Flexibility Offered

“I first began working as a telecommuter as the single-parent of a special needs child. I needed something that would allow me to be available for her almost on-call, and something that would work around her many doctor appointments. I loved the fact that FlexJobs vets employers and listings so that I’m only reading legitimate flexible job postings.”

Best Buy is an American consumer electronics retailer that has its headquarters in Richfield, Minnesota. Originally, the company began in 1966, but is kept up with the changing electronics over time and is now become the place to find the latest in consumer electronics; especially those priced and marketed for middle-class households. At last count in February 2018, Best Buy employed over 125,000 people. There are various employment opportunities at Best Buy, including installer jobs, technician jobs, computer repair positions, A/V experts, store leadership, Accounts Receivable, sales associates, administrative assistants, mobile masters (particularly for Apple products), and loss prevention just to name a few.

Best Buy began on August 28, 1966, when Richard M. Schulze, along with a business partner, opened an electronic store that specialized in hi-fi stereos in St. Paul, Minnesota. Schulze had started the company with his personal savings as well as a loan that he secured with a second mortgage on his house. Sound of Music, which was the name of that first store, earned more than $1 million in revenue the first year. The profit margin was small, but in 1969, Schulze bought his business partner out and took the company public. Today the company specializes in midrange consumer electronics including televisions, mobile phones, tablets, smart home systems, laptops, desktops, and more.

As of 2016, Best Buy had over 1000 stores located across the United States and in some parts of the world. Best Buy had entered the European market, but left in 2013. The only international stores that they have right now are in Canada and Mexico. In 2017, Best Buy reported revenue of $43.17 billion with revenue per share at $150.19. They also showed quarterly revenue growth of 4.9 percent.

Guide to choosing furniture for the “workplace” – Guides on DTF

Simple and clear

This guide is based on the author’s personal experience as a seller of ergonomic office furniture and accessories.
All images and text are purely artistic and entertaining, and are not intended to offend or humiliate anyone. The information is presented purely for informational and entertainment purposes.
There is no and cannot be explicit or hidden advertising (anti-advertising) in this guide.
The author is not responsible for your choices in this guide. The author is not responsible for your actions and does not encourage you to take any action.

The guide is written completely without negativity!

In this guide I will tell you how to choose the most comfortable chair, table for yourself, and about the benefits of some related accessories. And also a few words about how to properly organize your workplace, so that it is straight – for fun. I will point out to you what points you should pay attention to when choosing certain things. In simple and clear words.

But the topic is so huge that it is simply impossible to collect all the information in one post. So consider this one a “pilot” and if it comes in, I will post more.

Examples of universal “ideal” jobs will not be given here. Because these do not exist. All furniture and other accessories must be selected personally by you! According to your parameters, needs, premises and your other personal criteria. And only when you yourself understand what you need, based on your own needs, then you can create your own “ideal” workplace.

DO NOT BUY FURNITURE UNTIL YOU TEST IT LIVE!

Before you buy, be sure to go to different stores and sit in different chairs, look at different tables, twist different accessories. Read reviews about the quality of product materials, etc. You are not buying an NFT picture, but a physical thing that you will use in the real world.

Before proceeding with the selection of furniture, I want to focus on important things – Ergonomics and health.

A few words about ergonomics in your own words

Ergonomics is when the furniture “repeats” the shape of your body, and when you use it for a long time, it does not cause you much discomfort.

Doctors and various experts recommend sitting – something like this:

I honestly stole the picture from this excellent post on Habré, I recommend reading it. Aries

By and large, everything is ok here. But there are comments. It is better that the elbows are on the table or use the armrests. You can put a headrest under your head, then when you work, your neck will become less numb. But this is purely personal, it may not be convenient for someone with a headrest, the armrests can interfere with someone, see for yourself. Also, do not forget that you should not “hunch over” and hang over the table, you should sit straight, or lean back a little to relax your back. But staying in such a comfortable position for a long time will most likely not be pleasant. Sooner or later, something will hurt. Let’s talk about the dangers of long work while sitting a little lower

If something is already seriously bothering you, go to the doctor! Don’t pull! The sooner you find a problem, the easier it will be to fix it.

Let’s talk about health

You yourself know where

is from

Many people still do not know that working sitting, motionless, for a long time, in an uncomfortable chair is very bad for human health.

Sitting for a long time without moving causes:

  • fatigue
  • Slow circulation
  • Heart disease
  • Pain in the spine
  • Digestive disorders
  • Efficiency drops
  • Occurrence of stress
  • Occurrence of hemorrhoids

The above, of course, does not appear all together, and not immediately. But obviously no one wants to catch such a jackpot.

Scared? Get up! Gotta move! Engage in physical activity. Exercise in the morning and during breaks at work. And also use “movable” furniture: tables with height adjustment and chairs for active sitting and other accessories to increase physical activity at the workplace.

Table

Original source unknown

First of all, the table should not be small. You should have your hands completely on it during work, games and other activities. So – HANDS ON THE TABLE! In this position, they will not become numb and your shoulders will not get tired, everything is interconnected. Ideally, the angle at the bend of the elbow should be 90°. I consider this to be the most basic minimum. Also, everything you need (even a plate of dumplings) should fit on the table and not interfere with work.

Height of regular tables +/- 75-80cm. This is a standard, good height that suits 90% of users. If problems with height are present, they can be solved by the height of the chair.

The top must be of good quality material and must not sag under your weight. If you write a lot by hand, then I advise you to consider countertops with a smooth surface. On a countertop where the texture is pronounced, it will not be convenient to write.

Height adjustable table

This image is taken from here TehnoTable

Pleasure is not cheap. But later useful! Personally, I think that this is a must-have for those who spend a lot of time at the table. The benefits of them are very difficult to overestimate.

At the present time, when many office workers have switched to remote home, they have become even less active. The hardest thing for all of us on the way to work is getting out of bed. I won’t teach you how to get out of bed, but rather I’ll tell you about the benefits of tables for sitting / standing work.

Trust me, standing up is great! The purpose of these tables is to alternate sitting/standing work. At the same time, by changing your working position, you expose the body to useful physical activity without interrupting work.

Standing helps reduce the risk of hemorrhoids.
Some experts say that standing improves potency – YEP

A picture about the benefits of working while standing Randomly found in these your Internet

The range of tables is now very huge. Some stores can even custom-make your countertop in different sizes, materials, and accessories. Roughly speaking, if you want , you can really find yourself an “ideal” table.

The main thing in lifting tables is that you have enough of its maximum height. If you are a tall person, the maximum table height may not be enough for you to work comfortably. Just look for another model, with other mechanisms that rises higher. There are tables that rise to 1.3m in height, this height should be enough for everyone.

I speak honestly from my experience. I have such tables at work, and for a year of work I lost 5kg . This is pure working while standing! It’s super cool when you come to work as a sluggish vegetable in a half-asleep state, you don’t sit in a chair to chill – but you get up and work. It really helps to cheer up and not feel like shit throughout the day.

Has everyone seen cutout in the center of the table for the torso? It is especially common at gaming tables. It’s not just done! Actually it’s very correct observance of ergonomics . With such a cutout, you can drive your body as close as possible to the table and your elbows will always be on the surface of the table. But not everyone can fit cutout of this size, it is already better to order individually according to your dimensions.

Game table Forsage-1 wenge

What to look for when choosing a table:

  • Worktop quality
  • Lift quality
  • Load capacity
  • Stability
  • Setting range (height-width)
  • Control panel
  • Possibility to organize wires under the table
  • Warranty conditions
  • Can be disassembled and reassembled multiple times

Active seating chair

Office stool Chair Meister Cloud

This miracle invention is actively gaining popularity. Its meaning is that you are sitting and moving at the same time . Yes, that’s right. The seat itself can tilt in any direction, and sitting on it you can move. With all this, do not even break away from writing another comment on DTF, well, or from working at the computer.
Thanks to this wonder:

  • Back muscles work
  • No numbness in the lower back
  • Improves posture
  • Promotes weight loss
  • Prevents joint diseases

is perfect for those who constantly sit and kick their legs, toss and turn and show other activity in a regular chair. Funny thing , I recommend everyone to evaluate.

The most common “fitball” was taken as the basis. Some have probably even heard that someone is sitting at the table on a gymnastic ball. For them, they even came up with special coasters so that the ball does not roll. But the balloon has one big minus – it deflates and is not very reliable in itself. But cheap.

All furniture companies pick up this idea and make their own analogues. Even IKEA has . So now it will not be difficult to find something on the market that you like. Different models have different chips and features. And the choice is solely yours. There is a very wide range in prices, but on average it costs like a good chair.

Armchair

Stole here RaptorAnton

Movement is of course good. But you shouldn’t overdo it either. All the same, the basis of the workplace is a chair. If the benefits of a lift table and a chair for active sitting can be to some extent replaced by regular walks around the office / home or going to the gym. We simply need that chair for comfortable long-term work or a long skating rink in dock 2.

Not a single self-respecting PC boyars, IT specialist, gamer, office worker and anyone else who sits at a computer desk can do without a good chair. If you do not have a chair and you are sitting on a stool or a simple chair, then first of all you need to buy a comfortable chair. And only then continue to upgrade your dungeon.

The main criterion for choosing a chair is comfort. It should be convenient for you! Yes, it’s so banal. We are all different, and everyone should choose a chair for yourself personally loved one. If you sit in a super-druper orthopedic-ergonomic chair and it is not comfortable for you, most likely you do not need it. (Listen to the consultant, maybe he will tell you something interesting) But the super cheap and comfortable chair is also not the best option . Most likely you will not sit for such a cheap chair without consequences for a long time. And in the worst case, you can even harm your health.

The chair must be height adjustable. So that you can choose the height for your table (only if your table itself cannot change the height). Responsible for height adjustment – gas lift. They come in different height adjustments and maximum load. And they only fit certain crosses. Pay attention to the maximum load of the gas lift!

Wheels for chairs are mainly of 2 types – for hard and soft surfaces. For soft ones, these are ordinary plastic wheels. For hard ones – rubberized, silicone, etc. Everything seems to be clear here.

I’ll just tell you HOW NOT to choose a bad chair and what to look for.

Consider the main options for upholstery.

Leather / leatherette

pros:

  • Easy to clean from liquids and other contaminants
  • Presentable appearance
  • Material strength

minuses:

  • sweaty ass
  • Skin may peel off over time
  • Expensive to change
  • If you have a cat or other pet with claws – pess F chair

Fabric

pluses:

  • Ass doesn’t sweat so much
  • Good wear resistance
  • Pleasant material for a long time

cons:

  • Grease, oil, wine and other similar substances are dangerous for the appearance of your chair

Mesh

pluses:

  • Ass does not sweat at all
  • Does not collect dust
  • Absolute ventilation

cons:

  • Easier to tear or ruin than other options
  • If the net is without nylon threads (line) it will stretch over time
  • If the mesh is even a little torn, it is necessary to re-pattern it completely

According to the type of chairs has not been invented yet – for gamers, executives, ergonomic, orthopedic, recliner, etc. All this is by and large marketing fraud to attract a certain audience for a purchase. But stable stereotypes have already entrenched behind them. Of course, we will not consider all types of chairs, but will only touch on the most popular ones.

Pro “Gaming” chairs and seat stiffness

There are a lot of bad things to say about gaming chairs. And there are so many good things to say. They are really comfortable. There are even models with good ergonomics and wide functionality. It will be possible to adjust armrests, backrest angle, cushions, etc. So to speak – to organize a gaming throne.

The main distinguishing feature of a gaming chair is its shape. It looks like a racing car seat, and it makes sense. This form, as it were, “hugs” you and a unique feeling of comfort and coziness will come. It helps to relax and unwind in space, to find peace, tranquility and this harmony from merging with the infinite-eternal … And in motorsport, the same chairs are made so that you do not fly away from the chair itself when you give an angle under the background on a wheelbarrow.

All the gaming chairs I sat in were soft. For some this will be a plus, for others a minus. Here is someone who likes it more. The “type” of foam rubber strongly affects the rigidity of the seat. One material will settle over time and nothing will remain of the seat, while the other will keep its shape all the time. It’s hard to say which one is better, it’s better to read the reviews of those who have already used this chair. But keep in mind that reviews can be written like a slender girl weighing 45kg and saying that the foam rubber is hard like a log, and a gigachad weighing 150kg who will say that the foam rubber is very soft and when it sits on the fifth point bolts from the mechanism rest against it.

In fact, these chairs make you want to relax more than work. For convenience, they are positioned closer to sofas than to work furniture. If you need a chair just to chill in the evening, play games, drink beer or just spend a short time (up to 3-4 hours) sitting, this is a great option. If you work for almost a day without getting up, ergonomic chairs will save you.

Pro Ergonomic chairs and rockers

Herman Miller Aeron With Graphite0003

In appearance, these can be the most ordinary chairs. But the whole point is in their adjustments and the functions that they have.

The main distinguishing feature is the complete observance of body ergonomics. The back, seat and sometimes even the armrests follow the shape of the human body. In most of these chairs, each part of it is adjustable, which allows you to customize the chair as conveniently as possible.

Lumbar curve. It should not press or cause discomfort. It should support your lower back. The lumbar support can be implemented in various ways. It must be adjustable in height, and even better, in rigidity. Thanks to this functionality, your back will thank you!

There are different rocking mechanisms. Topgun, multiblock, synchro multiblock, etc. I won’t talk about them in detail, it’s very long and tedious. So there is no better or worse, everything is again at your discretion. It all depends on the features you want. You can find a bunch of individual analyzes and articles of all mechanisms and get acquainted in more detail. I will only say one thing – in a good chair, the back should be fixed in several positions. IMHO – it is better to adjust the rocking stiffness yourself , there are chairs where it is automatically adjusted to the weight of a person, this may not always be convenient. If the back swings hard, your back will hurt stupidly from the load.

Get ready to give away a lot of money. A good ergonomic chair can be found in the region of $400-600. But be sure you do not buy it for one year, it will serve you for a very long time. And also will bring minimal harm to your health from a sedentary lifestyle.

After a couple of days of using this chair, you will feel the difference.

Pro “Simple” chairs, plastic and iron

Bureaucrat “CH-695N/BLACK”

The most simple, ordinary chairs, without any functionality and settings for themselves. Some models may have minimal ergonomics. They are also comfortable, but not designed for long periods of sitting. Already after 3 hours spent in such a chair, you will most likely begin to feel discomfort.

I recommend taking chairs where stands, plastic cross . By itself, plastic will make less noise and in most cases even stronger than iron crosses. Only in expensive armchairs can you find a “quiet” iron cross. But if the appearance is important to you, then the iron cross without a doubt looks prettier, although the taste and color, as they say…

What to look for when choosing a chair:

  • Convenience
  • Material quality
  • Build Quality
  • Swing quality
  • Castor quality
  • Maximum loads
  • Ergonomics
  • Possible (required) functionality

Accessories

Footrest is used when you are sitting at a comfortable height for working at your desk and your feet do not fully reach the floor. There are still such supports that you can use on an outstretched leg to sit on the floor lying down. The need for such an accessory decide for yourself. Personally, at home I put my legs on the pipe from the battery, it’s very convenient

The Monitor Arms free up a gigantic amount of desk space. I also think that this is a must-have for everyone. Super useful and handy item. The main thing before buying is to check which brackets your monitor supports and whether it supports at all. Also pay attention to what maximum load the bracket can withstand.

Window and light

You must have a window. I hope you don’t live in a basement or attic. It is always better to place the workplace near a light source. Daylight is your best friend for the eyes. Don’t sit in the dark! It’s super bad for the eyes. No light bulb can replace natural daylight. If it’s dark or it’s suddenly night, it’s better to use daylight bulbs (yellow), it doesn’t burden your eyes as much as cold (white) light. In general, it would be worth delving into the analysis of which light bulbs are good, but that’s another story.

I recommend installing a program to suppress blue light in the monitor. I personally can’t live without it anymore, I use it – f.lux

If you suddenly feel stuffy, you can always open the window and ventilate the room. Fresh air is always good, don’t sit long with stale air. Just watch carefully when you ventilate, do not catch a cold.

In conclusion, a few words

It is unrealistic to take everything into account in this guide and, accordingly, I did not succeed. I just tried to consider the most popular questions today.

If it works, I will make the second part where I will tell you about unpopular things in this case, as well as answer the most frequent objections and suggestions that I encounter in the comments.

I would be glad to read other opinions in the comments and exchange experience using. It is very interesting to read what kind of furniture you use. Feel free to write what you think is wrong – as described in the article.

If suddenly my “guide” helped someone, I will be very happy about it. And if anyone else needs my advice on choosing furniture – I will be glad to help free of charge, write in a personal.

Do you have an idea to write a big long read “Gaming chair smashing”, or something else, what do you think?

I’m sorry for the shakality of some of the photographs, but I couldn’t find better quality.

This is my first big post and I really enjoyed writing it. So I will be glad to his criticism.

Thank you very much for your attention! I hope you enjoyed reading and learned something new and useful for yourself.

Good health everyone, take care of yourself!

Hybrid offices are the future — Bercut on vc.ru

Try to mentally imagine a typical office of a modern IT company. Most likely, you thought about a large open space without walls with rare columns. This space is occupied by rows of computer desks, standing close or close to each other. At best, individual workplaces are separated by small partitions. In some places, these rows are interspersed with islands of greenery, tables with office equipment, coolers and coffee machines and other traditional “inhabitants” of the workspace. All this is a characteristic description of a typical open-plan office, the so-called “open space”. This is a classic standard for organizing corporate space in large organizations with a large number of employees.

Until recently, the concept of an open workspace was the best form of office organization. It was believed that “open space” not only likes employees, but also contributes to the free creative exchange of ideas. However, recent scientific studies have shown that this is far from the case. It turned out that the benefits of “open space” were greatly exaggerated.

In 2020, most IT companies around the world had to switch to a completely opposite mode of work – “remote”. However, this form of work is also not suitable for everyone.

Is there an alternative that is somewhere in the middle between these two poles: on the one hand, the constant work of all employees side by side with colleagues in a large noisy office, on the other hand, a working day spent in a cozy atmosphere in the company of their beloved cat for home computer? It turned out that there is such a solution – this is the concept of a hybrid office that is gaining popularity.

Open floor plan as seen by companies

The idea of a shared workspace is far from new. Remember, at least, the layout of the statistical organization in which the famous characters of the Soviet feature film “Office Romance” worked. What is not “openspace” version 1977 years old?

Of course, large open spaces have existed since time immemorial. But the mass construction of such premises without partitions became possible after the invention of reinforced concrete – architects were able to create huge open office spaces without a large number of load-bearing walls. Large companies immediately jumped at this opportunity. At first, the cabinets were replaced by large spaces, divided into individual compartments-cubes with low plasterboard walls. Partitions of individual cubes gradually decreased, and soon disappeared altogether – now they are rarely seen in the office.

The classic standard is a completely open space in which the desks of employees are close to each other. Until recently, the open office layout was used in most high-tech IT companies, such as Google, Facebook, Pixar.

Why is this principle of workspace organization so good, why has it become the most common? The most commonly cited benefits of an open floor plan are:

  • it encourages creative communication, exchange of ideas and collaboration;
  • such a layout saves the working space of the office – more workers can be placed on the same area;
  • open office is cheaper to build and maintain.

At first glance, many advantages.

Open floor plan as seen by employees

However, the opinions of employees themselves about working in an open office space are far from unambiguous. For example, the possibility of constant free communication with colleagues usually appeals more to extroverted employees. At the same time, introvert employees are very keenly aware of all the inevitable irritants of a large office: conversations and movements of colleagues, noise from office equipment, drafts and extraneous odors.

Let’s imagine how an extrovert feels in an open office. He likes that you can exchange a few words with colleagues at any time. If a lively dispute arises at the other end of the office over work or any other issues, he will definitely take an active part in it – you can start with a loud remark right from your workplace. You can also discuss operating systems, programming languages, film industry news and all sorts of other interesting things with colleagues. During the day, you can constantly drink coffee together, eat donuts and just chat with colleagues. An extrovert in an open office usually feels great – this is his native element: communication, contacts, conversations, exchange of opinions.

Now let’s think about how an introvert feels in an open office. Imagine that you are preparing for an important exam at a noisy metropolitan train station. Conversations, announcements, extraneous sounds are heard from all sides. Someone constantly passes or runs past you, something passes by. It’s good that it doesn’t fly! You re-read the same line for the twentieth time and try to understand its meaning, but you fail – your head is torn from constant external stimuli. The only way out is headphones with good noise absorption. They help to remove at least some of the external interference (at the same time, others, for sure, consider you a real music lover). After a day at work, you feel squeezed like a lemon and often return home with a headache.

This does not mean that introverts do not want to communicate with colleagues. It’s just that introverts prefer calm, thoughtful, pre-planned discussions of work issues. They have no equal in deep analysis and research of complex problems. In addition, introverts prefer to communicate in a personal conversation with several interlocutors, rather than in a large group meeting – this way they can communicate their thoughts and ideas more efficiently and quickly.

Of course, we are all different. Introverts and extroverts perceive and process information differently and, accordingly, can more effectively solve tasks that are better suited to their personality type. Also, for example, in a game raid of some online game, different characters are needed: in some situations, a magician is useful, in others, a warrior. Modern research shows that with the right organization of interpersonal interaction, introverts and extroverts make up strong and effective teams. In addition, according to the results of some experiments, most people in the world are the so-called “ambiverts”, which are somewhere in the middle between introverts and extroverts. Depending on the mood and circumstances, they approach either one pole or the other.

Open floor plan as seen by scientists

In any case, even if we ignore the psychological characteristics of employees, modern science calls into question the effectiveness of open planning. Here is what Paul Kidwell writes about this in his book The Psychology of the City:

According to the polls, open floor plans are not favored unless there is a place for concentrated work where nothing is distracting. Youngsu Kim and Richard de Diar of the University of Sydney’s Department of Architecture found that office space is the most preferred office space among workers. It’s a choice between interaction and personal space, and the balance is tilted in favor of the latter: the absence of visual and noise stimuli is more important than the convenience of communication. The inability to control social contacts and constant distractions cause stress, as a result – overexcitation and a decrease in the ability to focus on current tasks. In addition, several studies have found that open-plan offices are less likely to interact with employees, as talking distracts colleagues. It turns out that such a layout is undesirable, whatever one may say.

Susan Cain’s book Introverts. How to Use Your Character Traits tells about a study conducted by Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister. It was called very unusual and intriguing – “Military maneuvers of programmers.” Susan Cain writes:

The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of the best and worst computer programmers. More than six hundred developers from ninety-two countries took part in the study. Each programmer was given the task of writing and testing a computer program during their working hours at a regular workplace. In addition, each participant in the experiment had a partner from the same company. However, the partners worked alone, without maintaining any contacts – it was this condition of the experiment that turned out to be extremely important.

The scientists obtained the following results:

  • The ratio of the effectiveness of the best employees to the effectiveness of the worst was 10:1. This is a huge gap.
  • The best programmers showed results 2.5 times higher than the results of average programmers.
  • The result of the assignment was not affected in any way by work experience and the amount of time spent.
  • Programmers from the same company coped with the task at about the same level, even if they did not work together.

Researchers began to understand what was the main factor that influenced the results. In the end, they came to a surprising conclusion:

The reason was that the top-performing developers were mostly employed by companies that provided their employees with privacy, privacy, control over physical working conditions, and shielded themselves from outside interference. Sixty-two percent of the top performing developers reported having an acceptable level of privacy in their workplace, compared to 19the percentage of developers who performed the worst. Seventy-six percent of the worst-performing programmers, and only 38 percent of those who performed at the highest level, reported that other people frequently interrupted their work unnecessarily.

Other later studies also confirmed these findings. Here are the main findings from Susan Cain’s book:

  • Companies that use open-plan office space experience higher levels of employee turnover.
  • In such offices, people are more likely to act hostile; they have no motivation and they don’t feel safe.
  • People who work in open-plan offices are more likely to have high blood pressure; they are more prone to stress and get sick more often.
  • They are also more likely to argue with colleagues.
  • Employees are less likely to engage in personal and confidential conversations with colleagues.
  • People stop communicating with each other, quickly fall into a state of anger, become aggressive and are in no hurry to help others.
  • It turns out that the concept of an open office layout does not contribute to the productive exchange of creative ideas, moreover, it hinders it.

    Opposite pole – remote work

In 2020, a new forced trend appeared in our lives — remote work. If earlier this form of work was rather an exception to the rule, now more and more large companies are partially or completely switching to this form of organizing the work of employees. Again, like open space, remote work is not a new invention. Recall another wonderful Soviet film – “Pokrovsky Gates”. Agree, its main characters Lev Evgenievich and Margarita Pavlovna Khobotov obviously worked remotely.

With the transition to remote work, introverts breathed a sigh of relief – finally, they can work in peace and quiet. At the same time, extroverts began to create applications that mimic the noise of a large office. But again, everything is not so clear. Introverts are not at all recluses who want to spend 24 hours in four walls. Even the most inveterate introvert sometimes has a desire to take a laptop and work in some cozy cafe. As Arkady Velyurov from the already mentioned “Pokrovsky Gates” said: “It’s vague and painful, I want to be among people.” Extroverts also sometimes need privacy – if you have a deadline and urgently need to finish a project, then colleagues pestering with empty talk are completely inopportune.

Also, do not forget that the conditions for remote work are different for everyone. Someone at home has his own separate study with a panoramic view of, say, the Mediterranean Sea. And someone at home completely lacks the conditions for productive work and all sorts of annoying and distracting factors even more than in any “open space”.

Remote work is the exact opposite of permanent office work. This is the other extreme in the organization of the workflow. And, like any extreme, it also suits far from everyone.

    Golden mean – hybrid office

How to find a solution that suits everyone – from the company’s management, and introverted employees, and extroverted employees? It turned out that there is a solution – a “hybrid office”. This is a new concept of organizing the work of the company. In fact, this is an “office on demand”, in which managers agree with employees on the application of the most effective model of work – remotely or in the office. Someone constantly works remotely and appears in the office a couple of times a year only for important events. Someone comes to the office several days a week. Someone works in the office all the time. It all depends on the specifics of the employee’s official duties, agreements with the management and his personal wishes. But in the workspace there are now almost no places assigned to a specific employee. To work in the office, you need to book a workplace in advance in a special online system. The same system will make sure that this place is reserved for the employee throughout the working day. It is somewhat similar to a computer club or computer places in a library. True, a hybrid office is much more convenient – for example, it provides boxes for storing personal belongings of employees who often visit the office.

The same booking system is used for meetings. If you need to organize a meeting of the working group, the leader pre-books a meeting room. The concept of a hybrid office implies a certain flexibility – if necessary, meeting space can be expanded or a new temporary space can be organized. It all depends on the needs and requests of the company’s employees. Of course, the hybrid office has retained some features of the “open space” – there is still a large open space with jobs. But now each employee can choose the balance between working in the office and remotely. It is also important that over time this balance can be changed if necessary.

Also, do not think that a hybrid office can interfere with teamwork. After all, the experience of working remotely showed very well that modern means of communication not only do not interfere, but in most cases help to establish effective interaction both within teams and between different teams.

In the spring of 2020, Bercut, like many other IT companies, was forced to transfer all employees to a remote work mode. But instead of waiting for the end of the pandemic to return to the old office mode, the company’s management decided to change the very concept of office space. In the fall of 2020, the company moved to a modern office of a new format – Bercut Gnezdo Point. Now her workspace is organized in accordance with the concept of a hybrid office.

Bercut employees still work remotely, but the high-tech stylish office is ready and waiting for its employees in a new low-rise business center near the Gulf of Finland. We have yet to evaluate all its advantages and get to know the new office format in practice when the epidemiological situation allows it. But it is already clear that the concept of a hybrid office will allow everyone to work more efficiently. According to the results of a survey conducted in the company, there are those who dream of the day when they can come to the office, while others have fully mastered the format of remote work. However, the option of visiting the office only two or three days a week suits the majority of employees. A hybrid office allows you to meet the needs of all employees.

    Future in a new reality

Bercut CEO Andrey Bogdanov at one of the internal CEO Connect (an online meeting where each employee can personally ask the CEO a question) said that the world is rapidly changing and IT companies must change with it. The transition to a hybrid office format is, perhaps, one of the important directions of these changes. After all, the environment in which employees spend their working day directly affects the efficiency of their work and the quality of systems and solutions produced by the company.
