Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller) has one gift: throwing tantrums. Blue Raja (Hank Azaria) is a deadly hand with spoons and forks (but not knives). Shoveler (William H. Macy) can dig with superior speed and force. The Bowler (Janeane Garafalo) rolls the ball with superhuman precision. Spleen (Paul Reubens) has a gaseous problem that he’s turned into a weapon against evildoers. Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell) is convinced he can become invisible at will, but he hasn’t actually done it yet. And The Sphinx (Wes Studi) does have an unusual power: he can cut metal objects with his mind. Aided by addled gadget master Dr. Heller (Tom Waits), the Mystery Men make their move against Casanova and Annabel, who feel just threatened enough to make things personal by kidnapping Mr. Furious’ girlfriend Monica (Claire Forlani).[Comedy | Action]

What do you know about game television in Russia? Do you remember at least one channel dedicated exclusively to computer games? Today we will talk about this.
In the 2000s, when the grass was, of course, greener, the dollar was cheaper, and the Internet was something fantastic, television was one of the leading sources of information. And of course, various programs about computer and video games appeared on TV one way or another. About legendary representatives 9You know the 0s even without me – Ot Vinta , Dandy. New Reality . But the zeros could please with a number of quite good (especially in conditions of limited information) programs. Zoom at MTV , Virtuality , Video Game Icon , Scary Interesting at MTV , lesser known Megadrom Agent Z , X-Play Game with sequel on Rambler and many others .
But all of them are just separate blocks in the airtime schedule of one or another TV channel, which, often, did not even have a close relation to video games and the industry. But what if we launch a channel ALL DEDICATED TO VIDEO GAMES?
And there were even two of them. Gameland TV and First Game .
This video is about Gameland TV . Firstly, because it was on the list of channels stolen from a neighbor in the stairwell via a coaxial cable, and secondly, because the author of these lines from 2007 to 2009 did not switch from Gameland TV for several weeks , listening to statements from parents that “I got to watch some kind of pornography.” But let’s start from the beginning.
Gameland TV is the TV channel of the Gameland media holding, which owned many magazines of various kinds. You probably remember Country Games , PC Games , Hacker . There were also less well-known among the “target audience” Total DVD , Cross Stitch and others.
On April 1, 2007, the holding furiously and irrevocably launched the broadcast of its “Television for Gamers” with pathos advertising in absolutely all magazines that belonged to Gameland – “TV is now ours!” and “Russia’s first TV channel for gamers”.
Denis Nikishin (aka SpaceMan) chief editing director of CD Starny Igry in his relatively recent video stated that the idea of creating a channel seemed strange to him at the start. Allegedly, they no longer watched TV and slowly moved to the Internet, looking for information there.
Perhaps this is true for Moscow, but the global network did not come to the regions so rapidly, and therefore, magazines, CDs and “OH GOD, A WHOLE TV CHANNEL” were quite profitable and satisfied the information hunger.
The broadcast schedule of the TV channel was very diverse for that period of time.
The program “ Topics “, which aired every day, covered all the most interesting news in the gaming industry. Of course, now it’s very funny to watch archival releases: the hosts often don’t understand the essence of the issue at all, or don’t know at all how to pronounce this or that tricky foreign name of the next game or game series, and the editors, in turn, let it all go on the air. method “as is”. Still at my 9-For 10 years, this program was literally a window into the big world of the gaming industry. You no longer need to wait for the next issue of “ Igromania ” and ask your mother to go to Rospechat for a new issue. After all, the news, here it is, is right on TV and a little worse than “ Videomania ” of the same year.
A special place in my heart even now is occupied by the program “ Prohodnyak ”, but it will be quite difficult for me to explain what its essence is … stages of a particular video game. Often console. Again, in the days of YouTube’s infancy, these refined let’s plays were mind boggling. But it was not even a let’s play in the usual sense of the word, because the airtime was extremely strictly limited, and therefore, from the game, at best, there were a couple of frames at the beginning, a little in the middle, and, well, the final under the credits.
But that wasn’t what she liked. Firstly, different console exclusives often got into the program. For example, Metal Gear Solid 4 , inFamous and many others. You can’t even imagine what a pleasure it is to tell your classmates not about the mainstream Grand Theft Auto IV , but about such an incomprehensible, wild MGS4 . Again, taking into account the lack of Internet in many homes at that time, and many of my classmates did not even have banal computers, all this was literally dizzy.
Nevertheless, there were quite a few very strange and slightly wild programs on the air. The same “ Seine ” is just funny videos, somehow downloaded from the Internet (do we remember what year we are talking about now?) With comments by the presenter or presenter.
By the way, now the format for showing YouTube trailers is fully exploited by the channel GameShow , aka Etter , aka E (program “ Like in the movies “). We’ll talk about it some other time.
The same program “ Banzai ” about Japanese culture and anime seemed very pretentious on the gaming channel, but nevertheless, due to the charismatic host Kiguri, who appeared literally everywhere, both on the discs of Games Land , and within PC Games , and even looked at the terrifying and brain acid video magazine Level UP , I just couldn’t change the channel.
Even then I knew perfectly well with my head that stories about sword fights or Japanese love for panzzu were hardly interesting to me. But the very fact of having a girl as a host on the gaming channel, and, as it turned out, who understands not only the topic of Japan, but also video games in general, spoiled quite a few clean pants for me.
Gameland TV in general, throughout its entire life cycle, it seemed to be looking for itself. There were also “ Stories of the series” even before they were re-invented by StopGame (the program was called “ In Focus “), and “ First Level ” with a completely obscene presenter of Alexander Glagolev , who did not I was embarrassed to joke, and the viewer, and the developers, and even the creators of this content. As part of the broadcast, the author took a novelty and passed, like a pun, the FIRST LEVEL from it. And what the creators considered for that very FIRST LEVEL, history, of course, is silent.
Even speedruns were analyzed on Gameland TV long before it was “invented” on YouTube . True, it can only be called parsing nominally. In Speedwalkers , the host only talked about the conditional world record in the quick passage of a particular game, and then we were shown approximately forty minutes of naked footage from the game without any comments.
You might think that I am now indulging in sweet nostalgia without any share of healthy skepticism. But no. 9The 0009 Gameland TV was definitely cool for its time period, but it didn’t stand the test of time at all, even within its own life cycle.
Of course, there were quite a lot of information programs on the air about technology ( Techno ) and eSports ( Cyberfiles ), and even preview games were quite concerned (In Igroteka ). But it was necessary to shoot at a nuclear pace, and apparently no one in the state counted on this. As a result, repetitions of the same programs were broadcast quite often on the air, and within the same day. And, believe me, even the coolest show, watched for the hundredth time, can finally set the teeth on edge. I often caught myself thinking that I was watching the next issue for the tenth, or even the thousandth time.
Other than that, there were generally no video game reviews on the Game Channel™ as such. Yes, you could see the passage pieces of some Gears of War II , but to find out an objective assessment of the same journalists Games Land , you could only buy the appropriate magazine. And do not care that this is the same holding and the authors of the Country quite often dropped in on the light of various programs on the channel.
You could find out various news in the spirit of “New Splinter Cell is delayed”, but find out when the conditional Mirror’s Edge will be released on PC and where the hell to buy it on Gameland TV would not come out with all the desire.
And of course, on this channel, the program “ From Screw ” received a second birth, having survived one liposuction, it was already “ Without Screw ”, but this is such a thing in itself that you need to write a separate material about it.
Inter-program interruptions stand apart. Every hour the so-called “ OtzhYg “- these are several trailers of the game (often one) with overdubbed music. And yes, despite the simplicity of the format, these “clips” introduced me to many different groups of different genres. Even now, fans are bit by bit restoring these clips and posting them on YouTube , continuing the work they started in 2007. By the way, these same clips introduced me to such games as Uncharted Drake’s Fortune , Condemned 2 , Hellgate: London (there was even a story that someone bought the game after the video shown and was very disappointed, as in her, and in the TV channel itself) and many others.
However, problems with the Gameland TV began to surface fairly quickly, a year after launch. The first of these was the lack of targeted advertising as such. Investors and creators of the channel obviously expected to attract publishers and developers as advertisers, but at that time neither Sony nor Microsoft were particularly eager to work in Russia, let alone pay for advertising on cable and satellite TV channels.
And if Microsoft still translated its most significant games into Russian – Fable II , Gears of War II and others, then Sony at the launch of PlayStation 3 did not translate almost anything. As a result of all of the above, the channel had to advertise ringtones for a mobile phone, spin its own “pre-rolls”, and boast of “WIDE REACH”. The most ironic thing is that no one has ever seen the exact figures for the number of viewers.
The second key factor was that the project could not identify itself. Gameland TV tried to enter the territory of cinema, and hardware, and many other things. In the end, it turned out everything and everything, but nothing at the same time. Of course, it is clear that games could hardly attract advertisers (especially given the situation above), but then it was not worth positioning the channel as a hardcore gaming channel at all.
In a normal situation, when you came after school (like most of the viewers of this channel at that time), you could stumble upon either another repetition of a program that had already completely lifted up, or player clips, which ended just as quickly by the end of the channel’s life, and soon were and completely cut out of the channel completely.
In addition, Gameland TV kept to the last on those programs and formats that were launched at the very start of the channel. And if in 2007-2009 “ Prokhodnyaki ” still looked quite good, then with the advent of the Internet it was not at all clear how the squeezed out flatplay from the TV differs from the average let’s player on the Internet.
Relatively new on Gameland TV in the last year of life appeared the program “ Igroteka ”, which we have already talked about above and “ Portable ” about portable entertainment, smartphones and so on, but it was no longer possible to pull out the channel. The Internet began to actively replace and compete with traditional television, and given that the main audience of the channel are gamers who are among the first to try new devices and technologies, Gameland TV simply could not reformat in time and offer something different from what is already then began to appear on the network. It was no longer necessary to wait for the next issue of “Themes” at 20.00 Moscow time, because now all this was available in a couple of clicks on various resources, much more quickly.
In addition, as Fedor Timofeev noted in an interview with Geek-TV , there were a sufficient number of people on the channel who simply did not understand what to do within a channel of such specifics. Yes, most of the presenters were interested in the gaming industry and IT in one way or another, some are even now running similar projects on the Internet, but there were also those who did not understand anything about games at all.
The footages were often recruited by third parties, and many famous people played the role of announcers, for example, Vladislav Kopp , but it was quite obvious that for them Gameland TV was nothing more than another part-time job. Filmed footage – passed. Did you send a text? Sounded and passed. And so it turned out that the often ambitious presenters, editors, who really burned with the project, faced people who, often, did not care at all about the final quality of the outgoing product. Editors write texts, editing directors glue together pieces shot by cameramen, and there is absolutely no one to think how to tie it all together.
Newscasts with catastrophic errors were often allowed to air, presenters could easily talk about one thing against a background of completely different footage, and much more.
At the same time, it is important to note that at that time Gameland TV , with all its obvious shortcomings, was a good attempt at game television in Russia. During the active heyday of channel , YouTube had not yet developed to what we see now, and the only competitor on TV was « First Game “, which did not hesitate to put on the air completely unprepared presenters, let’s plays of the level “This is my first video, don’t judge strictly”, and just footage of some old game, even without a voice-over and proudly call it the heading “ Retro “.
At Gameland TV , they perfectly understood that potentially someone would watch the channel’s programs, so the texts were slandered by professional (as far as the budget allowed) announcers, and in discrediting relations with Fraps , only the transmission “ OtzhYg ” was noticed, which was an obvious filler on the air grid, especially at night.
He definitely had chances for a long and happy life, but, unfortunately, at that time the gaming and gaming industry in Russia was simply not ready. She is by and large unprepared. On Gameland TV , within the framework of advertising blocks in the active years of life, not custom-made videos from advertisers were often played, but advertisements for the media holding’s own magazines Gameland and other stuff, which obviously barely made any money.
What game ad integrations do we see on TV now? Just a few ads for f2p stuff like Warface , Crossout and more. Almost no major single projects are advertised on TV, and Gameland TV was primarily designed for this audience.
Considering the specifics of that time, the channel barely paid for itself, so with the advent of broadband Internet access, when the entire audience moved there, Gameland TV didn’t have something to offer to potential viewers, but rather there were no budgets for filming and production of certain programs. The sluggishness of the leadership, the lack of a clear plan and direction, as well as complete isolation from the audience led to the fact that the formats invented in 2007 were exploited by the channel until the very closing, when they were simply not needed by anyone.
Already in August 2010 active production of all gears Gameland TV was discontinued and virtually the entire team was disbanded. According to rumors, they paid the employees of Gameland TV with the latest tripods and other equipment. With the advent of the editor and a clear course, it turned out that his vision was completely different from the original idea of \u200b\u200b24-hour TV channel about games, and already in September 2010, Gameland TV died and was reborn in the face of MAN TV . A male channel about cars, grandmas and selective erotica at night at a time when it was still possible. Yes, REN-TV , we are talking about you.
The sight was truly sad. Yes, game television did not pay for itself, there were quite a lot of repetitions and outdated formats, but they were their own, author’s ones. With the rebranding, endless repetitions of game shows were replaced by endless repetitions of bearded series, like “ Miami Vice ”, and in the spirit of Gameland TV , the same series could well spin over and over again within the same broadcast block. Some programs still remained within the new format – “ All Cinema ”, “ Igroteka ”, “ Techno ” and others, but it was extremely difficult and almost impossible to get on them, and not on the next series, the cassette with which they forgot to turn over in the video.
According to official data, Gameland decided to expand the advertising audience in this way. However, despite the total change in format, until 2011, archived episodes of programs from Gameland TV appeared on MAN TV , and in 2011 the channel barely lasted until December 1 and went after its progenitor.
This is how the story of one gaming TV channel ended. You might think it was a bad attempt. But I remember this TV channel with warmth in my heart. Most of the presenters who were students yesterday created an indescribable atmosphere in which you felt involved. You literally understood that these are people just like you, active gamers and geeks who are interested in the gaming industry.
Now even hated to me then “ OtzhYgi ” and “ Banzai ” look somehow surprisingly cute, literally conveying the spirit of that time. Thanks to the Gameland TV , you were the first in the class to know about the release of Killzone 2 and PlayStation 3 , marveled at the awesome level of physics in Alone in the Dark (2008) and marveled at the level design of Gears of War II , in which couldn’t play on my PC .
It was an incredibly open channel with no borders. Alexander Glagolev quite allowed himself greasy jokes, which now the modern, extremely censored and combed-out television machine would have hacked to death already at the production stage. Despite the lack of a budget, absolute blindness in terms of contact with the audience, the authors tried, tried and even achieved success. It’s just that at that difficult moment for everyone, the financial crisis and much more, there were no people and investors who could support all this.
Videos in the spirit of “Let’s hit the despondency with gaming” are practically the second reincarnation of “ OtzhYga ”, and modern news digests in the spirit of “ Infacta ”, “ All in ” and others are the next stage of news programs in the spirit of “ Topics “, “ Banzai “, “ Toy Library ” and “ Techno “.
In today’s conditions Gameland TV in its then state is unlikely to have survived, and this must be admitted. In our hearts, of course, we all want the revival of old programs, old TV channels and familiar presenters on the screen. But time is Gameland TV is gone. All the presenters from there somehow found a place in the gaming, printing and other industries. Kiguri, for example, moved to Japan, although she had previously broadcast about her only as part of a program from Moscow. Let’s just be happy for these people and let Gameland TV go to rest…
