Drunken Spaniards in the project of Alvaro Gomez Pidal — Bird In Flight

Alvaro Gomez Pidal, 25 years old

Born in Madrid. Psychologist by training. As a cameraman he participates in the shooting of short films and commercials. His Ethyl Nights series was shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards 2015.

This series of photographs is about how young guys drink and what happens after that. This is what happens in Madrid every weekend. Most of the pictures are from there, there are a few shots from London and Palermo. Some time ago I was idly wandering the streets looking for a picture, it got me hooked and finally something happened. I always carry a camera with me. Photos are collected slowly, but constantly.

People are sleeping on the streets tired of drinking. Someone is waiting for the night bus, someone is hugging to keep warm. Someone can no longer walk, someone drinks alone. Some people take selfies on garbage bags, a guy helps his girlfriend, who is sick. Pure chaos all around.

I have always been interested in the decay in Western society. I don’t like pretty everyday stories. I like to watch young people doing the hell out of night after night. I’m not filming drunken homeless people, I’m filming how my generation lives, and this beautiful spark of Western self-destruction. The struggle of young people through these stormy drunken nights, couples who break up in this chaos – that’s what the story is about. In the end, I want to make a book out of this project.
