What to Look For in a Micro ATX Motherboard

Micro ATX motherboards might be great for saving you a bit of space and are often cheaper than full-sized ATX motherboards, but you should know you’re making a few sacrifices. Chiefly these smaller boards often come with fewer PCIe slots—or even just one on certain models. So, you should think about how many graphics cards, sound cards, capture cards, and other PCIe cards you want to install when deciding which mATX motherboard is right for you. Also, be sure you’re grabbing a board with at least one PCIe 4.0 x 16 slot, so you can take advantage of that high bandwidth. Some of the Intel boards even come toting support for PCIe 5.0.

The smaller printed circuit board you get with mATX motherboards also means you’re probably going to have fewer M. 2 slots for NVMe and SATA SSDs. The good news is most boards of this size have a least two M.2 slots, but don’t expect there to be four or five like on some of the most premium ATX parts.

Other important factors to consider are the same as what you’d look for on traditional motherboards. You want CPU sockets that support the latest processors. For Intel boards, you should look for LGA1700 sockets. While on AMD boards, you should seek out AM4. Also, be sure to look for speedy memory support. You want a board that can support your RAM.

  • What is the difference between E-ATX, ATX, mATX and Mini-ITX

    One of the main characteristics of the motherboard is the form factor. Simply put, this is the physical size of the board itself, as well as layout features. The most common formats are E-ATX, ATX, mATX and Mini-ITX.

    Size

    The most obvious and most noticeable difference is the physical size of the board. The largest dimensions are E-ATX or Extended ATX boards (305 × 330 mm), followed by ATX (305 × 244 mm), Micro-ATX or mATX (244 × 244 mm) and the most compact Mini-ITX (170 × 170 mm) .

    First of all, compatibility with the case is important, which also has its own classification: Full Tower, Midi Tower, Mini Tower, etc. As a rule, computer cases support installation under several board options at once. So, both Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX are placed in the Mini Tower format case. But installing a standard ATX board will no longer work (although there are such models).

    If you want to build a compact system, then you need Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX motherboards. The advantage of a large case is better ventilation, enough space for expansion cards and drives, the ability to install a tall cooler or a bulky water cooling system. That is, a large body can corny can accommodate the most. Be it hard drives or three video cards.

    In general, an office computer does not need much cooling, so the compact format is perfect. But for a powerful gaming or work computer, you need to choose models with good ventilation. Especially if the hardware is overclocked.

    Functionality

    Although the smaller boards cannot be fully considered defective or truncated, they are still limited in functionality. First of all, because of the physical size: in order to reduce the size, you have to sacrifice slots on the motherboard.

    Micro-ATX boards have fewer PCI-Express slots, moreover, they can be located in such a way that a massive video card (and modern gaming solutions are all like that) completely blocks them. And even if you install, for example, a sound card will work, it will be located close to the hot video card. This is generally not a problem, but there is not much good here either.

    Thus, it turns out that Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX boards often do not allow you to install anything other than a video card. If you do not need additional equipment, then this cannot be called a disadvantage. Here everyone chooses individually: compact size or additional slots.

    Also, among Micro-ATX, there are more often options with only two slots for RAM, and on Mini-ITX four slots are completely exotic. At the same time, standard ATXs are equipped with four slots and, with rare exceptions, two. All this imposes additional restrictions on the maximum amount of memory and upgrade opportunities.

    Cost

    There is a price difference between ATX and Micro-ATX, but it is not always significant. However, if you’re looking to build a computer for less, chances are the lowest prices will be for Micro-ATX motherboards.

    As for Mini-ITX boards, the price range for them is quite large. You can find both expensive models and more affordable ones. Another thing is that the choice is generally less than that of ATX and Micro-ATX. E-ATX motherboards will cost the most, as this solution is mainly for workstations.

    In addition, it is worth considering the cost of the case. Mini tower cases are usually cheaper. In any case, in the line of one manufacturer.     MSI Pro Series B250 Pro-VDH

    The MSI Pro Series B250 Pro-VDH is a board with a number of built-in outdated video outputs that still has great functionality. At one time it was the best, but now it’s a great board in the middle price segment, although closer to its upper limit. This is a reliable model with an unusual set of functions for its age. It has HDMI, VGA and DVI ports, but lacks a built-in DisplayPort output. At the same time, it has a USB-C port, which is usually found only on newer boards.

    Unfortunately, given the age of the model, the number of these boards on the market is somewhat limited, which caused a price increase. However, if you can find it on sale or on sale, it’s a great option for any hobbyist build.

    EVGA X299 Micro ATX 2

    The EVGA X299 Micro ATX 2 is a great example of a modern high-end motherboard. With the possible exception of another premium model, the X399M Taichi, which we will review below, this is the most powerful car in our fleet. In particular, it boasts support for quad-channel RAM up to 128 GB.

    Of course, like any high-end motherboard, the X299 also supports multiple graphics cards. And although it is not cheap, its price is very attractive for the premium segment. If you’re looking for a powerful motherboard at a reasonable price, look no further.

    ASRock X399M Taichi

    ASRock X399M Taichi is the older brother of the EVGA X299 discussed above, both in terms of premium features and in terms of price. But although this board is the most expensive in our selection, it also has the widest functionality. Like X299, Taichi supports up to 128GB of RAM. But unlike the X299, there are three PCIe x16 slots, the largest on this list. Of course, you can hardly fit three graphics cards into this board, but in any case, this gives you fantastic flexibility.

    The only thing missing is the built-in video outputs. On the other hand, it is unlikely that anyone would buy a board of this class without a discrete graphics card, especially for a gaming PC. But if for some reason you need to connect the monitor directly to the motherboard (for example, if the video card breaks down), you will have to use a USB cable.

    Another advantage is that this is one of the few microATX motherboards that supports AMD Threadripper processors. Therefore, if you plan to assemble a computer with such a processor on a compact board, this model is for you.

    MSI B450M Pro-M2

    The B450 line of motherboards has an exceptional number of high performance models, and the two boards we’ve featured in this article showcase that perfectly. Like the Gaming Plus reviewed above, the MSI B450 Pro-M2 is a great compromise between looks and features. Like Gaming Plus, it has a number of interesting features that also make it worthy of your attention.

    This board is one of the best gaming boards we’ve reviewed and it comes in two versions: original and V2. We’ve included the original in this compilation because it’s less of a problem, but it’s worth noting that the V2 version is cheaper. Perhaps this is due to the high demand for the original version, or perhaps because the original is no longer produced and is less common. Most importantly, if you’re not a fan of MSI’s black and red color scheme, which is common among other models, this board is made in a much more modest black and gray color scheme. Many people like it more, especially if a lot of red is not planned in the assembly.

    MSI h410M Gaming Plus

    MSI h410M Gaming Plus is a less powerful cousin of the B450M Gaming Plus presented at the beginning of the article, but for Intel processors, not AMD. This model is slightly older, but the same year as the B450M Gaming Plus. Therefore, it is rather not outdated, but deliberately conceived as lightweight and budget.

    This is the cheapest board in our review and it’s really inexpensive. However, as is the case with most budget options, you will have to sacrifice some performance in order to save money. Fortunately, this does not affect the appearance – of course, if you like MSI’s signature black and red style. In general, this is a high-quality and reliable board, and despite the somewhat limited functionality compared to other models, it has everything you need for a budget PC.

    Rounding out our list of motherboards is the Gigabyte AB350M-DS3H, another model from previous collections that remains relevant. It’s not new, but it’s not outdated either, and it boasts a lot of attractive features. In particular, this board has 4 memory slots, as well as 2 PCIe-16 slots, which will allow you to squeeze the maximum performance out of this baby with fairly moderate effort. In addition, there is a nice LED strip here.

    Unfortunately, this board has the same overpriced issue as the MSI Pro-Series B250. However, as with the B250, be sure to consider buying it if you can find one at a discount.

    Conclusion

    In the end, every reliable and high performance motherboard has its pros and cons. All the models presented in this collection are good, but depending on the specific situation, some may be more preferable.

    But overall, our favorite model on this list is the MSI MPG Z390M Gaming Edge AC. It may not be a budget motherboard, but it has enough features at a reasonable price. You’ll be hard-pressed to find anything that compares in terms of performance, reliability, and design unless you’re willing to shell out double the money for a premium price.

    If you’re willing to splurge, we recommend the ASRock X399M Taichi , especially if you’re looking for the ultimate motherboard. Even though it’s not the latest model, it holds up great and still outperforms most boards on the market.

    On the other hand, if you want to save money, the MSI h410M Gaming Plus is a good option. She has somewhat more modest characteristics, but the price matches them. For the price of a restaurant dinner, you get everything you need to get started, so this model is great for budget builds or beginners.
