Gas-Stoves: Biden’s new crackdown on another appliance will be worse than gas stoves

Biden’s new crackdown on another appliance will be worse than gas stoves

OPINION

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

We have seen a big consumer backlash in 2023 over Biden administration bureaucrats targeting gas stoves, but that could pale in comparison to the coming anger over costly air conditioning regulations.

In fact, that has already begun, making this unusually hot summer even more unpleasant for homeowners needing air conditioner repairs. And things could get downright ugly starting next summer.

The Environmental Protect Agency (EPA) just announced a 40% production cut in 2024 for hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the widely used class of refrigerants being targeted for their claimed contribution to climate change. As it is, the modest 10% cut in force today has already caused many HFCs to triple in price, including HFC-410a which is used in most home air conditioners.

EXPERTS WARN BIDEN ADMIN’S WATER HEATER CRACKDOWN WILL HIKE PRICES, REDUCE CONSUMER CHOICE

As a result, replacing refrigerant lost from a leak has cost millions of homeowners at least $150-$200 more than it used to. But next summer, stricter production quotas will be in effect, likely sending refrigerant costs through the roof — and repair costs with them.

EPA regulators are targeting new systems too. A pending rule would outlaw all but the most climate-friendly, new central air-conditioners by 2025.  Doing so is strongly supported by the air conditioning equipment makers who see an opportunity to skew the market towards their pricier models.

It would be bad enough if EPA were the only federal agency that has it in for affordable air conditioning, but the Department of Energy (DOE) is just as bad. DOE has a track record for concocting energy efficiency regulations for air conditioners and other appliances that boost a homeowner’s up-front cost so much that it may never get earned back in the form of energy savings.

Perhaps the worst of them, created at the end of the Obama administration and taking effect on January 1 of this year, has caused prices for new central air conditioning systems to spike by up to $1,000, according to several installers.

And the agency is already in the early stages of devising an even tougher rule. Separate rulemakings also target window unit air conditioners and other categories of cooling systems.

What explains the anti-homeowner tilt? Like much of the nonsense coming from Washington these days, it’s based on the Energy Department’s “need to confront the global climate crisis.”

Indeed, beyond air conditioners and stoves, Biden’s regulators are going after furnaces, incandescent light bulbs, washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, ceiling fans, water heaters and other home appliances.

Hardly any room in your house will be spared, and each proposed new regulation asserts that the climate-related benefits help justify the extra cost. All of this meddling is bad news for consumers, but the measures targeting air conditioners will likely prove to be the worst of the bunch.

The one-two punch of both EPA and DOE aiming their red tape at air conditioners has already boosted the cost of staying cool this summer, and starting next year the homeowner pain could be every bit as unbearable as the heat.

Does Cooking With Gas Stoves Hurt Indoor Air Quality?

Does cooking with gas affect indoor air quality? Of course it does — that is simply no longer a question. How much, is the better question.

Combusting methane (natural gas) creates byproducts. Like any other chemical reaction, when natural gas is lit on fire, it reacts with the air and produces new chemical compounds. These include carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and other nitrogen–oxygen combinations, often referred to cumulatively as the NOx’s, formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds.

NO2 worsens respiratory conditions. This includes asthma, and recent research found that homes with gas stoves have a 12.7% greater chance of having children with asthma.

CO is a known killer, because it binds with greater affinity to our blood’s albumen than oxygen (O2) does (a random fact from my college biology class that has stuck with me to this day). The result is that less oxygen gets to your muscles. This is why, when someone smokes a cigarette, it can calm them down — it literally deprives muscles of oxygen, and the muscles are forced to be less active as a result. Healthy? No … but effective in the short run to calm people down because of this mechanism. CO causes headaches, vertigo, nausea, and, yes, death, if there’s enough to truly deprive your blood’s albumen of oxygen such that none reaches your brain.

VOCs are bad. Just. Bad. They come in a lot of shapes and sizes, but they are known to cause irritation and persistent problems with eyes, nose, and throat. And they are suspected to do a whole lot more.

A recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that 12.7% of current childhood asthma in the United States is attributable to gas stove use.

Wait. Did that set in? Read that again if not. It’s not just saying that homes with gas stoves have a higher incidence of childhood asthma, which, if you’re the natural gas industry, is easy to dismiss as correlation, not causation … as maybe a function of the homes and where they are, versus a literal cause and a literal effect. It’s much stronger than that — it is saying that 13 out of every 100 children in the US that have asthma have it because natural gas is used in their home’s stove.

PBS recently did an investigative look at natural gas stoves. Some key elements:

  • Air quality devices used in the video show that NO2 levels hit 500 parts per billion (PPB), which is 5x the one-hour air standard set by the EPA for NOx, and 40x greater than WHO daily guidelines.
  • The NOx gases do not stay in the kitchen — they spread throughout the whole house to levels that are higher than recommended by health agencies.
  • 35% reductions were found after apartments switched from gas stoves to induction cookstoves.

I don’t like paywalls. You don’t like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don’t like paywalls, and so we’ve decided to ditch ours.

Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It’s a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So …

Julia Skopich

chose a gas stove for home

Author profile

Gas stoves run on natural or liquefied gas.

Natural gas is predominantly methane, while LPG is a mixture of propane and butane. The first is supplied through the main gas pipeline, the second is pumped into cylinders or a gas tank – a special container on the site.

Due to the lower cost of gas, cooking on a gas stove is cheaper than on an electric one, and, unlike an induction one, any cookware is suitable for it. On Yandex Market, the cost of a device with four burners and an oven starts from 10,150 R. as much as when the oven is under the stove. But in the article, I considered the combined options.

A gas stove can have many additional features such as a gas control system, automatic electric ignition, a spit or a grill in the oven. I figured out how to choose a device so as not to overpay for unnecessary functions, but at the same time not save on the necessary ones.

Selection criteria

Studied the characteristics of gas stoves and reviews on Yandex Market, Ozone, as well as in the online electronics stores M-video, DNS and Eldorado and compiled a list of devices. The price category includes only plates with a mechanical type of control, that is, equipped with rotary controls and buttons. Electronically controlled devices are more expensive. Here are the criteria I took into account.

Oven capacity. It is worth choosing it based not only on the size of the opening where the stove will stand, but also on the number of people in the family. For one or two, a model of 35-45 liters is suitable, for three or four – 50-60 liters, and if the family is larger, it is better to choose a model with a volume of 65-70 liters.

Another thing to consider is how often you use the oven: if not more than a couple of times a month, you might not want to choose a large model. And if there are two of you in the family, but you cook in the oven several times a day, on the contrary, you can look at models with a volume of 50-60 liters or even 65-70 liters.

Oven type. According to the type of energy carrier, the oven can be gas or electric.

In a gas oven, heating occurs due to a gas burner, which is located below, while the heating element in an electric oven is still on top and on the back wall. This gives you more options for cooking and ensures that your food cooks evenly.

How to choose a hob

In more advanced gas ovens, a fan is installed on the back wall, which provides convection of hot air and promotes uniform baking, but this may not be the case in budget models.

The functions of electric ovens are usually more diverse: self-cleaning with steam, timer and microwave. Some models can even determine the weight of a dish and memorize recipes, but they cost more than 40,000 R. If the burners run on gas and the oven runs on electricity, the stove will still have to be placed near the gas pipe.

Oven light. The function is available in most modern models: it allows you to see how the cooking process is going on without opening the oven door.

Oven cleaning. During cooking, drops of fat settle on the walls of the oven, forming a hard crust.

You can remove it in the traditional way – using a sponge and cleaning agent, but you can make the task easier: place a tray with water and detergent in an empty oven, and then turn on the appliance at 50-90 ° C. The steam softens the fat, and it remains to be wiped off with a sponge.

There are more modern ways.

Pyrolytic cleaning burns off contaminants at around 500°C. This method does not require human intervention – you only need to sweep the ashes. But during combustion, an unpleasant odor is emitted and a lot of electricity is consumed.

Catalytic cleaning involves applying a special coating to the walls, which consists of an oxidation catalyst – cerium dioxide, copper oxide, manganese or cobalt – and an absorbent material. Under the action of a catalyst, fat decomposes into soot and water, this happens at a temperature of 140 to 200 ° C. But the catalyst is applied only to the walls – the bottom will have to be cleaned manually.

In the low-cost models featured in this article, ovens can only be cleaned by hand or softened with steam.

Electric ignition type. Electric ignition allows you to turn on the burner without matches or a lighter – with the help of an electric spark.

If a mechanism is built into the handle that ignites the burner at the same time as it is turned on, this is an automatic type of electric ignition.

If a special button must be pressed after switching on the hotplate, this is a mechanical type. It is not very convenient, since you have to use both hands.

Almost all modern models are equipped with electric ignition. But during power outages, it will not be possible to use electric ignition, so it is always better to have a pack of matches or a lighter with you.

Gas control available. This feature is not available on all stoves, and may only be available on ovens or hotplates. The bottom line is that when the fire in the burner goes out, the mechanism with the sensor turns off the gas supply, avoiding its leakage. This is convenient, since you do not have to be in the kitchen all the time cooking. If, for example, water floods the burner, the gas will simply stop flowing, and the stove will have to be turned on again to resume operation.

How I connected the gas in a private house after reconstruction

The fuel override time varies between models, but is usually about five seconds.

Plate cover. Not all modern models have it, although in the raised position it performs a protective function. The lid protects the kitchen apron from grease splashes, as well as from steam and overheating.

Nozzles or jets for bottled gas. These are replacement parts of the stove burner, the function of which is to supply fuel to the combustion point in the required volume.

The diameter of the hole in each type of jet is designed for a certain pressure in the gas pipeline system, and it differs depending on the method of supply and type of fuel – natural or liquefied. Under high pressure, the gas liquefies and decreases in volume, which allows it to be packaged in small cylinders. Therefore, if the country house is not connected to the main gas, you can use a gas stove from a cylinder, but then you will need to change the jets: for liquefied gas they have a smaller diameter.

Nozzles are usually supplied with a gas stove, but they can also be purchased separately. When choosing, it is necessary to take into account the firm of the plate. Price: 400-700 R for a set of five pieces.

Surface material. The main working area of the stove is the hob, where the burners are located. There are four types of coatings: enamel, stainless steel, glass-ceramic, tempered glass, they differ in care features.

Enamel is subject to mechanical damage, and a strong impact on the surface may cause chipping. But such plates are cheaper.

Stainless steel withstands mechanical shock and is more resistant to abrasive powders and metal sponges, but if used constantly, the plate will lose its luster. The main disadvantage is that such a plate quickly becomes stained and streaked.

Glass-ceramic and tempered glass impress with their strength and smooth, shiny surface. But such surfaces cannot be wiped with abrasive agents and metal sponges should not be used.

I removed from the list stoves that were criticized a lot by users, as well as those for which reviews could not be found. I read the comments about the rest and drew conclusions about the pros. The final list includes 10 gas stoves that meet the selection criteria and with a large number of positive reviews:

  1. Gefest 5100-03 0001.
  2. Hansa FCMW53000.
  3. Darina PL GM 241 010 1X.

  8. Hansa FCMW64040.
  9. Gorenje GG5A12WF-B.
  10. Gefest 5300-03 0046.

Of these, I chose four that fit the nominations

  • Optimal

Product reviews in Tinkoff Magazine are independent. We make a verdict based on reviews of things and devices that we carefully studied, or how these things performed during editorial tests.

Optimal – Bosch HGG120E21R

Included in the average price range and has a gas oven that is suitable for a family of three to four people. Starting at R24,999, it has more features than many gas stoves in this price segment.

Users like full throttle control as it makes the stove safer. The type of electric ignition is automatic, that is, built into the rotary knob. The stove has a lid that protects the kitchen apron from dirt while cooking, and the surface is made of enameled steel. The set includes nozzles for bottled gas, a grill, a baking sheet, a stand for Turks and a drawer for dishes.

Clean the oven in the traditional way – with a sponge and detergent. There is a backlight inside, but some note that the flame of the oven is not visible and you still have to open the door. Some others think that the baking sheet that comes with the kit is too thin – it is difficult to please everyone.

How much:

  • in Sbermegamarket — from 24,999 R;
  • in DNS – from 24 999 R.

Budget with a small oven – Gefest 3200-08 K86

Budget option with a minimum set of necessary functions. The stove has a mechanical electric ignition. Coating – enamelled steel. The oven is gas, but its volume is small – 42 liters, which means that it will not work to bake a whole big goose in it.

The safety system blocks the gas supply if the fire suddenly goes out, but only in the oven. Gas control for burners is not provided. There is also a backlight in the oven, but you will have to clean the surface manually. The kit includes a baking sheet, a roasting pan, a grill and a temperature indicator that shows degrees. True, some users note the difficulty in setting a stable temperature in the oven.

Cylinder gas nozzles will have to be purchased separately if required. The stove also does not have a full-fledged lid, which means that fat can splatter over the kitchen apron – many do not like this.

How I gasified a country house in the suburbs

How much it costs:

  • in DNS — from 13,999 R;
  • on Yandex Market – from 11 859 R.

Alternative. Gefest GC 532E4WH.

This model has a complete lid that protects the backsplash from dirt. Other characteristics are similar to Gefest 3200-08 K86, but instead of a brazier, the set includes a crockery box.

The burners are available in different capacities, and users like that they are widely spaced – you can put a kettle, a frying pan and a medium-sized pot at the same time. Of the minuses, they note the absence of jets for bottled gas in the kit, but they can be bought separately.

How much it costs:

  • on Yandex Market – from 16,399 R;

Expensive with a spacious oven – Gorenje GG 5A11XF

The gas stove has a stylish design and more features than many other appliances under 40,000 RUR. The rotary switch is equipped with an electric ignition that works automatically. Gas control is provided for both burners and the oven, which makes the device as safe as possible.

The stove has four burners of different diameters and power, which allow you to cook several dishes at the same time. Thanks to the “minimum fire” function, you can set a low burning without fear of the burner dying out.

Gas oven with a capacity of 70 liters allows you to cook on several baking sheets at once, the set includes two baking sheets and a wire rack, there is a backlight. Users note that the oven bakes well: the dishes are baked and do not burn. This is due to the vaulted shape of the chamber: the heated air can circulate freely, heating dishes evenly from all sides. And the built-in thermostat allows you to maintain the selected temperature. It is also convenient that there is a drawer for dishes under the oven.
