TOP 10 Best foldable smartphones of 2023
The best foldable smartphones have experienced a renaissance. Now that LG has exited the phone business, taking dual-screen devices with it, Samsung is dominating the category. However, Chinese manufacturers are also on the alert.
Our ranking of the best foldable phones is growing exponentially, and that’s because foldable smartphones are finally going mainstream – although we only saw a small debut in 2019, three years later, more and more devices are being released.
07/22/2022 Update
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 have been added to the list of best foldable phones. so you can see where they rank in our rankings.

Foldable phones have all the advantages of a regular phone in terms of portability, and also have internal screens that compete with tablets. This technology isn’t nearly as cheap as you might think: The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 costs twice as much as the Samsung Galaxy S22, but it certainly looks the part.
In addition to these “full” folding models, there are also folding beds that cost relatively less. They work on the principle of retro models that are still fresh in our memory. So you get flagship features in the most compact form, but the specs are quite different from “full” foldable phones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4
Best foldable phone 0017 6.2″
Processor: Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1
RAM/Storage: 12GB/256GB 512GB 1TB
Open Size: 155.1 x 130.1 x 6.3mm
Closed Size : 155.1 x 67.1 x 14.2-15.8mm
Weight: 271 g
Pros
- Impressive primary and secondary screens
- Optimized for multitasking
- Slimmer hinge 9006 0
Cons
- Cameras are not the best for Samsung
- Fold all still noticeable
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the best foldable phone you can buy at the time of this ranking. It has more thoughtful upgrades than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
This is not a radically different device, but its cameras, in particular, the main one with 50 MP, are of much better quality. On top of that, there’s a noticeably more powerful Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, slightly improved design, and software that’s better suited to the large 7. 6-inch screen.
In fact, the displays and battery are pretty much the same, so if you already have a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, it probably doesn’t make much sense to upgrade to a new model, especially at such an impressive price.
But the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the best multitasking smartphone Samsung has ever made, the best foldable phone, and a great device in every way, so we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it if the price doesn’t put you off. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3
Still a great foldable phone 6 Secondary Screen Size: 6.2″ (2268 x 832)

Open Size: 9001 7 157 x 127 x 6.4 mm
Closed size: 157 x 66 x 14 to 16 mm
Weight: 271 g
Pros
- More durable and water resistant 900 60
- Two displays 120 Hz
- Software sharpened for multitasking
Cons
- S Pen not included
- Not cheap
models and adding new long-awaited features such as a 120Hz refresh rate for both displays. I wish the price was a little more attractive, but at the same time, the Galaxy Z Fold3 has a lower starting price than the Z Fold 2 when it debuted in 2020.
The increased durability of this foldable smartphone (now rated IPX8 for water resistance and a more durable screen) will alleviate concerns some people might have about whether the Galaxy Z Fold can withstand the rigors of everyday use. Samsung has also paid particular attention to working with app makers to ensure their software is optimized for the unique 7.6-inch foldable display.
S Pen support has been added to the Galaxy Z Fold3, similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but optional. This means you’ll have to pay extra for the S Pen as well as the stylus case since the phone itself doesn’t have a slot. But the Galaxy Z Fold3’s large main display offers plenty of space for drawing and taking notes.
If you’re looking for the most powerful foldable phone and one of the best devices overall, then the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a good choice, as long as you’re on a hefty budget.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4
Main screen size: 6.7 inches (2640 x 1080)
Sub screen size: 1.9″ (260 x 512)
CPU: Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1
RAM/Storage: 8GB/128GB, 256GB, 512GB
Open Size: 84 .9 x 71.9 x 15.9-17.1 mm
Closed size: 165.2 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm
Weight: 187 g
Pros
- Extended battery and faster charging
- Excellent performance
- Same price as previous model
Cons
- Minimal camera upgrades
- Display wrinkle still noticeable
upgrades are a faster Snapdragon chipset 8 Plus Gen 1 and a larger 3700mAh battery that charges slightly faster at 25W.
But the battery in particular is a very important upgrade. Although its operating time is not a record, it eliminates one of the weakest aspects of the previous model.
It’s not really necessary to upgrade your device from the Z Flip 3 to the Z Flip 4, but these upgrades are enough to make the Galaxy Z Flip 4 a better clamshell phone. Given the promises of the manufacturer to regularly release software updates, it should remain a good phone for a few more years.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3
Most affordable foldable phone0036 Secondary Screen Size: 1.9″ (260 x 512)
Processor: Snapdragon 888
RAM/Storage: 8GB/128GB, 256GB
Open Size: 165×71 x 7 mm
Closed size: 86 x 71 x 16-17 mm
Weight: 184 g
Pros
- More affordable
- Extended durability
- Extended lid display
Cons
- Short battery life
- No telephoto lens
Replacing the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the new Galaxy Z Flip3 sets new standards. The phone not only became more durable, but also acquired a better quality display. It is larger and contains more useful information.
The Flip3 design is more streamlined, with square edges and beautiful color schemes. It also received some internal upgrades, such as the Snapdragon 888 processor. However, the cameras and battery remain the same – the Galaxy Z Flip3 does not have a telephoto lens.
For the price, the Flip 3 is the most affordable folding device ever, but it has its drawbacks. Unfortunately, the battery life is not great at all. The bend in the middle remains quite noticeable to the touch or in the light.
The
Galaxy Z Flip 3 is probably the foldable device that most people will want to look at due to its attractive starting price. This is a stylish accessory that folds neatly to fit in your pocket or purse.

9 0058 Not the best sound
We would like to introduce another of our favorite folding smartphones – it’s the Find N. It has an attractive design, an outstanding folding screen, an easy-to-use lid, and its performance, cameras, and battery life are truly impressive. The absence of a wrinkle on the folding screen is aesthetically pleasing, while the smooth transition of content between the two screens with matching colors and brightness is literally amazing.
Find N is not a perfect device. It does not have official water and dust protection, the camera on the screen is not the best, and most importantly, it is extremely difficult to purchase, so in this case the naming is right on target. However, Find N does support Google services. One thing we can say for sure is that as Oppo’s first foldable smartphone, the Find N does a lot of things right.

Weight: 300g
Pros
- Edge-to-edge outer screen
- Same main and selfie cameras
Cons
- No Google apps and services
Huawei Mate Xs is the successor of Huawei The Mate X has received a ton of updates, resulting in a more robust device that has the same premium design as the original Mate X. also, the device does not have access to other features such as Google Maps.
Regardless, the Huawei Mate Xs is a pretty impressive smartphone and a great implementation of the foldable concept. It is a variant with a single external screen that either folds out to form an 8-inch tablet display or folds up to a 6.6-inch format.
It’s also powerful, with a high-end Kirin 990 chipset, 8GB RAM, 512GB storage, a quad-camera (led by a 40MP main sensor), a 4500mAh battery, and a stylish no-cutout design. And all this could not but lead to a rather high price.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2
Outdated best foldable smartphone ; 120 Hz)
Sub screen size : 6.2″ (2260 x 816 pixels)
CPU: Snapdragon 865 Plus
RAM/Storage: 12 GB / 256 GB
Open Size: 1 57x127x7 mm
Closed size: 157x66x17 mm
Weight: 280 g
Pros
- Flex mode adds versatility
- More durable
- Large convenient display on the lid
Cons
- Expensive
- Heavy
As before, the Samsung phone opens like a book to reveal a large display inside. But because the hinge is now cam-assisted, you can open the Galaxy Z Fold 2 at different angles, allowing for a new Flex Mode feature that separates the display into viewing and action areas. Multitasking has also been improved, now you can group applications in pairs to run at the same time.
The display on the outer cover of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has grown to 6. 2 inches, giving you plenty of work space even when the phone is closed. If you switch from the external to the internal display while browsing, continuity mode allows you to pick up where you left off.
Samsung is likely to release the new Galaxy Fold later this year, rumored to be in August. The new phone will reportedly add support for the S Pen, just like the Galaxy S21 Ultra. But until that happens, no other foldable phone can match the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Huawei P50 Pocket
Best camera
WATCH IN Y.MARKET
0036 Sub screen size:
Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G
RAM/Storage: 12GB 8GB/256GB 512GB
Open Size: 75.5x170x7.2mm
Closed Size Type: mm
Weight: 190g
Pros
- Great camera
- Distinctive folding design
- Large, clear internal screen
Cons
- Very small external screen
- No access to Google Mobile Services
- No 5G support
The Huawei P50 Pocket follows the same concept as the Z Flip 3, using a folding screen as a way to recreate a classic clamshell phone. Huawei differs from Samsung in lack of Google apps (more on that below) and 5G, but it has a very good camera, great display and beautiful design.
As is often the case with Huawei phones, the main role is given to the camera. The images on the screen are very good and detailed without additional processing. Colors remain natural and vibrant. However, we are more impressed with the Samsung Z Flip 3’s internal screen, mainly due to the absence of a visible crease in the middle.
Unfortunately, this foldable smartphone has a big problem – the lack of Google apps and access to the Play Store. If you need Google Docs, Gmail, and other large apps, this is not for you.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G
Legacy affordable foldable smartphone 80)
Additional screen size: 1, 1″ (300 x 112)
CPU: Snapdragon 865 Plus
RAM/Storage: 8 GB / 256 GB
Open Size: 168 x 74 x 7 mm
Closed size: 86x74x15-17 mm
Weight: 183 g
Pros
- Compact design
- Flex mode support
- 9 0006 5G connectivity
Cons
- Battery life
If Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a workhorse, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is all about style. Samsung has reimagined the flip phone design that was popular almost two decades ago with a foldable screen. The result is a compact device that fits comfortably in your pocket, expandable to a 6.7-inch screen when opened.
This phone is definitely worth your attention. Even before the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Z Flip introduced us to Flex mode and the ability to access different parts of an app in a split screen. The small external screen might not be as useful as the full-cover display on the Fold, but it can flash notifications and even act as a viewfinder when you’re taking a selfie and don’t want to open your phone.
We met the original Galaxy Z Flip, and shortly after that, Samsung released a 5G version powered by the Snapdragon 865 Plus processor. (The original Flip used the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset.) Other than that and some improvements to multitasking features, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is essentially the same phone as the Z Flip we tested.
Samsung has dropped the price of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, making it one of the most affordable foldable phones around. As with the Galaxy Z Fold, the new version of the Galaxy Z Flip is expected to launch in August.

Motorola Razr 5G
Foldable blast from the past
VIEW IN Y.MARKET

Processor: Snapdragon 765G
RAM / Storage: 8 GB / 256 GB
Open size: 170x74x8 mm
Closed size: 91x74x9 mm
90 016 Weight: 190 g
Pros
- Quick View Display supports gesture control
- 5G support
Cons
- Expensive
Motorola hopes it can pull off the same trick with the Motorola Razr 5G. which Samsung has done with its Galaxy Z Fold 2. We have haven’t had a chance to check out the Razr 5G yet, but after testing the original Razr (2019), we think that Motorola has something to strive for.
The original Razr is reminiscent of the clamshell designs of yesteryear. But the build quality wasn’t impressive, the camera was disappointing, and the phone ran out of juice after just 6 hours of our battery test. Motorola appears to have addressed some of these issues with the 5G version of the Razr, which brings important design changes such as a sturdy hinge and a waterdrop display that keeps the two sides of the phone flush when closed. The external quick view screen now supports gesture control. The more powerful Snapdragon 765G processor should boost performance while adding 5G connectivity.
Will these changes help the Motorola Razr 5G justify its price? We will know for sure as soon as we test the new version.
What to look for in a foldable smartphone
Before you buy a foldable phone, you need to think about what it can offer you compared to a standard phone. If you don’t need the extra screen real estate that foldable smartphones offer, you might be better off going with a phablet or one of the best big phones we’ve tested.
However, if you really need a folding phone, don’t forget to pay attention to the design of the device. Early foldable phones like the Galaxy Fold and the original Motorola Razr had design quirks that made you think twice before buying. But with the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung has made some important changes that make the phone more resilient for everyday use. (Even then, it still isn’t waterproof—a feature that only appeared on the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3). It also makes sense to study the strength of the folding phone hinge design and find out how many cycles of opening and closing the device without damage the manufacturer guarantees.
When shopping for a foldable smartphone, consider having two screens – a larger internal display and an additional screen, usually located outside the device. Determine what you may need an external screen for – do you want to fully run applications or do you need it only for notifications and some other small functions? And does the screen support a Samsung-style continuity feature where the app you’re using on the external screen is waiting for you when you open the device?
In addition to the size, you need to make sure that the closed folding phone will be comfortable for you to carry around. Evaluate it from the point of view of a regular phone – processor, cameras and, especially, battery life. After all, a foldable phone usually has multiple screens, and battery life is wasted.
Keep in mind that foldable phones are a fairly new category in the smartphone world and we expect big changes in the segment. After the August debuts of the new versions of the Fold and Flip, Samsung is rumored to be working on a scrollable screen device called the Galaxy Scroll.
Other phone manufacturers design their own devices. Apple is rumored to be developing an iPhone Flip, though it’s unlikely to arrive this year, and the Google Pixel Fold is also presumably in development and in line for a fall debut. True, we are not so optimistic.
One model that is definitely not worth waiting for is the LG Rollable. LG promised to release it this year after the presentation at CES 2021, but the expandable screen phone has fallen victim to the closure of this direction. Although the company’s employees were able to buy several available models. Other LG dual screen devices such as the LG Wing are currently unavailable.
