Why Do You Need a Home Security Camera for Your Home?

One of the best, and most obvious, reasons to invest in a home security camera is the simple fact that they can help provide peace of mind. If something ever happened, having a home security camera might help you catch important details like a license plate number, for example, which may make it easier for law enforcement to apprehend the suspect.
However, whether or not you need a home security camera for your home depends on the level of security you want.

How Many Security Cameras Will You Need?

The number of security cameras you need depends on the size of your home. At a minimum, it’s recommended that you place a camera at the main entrance of your home. Additionally, having outdoor cameras on all ground floor entrances is custom.
For added security, you can choose to install security cameras in the main hallways or second floors. However, because of privacy and data protection issues, you might skip the bedroom and bathroom.

Types of Security Cameras

Before you start looking for a camera for your home, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the most common varieties.

Video Doorbell Cameras

A popular type of outdoor camera, it replaces your traditional doorbell with one that has a camera inside. Whenever the camera detects motion or when the doorbell is pressed, it starts recording. Some video doorbell cameras feature two-way audio to your smartphone or smart speaker. Video doorbells can also record interactions if you don’t answer the ring to review the footage later. They are usually pretty easy to install, especially for seasoned DIYers. Some require batteries, but in most cases, you can hardwire it right in.

Outdoor Cameras

Outdoor cameras are available in wired and wireless options. They are typically mounted on the house or some other nearby structure. Wired outdoor cameras are hardwired into your home’s electrical system. Wireless ones are not—you typically plug them into a wall or are powered with batteries.

Indoor Cameras

Also available in wired or wireless, indoor cameras are designed for those most concerned with what is going on inside the house when they are not home. Indoor cameras are usually plug-in devices and require WiFi or an internet connection to provide you with remote alerts and live video feeds.

Wireless Cameras

Available for indoor and outdoor use, wireless cameras connect to a WiFi network and store footage in the cloud. These are usually easier to install as they don’t need a cable connection. There are also specialty indoor cameras that dispense treats to your pet or baby cameras that record temperature and air quality.

Floodlight Cameras

These are outdoor cameras with floodlights that turn on when the camera does. This helps them capture clearer video, especially at nighttime. They can also be hardwired to existing lighting wires or be powered by an outlet if they’re wireless.

Factors to Consider When Buying a Home Security Camera

If you’re looking to buy a home surveillance camera, there are a few things you need to consider:

  • Installation: Many home security cameras are easy to install, connect to your WiFi, and set up. However, some cameras, especially those part of larger home security systems, might require professional installation. Before purchasing a home security camera, consider your tech expertise when choosing one.
  • App: Your home security camera should have a user-friendly app to control the camera remotely and get timely notifications. Check the app’s reviews and ratings on iOS or Android before deciding.
  • Durability: If you’re using an outdoor home security camera, it’s important to consider durability. Ensure your camera is designed to withstand temperature changes and severe weather conditions.
  • Connectivity: Check whether your camera requires WiFi and, if so, what type of network. In addition, you also want to check connectivity to other ports and docks. This will determine whether you have the structure to connect your camera.
  • Power: Not all cameras are powered the same way. Some are plugged in, others require batteries, and some might be rechargeable. Outdoor cameras often have solar panels. Figuring out the power option is key as it can mess up your installation.

Important Security Camera Features

Many security camera features can help you keep a safe property. No matter the brand, there are some important security camera features to look out for:

  • Image quality: There’s no point in installing a home security camera if the footage is too grainy or blurry. Look for at least full high-definition (HD) resolution or 1080p. Even better, some cameras offer 2K or 4K resolution.
  • Field of view: Ideally, you want a security camera with a wide-angle lens. Look for a field of view of around 130 degrees to show you left and right and straight ahead. A camera with pan and tilt capabilities might achieve a similar result.
  • Night vision: If you have an outdoor camera without a floodlight, ensure it’s equipped with night vision technology. Night vision in home security cameras can be via infrared REF sensors or color from a bright white spotlight. If night vision is important for you, consider reading about the best night vision cameras available.
  • Two-way audio: Both indoor and outdoor cameras should have built-in speakers and microphones to speak to whoever is looking at the camera. These days, most security cameras come with two-way audio.
  • Storage and recording: Security cameras might have local storage with built-in storage or a micro-SD card. In this case, the footage is stored locally and you’ll need a separate device to review the footage. With cloud video storage, the footage is automatically uploaded onto a cloud server, which you can access via your smartphone.
  • Smart home integration: Voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant can communicate with your home security system. Cameras that integrate with smart home devices can provide greater control over your system.
  • Geofencing: This uses your smartphone’s location so that the camera automatically arms when you leave the house and disarms when you return.
  • Alerts: Security cameras should have a feature to send instant alerts and notifications to your smartphone. Most new security cameras have instant notifications for movement, intruders and if the camera has been disarmed.

Security Camera Installation

Installing home security cameras depends on many things. If it’s a wireless camera, installation primarily includes plopping the camera on a flat surface or screwing it into a wall or ceiling. Then connect it to your WiFi network and complete the setup on a smartphone.
Outdoor cameras might require testing, as you need to ensure they’re installed within your WiFi network.
Wired cameras are more complicated to install. Some cameras only require to be plugged into a power outline. While other cameras require it to be connected to your home’s electrical system. The latter ones usually require professional installation services.
Most home security cameras are designed to be installed without a technician. DIY installation involved following the steps on an app:

  1. Download the security camera app.
  2. Create an account.
  3. Connect the device to a power outlet.
  4. Add the device to the app.
  5. Name the device based on its location.
  6. Add the camera to your home’s WiFi network.
  7. Test the camera motion or person detection system.
  8. Link the camera with compatible devices (optional).

How Much Do Security Cameras Cost?

With so many choices in the home security camera market, pricing varies tremendously based on the equipment and brand. Let’s explore some factors to help you understand security camera pricing.

Upfront vs. Monthly Monitoring Costs

When choosing equipment, most companies give you the option to pay one price upfront or to break it down into a monthly subscription. Security cameras range from $20 to around $400+, depending on the device and the brand.
As you’re considering different options, remember to look for the monitoring prices. DIY home security camera systems are often self-monitored and only require you to purchase the device. However, other cameras require professional monitoring, ranging from $10 to $50.

Security Camera Professional Installation Costs

Most security cameras are DIY, meaning that you install them yourself and don’t spend money on installation costs. However, some security cameras, especially those part of larger home security and alarm systems like ADT or Vivint, require professional installation. On average professional installation costs around $100 to $200.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are wireless security cameras worth it?

Wireless security cameras are easy to install and usually an affordable way to secure and protect your home. They are also less invasive to your home compared to wired cameras. And they’re more flexible than other types of cameras, making them renters-friendly.

How long does a security camera last?

Most home security cameras will last anywhere between five to 10 years, depending on the brand and device.

Do home security cameras record all the time?

Not all home security cameras record footage at all times. Some only record at scheduled times, while others may only start recording when specific alerts are triggered.

What is the difference between a security camera and a surveillance camera?

Surveillance cameras operate on an IP network, connecting the camera from a remote system and transferring video to a secure location. Security cameras, also known as CCTV cameras, transmit signals from a specific area to a monitor.

Can wireless cameras work without the internet?

Yes. Some wireless cameras can work without the Internet, but you won’t be able to access features such as notifications, live video feeds, and others.

Is it better to have wired or wireless security cameras?

Wireless signals don’t extend very far. Most cameras have a range of 300 feet at most. But walls or other blockages can interfere with this range. Wired cameras can provide a more reliable signal and video won’t be susceptible to bandwidth fluctuations.

Best Security Camera Deals for January 2023

One of the best ways to protect and monitor your home, whether you’re there or away, is with a smart home security camera. Wireless surveillance has come a long way, especially from the days when you had to pull wires all across your property to power and receive video to a DVD writer or storage device. Of course, almost everything is wireless nowadays, and with that comes a need to connect to the cloud and get a subscription service, at least if you want to store things online. There are a variety of wireless security cameras to pick from as well as wired models. We’ve collected the best security camera deals you’re going to find on the internet today so that you don’t have to go dredging through dozens of postings. Prices change often, so if you don’t see a deal that works for you, check back often.

Google Nest Cam Battery — $140, was $180

Why buy

  • 130-degree field of view
  • Works both for indoor and outdoor
  • Has free cloud storage worth three hours
  • Facial recognition if you go with a subscription

Nest is a pretty big lineup of cameras, just as the Ring is, and if you’re already integrated into the Google ecosystem, you may be more interested in going with something like this Nest Cam, which is rated for both indoor and outdoor use. That being said, there is a bit of a caveat for outdoor use, as it’s only weather-resistant rather than weatherproof, so you might still want to mount it somewhere that’s relatively covered and not completely out in the elements. Also, the wall mount it comes with is magnetic, which is pretty sturdy, but you can also get a $30 stand if you prefer that.

In terms of image, it’s about what you’d expect for a product coming from Google, as it has 1080p and HDR, so you’re going to be able to see everything that goes on in its 130-degree field of view. It also has two-way audio, which is a nice deterrent feature and a generally nice feature to have if you want to use it indoors with pets or whatnot. Smart alerts are free and well done, and you’ll be happy to note that even if the Wi-Fi goes down, the Nest Cam can record for up to an hour for you to view later.

Speaking of recording video and audio, it’s important to note that you only get the three-hours worth of recording for free. If you want more, you can get the $6/month, which gives you 30 days of recording, or the Nest Aware Plus subscription for $12/month, which gives you 60 days of recording. Regardless of your subscription, you get Google’s facial recognition, which helps cut down on needless alerts as it learns who should and shouldn’t be around your home.

Ring Floodlight Cam Plus certified refurbished — $170, was $250

 Why buy

  • Excellent image quality
  • two-way audio
  • 1800 lumens floodlight
  • 270-degree motion detection range

Security cameras with floodlights are pretty great, and this one from Ring is one of the better ones, especially given the clear daylight images that come with HDR, meaning you’re likely to see even minute details with full color. At night, the floodlights illuminate with a power of 2,000 lumens, a substantial amount, and are triggered by the infrared motion sensor with a 270-degree angle. The downside is that the camera only has a 110-degree field of view, so if the floodlights are triggered on the edges, there’s a chance you might not see anything on the video, which is a bit of a let-down, although not necessarily a deal breaker.

As for night footage, the quality is still good, and the Ring camera has an infrared LED to illuminate the area at night, so you’ll still be able to see what’s going on. The detection range in front of the camera is about 40 feet, which is substantial, and you can change the detection range so that you’re not constantly getting alerts for things you don’t need to. The Ring is pretty great, and of course, it integrates with Alexa, but keep in mind that you’re essentially forced to use a subscription service if you want to record video, which costs $3/month/device or $10/month for an unlimited number of devices, which is better if you have four or more cameras.

That said, if you decide you don’t want to subscribe, you can still view the Ring video feed live and use the two-way audio. The latter feature is great since it allows you to talk to anybody trying to break in and acts as a great deterrent, and if it doesn’t, there’s also a 105-decibel alarm that you can trigger. The one main thing to keep in mind here is that you need to wire it up to your house’s electricity, and it also needs a good wireless connection since there’s no ethernet port on it.

Arlo Essential Spotlight Camera 3-pack — $296, was $350

John Velasco / Digital Trends

Why Buy

  • Color Night Vision
  • Easy to install and use
  • Bright Spotlight
  • Supports IFTTT

If you want one of the better wireless cameras out there, then the Arlo essential is a great option, and while it doesn’t have a removable internal battery like other Arlo wireless cameras, it’s easy to take down and re-install for charging. Another thing we like is that you get some color video, even in night mode, and there’s an infrared light for the night when there’s no other light around, so you can see what’s going on even without a spotlight. Even so, there is a spotlight for you, which is great if you want to use it for some extra security and to brighten up areas, although don’t expect it to be incredibly bright.

Much like other wireless cameras, it doesn’t need a hub but rather just a wireless connection to the internet. It also doesn’t use any power cables since it runs on a battery, which means you can install it pretty much anywhere, and it is weather-resistant, so it should handle the elements just fine as long as you don’t put it in a completely uncovered place. The motion sensor is also pretty good, and you can adjust the level of what it alerts you with, whether it’s people, packages, or vehicles passing by, which is pretty useful.

There’s also an included two-way audio, which can be great for warding off introduction or talking with delivery folks. It also works well with all the virtual assistants, including Google Assistant, Alexa, Apple Smart home kit, and Samsung SmartThings, so that you can integrate it into your existing ecosystem. Of course, one important thing to keep in mind is that if you want to use the more advanced features and cloud storage, you need to get the Arlo Secure package which costs $3/month/device or $10/month for unlimited devices. It’s competitively priced, and for the extra features such as e911, Smoke/CO Alarm Detection, and motion detection zones, it’s worth it.

Arlo Pro 4 Spotlight Camera 2-pack — $350, was $380

Why Buy

  • 2k resolution with HDR
  • Long battery life
  • Color night vision
  • Works with a variety of virtual assistants

If you like the Arlo Essential and want something with a little bit more punch, then the Arlo Pro 4 is the one to go for, especially given that it has an upgraded 2k HDR camera to work with, giving you much better detail resolution than other cameras on the market. Of course, many folks might then worry that the battery doesn’t last long, but thankfully you can decrease the resolution down to 720p to help conserve the battery if you want to. It also has two-way audio for you to speak to and hear any creepy crawlies and a relatively loud alarm if all else fails.

Another thing that’s pretty impressive about the Arlo Pro 4 is the 160-degree field of view, which you don’t often see on camera on the market, and you can even decrease the FoV if you need to place it inside a home or somewhere where 160-degree is too much. Regarding placement, mounting the Arlo Pro 4 is pretty, as it comes with a similar magnetic mount to the Google Nest, although you can also get a rotating mount for an additional cost if you’d prefer that. You’ll also be happy to know that it has a reasonably powerful spotlight that is activated by motion control, although it’s not going to be powerful enough to be used as a standalone flood light for general illumination purposes.

Much like other Arlo products, most features are locked behind the Arlo Secure package, costing $3/month/per device or $10/month for an unlimited number of devices. Again, things like its advanced zone control, which allows you to set up more than one zone, or e911, are only available with the subscription package. That being said, it’s competitively priced and not a bad deal, all things considered, so it shouldn’t be considered a dealbreaker for the extra $3-10 per month you’d end up paying.

Blink Outdoor – 5-camera kit with Blink Mini — $380, was $415

Why buy

  • Excellent battery life
  • Great video quality
  • Easy installation
  • Local storage option

The Blink Outdoor shows that you don’t need to fork over a ton of money to get a good wireless security camera, and with the Blink Sync Module 2 (sold separately), you don’t have to spend a ton of money on subscription services. That being said, if you don’t want to drop the extra money, the security camera comes with a free trial, after which you pay $3/month for various features, including online storage.

As for the security camera, you get 1080p resolution and a surprisingly great 110-degree field of view, not to mention some great image quality for something so tiny. While this is battery-powered with two AAs, the battery life is still pretty good, lasting up to two years, which is impressive and helps keep the maintenance effort down. It manages this by only turning on when it’s triggered by movement in its field of view, and even better, you can adjust the motion zones that alert you through the Blink Home Monitor app so you don’t constantly get needless alerts.

Another nice feature is that it comes with a speaker, which you can use to deter thieves or even animals, which isn’t necessarily the best feature out there, but it’s still pretty useful. The wireless camera is also weatherproof so that you can set it up outside without any worries; plus, it’s easy to put up yourself since it’s wireless, only needing a couple of screws and pairing. We also really like that it works with Alexa, which means you can monitor the camera through any Alexa device, which is pretty cool.

How much should you spend on a security camera?

Ultimately, that depends a lot on what you want out of it. The more money you pay, the better the quality security camera is going to be, mostly in terms of resolution. For the most part, the average good security camera goes for around $150 to $200, and that tends to buy you floodlights, 1080p video, and two-way audio. If you want better resolution, like in the case of the Arlo Pro 4, then you’re talking $250 to $300+. That being said, you can get security camera packs and kits, which help decrease the overall cost of each unit, and that’s a great way to go if you need more than one camera.

Another cost you need to consider is the subscription service a lot of these security cameras require for you to get all the features plus recording. The most competitive rates are $3/month/device or $10/month for unlimited devices, which both Amazon and Arlo have. Is it worth paying more than that? Possibly, especially if the camera itself is cheaper or comes with added features, but ultimately you have to think about it in terms of the lifetime cost, and if you’re going to have the security cameras for 5-10 years, subscription costs start to add up quickly.

miwifi.

com and 192.168.31.1 – enter the Xiaomi

router settings

Let’s guess, you wanted to go into the settings of your Xiaomi router, but something went wrong. Guessed? In this article, I will try to show in detail how to log into the router control panel at router.miwifi.com, miwifi.com, or 192.168.31.1. Simply put, how to open the settings page in the browser. This page is called the web interface. For some reason, it is often called a personal account. Although these are different things, but today is not about that.

And so, you can enter the Xiaomi router settings at the IP address 192.168.31.1 (this address is set by default), or through the hostname miwifi.com . This address is indicated on the router body:

The new Mi WiFi Router 4C, Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 4A, 4A Gigabit Edition and Xiaomi Router AC1200 routers use address router.miwifi.com . But miwifi.com and 192.168.31.1 also work.

Nothing at all without this. To perform the first configuration of the router, you need access to the web interface. To change the password, or some other parameters, you also need to go to the control panel. Of course, there is no need to go there every day, but still.

I will show on the example of my Xiaomi mini WiFi router and Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 4A. But following this instruction, you can also enter the settings of the Xiaomi WiFi MiRouter 3, Mi WiFi 3c, Xiaomi Mi WiFi Router 3G, Mi WiFi Router HD, Pro R3P, Xiaomi Mi Nano, Mi WiFi Router 4C, 4A Gigabit Edition, AC1200.

If you want to configure and manage the router from your phone or tablet, it is best to do this through the proprietary “Mi Wi-Fi” application, which can be installed from Google Play on Android and from the App Store for iOS devices. But it is also possible through the browser. If you don’t want to install the app.

At the end of this article I will try to answer the most popular questions on this topic. For example: how to open settings in Russian or English, what password to enter when logging in, and I will also share links to other useful articles.

How to access the Xiaomi web interface at miwifi.com or 192.168.31.1?

First of all, we connect to the router. You can connect it to a computer or laptop using a network cable. But, since there is no network cable with Xiaomi routers (at least with the mini model), this is not very relevant. But just in case, I’m showing you how to do it (note that you may have Internet connected to the blue port, I just didn’t have it connected at the time the photo was taken).

Or connect to a Wi-Fi network from your laptop, phone, tablet, etc. If the router is new, the network will be with a factory name and not password protected.

After connecting, open any browser on your computer or mobile device (I recommend standard Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge) and go to miwifi.com (you can type from http:// you get http://miwifi.com).

If the settings at this address are not available and you see an error, then try going to 192. 168.31.1 . You can also dial from http://

Enter settings at router.miwifi.com

We enter the address in the address bar of the browser, and not in the search bar. And then instead of the control panel, Yandex or Google will open with search results.

Pay attention! Following this instruction, you can access the router on the original firmware. If you have OpenWRT firmware installed, or Padavan, then the address will most likely be 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.0.1

If you do not open the settings page, then see the solutions in the article: does not go to 192.168.31.1 and miwifi.com.

If the router has not yet been configured, a window will open offering to install the program on a mobile device. We skip it and move on to configuring the router. You can look at the example of setting up Xiaomi mini WiFi.

If your router is already configured, you will be prompted for a password. This is the password you (or someone else) set during the first setup. This is not the password for the Wi-Fi network (but they may be the same).

And after authorization (if you specify the password correctly), the web interface will appear.

If you forgot the password from the Xiaomi router, you will have to reset all parameters to the factory settings. You can find a link to the instructions below.

Login problems, password, control panel language and other information

We have already considered the process of accessing the web interface. I want to answer a few more questions and clarify some of the nuances. As practice shows, it is not always possible to enter the router settings without problems.

  • What should I do if the settings page does not open? An error appears, the Xiaomi website, or a search engine. Be sure to check the connection to the router. Be it cable or Wi-Fi. Please note that you should only be connected to a Xiaomi router. Maybe you connected via cable, and the laptop is still connected to some kind of Wi-Fi network. Try changing your browser. Pay attention to which line you enter the address router.miwifi.com or miwifi.com. Try to go to 192.168.31.1. And if possible, log in from another device. You can also reset your router to factory settings.
  • How to open miwifi.com in Russian or English? The language of the control panel does not depend on what address or how you enter it. It depends on the firmware. I must say right away that there is no original Xiaomi firmware in Russian. The control panel can be either in Chinese (like on my Xiaomi mini WiFi), or at best in English (you can try updating the firmware to English). If the Internet through the router is already working, then the settings can be translated in the Chrome browser, or Yandex Browser.
The translation is not perfect and the appearance of the page is a little spoiled, but it is much more convenient to configure this way.
  • What password do I need to enter when entering the settings? I already wrote about this in the article.
