How to Pick the Best iPad Chargers: Step by Step

There are several things to consider while choosing the best iPad charger. The most important ones include the following:

    Power Output

The wattage or power output determines how fast your iPad charges. Since iPads are known to charge slowly, you need to ensure the charger you choose has at least 10-12 watts of power or higher if you want faster charging speeds.

It is important to note that higher wattage does not always translate to better charging. Also, chargers with high power output cost more than standard chargers. Apple recommends a 20-watt charger for the iPad. Many modern iPad models come with this charger out of the box.

    Port Compatibility

Most newer iPads are now using USB-C cables in place of Lightning cables for charging. Therefore, you need a charger with a USB-C port compatible with your iPad model. If you need to charge multiple devices simultaneously, look for adaptors with multiple ports, like the UGREEN 100W 4-Port Charger, which has four USB ports with a maximum power output of 100 watts.

    Brand Reputation

Apart from Apple, there are different brands producing quality and reliable chargers. Sometimes it may be difficult to tell the best charger, but brands like Anker, Belkin, UGREEN, and Aukey have a reputation for producing quality chargers for multiple devices.

    Safety Features

An iPad is a costly device you will want to protect from any damage. Therefore, investing in a charger with safety and protective features such as intelligent temperature sensors and heat dissipation is important. These features detect the temperature and regulate the power output accordingly.

They also protect your device from overcharging and short circuits, which may damage your iPad. This ensures your iPad charges safely. If you leave your phone to charge overnight, some chargers have an automatic shutoff feature to prevent overcharging.

    Portability

Generally, most chargers are compact and easy to carry on the go. If you travel a lot, look for chargers with foldable plugs and carrying cases to fold them into small packages without affecting their charging capabilities. Also, consider the dimensions and weight. A bulky charger will take up much space and may be difficult to carry in your pockets when traveling.

    Price

Price is a crucial factor to consider when choosing the best iPad charger. Different brands offer different types of chargers at different price points. Some, like Apple’s proprietary charger, are more costly than some of the offerings in the market. The high-end chargers are more durable and have advanced charging capabilities than most budget options. Ensure you pick a charger that fits your need and budget.

What to Know Before Buying an iPad Charger

When buying a charger, you must ensure it is compatible with your iPad model to avoid picking the wrong charger and risking damaging your expensive gadget. Using the wrong charger may also slow the charging process or fail to charge completely.

Also, factor in the cable length, especially if you want to use your iPad as it charges. Longer cables provide convenience and accessibility. You can even reach for your iPad from your bed.

Also, you need to know the charging speed of the charger you are buying, especially if you are replacing the Apple 20-watt charger that comes with the iPad. It will be pointless to purchase another 20-watt charger. In this case, a charger with a higher wattage will suffice.

Be sure to check the warranty provided. This will give you peace of mind that you will get a replacement if anything goes wrong.

Using the Best iPad Charger: What it’s Like

iPads are crucial devices in our daily use. You can take notes, play games, take photos, listen to music, read e-books,  browse the web, access social media, or make calls.

Whether using them for entertainment, school, or professionally, you need a sufficient charge to carry out all those tasks. Having the right charger will ensure you sustain conversations and perform all the necessary tasks without running out of juice.

The right iPad charger ensures your device charges fast and safely, protecting it from overcharging and short-circuiting. If you are replacing your old iPad charger, ensure you get a charger with the right wattage, cable length, portability, safety features, and compatibility with your iPad model.

Ultimately, the best iPad charger will vary depending on your needs and budget.

The 5 Best iPad Chargers: Reviewed and Ranked FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Why do I need a specific charger for my iPad?

iPads require chargers with higher wattage output than standard smartphone chargers to charge at a faster rate. Using a lower-wattage charger can result in slower charging times and may even prevent the iPad from charging altogether.

What should I look for when choosing an iPad charger?

You should look for chargers that have a wattage output of at least 12 watts or higher, as well as ones that are certified by Apple to ensure compatibility. You should also consider the length and durability of the charger cable, as well as any additional features such as multiple ports or fast charging capabilities.

Can I use a third-party charger for my iPad?

It is possible to use a third-party charger for your iPad, but it is important to make sure that it is certified by Apple to ensure compatibility and safety.

What are some safety considerations when using an iPad charger?

Always make sure to use chargers that are certified by Apple to ensure safety and compatibility. Avoid using chargers with frayed cables or other signs of damage, and never use chargers that have been modified or tampered with. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use and storage of the charger.

Can I charge my iPad with a laptop USB port?

Yes, it is possible to charge your iPad with a laptop USB port. However, the charging time will be slower than when using a dedicated wall charger because most laptop USB ports provide lower wattage output than iPad chargers.

It’s also important to note that not all USB ports provide the same level of power output, so the charging speed may vary depending on the specific laptop and USB port being used. If you need to charge your iPad quickly, it is recommended to use a dedicated iPad charger.

What is the difference between a USB-C and USB-A charger?

USB-C chargers are newer and can provide faster charging speeds, as well as support for a wider range of devices. USB-A chargers are older and are typically slower, but are still compatible with many devices. It is important to make sure that your charger is compatible with your specific device.

If your computer only has USB-A ports, you can connect your iPad using a USB-A/USB-C cable. For example, a mophie USB-A to USB-C cable, or one of the many certified USB accessories available in your country or region, will work. The appropriate cable connectors are as follows:

    Connecting to Displays and Monitors

The USB-C port connects iPad to external displays so you can watch videos, Keynote presentations, and more on the big screen. Depending the display you are connecting to may require an adapter.

When an external display is connected, it displays the same as the iPad’s built-in display, except when using a dual-screen application (such as a video application).

    USB-C displays

iPad uses DisplayPort to support connection to USB-C displays 1 with the following resolutions:

    • Up to 4K for iPad Air (4th generation) and iPad mini (6th generation)
    • Up to 5K for 11-inch iPad Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd and 4th generation)
    • Up to 6K for iPad Pro 11″ (3rd generation), iPad Pro 12.9″ (5th generation) and iPad Air (5th generation) with Pro Display XDR

iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) also support Thunderbolt displays.

To connect iPad to high-resolution displays, use a USB-C cable that supports high-speed connections, such as the cable that came with the display, the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C to USB-C) cable, or the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB -C) (sold separately). 2

iPad also supports USB-C High Dynamic Range displays that use the HDR10 standard. To switch between SDR and HDR modes, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and select the connected display. iPad maintains the frame rate and dynamic range of currently playing content when Allow Display Mode Change is enabled.

Some USB-C displays also support charging a connected iPad.

    1. iPad Pro 11″ (1st and 2nd generation), iPad Pro 12.9″ (3rd and 4th generation) and iPad Air (5th generation) support LG UltraFine 5K 2019 Display 4K resolution including video, audio, data and charging. These iPad models do not support Thunderbolt displays such as the 2016 LG UltraFine 5K Display

    2. The Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) cable has a Thunderbolt symbol to distinguish it from a USB-C cable.

    HDMI 9 monitors or TVs0073

Uses a USB-C to HDMI adapter to connect iPad to an HDMI monitor or TV. Adapters that support HDMI 2.0 can provide video from iPad Pro and iPad Air (5th generation) at 4K resolution at 60Hz, and for iPad Air (4th generation) and iPad mini (6th generation) with 4K resolution and 30Hz.

The Apple USB-C Multiport Digital AV Adapter is also compatible with iPad. This adapter can provide video from iPad Pro and iPad Air (5th generation) up to 4K resolution at 60Hz*, and for iPad Air (4th generation) and iPad mini (6th generation) up to 4K and 30Hz.

HDMI can stream Dolby Digital Plus audio from iPad. Dolby Atmos audio streaming is not supported. Playback of HDR10 and Dolby Vision content on iPad via HDMI will be possible when HDMI 2.0 adapters supporting these formats become available.

    * When used with the Apple USB-C Multiport Digital AV Adapter, the Home screen and apps are displayed on HDMI displays in 1080p at 60Hz. The playback uses the resolution of the corresponding content – up to 4K at 60 Hz. Turn on Content Negotiation in Settings > Displays on iPad.

    Audio playback

You can use the built-in speakers, AirPods or other Bluetooth devices, and AirPlay to play audio on iPad. You can also use the USB-C port to connect USB-C docks, displays, audio interfaces, or wired headphones with a USB-C connector.

To play USB-C audio through other speakers or headphones, use the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Adapter (sold separately).

    Connect to other devices

USB-C port allows you to connect various devices to your iPad.* For example, you can connect a digital camera or an Apple USB-C SD card reader adapter to import photos. Other USB devices can also be connected to the iPad, including:

    • external drives;
    • hubs and docking stations;
    • keyboards;
    • audio interfaces and MIDI devices;
    • USB/Ethernet adapters.

    Using the adapter

Depending on the type of device, you may need an adapter to connect. The most common connection options are listed below.

    • If the device you are connecting has a USB-C port, you only need a cable with USB-C connectors on both ends, such as the one that came with your iPad.
    • If your device has a USB-C connector, you can connect it directly to the USB-C port on your iPad Pro.
    • If your device has a USB-A connector, you can connect it to the Apple USB-C to USB adapter and then connect the adapter to the iPad’s USB-C port.

    Thunderbolt and USB4

iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation) also support a rich ecosystem of high-performance Thunderbolt and USB4 accessories. Some accessories connected to iPad may consume more power, resulting in shorter battery life. To conserve battery power, remember to disconnect these accessories from your iPad Pro when not in use. For more information, see the specifications of the accessories provided by their manufacturers.

Using iPad to charge other devices

Don’t have access to an electrical outlet, but need to charge an iPhone, another iPad, Apple Watch, or third-party USB device? Simply connect it to your iPad with the appropriate cable or adapter. Its large capacity battery is enough to charge other devices.

    • To charge an iPhone or earlier iPad with a Lightning port, connect the device to iPad using the Apple USB-C to Lightning cable (1 m). If you have a Lightning to USB cable, you can connect it to the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter and then connect the adapter to your iPad.
    • If you have two iPad models with USB-C ports, you can connect them directly with a USB-C cable. One iPad will be charged from the other. To swap them and charge another iPad, unplug the USB-C cable and plug it back in.
    • To charge your Apple Watch, connect the magnetic charging cable that came with your watch to your iPad using the Apple USB-C to USB adapter. If you have a USB-C cable with magnetic fast charging, you can connect it directly to your iPad.

    * Transfer speeds vary by iPad model and whether it is connected to a computer or other device.

Fast charge your iPhone and iPad with your MacBook Pro charger?

Recommendations for fast charging an iPhone or iPad often include getting an Apple 20W power adapter or a similar third party device. But what if you already have a more powerful USB-C charger from your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air? Find out which iPhones and iPads can be fast-charged with Apple MacBook chargers or similar third-party chargers.

Update 9/30: iPhone 13 Pro Max can consume up to 27W of power, and 30W or higher power adapters will give you the fastest charge. At this point, it’s unclear if the entire iPhone 13 line will be able to max out at 27W, but as detailed below, it doesn’t hurt to use a more powerful outlet, as the iPhone is what determines the power it receives.
