Putting the “bunny ears” aside, the Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse is the most distinctive-looking antenna in our indoor antenna lineup. But it’s not just about head-turning looks: the Antennas Direct packs a lot of features and performance into this relatively small antenna.

The ClearStream Eclipse is half of a flattened Moebius strip with the option of a black or white side. As far as convenience features, it’s the best of all of the models we looked at. There’s not only the option to add a longer cable (with a coaxial port at the bottom of the antenna) but it also includes a cable in the box, unlike the similarly priced Channel Master Smartenna.

This antenna is designed to be stuck on a window and it includes a number of sticky pads in the box to help you do this. No need to buy poster putty!

When affixed to our window it performed near the top of the pack. Its greatest strength: its ability to pull in far-flung channels that the other antennas couldn’t find. It found the highest number of channels of any model in our inner-city test — 75, or five more than the Flatenna.

With signal strength it did reasonably well with five usable channels out of 11, which is the same as our budget pick, the Channel Master Flatenna.

While you could buy the amplified version for an extra $20, we found that using it didn’t actually help in our two test locations. In fact, it was much worse at bringing in channels and maintaining a watchable picture. It may help, however, if you live in a rural area, but experiment with the cheaper one first and add an amp later if you wish. As a result our recommendation is for the unamplified version, but try and buy it from Antennas Direct, as it’s currently $20 off at $40.

If you’ve shopped for an indoor antenna in the past few years you’ve likely come across the Mohu Leaf. It’s a flat square antenna you can bung up anywhere — a window, wall or the side of an entertainment unit. Its simple design has spawned a crowd of imitators which, in the case of Channel Master Flatenna 35, is able to do a similar job for a lot less. At 10 bucks, the Flatenna a no-brainer.

Despite its on-the-nose “flatizza” name, the Channel Master is actually a likable piece of equipment. It’s remarkably simple: a flexible sheet of plastic with a captive coaxial cable trailing from the bottom. The sheet itself is quite light, but add in the cable and it comes in at three ounces, while the antenna portion measures 13×9 inches.

Sadly, the coaxial cable is quite short at about six foot long, so if you need more length you’ll need to spend another $10 on a male-female coaxial extension cable or adapter.

Unlike some of the competitors, there’s no adhesives or fasteners in the box so you’ll need some poster putty to attach it to a window or wall.

Given its budget nature, it turned in a very surprising performance. It managed to outperform several of the more expensive models, including those with signal-boosting amplifiers.

It may not have pulled in the most channels in either of our two test locations (Manhattan and Long Island) but it had one of the highest number of watchable stations among our “problem channels” — five out of a possible 11. (The most any antenna managed was seven.) The Channel Master performed similarly to one of our other favorites, the Antennas Direct ClearStream Eclipse, which also got five watchable channels.

If you just want to test the over-the-air waters and don’t want to spend a lot of money, we can think of no better way to do it than with the Channel Master Flatenna 35.

2. The antenna is designed in such a way that the signal is amplified from one direction and attenuated from all others. The reception sector is usually 10-20 degrees, very good antennas can even have 5 degrees. That is, the stronger the antenna, the more accurately it must be directed to the source of the TV signal. If you need a powerful antenna, it must be long. The correct maximum length of a passive antenna is approximately 1.3 – 1.5 meters. There are antennas without an amplifier 2-2.5 meters long, but this is necessary for reception from 80-100 km. And by the way, not the fact that everything will work out. The active antenna has an amplifier. And to the gain of the antenna is added the gain of the amplifier. That is, if a passive antenna has a gain of 8 decibels, then an active one with an added amplifier of 20 decibels will have a total gain of 28 decibels. Channels are transmitted in packets in multiples of 10. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully tune the antenna to the transmission site – to the TV tower.

AMPLIFIER IS WHAT TURNS A PASSIVE ANTENNA INTO ACTIVE!

Insert the antenna plug into the input jack. But, I repeat, the active antenna must be powered. In modern antennas, 5 volt power is supplied to the television cable, to the central core. What needs to be done to supply power from the receiver to this very central core and where to get the 5 volt voltage?

It’s very simple. The antenna will be powered by the receiver (digital set-top box). This function is available in absolutely all prefixes DVB-T2. Press the Menu button on the receiver, the Menu splash screen will appear on the TV screen. You need to find the item “Antenna Power” and switch it from OFF to ON. It’s in one of the menu tabs. Scroll through them carefully, it is definitely in every tuner.

ATTENTION!!! If you are leaving for installation outside the city, where the reception is unstable and sometimes it is not even clear where the digital TV transmitter is located, you must set up the DVB-T2 receiver in advance before leaving. All 20 channels must be found in advance. This will save a lot of time, since setting up a tuner in the country with an unconfigured or incomprehensibly directed antenna is another quest. If the TV is not tuned in the city, set it up with neighbors or friends (where all similar equipment works fine), then it will become clear to you – the TV does not receive or the antenna is junk.

We make sure that the TV receives and shows everything well.

In order for the antenna to receive the signal better, it must be directed towards the TV tower. The power level and signal quality from the antenna must be controlled. To do this, on the remote control we find the button Info (INFO). Press it once, a second time, a third time.

Two lines should appear – “Signal Strength” and “Signal Quality”. By turning the antenna, moving it, you need to achieve the maximum value of these numbers. Turn – wait 5 seconds. Then turn – see how the numbers have changed. This is how the antenna is adjusted in direction. Multiplex power data can be found by pressing the INFO button. For example, check the power of the first multiplex on the first channel, the second – on the 11th channel.

4. Antenna tuning.

If the parameters are less than 40-50%, you need to look for a better reception place, put the antenna higher, buy a more powerful antenna. In our case, everything is quite decent – both the signal intensity and the quality are 90% or more.

What if instead of 20 free channels only 10 channels are shown? That is, not both multiplexes, but only one of them. And the same thing – you need to look for the best reception place, put the antenna higher, buy a more powerful antenna. The fact is that the channels are transmitted in packets in multiples of 10. Each transmitter transmits 10 channels. The power of the transmitters is usually different – and if the antenna is directed a little in the wrong direction, then only one more powerful multiplex (10 channels) is received. Channels are transmitted in packets in multiples of 10. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully tune the antenna (and put the antenna higher, for example, a room antenna – on a cabinet) at the transmission site – on a TV tower. Both multiplexes are transmitted from the same source – the TV transmitter. Therefore, if you receive only 10 channels, select any channel by pressing the “INFO” button on the remote control, display data on the level and quality of the signal. Next, achieve the maximum values ​​​​of the Level and Quality of the signal. Preferably more than 60%. Next, start searching for channels in the tuner or TV menu. And most likely, the Search will find the second multiplex.

And what to do if not 20 channels are shown, but 18, but it is digital and not analog? What’s happened? And the following happened – the software is outdated. In this case, you need to update the software of the tuner or TV. Usually this is done quite simply. But more on that another time.

Previously, there was at best only one TV transmitter for the entire region. Now the number of stations broadcasting free digital TV has increased hundreds of times. And if earlier it was 80 km from you to the transmitter, now it is most likely much less. Again. There are many digital transmitters, do not believe a neighbor who will say that he is the only one. The main idea of ​​the developers was that the antenna must be powered from the USB connector of a modern TV, this is done like this:

USB is plugged into the USB of the TV, TV father – into the TV socket of the TV, TV mother – to the antenna!

Daddysh! And in half of modern TVs, the USB connector is not powered! More precisely, it is served, but only if you insert a USB flash drive into it and select the item Watch a movie or Listen to music from USB in the TV menu. And our task is completely different, we want to watch 20 free DVB-T2 channels from the air, and not recordings from a flash drive.

What to do? And everything is simple! You need to use a mobile phone charger. Here, for example, is this. We plug the USB injector not into the TV, but into the power supply.
