Best Windows Laptop under $200 vs best Chromebook under $200
Something to be aware of, particularly when you’re restricting yourself to a budget of around $200, is that many of the options you’ll find online will be Chromebooks, rather than Windows laptops. Whilst both devices have their pros and cons, the user experience and capabilities of each are quite different, and you definitely need to be aware of this before you make your purchase.
Chromebooks are basically devices that require constant internet in order to work effectively. They use a completely different operating system – Chrome OS – which is heavily integrated with the Google Chrome web browser for many of its functions. It is very much reliant upon access to The Cloud for its processing and functions, which does mean it has the advantage of not needing as powerful core components (the CPU in particular) which means it can be lighter, and either cheaper or the same amount of money spent on improving the other components. Have a read of our best Chromebook guide for more info on these devices.
Windows machines however are much better for offline use or if you have a haphazard internet connection, or are reliant upon software that is Windows only. We’ll be listing examples of both types in this guide to cover all bases.

How We Review
Pros
- 2K resolution display for a very cheap price
- 8GB of RAM
- 256GB SSD
- microSD card reader
Cons
- soft keyboard
This 14-inch CHUWI Windows 11 Laptop has features and specs that are a rare sight at this price point. 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM is no guarantee for around the $200 mark, and on top of this you get a 256GB SSD – the ideal amount for a portable general-use laptop at this price point.
Even more impressively, you get a high-res 2K (2160 x 1440) display – a very rare sight indeed at this budget AND a microSD card reader, in addition to the USB-A 3.0 port, USB-C port, and 3.5mm audio combo jack. All of this makes it an ideal lowest-budget pick for creatives on the move.
The Intel Celeron Gemi Lake N5100 isn’t quite the most powerful CPU you can get on this budget, but it’s not far off. You won’t be able top do much other than browse the web and write/read documents with such a budget chipset, but that’s no different than any of the other picks on this page.
The main downside of this device is that the keyboard isn’t the best – it’s quite soft and spongey to type on – there are better options on this page that give a more satisfying clicky experience, though they won’t match up in terms of all the other features combined.

How We Review
Pros
- The best CPU for the price
- good build quality for such a cheap machine
- microSD card reader
Cons
- only 128GB eMMC Flash Memory on the lowest spec model
- only 4GB RAM on the lowest spec model
This Lenovo 2022 IdeaPad 1 is the a 15″ Windows laptop that has the most powerful CPU on this page: specifically the Intel N6000. Now this isn’t saying much, considering none of the picks here are heavy hitters, however it will reduce slowdowns compared to the other selections here when your laptop is under strain.
Unfortunately you are limited to only 4GB of RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage for the model in this price range, although you can always expand these after the point of purchase if you have any spare RAM / external SSD storage (see our how to upgrade laptop RAM page for some guidance).
You do however get the benefit of that 15-inch screen, plus a microSD card reader in addition to the two USB-A ports (1x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0), USB 3.0 Type-C socket, and 3.5mm combi-jack. You also get the best build quality that you’ll find for a laptop of this price.

How We Review
Pros
- good build quality for such a cheap machine
- microSD card reader
- a good array of ports
Cons
- only 4GB RAM on the lowest spec model
- only 1366 x 768 resolution
This ASUS VivoBook 14 thin & light machine is another 14-inch laptop. It might not have the best display on this page, and it is unfortunately limited to 4GB RAM for the options at this price, however it has the unique feature of coming with a HDMI port – deal for connecting to an external display without the need for buying an additional adapter.
The Intel N5030 CPU is not much less powerful than the picks above – sufficient for browsing and word processing etc. and it comes with the same Intel UHD 600 internal graphics as the rest.
Again you get the benefit of the superior build quality that you get on the larger Lenovo IdeaPad, plus a microSD card reader and the same selection of ports (despite it being smaller). Storage wise it actually has the edge of being 256GB in total (128GB eMMC +128GB PCIE SSD).
The main downside of this laptop is the lower than FHD resolution – only 1366 x 768. For this reason it’s not the best screen for viewing HD media on, though is still decent for typing and web browsing etc.

How We Review
Pros
- solid build quality
- Superb battery life
- Good array of ports & microSD card reader
Cons
- only 64GB eMMC Flash Memory
- only 4GB RAM
Another great Chromebook from Acer, the Acer 2023 Chromebook 1 has by far the best battery life of any machine on this page – with a hugely impressive 12 hours of general, non-strenuous use on battery saving mode.
The 15.6″ screen gives you plenty of screen real estate, yet because it’s a Chromebook the machine remains very light and portable.
You get as good a selection of ports and sockets as you would with nay other pick on this page (minus the HDMI port), including a microSD card reader.
The CPU and iGPU obviously aren’t as powerful as the Windows options, but as this is a Chromebook, they don’t need to be. That being said, we would have liked to have seen more memory and storage than the 4GB of RAM (particularly given the reliance on Google Chrome) and 64GB eMMC Flash Memory storage included (even if it is a mostly cloud-based platform).
Things to consider if you’re buying a laptop under 200 USD
RAM
The vast majority of laptops under $200 will only come equipped with 4GB of RAM, which really is less than you’d want when using a memory-hungry web browser for instance. It will certainly limit your ability to have multiple tabs open simultaneously, and run background applications whilst doing something else. The odd laptop under 200 USD may come with 6GB of RAM, and you can even find the rare 8GB example, but these will likely make sacrifices in other areas, so just be aware of this.
If your laptop is limited to 4GB we’d advise checking to see if it’s upgradable (often the RAM is soldered on and so this is not the case), and trying to upgrade your laptop RAM yourself at a later date if you find that you need it.
Disk space
The amount of hard drive storage you get will also be very limited on laptops under $200 – often as low as 128GB, which won’t give you a great deal of space to play with after your installation of Windows (though this won’t be as much of an issue for Chromebooks given you’ll store most stuff on The Cloud anyway). It’s somewhat easier to find a solution for this though, by buying an external hard drive to keep larger files on, and plug it into your laptop when necessary, or alternatively make use of cloud storage.
Maximum refresh rate
Any laptop for $200 or less will definitely be capped at the standard maximum refresh rate for the majority of laptop screens: 60Hz. This is in no way a problem for general usage, as there’s no real reason you’d want a higher refresh rate unless you’re gaming or editing video media at an FPS above 60, and for either of these uses, you’ll have to spend a lot more money than $200.
Have a look at our best gaming laptop under 500 page and you might find some examples of higher refresh rate models, though more likely you’re going to have to fork out a bit more and go to our gaming laptops under $600 and gaming laptops under $700 guides for a decent number of higher-refresh rate options.
Best laptop under $200 FAQs
Is 200 USD enough for a laptop?
$200 is very cheap for a laptop, however models do exist that could be worth your time, depending on what you’ll be using it for.
Obviously gaming on a $200 laptop is not a reality, and the RAM limitations will mean you won’t be able to have many tabs on your web browser open simultaneously without major slowdowns. The peak brightness will also likely not be high enough for brightly lit environments, or outside use.

The best laptop overall for 200 USD is the CHUWI Windows 11 Laptop, though which one is right for you ultimately depends on your needs and priorities. Check within for our top picks covering different sizes, display types, RAM, storage, and port selections.

Just because they’re economical, which means the best laptops under $200 are low-powered machines that won’t go too far in your computing needs. On the contrary, there are several good reasons why you should choose a budget laptop, whether it’s under $500 or even cheaper, as this list proves.
On the one hand, if you’re only planning on using your laptop to surf the Internet and spend money on your Netflix shows, spending $1,000 or more on one doesn’t make financial sense. There are plenty of top $200 laptops out there that will be more than enough, and you’d be better off spending the remaining $800 on a weekend getaway or the smart device you’ve been craving.
Another reason to get one of the best $200 laptops is if you’re a struggling college student who’s already buried in student loans. Again, it makes no sense to spend all that money you don’t have on a laptop I’ll only use for research, typing papers and watching movies in the evenings and weekends.
Whether it’s one of the best Chromebooks, the it’s perfect for you or the right Windows laptop, you’ll find something on our list of the best laptops under $200 that will save you some money and still satisfy your basic computing needs. 0004

HP’s small laptop might not look like much, and it’s a bit dated at the moment. But you shouldn’t judge this Chromebook by its tiny cover. For many reasons, the HP Chromebook 11 gets our vote as one of the best laptops under $200. For starters, for a cheap laptop, this one actually has a solid build and also boasts a responsive keyboard and a vibrant display.0004
It’s, of course, stripped inside, being a Chromebook, and you shouldn’t expect much in terms of features either. However, rest assured that its Intel Celeron processor and 4GB of memory are more than enough to power its lightweight Chrome operating system – not to mention handle your internet browsing and streaming needs.

Originally the same tiny Samsung Chromebook 3 costs just over $200, but there are many devices that sell for significantly less, new and refurbished. It’s therefore only right to add this popular Chromebook to our best sub-$200 laptops, though if you want more good reasons to consider this laptop other than saving a few bucks, we certainly have those too..
Whether it’s because of its water-resistant keyboard – a great feature if you’ve got young kids at home – or it’s because it offers up to 11 hours of battery life, you’ll be sold on this 11-inch laptop. And that’s without mentioning the fact that it looks like a premium laptop – and feels so’ built like one too.

While Dell’s Chromebook Inspiron 11 3181 did impress us with its decent multitasking capabilities, it’s its Windows counterpart that’s a total steal. The Dell Inspiron 11 3180 model is even cheaper and offers a Windows 10 S operating system that’s perfect for non-Chrome OS fans or those who prefer to stay in their familiar Windows 10 environment.
Sure, it’s not the fastest laptop out there, but for casual computer use, it won’t let you down, especially with better than average battery life. It also has a surprisingly decent number of ports, one of which is a microSD card reader, which you don’t see often these days, and a bright screen. It’s also durable, so you know it’ll survive its fair share of bumps and drops.

Lenovo is known for making premium laptops that deliver great performance in sleek form factors. But judging by the looks of the Lenovo Chromebook S330, it’s not weird about great budget laptops either. This Chromebook is one of the best laptops under $200 to consider in 2019. It is lightweight, strong and durable..
For its price, you shouldn’t expect a car that’s close to being perfect, and this one is certainly far from it. For example, its display could have been better, though a couple dozen extra might give you a better 1080p display. But for what it offers, this one’s definitely a very valuable product, with features like a 180-degree hinge, anti-glare coating on the display, and a solid speaker set. The Lenovo Chromebook S330 is a boon for Lenovo fans who need a lightweight laptop to do all the work of their Google Office suite.

A few years ago, finding a good $200 laptop was nearly impossible. These days, you can easily find inexpensive hardware that can play videos and surf the web smoothly and efficiently. Most of the laptops on this list are Chromebooks because Chrome OS is a much lighter operating system than Windows and macOS, meaning it can run on lower hardware. While laptops in this price range can handle most day-to-day and basic tasks, you’ll be hard-pressed to find better gaming laptops under $300 as you’ll need more powerful hardware than this price allows for gaming.

The main downside is that you can only get a maximum of 4GB of memory, so it can stutter a bit if you have too many things running at the same time. Port selection is ok; you get two USB-C with support for charging and video output, USB-A, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack.
#2 Acer Chromebook Spin 311 (2021)
Specifications:
- Processor – MediaTek MT8183
- GPU – ARM Mali-G72 MP3
- Operating system – Chrome OS
- RAM – 4 GB
- Memory – 32 GB
If you’re looking for a compact laptop that’s easy to carry around, the Acer Chromebook Spin 311 (2021) might be the one for you. It’s a great option for younger students who only need to do simple tasks like web browsing, text formatting, and video playback. Its compact size makes it very portable and it looks decently well built even though it’s all plastic. The keyboard is surprisingly comfortable for such a small device; however, the touchpad isn’t great as it doesn’t track very well, so it’s best to use a mouse.
This laptop’s MediaTek SoC is not very powerful, but it’s good enough to run Chrome OS and is very power efficient, delivering nearly 16 hours of battery life. It’s also fanless, so you won’t have to worry about loud fan noise in a quiet classroom.
#3 HP Pavilion x360 11 (2021)
Specifications:
- Processor – Intel Pentium Silver N5030
- GPU – Intel UHD Graphics 605
- Operating system – Windows 11
- RAM – 4 GB
- Memory – 128 GB
Need a Windows laptop instead of a Chromebook? Take a look at the HP Pavilion x360 11 (2021). Since Windows devices tend to be more expensive than Chromebooks, the price is slightly above the $200 mark. The benefit is that you have a full operating system that will allow you to install third party x86 apps that Chrome OS doesn’t support. The build quality is decent despite being plastic, and as the name suggests it has a 360-degree hinge so you can use it as a tablet. The screen appears reasonably sharp, the keyboard delivers satisfying typing, and the touchpad tracking is decent.
Its Intel Pentium Silver processor has enough processing power for general productivity tasks such as web browsing, text formatting, and video playback. However, it’s not particularly power efficient, with the battery lasting just under eight hours with light use. Plus, you can only get it with 4GB of storage, which means you’ll have to limit the number of apps you have open at the same time. It comes with Windows 11 in S mode, but you can upgrade to the full version of Windows for free.
#4 Lenovo Chromebook Duet (2020)
Specifications:
- Processor – MediaTek Helio P60T
- GPU – ARM Mali-G72 MP3
- Operating system – Chrome OS
- RAM – 4 GB
- Memory – 64 GB
If you’re looking for a 2-in-1 tablet with detachable keyboard, get the Lenovo Chromebook Duet (2020). You can detach the keyboard to make it easier to hold while browsing content, or attach it when you need to type something. It has a crisp, bright, and colorful display that’s hard to find on inexpensive Chromebooks.
The keyboard is included with the device, so you do not need to buy it separately. It doesn’t have the most comfortable keyboard; this is fine for a couple of emails, but not for typing a long article. Battery life is excellent as it lasts almost 12 hours of light productivity or seven hours of video playback.
#5 ASUS VivoBook L203MA Ultra-slim Notebook
Specifications:
- Display: 11.6″, HD, 1366×768
- Processor: Intel Celeron N4000, 2.6 GHz
- Video card: Intel UHD Graphics 600 RAM and
- Memory: 4GB DDR4, 64GB eMMC
- Operating system: Windows 10
Pros:
- Attractive appearance
- Portable design
- Affordable USB-C port
Cons:
- VGA webcam view
- Narrow corners
Design
Asus used plastic on the VivoBook E203MA, with a honeycomb pattern on the top of the lid. The inner side surfaces are dark gray and give a strong build impression. Overall, the Asus VivoBook L203MA feels very stable thanks to its compact size. However, with slight pressure, the lid flexes, and when the laptop leans against it, the lower right corner still creaks. The Asus E203MA keyboard is not designed for large hands. The keys are located very low, close to each other, providing a soft touch. However, typing works well after a while to adapt. Only the arrow keys and functions are not intuitive.
Users can use the ClickPad as a replacement for a mouse that is sized for an 11-inch laptop. When the left and right mouse buttons are released, it provides clear input. Moreover, it responds reliably to our input at every point. By unscrewing a few screws, you can easily open the bottom of the ASUS VivoBook L203MA laptop, but there is almost no room for future upgrades. Display The Asus VivoBook L203MA’s screen has a maximum resolution of 1366 x 720 pixels and consists of an 11. 6-inch TN LED panel. The luminosity is just right at an average brightness of 235 cd/m2 for a spot in the lower middle of our range of comparison instruments. However, 93 percent illumination is rated as very strong. During our measurements, the Asus L203MA’s display performance shows an average contrast ratio of 534:1 and a higher-than-usual black level of 0.44 cd/m2. But this laptop has an extremely low redpoint.
Calibration can compensate for this, but you end up with slightly higher blue levels as a result. In addition, the sRGB color space coverage averages only 54 percent, but this is more than enough for ordinary users. But if you want to use the Asus VivoBook L203MA laptop outdoors, it won’t be a good experience. The reflective panel is not enough to display the contents of the image in a readable way, in addition, the brightness levels are also low. This is possible in shady areas, but is very tiring on the eyes in the long run.
Workload performance The Intel Celeron N4000 processor provides the power of the ASUS VivoBook L203MA, paired with 4GB of RAM to deliver smooth overall performance. It has a built-in 4GB Intel UHD Graphics 600 unit which delivers reasonably good performance considering the price. A 64GB eMMC flash is available for the operating system and storage. According to the specifications, ASUS VivoBook L203MA is perfect for you if you want to do web surfing, typical office work and basic image editing. The Asus VivoBook L203MA came in second on our comparison list in PCMark versions 8 and 10.
Returning to the GPU, as we already mentioned, the integrated graphics unit Intel UHD Graphics 600 is responsible for displaying image content in the ASUS VivoBook L203MA. This GPU is only good for those applications where high graphics performance is not required. That’s why it does well with basic image editing, although more advanced work like 3D graphics outperforms the available options. The Intel UHD Graphics 600 lives up to our expectations in the 3DMark 11 performance test and comes in second on our comparison list. If you are interested in lightweight gaming, then unfortunately the ASUS VivoBook L203MA is not suitable for gaming at all.
#6 Lenovo IdeaPad 330
$200 laptop
Specifications:
- Display: 15.6″ HD 1366 x 768, AR
- Processor: Intel Celeron N4100 Quad Core 1.1 GHz
- Video card: Intel HD Graphics
- RAM and Storage: 4 GB DDR4, 500 GB HDD
- Operating system: Windows 10
Design
From the outside, the Lenovo IdeaPad 330 looks like a standard laptop. It’s a rounded rectangle with a silver cap in one corner with the Chrome logo. The body of the IdeaPad is neither thick nor thin, but the laptop’s silver lid and dark gray chassis are made of hard plastic. The interior of the laptop is just as boring, the thick bezels framing the low-res display will remind you of embarrassing GI glasses. However, on the positive side, the aluminum chassis can easily be confused with the polished metal finish of the deck, and the dark gray keyboard keys contrast well with the exterior. The Lenovo IdeaPad 330 weighs almost 4.85 pounds and measures 0.9x 10.2 x 14.9 in. You can easily carry this laptop with you as it is small, light and portable even compared to similar machines from other brands. Lenovo has focused more on the IdeaPad 330’s performance rather than its looks, which seems right as machine performance matters more to consumers.
Display
Since Lenovo’s IdeaPad 330 is a budget laptop, its 15.6-inch 720p screen is decent from this point of view, it’s quite bright and is an ideal choice for a laptop in this price range. However, at the same time, some of you may not like it at all due to the low panel resolution of 1366 x 768 TN. There are other similar machines with Full HD resolution 1920 x 1080 for almost the same price. As we all know, manufacturers have to save somewhere in the budget laptop category, and now you can see why the Lenovo IdeaPad 330 is available at a lower price compared to competing brands.
Its low resolution, which is better than other budget laptops with blurry displays in the same category, cannot be easily realized. First, before you get a spot that doesn’t wash out, you go fishing. Although for $ 300 it’s not great, but it’s not the worst for sure. You have to give credit to Lenovo for adding an anti-glare coating to the screen to keep reflections to a minimum, making the IdeaPad 330 an ideal choice for a sub-HD multimedia machine if you can view the screen. right from the right angle. So if you’re looking for a laptop that can perform well despite the low resolution screen, then the IdeaPad 330 is a great option for you.
Load performance
The Lenovo IdeaPad 330 is equipped with an Intel Celeron N processor, 4 GB DDR4 RAM and a 500 GB hard drive. With these specifications, you can only perform everyday typical office tasks, send emails, and surf the web on a laptop. There are only four Google Chrome tabs open. Whenever you play any 1080p YouTube video, it takes time to load. In our performance tests, the IdeaPad 330 ended up in the middle of a budget laptop.
