2021

Editor’s note, Dec. 4: The Bose SoundLink Flex now has a CNET Editors’ Choice Award. The original review, published Nov. 11, follows.

When it launched, Bose made some bold claims about the sound quality of the SoundLink Flex, particularly its bass performance. The exact quote was that it has “astonishing bass … that you can feel in your chest.” There’s a bit of marketing hyperbole going on there, but I gotta say, it mostly lives up to the hype. For its size, the Flex packs surprisingly bold sound, is fully waterproof and should be near the top of your list if you’re looking for a portable Bluetooth speaker. In fact, it’s the only new Bluetooth speaker we’ve given a CNET Editors’ Choice Award in 2021.

Available in three color options — black, white smoke and stone blue — the Flex is IP67 dust- and waterproof. It also floats, an important feature if you’re in the habit of dropping your Bluetooth speakers in your pool or another body of water. I personally wouldn’t want to drop it anywhere, but Bose says that thanks to its soft silicone back and powder-coated steel grille it “won’t peel or flake and is resistant to corrosion and UV light.” So it’s designed to be durable and can survive small drops.

That silicone finish is indeed soft to the touch, but I’ll note that it does attract a bit of dust and lint that shows more on the black version. I liked the speaker in blue, but the white one was a close second. There are buttons on top for controlling playback, which is always good to have, although most people will just use their phone as a remote to play music. One thing that’s missing is an audio input, so you can’t connect an audio device via an auxiliary cable. This is strictly a Bluetooth speaker.

Three color options.

Bose’s SoundLink Micro, released in late 2017 and due for an upgrade, also delivers impressive sound for its tiny size. The Flex does look and feel like it’s in the same family but is basically twice as big, weighing 1.3 pounds or 0.59 kg — and it sounds significantly better than the Micro, with better battery life. With the price for the Micro rising to $119, the Flex is clearly the better value at this point for only $30 more.

The Flex uses the older Bluetooth 4.2 instead of 5.1, which seems unusual given that most new Bluetooth speakers use Bluetooth 5.1. Bose told us it didn’t see a significant benefit for its customers to going from Bluetooth 4.2 to Bluetooth 5.1 because the enhancements had “no bearing on the A2DP performance of the Flex” (since there was no change in the spec for A2DP audio in 5. 1).  And given that limited benefit of upgrading to 5.1, the company made the decision to use a chip it had previously used in the SoundLink Micro that had been “thoroughly field-tested and updated over time for interoperability and reliability.”

I didn’t have any problems with connectivity — it was generally rock-solid — but for those looking for extended wireless range, this is only listed as having the standard Bluetooth range of 30 feet or 10 meters. Battery life is rated at 12 hours at moderate volume levels, which is pretty good. It’s basically got twice the battery life of the SoundLink Micro and charges via USB-C instead of Micro-USB.

Watch this: Bose’s SoundLink Flex packs some serious punch

Multipositional

The speaker is designed to be propped up horizontally, laid down flat or hung vertically by its integrated loop. Bose shows it in pictures with a carabiner attached to the loop but no carabiner is included, you have to supply your own. But it’s good that there is a loop and it does seem pretty sturdy.

The speaker’s sound is automatically optimized according to the position you have it. I tended to keep it upright but it does have a built-in microphone, so you might lay it down flat if you’re using it as a speakerphone with a few people sitting around it. It’s pretty good at picking up your voice and puts out a lot more sound than your phone’s tiny speakers.

Bose says the SoundLink Flex can fill a living room with sound. From my tests, I’d say it would have to be a relatively small living room — it can only output so much sound — and to be clear, this is a mono speaker. But the key is that it does manage to produce more bass than you think it can. Also, it avoids distorting at higher volumes and delivers good clarity in the treble and midrange, with overall well-balanced sound that’s only slightly bass forward.

You’re going to be immediately impressed by how much sound it throws off, and decent sound at that. But it can’t totally escape being a small speaker. The soundstage only gets so wide and it can sound a little constrained with more complicated music tracks that have a lot of instruments playing at the same time. To avoid distortion, certain frequencies get ratcheted back, particularly at higher volumes.

Sound comparisons

I compared the SoundLink Flex with several other compact portable speakers. The one that it seems to get compared to the most is the JBL Charge 5, which costs $180 and is also fully waterproof with an IP67 rating. The Charge 5 is a bit bulkier and puts out a little more sound. Its bass is bigger but arguably boomier and more forward so the mids, where vocals live, can sound a little recessed. The Bose has a better overall tonal balance and the bass has more definition. I preferred its sound overall. Both speakers lack EQ settings in their apps, so you have to go with their signature sound. That’s fine by me, but a lot of people like having some sort of EQ settings to play around with.

The speaker is fully waterproof and floats.

David Carnoy/CNET

I thought it compared pretty favorably with the $179 Sonos Roam, which is also an excellent wireless speaker that has Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth and connects to your Sonos system at home. The Bose is more straightforward to use because it’s Bluetooth-only.

The Bose’s sound also has more body and depth to it than that of the UE Wonderboom 2, an older model that costs $100 and also manages to deliver good sound for its compact size. I also like Bang & Olufsen’s Beosound A1 2nd generation. The Bose beats that more expensive model as well, offering more full-bodied sound. But the A1 does offer multipoint Bluetooth pairing so you can pair it simultaneously with your phone and a computer. The Flex does not appear to have that feature, although you can pair it with multiple devices and manually switch back and forth between them.

Some people have asked me how it sounds compared with Bose’s canister-style Revolve ($219), which was marginally updated last year. That model is a bit more expensive and produces a bit more sound but it doesn’t really sound any better, and I prefer the Flex’s design. The larger Revolve Plus ($329) has the Flex beat, but that speaker costs more than twice as much — you could buy two Flexes for the same price. And that might not be a bad idea.

The speaker charges via USB-C and includes a cable but no power adapter.

David Carnoy/CNET

That’s because while the speaker sounds good as a single speaker, you get a big increase in sound quality when you pair two Flexes together in stereo mode. I felt the same way about the Sonos Roam. You just get real stereo separation and both the soundstage and bass seem so much bigger. As a pair, they sound like real speakers and indeed can fill a decent-size living room with sound. I should also note that you can link up the Flex with other Bose speakers in party mode — in other words, you can mix and match — but to get stereo you’ll need another Flex.

Bose SoundLink Flex final thoughts

I’ll finish by saying that pricing for Bluetooth speakers has been a little weird these days, with all the supply chain issues and chip shortages. And by weird, I mean that prices only seem to be going up and not much is on sale. So even though $150 might sound like a lot to some people, it’s a decent price for a top Bluetooth speaker these days and quite reasonable for Bose. As I said at the beginning, if you’re looking for a portable Bluetooth speaker, the Bose SoundLink Flex should definitely be on your radar if not at the top of your list.

Bose SoundLink Flex Review | PCMag

Bose hasn’t released a new Bluetooth speaker in some time, and so the SoundLink Flex is a welcome, versatile option, with an outdoor-friendly build and impressive rumble for its portable size and $149 price. The Flex has a mono driver and its companion app doesn’t offer any EQ settings, but its speakerphone sounds clear, and in addition to being waterproof, it even floats. It doesn’t quite edge out our Editors’ Choice winner in this price range, the $179.95 JBL Charge 5, but for Bose fans, the Flex’s durability and audio performance won’t disappoint.

It Floats

Measuring 3.6 by 7.9 by 2.1 inches (HWD), the 1.3-pound SoundLink Flex is available in black, off-white, or grayish-blue. The Bose logo emblazons the front of the speaker and a large grille runs the length of the panel. Beneath the grille, a full-range, 60mm transducer delivers the audio alongside dual passive radiators that help enhance bass depth. Bose doesn’t share wattage or frequency range details, but, based on our testing, the Flex can pump out some serious power.

A rubberized material covers the rest of the speaker. Feet on the back and bottom panels allow you to position the Flex so that it can either project forward or upward. A smaller grille on the back covers the back-firing passive radiator, while a built-in loop on the right lets you hang the speaker from a carabiner or hook (Bose doesn’t include either).

The top panel (or side panel when the speaker projects upward) has a strip for controls running along its length. From left to right, there’s a power button, a minus button (for volume), a central multifunction button, a plus button (volume), a pinhole mic for the speakerphone, and a Bluetooth pairing button. The multifunction button handles playback, call management, and track navigation; press twice to skip forward or three times to navigate backward.

Bose includes a USB-A-to-USB-C cable for charging via the speaker’s USB-C port on the left panel.  It estimates the SoundLink Flex can last roughly 12 hours on battery, but your results will vary based on your volume levels. The Flex is compatible with Bluetooth 4.2 and supports the SBC codec, but not AAC or AptX.

An IP67 rating means the speaker is dust-tight and fully waterproof much. Technically, you can dunk and submerge it, but it’s designed to float, so you can throw it in the pool and it’ll keep playing without sinking.

Positional Sound and App Options

Bose claims that its PositionIQ technology ensures that the Flex always sounds as it should, whether placed flat and firing upward, or hanging from its loop. An internal IMU sensor(Opens in a new window) keeps track of the speaker’s orientation and, depending on the sensor’s reading, adjusts the directional midrange and high frequencies for optimal listening. Bose predefines an EQ curve that it thinks sounds best for every potential position of the transducer; the speaker automatically adjusts the audio to match this curve when the sensor detects a specific position. In testing, I couldn’t hear much difference in performance, which is a testament to the sensor working.

However, I have a somewhat theoretical issue with this technology: The speaker’s ability to sense its position is only one part of the puzzle. PositionIQ doesn’t use sensors or mics to measure anything outside of the speaker in real time, so when it’s sitting upright, for instance, it can’t determine whether it’s pointed at you or a wall, or whether it’s angled toward your torso or aligned with your ears. In effect, the predetermined EQ curves are more like a best guess at where you might be sitting and how the audio will interact with the environment it’s in. It doesn’t perform more complicated calculations to account for your real-time position or the shape and materials of the listening environment.

That said, the speaker sounded good in nearly every scenario I tested it in, so the technology must work on some level—or the adjustments are subtle enough as to not matter.

The Bose Connect app for Android and iOS lets you update the firmware of the speaker and access a user manual, as well as enable or disable voice prompts and adjust the auto-off timer. You can also pair the SoundLink Flex with other Bose speakers via the app—it can be set up as a left or right channel of a stereo pair, as well.

There’s no user-adjustable EQ here, though. Bose has shown time and again that it’s not interested in providing adjustable EQ for most of its products, but we’ll never get tired of wondering why. An adjustable EQ greatly enhances the experience, because it lets you tailor the sound to your taste.

Bass-Forward Sound, Clear Mics

The Bose SoundLink Flex boasts a rich, bass-forward sound signature, with a focus on lows and low-mids, but not sub-bass. This speaker is simply too small to recreate a truly deep rumble.

See How We Test Speakers

On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the SoundLink Flex delivers a powerful low-frequency response that sounds as if it’s coming from a larger speaker. At top volumes, the bass flirts with distortion, but digital signature processing (DSP) keeps things in check. At just slightly lower volume levels, the lows are more robust and cleaner as the DSP eases back a bit.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Flex’s sound signature. The drums on this track sound full and round and Callahan’s baritone vocals benefit from added low-mid richness. Higher frequencies are present, but the high-mids sound dialed back a bit compared with the highs, which adds a little bit of brightness and edge to the mix.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop receives enough high-mid presence for its attack to retain its punch, but again, produces a little less high-mid presence than we’d like to hear. The sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat come across with enough push from the passive radiators that you at least get a sense of the deep bass you’re missing out on. The drum loop, however, gets some serious added thump. The speaker delivers vocals cleanly and clearly, with perhaps the slightest bit of added sibilance at times.

Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, have a nice fullness to them through the SoundLink Flex—the lower-register instrumentation is rich, but not overly boosted. The higher-register brass, strings, and vocals have a natural crispness and brightness. The speaker still leans toward the lows and low-mids, but shows a slightly better balance on orchestral and jazz recordings like this than on tracks with seriously deep bass.

The speakerphone mic offers strong intelligibility. In testing its performance using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone, we could easily understand every word we recorded. The Bluetooth audio artifacts that often fuzz up a mic signal are at a minimum here, and even from a distance, the mic captured voices well. On a solid cell signal, callers should be able to understand you without issue.

Well Priced and Waterproof

Although it doesn’t deliver accurate sound (it’s a mono speaker with bass boosting that it isn’t shy about), the Bose SoundLink Flex is portable and powerful, far more important traits for its category. Unlike some other products in the Bose lineup, the SoundLink Flex doesn’t suffer from the brand-name markup treatment, either—$150 is a fair price for its features and build. The speaker’s primary competition comes from JBL and Sony: The aformentioned JBL Charge 5 ($180) and the Sony SRS-XB33 ($150) are both excellent alternatives, with the Charge 5 delivering more power and the SRS-XB33 offering lighting effects in addition to strong sound quality. The stylish Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 is another strong alternative that delivers quality sonics, albeit at a notably higher $250 price. But if you like Bose, the SoundLink Flex is easy to recommend.
