Update software for printers and MFPs HP has blocked the work of many printing devices with non-original cartridges. The company claims that print cartridges that use third-party chips can pose a threat to hardware performance, print quality, and user safety.

Firmware – the software required for the operation of printers – was automatically updated by HP. The update is international. The problem was reported by users from different countries.

New firmware prevents customers from using any cartridges other than genuine HP chip cartridges. However, they almost always cost more than third-party cartridges. Now, when trying to use a non-original consumable, many HP printers simply refuse to print.

In response to outraged users whose printers stopped working, HP representatives said that the block only applies to printers that support Dynamic Security, which the company launched in 2016. Dynamic Security is part of HP’s cartridge authentication process, which, according to the company’s website, is to “protect the quality of our customer experience, maintain the integrity of our printing systems, and protect our intellectual property.”

Dynamic Security has already caused conflicts and lawsuits against HP. In 2020, HP reached a $1.5 million settlement with US customers in a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company’s firmware acts like “malware” by “adding, removing, or changing code that reduces the capabilities of HP printers.

In Europe, pursuant to an agreement reached between HP and the European consumer organization Euroconsumers, the company has agreed to set up a fund of up to $1,350,000 to compensate certain HP printer owners for losses allegedly incurred as a result of not knowing that their printers are equipped with Dynamic Security, which will limit their functionality when using third-party cartridges.

In response to criticism from users, HP was forced to release an update that allowed the removal of Dynamic Security from the firmware of printers. HP representatives said that printers using Dynamic Security will be labeled both on product packaging and in printed technical and online materials.

However, owners of HP printing devices note that some printers still cannot disable Dynamic Security, and there is no special marking of models that support Dynamic Security on the websites of most HP printer sellers and even on official product pages.

According to the British edition of The Telegraph, company representatives claim that they have released the latest update to reduce the risk of malware attacks, and that, in their opinion, cartridges that use third-party chips can pose a threat not only to hardware performance, print quality , but also for the safety of users”.

Experts agree that unauthorized printer and MFP cartridges do increase cybersecurity risks.

“Using a vulnerability in a cartridge chip is an attack vector that the manufacturer has already warned about earlier. The seriousness of this is also demonstrated by the fact that HP included cartridges in the bug bounty program,” says Dmitry Galov, expert “Indeed, when using third-party reprogrammable chips, there is a risk of malware infecting the device, and it will not be deleted even when the cartridge is removed.”

At the same time, experts note that attacks using such tools are complex and will not become widespread.
