Shakira – A Colombian Singer and Songwriter

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, born in Barranquilla, Colombia on the 2nd of February 1977, is a singer, songwriter, and dancer who emerged into the Latin American music scene in the early 1990s and has since become the number one top-selling Latin artist of all time.

Shakira, as she is known, has achieved international success and fame with her unique music and original dance style. Encouraged by her father, Shakira began writing at a very early age. At age four, she had already written her first poem. Later that year, Shakira and her father were dining at a Middle Eastern restaurant when she enthusiastically joined a group of belly dancers who were performing that night.

Her impressive belly-dancing performance, which would later become her signature dance move, was rewarded with applause. It was then that Shakira knew she wanted to become a performer. At the age of seven, Shakira received a typewriter which she used to write poems that would later evolve into songs.

Young Shakira enjoyed singing and performing to anyone who would pay attention, undeterred by the fact that she had been rejected from the school choir by a music teacher who said that her overpowering vibrato made her sound like a goat. (Vibrato in singing, this term is used to describe a vibration in the pitch. Opera singers are often characterized by this).Shakira performed at various events between the ages of ten and thirteen and caught the attention of Monica Ariza, a local theater producer. A stroke of good luck would place Ariza on the same flight as Sony Colombia Executive, Ciro Vargas, whom Ariza would convince to hold an audition for the Colombian singer in a hotel lobby.

Vargas, impressed by Shakira’s talent, tricked his fellow Sony executives into giving her an in-person audition by telling them that they would be seeing someone else. Shakira performed three songs for them and the result was a three album record deal. Magia, Shakira’s first album, was hardly a success. Recorded and released in 1991, when the Colombian singer was only fourteen years old, the album fared well on Colombian radio but only sold 1,200 copies. Shakira returned to the studio shortly after and recorded Peligro, which came out in 1993.

The album was considered another commercial failure, although Shakira began to build a loyal following.Shakira appeared in Chile’s Viña del Mar International Song Festival in February of 1993. Ricky Martin, one of the judges, voted for her performance and she came third in the competition giving her positive exposure outside of her native Colombia. After taking a hiatus to finish high school, Shakira returned to the studio to make her third album, Pies Descalzos, which debuted in 1995. Hit singles such as “Estoy Aquí,” “Pies Descalzos”, “Sueños Blancos” and “Dónde Estás Corazón”, propelled Shakira to stardom in Latin America. The album sold over 4 million copies and a later remix of the same album sold 500,000 more.

Pies Descalzos led to Shakira’s first international tour and a year later the artist received three Billboard Latin Music Awards for Album of the Year, Video of the Year for “Estoy Aquí”, and Best New Artist. Teaming up with renowned producer Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan’s husband, Shakira released her fourth album ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones? which won her fans in non-Spanish speaking countries. Her growing popularity was solidified when Shakira performed on the first Spanish language version of “MTV Unplugged.”

The live performance was released on CD, earning the Colombian dancer her first Grammy Award. At the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, she was named favorite international artist.Shakira crossed-over into the English market with the release of Laundry Service, which yielded the hit single “Whenever Wherever” and sold over 13 million copies worldwide. Four years later, the Colombian songwriter released a double album project: Fijación Oral Vol. 1, in Spanish, and Oral Fixation Vol. 2, in English. Both albums reinforced her success. Fijación Oral Vol. 1 won her a slew of awards and the single: “La Tortura”, featuring Alejandro Sanz, became an international hit. Oral Fixation Vol. 2 was very well received and delivered the most successful song of the 21st century to date: “Hips Don’t Lie”.

In 2009 Shakira released “She Wolf”, which became an instant success occupying the #1 spot in 18 countries. The Colombian singer also created the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup called: “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” and the Spanish version titled: “Waka Waka (Esto es África)”, which became worldwide hits.Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist and the second most successful Latin American singer of all time.

The singer has won many awards and is also the only artist from South America to have reached the number one spot on the US Hot 100 Billboard, the Australia ARIA chart and the UK Singles Chart. In 2008, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Walk of Fame Committee elected Shakira to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Shakira – Shakira | Colombia

Her full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll… She was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. Her father – William Mebarak (William Mebarak – Colombian, Arab by birth) and mother – Colombian Nidia Ripoll (Nidia Ripoll) decided to baptize their daughter under the name Shakira (Shakira). Translated from Arabic, her name means “Woman overflowing with grace”, and in Hindi – “Goddess of Light”.

Shakira grew up surrounded by books, gems and musical rhythms. Her father was not only a writer, but also owned a jewelry store in Barranquilla. Shaky soon developed an interest in music and literature. When she was three years old, she could read and write, at four she was ready to go to school. The following year, special exams were held, and experts said that Shakira was an unusual child (Wundr Kind).

At first, the mother thought that her daughter would become an artist, as she drew a lot, or a writer, because at the age of four she composed poetry. At school, she was predicted the future of a ballet star or just modern dance, as she often danced belly dance in front of her classmates. Only at the age of eight, her parents saw a singer in her. At this age, she wrote the song “Your dark glasses” (Tus gafas oscuras) under the influence of Don William’s optics.
Shakira was not only talented, but also very beautiful, she won the “Child of the Atlantic” contest. At the age of ten, Shaka’s parents turned into her impresario, they began to invite her to dance oriental dances. Then her parents insisted on her participation in the Long Live the Children! competition, and she won. Since then, she has won all the prizes at competitions in Barranquilla.

A few years later, the journalist Monica Arias introduced her to the official Ciro Vargas from Sonic Music. Shakira sang to him in the lobby of the El Prado Hotel, and he was so amazed by what he heard that he immediately signed a contract with her. From that moment on, she combined her studies and childhood fun with the recording of her first album, Magic (Magia).

She studied at the Ensenyanza del Barriloche, and although she was a college actress, she was not allowed into the choir. One of the teachers said that her voice was like the lowing of a goat. It was a hard blow for Shakira. At the age of thirteen, she experienced the first joys and sorrows of love. It was the neighbor boy Oscar Wola, to whom she revealed her cherished dream of becoming a professional singer.

At the age of fourteen, she became the most famous singer in the city, and her name began to sound throughout the country.

During this time, she had the honor of representing Colombia at the Vina del Mar festival, where she won the Silver Torch (Antorcha de Plata) with her self-composed song “ERES” (to be, in the sense of being who something, something). There she met Ricky Martin, who was on the jury and voted for her. Later, in an interview, the Puerto Rican admitted that he had never seen such a gifted girl.

At fifteen, Shakira recorded her second album DANGER (Peligro). But only one song from this album was successful – as a whole, the album failed. At the request of Shakira herself, the advertising campaign was discontinued, and she decided to focus on a new album that would better reflect her inner state and life credo.

Hard times have come for the singer – the contract was signed for 3 years – if the third disk failed, then her entire singing career would end. It seemed impossible to achieve high sales by performing ballads, and she was offered to sing beach music, but she did not change the genre and continued to sing pop rock.

After graduation, she decides to move to Bogota, but the fear of leaving her city, her friends, her fiancé prevented her. Many journalists convinced her that only in the capital one could achieve the desired success, and as the crisis in her music dragged on, she gave up, packed her bags, took her mother and went to Bogotá.

First of all, upon arriving in the capital, she went to the Sony Music office and TV Guia magazine. After an interview with this magazine, she received an offer from the CENPRO channel to star in the series El oasis (Oasis).

At the same time, the magazine was planning to hold a competition for the title of Miss Colombian Television, and Shakira was included in the list of contenders. The magazine made a special photo for this – a session with Shakira, photos that showed the whole world all the charm and perfect curves of her body. After that, her popularity skyrocketed. At the end of the year, summing up, the magazine named her Miss TV Colombia, as well as the best actress of the year.

During this time, she lived a luxurious life in luxurious apartments in the north of Bogota. She was in love with Oscar Wall, who moved from Baranquilla to Bogota on purpose, but, as happens in such cases, love quickly passed.

In 1994, Shakira performed for the first time in front of a high audience, including journalists, critics, stage and film stars. It happened at the awarding of prizes to the best TV series and programs. Here she was noticed by Parecia Tellez, her future manager. The Sony company was about to terminate the contract with Shakira, but at the last moment someone suggested that she include her song in the collection. In a taxi on the way from home to the company, she wrote the song “DONDE ESTAS CORAZON?” (Where are you heart?). Everyone liked the song. From that moment on, her popularity did not know the sunset.

Work on the third album “Pies descalzos, suenos blancos” (Bare feet, high dreams) Shakira began in the US with producer Luis Fernando Ochoa (Luis Fernando Ochoa). The album was modestly presented on October 6, 1995 at the National Theater of La Castellana. But he was waiting for a huge success – the discs were sold like hot cakes. Although some, such as Luis Fernando Ochoa, later stated that the entire album was ripped off from The Pretenders and other English-speaking bands.
The world tour followed immediately: Shakira visited all the countries of the continent, and everywhere her disc took first place in the charts. Barranquilla and Bogota were no longer her home – she lived in airplanes. At this time, she fell in love with Gustavo Gordillo, a former member of the rock group POLIGAMIA. The connection lasted only 5 months – the employment of both prevented the development of relations.

The same year she opened the Viña del Mar festival. She sold over a million copies – an unprecedented event for Colombia. Especially for Shakira, a new prize was invented – the Diamond Prism (El Prisma de Diamante) – for outstanding achievements in the field of show business. The presentation ceremony took place with special glamor and with a large crowd of journalists. Here Shakira met Osvaldo Rios.

Several million of her CDs have been sold worldwide. She broke all records and could have won the prize as the most awarded international star. Steven Spielberg invited her to audition for the female lead in Zorro. She did not fit, but the very fact of the invitation meant a lot.

Her fame was overshadowed by the death of several people as a result of a crush that arose during the speculation of tickets for her first big concert on her native land in Barranquilla. She cannot remember this event without a shudder. She found out about the incident only after returning to the hotel after the concert. As she assures, if she knew about it earlier, the concert would have been cancelled. This tragedy affected her so much that at some point she wanted to quit her musical career.

In 1996, the singer was voted Woman of the Year and Man of the Year by the Colombian media. And this was not an exaggeration – she became the first Colombian performer who managed to conquer such distant countries as Japan and drive Brazilians crazy with her songs (several discs were even recorded in Portuguese). In the Iberian Peninsula, the success was no less grandiose. Shakira’s songs sounded everywhere – on the streets and in houses.

In 1997, Shakira’s admirers found out about her affair with actor Oswald Rios, who was filming at that time in a Colombian TV series. The lovers did not show their feelings in public, but everyone knew about their relationship. They appeared together at the Billboard and Lo Nuestro (Ours) awards. Osvaldo accompanied the singer on a tour of Brazil.

There she gave two dozen concerts, overtaking Enrique Iglesias, Luis Miguel, Alanis Moriset and others in popularity. The tour continued in Europe. And October 10 1997, 2 years after the release of the album “Piez Descalzos”, the final concert of her tour took place in Bogotá. The affair with Osvaldo Rios, which lasted 8 months, had ended by that time.

A difficult period has come in Shakira’s life. The public and the media demanded the release of her 4th album. This worried the singer, because everyone was waiting for a repeat of the success of her third album, and she did not have new songs, since her papers with songs were stolen at the El Dorado airport.

The hype around the singer rose when in Monaco she was awarded the “WORLD MUSIC AWARD” and the President of Colombia appointed her as a Goodwill Ambassador. But most of all she was pleased with the Congo de Oro prize presented at the festival in Barranquilla. At this festival, she sang the song “Te olvido” (I will forget you) along with the great Joe Arroyo (Joy Arroyo) her life dream came true … “It’s like getting a Grammy,” she said.

An endless succession of weeks, days following each other, spent in creative agony did not break Shakira. She continued to write songs and look for a producer. They became Emilio Estefan … She met him at the Lo Nuestro prizes. Shakira doubted that she could cope with the new job, but Estefan convinced her of this. And soon she started recording new songs. At this time, Time magazine (Latin American edition) informed readers about the coming era of new rock, the first representative of which will be Shakira.

The hour that everyone was waiting for came with the release of the album “Donde estan los ladrones?” (Where are the thieves?).

For the first time in the history of Colombia, the presentation took place in Miami. The company spared no expense and gathered journalists from all over the world for the presentation. After the presentation of the disc in Bogota, Shakira cried with happiness – her disc became five times platinum.

Only on the first day, 300,000 copies were sold. All fears of her failure dissipated. She regained the first places of the charts in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, first with the song “Ciega Sordamuda” (Blind, Deaf, Nema), and then with the song “Tu” (You).

The recording of a live version of her songs in the album “UNPLUGGED” and the subsequent broadcast of the concert itself on MTV Latino made Shakira quite famous in the USA, and the Grammy Latino Award formalized this recognition. Apparently, this prompted the singer to the idea of recording an album in English.

At the turn of 2000-2001, she worked on a new album in Miami, her fiance is the son of the President of Argentina – Antonio de la Rua. Many songs bear the imprint of this connection, for example, the famous composition “Wherever-Whenever”. The album was released in the summer of 2001 under the name Laundry Service. Shakira and Antonio were about to get married, but the crisis in Argentina and the resignation of De la Rua (father) pushed back the wedding indefinitely.

At the annual Video Music Awards, the first dedicated to Latin American artists, Shakira was lucky not only to perform at the ceremony itself, but also to receive all five awards for which she was nominated: Best Female Performer, Best Pop Singer, Best Singer in the north of Latin America, the best female singer of the year.

Shakira turned 45: how the singer became popular

Singer Shakira celebrates her 45th birthday on February 2nd. On the same date, but ten years later, her husband, football player Gerard Pique, was born. But Shakira is loved not for a beautiful relationship with an athlete, but for incendiary songs, open character and contribution to the education of children around the world. 5-tv.ru tells how Shakira achieved worldwide recognition.

The beginning of Shakira’s career

Shakira Isabelle Mebarak Ripoll was born in 1977 in the small Colombian town of Barranquilla. From a young age, the girl demonstrated the ability to learn: at the age of one and a half, Shakira knew the alphabet, and at four she knew how to write and read. Then the girl wrote her first poem. Parents were sure that the child was a child prodigy, they imagined how Shakira would become a scientist or a writer. Meanwhile, their daughter was thinking of devoting herself to astronomy or psychology.

At the age of four, a girl heard the sound of an ethnic doomback drum in a restaurant, jumped on the table and started dancing. She improvised and repeated belly dances that her Lebanese grandmother taught her. At home, Shakira sang for relatives and guests, so her parents sent their daughter to the choir at a Catholic school. But after a couple of classes, the choir teacher said that the girl had too strong a vibrato. “She bleats like a goat,” with these words he returned Shakira to his parents. Then the mother and father enrolled their daughter in the belly dancing section and paid for personal vocal lessons. Before graduating from school, Shakira performed on stage in Colombia with songs she composed at home and won prizes in children’s music competitions.

At this time, Shakira met theater producer Monica Ariza, who was delighted with the performance of the young singer. Monica promised to help the girl with connections in the music world and told the producer of the Sony music label about the talent of the Colombian. He listened to only three songs of Shakira and offered her a contract. But the girl was only 13 years old

Shakira’s confession in Colombia

In the same 1991, Shakira released her debut album Magia, which consisted of songs of her composition, recorded in an amateur studio. The album was purchased for broadcast on local radio stations in Colombia, but was not commercially successful.

The same fate befell the second album Peligro (“Danger”), because of which Shakira was in conflict with the producers. Label representatives saw the album differently than Shakira intended it to be. The girl had to make concessions due to the specifics of the contract – she released a release, but refused to promote it. The singer took a break to finish high school and write her third album. Shakira’s wayward behavior did not please the producers, at 19On the 94th, they were on the verge of terminating the contract with the girl. But unexpectedly, the song Donde Estas Corazon became very popular, the artist’s managers postponed her “dismissal”. They gave the girl 100 thousand dollars to record the third album and did not lose: the release of Pies Descalzos (“Bare Feet”) turned out to be so popular that Shakira went on her first world tour. Several publications recognized the artist as “Woman of the Year” and the first Colombian singer whose music was appreciated in other countries – the album sold well even in Japan, which had previously shown no interest in Latin American artists.

An enthusiastic audience was waiting for the singer’s fourth album, Shakira worked hard on recording … But in 1998, the project was under threat: a suitcase with lyrics from the new album was stolen from the singer at the airport. The performer had to speed up the release date, hastily restore records and create songs, until the attackers took advantage of her lyrics. Did the singer herself produce the release of Donde Estan los Ladrones? (“Where are the thieves?”). The disc went platinum five times, and already on the first day, sales reached 300,000 copies. These were incredible numbers for the Colombian singer! For the album, Shakira was first nominated for a Grammy Award at 1999th.

Shakira enters the English-speaking music market

Having received worldwide recognition after a Grammy nomination, Shakira knew that she was on the right track. In 2002, she released the album Laundry Service (“Laundry”), which soared to the top of the American charts. The hit “Whenever, Whenever” was known all over the world!

On the English-language album, Shakira was able to show the world the versatility of her voice, which Colombian producers did not appreciate. She was offered many lucrative contracts in the United States, and Colombian critics scolded her – they say that the singer preferred to make American pop music and abandoned Colombian folk motives.

The artist claimed that she likes to experiment with music and mix different genres, and standing still with a monotonous repertoire will not lead to anything good. Moreover, it was not difficult for the singer to work in different languages: Shakira speaks English, Portuguese, Italian, Catalan, knows a little Arabic and French. She even recorded a Spanish-language album, Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 and released its English “translation” Oral Fixation Vol. 2. The video for the song Hips Don’t Lie has a billion views on YouTube by 2022. Entertainment Weekly magazine dubbed the girl the “golden beauty” for the shining hair and gold-colored dresses that Shakira chose for performances.

With the new album, Shakira went on a world tour. She visited 37 countries and performed 150 concerts, which was an incredible success for 2006. Shakira has received several awards, including Grammy Awards, and has become the most successful Colombian singer in the world. Thanks to global recognition, the singer met Beyoncé, Rihanna, Sia and The Black Eyed Peas, worked with famous DJs, Tiesto, LMFAO and Skrillex. They also produced the singer’s compositions.

By 2022, Shakira has released 11 studio albums and conquered millions of people. Performances at the Super Bowl, Pepsi advertising campaigns and the official anthem of the World Cup… Shakira is called not only one of the most talented and successful singers of the century, but they are also surprised by the image of the Colombian. The girl is a rare guest in the scandalous gossip columns, she performs with pleasure at charity concerts, often meets with fans and visits orphanages.

The fate of children is important to Shakira from an early age. As a child, she went with her father to a park in Barranquilla and saw orphans walking around. Then young Shakira promised herself that as soon as she became famous, she would definitely help the poor. The girl donated the fees from the first performances to charitable foundations. In 2006, Shakira was chosen as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She went on a mission to Bangladesh, where she helped the victims of Cyclone Sidr, distributed first aid kits and warm clothes. After the trip, the singer decided to enter the University of California for a course in the history of Western civilization: so that her intentions would not be known, the singer used the middle name Isabelle Mebarak and asked the rector to hide information about her enrollment. It was very flattering to accept such a student for the university, therefore, during her studies, Shakira was often “let go” on tour and charity trips. The IQ of the artist is 140, so her absence from the lectures did not prevent her from passing the exams.

Shakira created the Pies Descalzos Foundation, which helps children from impoverished families get an education, established the ALAS Foundation for the early development of children in Latin America and persuaded several American financiers to donate funds and asked the American Congress, The World Bank and the UK government focus on the global education of children. After such gestures, critics were ashamed to blame Shakira for forgetting about her native country. The singer still encourages her fans to help residents of third world countries get an education.

Shakira’s personal life

The love of thousands of fans and worldwide success on the music scene – it would seem that in Shakira’s life there is no time for a family. However, in 2000, the singer began dating the Argentine lawyer Antonio de la Rua, who for some time worked as her business manager. The girl was deeply in love and dated Antonio for ten years. To questions about the wedding, she answered that their relationship was reminiscent of a married couple, and she and Antonio did not need papers to prove their love to each other.

In 2010, the press found out that Shakira and Antonio decided to live separately. The singer never spoke about the reasons for the decision, but noted that she used the period of separation for professional growth. The woman wanted to remain friends with her ex-lover, but he was going to sue the singer for $250 million. De la Roi demanded such compensation for the work of a business manager. Of course, after this, there could be no talk of any friendship. The singer filed a response lawsuit and won the court.

The yellow press wrote that one of the reasons for the sudden separation of Shakira and Antonio was football player Gerard Pique, whom the singer met in 2010 on the set of the Waka Waka video. Shakira remained silent and did not talk about her personal life for a whole year. In 2011, she and the football player posted joint photos on Twitter, where they signed each other with “sun”. The network discussed the difference in age between lovers – the handsome Piqué is exactly ten years younger than the singer. But the public reacted favorably to the novel and ruled out the possibility of a PR romance, because Shakira had already become known all over the world, and Pique earned a lot of money playing as a Barcelona defender and the Spanish national football team.

A year later, in 2012, Shakira pleased her fans with the news that she and Pique were expecting a baby. She gave birth to a son, Milan Pique Mebarak, in January 2013, and in 2015, a second son appeared in the family, who was named Sasha. But the boys’ parents never legalized the relationship. In one of the interviews, Shakira told why she still hasn’t married Piquet.
