning filter and returns to the room already cooled. The heated air exits through a corrugated pipe to the street.
Floor air conditioners run on freon from the mains. You can use the device after installation with the obligatory output of the corrugation through a window or window.
Advantages and disadvantages
Floor-standing models of climatic equipment have their advantages and disadvantages.
Pros:
- easy installation;
- mobility;
- small size and weight of a monoblock;
- moderate noise during operation;
- simple control system;
- smooth cooling mode;
- reasonable price.
Cons:
- the device can be moved in the room for short distances, according to the length of the connected hose;
- manual condensate removal;
- dry the air;
- takes up space in the room;
- air duct through the window opening somewhat disturbs the interior of the room.
Modern models of floor-standing air conditioners with an air duct have extended functionality: air ionization, heating, etc. The more options in the device, the higher its price.
Two-duct mobile air conditioner
A variation of mobile floor-standing air conditioners – models with two air ducts, equipped with an additional hose for air intake from the street.
Principle of operation and device
Air conditioners with two and one air duct are similar in principle of operation and structure of the monoblock.
Advantages and disadvantages
Double duct units have some advantages and disadvantages.
Pros:
- do not dry out the air in the room;
- Improved system efficiency.
Cons: slightly more expensive than single duct models.
These devices are ideal for installation in poorly ventilated rooms.
Mobile air conditioner with heating
The range of floor-mounted air conditioners also includes models with a heating function. The heating element is a heating element.
Principle of operation and devices
These air conditioners operate on the principle of a heat pump. The air flow passes through the heating element and, taking heat, penetrates into the room, raising the temperature. When switching modes, it works for cooling. Equipped with a simple control system.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like other types of air conditioning equipment, floor heating air conditioners have their pros and cons.
Pros:
- two operating modes;
- work at any temperature outside;
- create high-quality space heating;
- consume a relatively small amount of electricity.
Of the minuses: a higher price compared to floor models that operate only for cooling.
Inverter mobile air conditioner
Modern manufacturers also produce floor standing inverter air conditioners. Such devices do not turn on and off when the set temperature is reached, as happens in linear models, but smoothly regulate the operating mode to evenly maintain the optimum air temperature in the room.
Principle of operation and devices
Air conditioners are equipped with an inverter that controls the speed of the engine. Automatic speed control allows the device to work smoothly and evenly, without creating temperature fluctuations.
Advantages and disadvantages of
Consider the main advantages and disadvantages of inverter floor air conditioners.
Pros:
- Maintain accurate temperature to within 0.5 0 ;
- reduced noise level during operation;
- energy savings (inverters consume 20-25% less).
Cons:
- high cost of equipment and expensive repairs;
- are sensitive to power fluctuations.
Inverter air conditioners are not recommended for installation in rooms where there are frequent power outages, which leads to their rapid failure.
Mobile split-system
A type of mobile air conditioners – floor-to-ceiling type split-system. They are completed with two blocks: external, installed from the street side, and internal. The indoor unit has a special fixing system to the ceiling surface. Thus, the owner can make floor or ceiling mounting.
Principle of operation and devices
Principles of operation of mobile and conventional split systems do not differ.
Advantages and disadvantages
The main advantage of placing the appliance on the ceiling is the rapid cooling of the air and its uniform distribution throughout the room.
Other advantages of mobile split systems:
- low noise level;
- more powerful than conventional floor models;
- simple installation of equipment.
Cons:
- mobility of the indoor unit is limited by the length of the hose;
- are more expensive than conventional air conditioners.
Before you make a purchase of climate control equipment, think carefully about which device will be optimal for creating a comfortable microclimate in a particular room, taking into account various nuances.
