Remote Desktop Windows 10, 8, 7 and XP

Remote Desktop in operating systems of the Windows family is a very powerful tool for remote computer control. Remote Desktop or RDP has been introduced into the Microsoft family of operating systems since the days of Windows NT 4.0. At the moment, the latest version of RDP built into Windows has serial number 10, like the new operating system itself. In this article, we will take a closer look at connecting to a remote machine via the RDP protocol from various operating systems. Also, our readers will learn how to connect to a remote desktop over the Internet.

We connect from various systems via the RDP protocol to a computer with Windows XP

For our example, we took a computer based on the Windows XP operating system. We will connect to it via the RDP protocol from computers running Windows 7, 10 and Ubuntu. In these examples, all RDP connections will be local , that is, within the local network. First, we will look at an example of connecting to Windows 10 . To do this, open the application itself in Windows 10 « Remote Desktop Connection “.

On the General tab, in order to access the XP computer in the Computer column, you must enter the address of the remote PC. In our case, the address is “ “. Next, enter the username “ User ” and the user’s password. The address of the remote XP computer can be found in the network connection settings.

It is also worth adding that before connecting to a remote PC, in the properties of the computer in Windows XP, check the box “ Desktop remote control ” as shown below. This is necessary in order to allow you to connect to it.

The data we enter in the RDP client in Windows 10 will look like this:

If all the data is entered correctly, you can connect using the Connect button. By clicking this button, the RDP client will take us to the password entry window for further access to Windows XP.

After successfully entering the password, Windows XP will allow us to log in.

Let’s go back to the RDP client in Windows 10. On the first tab, we found out that data for a remote machine is entered in it. In the second tab “ Screen ” we can edit the screen resolution values on the remote machine.

The next tab “ Local resources ” allows you to connect resources that are related to your PC (from which you are connecting). For example, you can connect a local disk, DVD-ROM, printer, and other devices.

The Interaction tab provides access to settings for the quality of graphics displayed in the RDP client window.

In the “ Advanced ” tab, the user has the ability to enable and configure the protection of the remote RDP connection.

If you compare clients on Windows 10 and 7, you will hardly find a difference, since they have the same settings. The only minor difference is the slightly improved design in Windows 10. Below is Remote Desktop Windows 7 .

So if you use RDP on a Windows 10 or 7 PC, you won’t notice much of a difference.

Let’s now move on to using Remote Desktop on a computer running Ubuntu . For example, we will use the latest version of Ubuntu with serial number 16.04. On Ubuntu 16.04, the RDP client is named Remmina . Below is a window with an open program. To access a remote PC in Ubuntu, you need to click the Create button in the Remmina top bar.

After this action, a window will appear in which you need to enter the settings of the remote machine from XP.

The image above shows how the settings are entered, similar to Microsoft’s RDP. After entering these settings, we can immediately access Windows XP by clicking the Connect button, which we will do.

The image above shows the desktop of the connected machine. If we exit this session, then in the Remmina window we will see that the settings for accessing our PC have been saved in the program.

This example shows how easy it is to access a remote Windows XP PC on an Ubuntu PC. Please note that when comparing the standard client from Microsoft and Remmina in Ubuntu, you can notice that the latter has a lot more settings and features.

Thanks to these features of Remmina, the Ubuntu operating system has gained great popularity among terminal server users. For example, many organizations use computers running Ubuntu as clients for a terminal server. This is not surprising, because Ubuntu is a free operating system. Ubuntu clients are especially popular when working with server solutions where 1C software products are installed. Using this scheme, many firms save tens of thousands of dollars.

Direct access via RDP over the Internet

In the previous examples, we have considered options for connecting to a remote machine via a local network. Now we will look at the Internet connection option . In order to connect through the protocol in question, you need a white IP.

White IP is the IP address of your computer, which is accessible from any PC connected to the Internet. This address can be provided by your ISP for a fee. It is also worth mentioning the gray IP. The gray IP is the address of the computer that is assigned to internal LANs. If the user has such an IP address, he gets access to the Internet through NAT, Proxy and SOCKS, so there is no direct access to this computer from the outside.

If the remote PC has a white IP, then you can safely drive in this address in the RDP client settings and connect to the remote computer from another PC. This connection will only work if the remote PC is connected directly to the ISP. That is, the provider’s cable is connected to the network card. If the PC is connected via, for example, a Wi-Fi router, then you will not be able to connect. In this case, you need to do port forwarding on the router.

Port forwarding through the router is required to allow outside access to the internal NAT network.

The router creates a local network, to which, for example, a tablet, laptop and desktop computer are connected. Each device is assigned a local IP address in a NAT network. To give direct access via the Internet to a laptop or desktop computer, you need to do port forwarding on the router.

Below we will consider an example of port forwarding on a D-Link DIR-615/K router.

First of all, go to the web interface of the router and go to the page “ Firewall/Virtual Servers “. This is done through the browser. As the page address, specify the address of the administrative page of the router, which is usually indicated on the body of the router itself. The default login and password are usually written there.

This page will allow you to do port forwarding. First of all, click the Add button. After this step, we will get to the following page:

The image above shows the network settings for a remote Windows XP computer. After entering the router parameters, we save the settings and try to connect via the Windows 10 RDP client. It is worth noting that now you need to dial a non-local IP « ” and remote, for example “ “.

Of course, many users with gray IPs will be a little upset because of this situation, but there is a way out. The program LogMeIn Hamachi will come to the aid of such PC users. With this utility, any user can build a virtual secure VPN network. In fact, with the help of LogMeIn Hamachi, you create a local network that is built using VPN technology. By building such a network, you can exchange files, play network games as if you had a real local network. The only limitation for the free version of LogMeIn Hamachi will be the number of users on the network, which is five. For a home network, five users would be a perfectly acceptable option.

>> Download LogMeIn Hamachi

In this article, we reviewed RDP clients from both Microsoft and Ubuntu. In this article, we tried to convey to our readers as simply as possible: how to establish a connection with a remote desktop. We also analyzed in the article what gray and white IP are. Another point that I want to talk about is the new Microsoft Remote Desktop app for Android . Thanks to this application, any user using a smartphone or tablet will be able to connect to a remote PC. The application window is shown below.

And we, in turn, hope that our article will be useful to our readers, and thanks to its content, you can easily connect to a remote desktop.
