When I ironed for the first time, I knew it was to be my last. I burned off a few fingertips. I stamped big horseshoe-shaped marks onto a couple of T-shirts. More sweat than steam was involved. The experience made me vow never to use an iron again, so a succession of travel-size steamers followed, mostly because the heavy-duty kind resemble Ghostbusters equipment.

But every steamer fell short of the freshly laundered, carefully starched look I love. There was always a slight crinkle to my hems and collars, and the task itself was positively Herculean. One pucker would require endless passes, along with a decent amount of arm strength and a water supply for refills. The chore was made worse by the steamers spitting out water in unpredictable rages, which meant that I often ended up scalded, thanks to my snail-like reflexes.

This is the price of wanting to be wrinkle free — or so I thought until I met the Conair Turbo. Though I was wary of trying out yet another steamer, the “Amazon’s Choice” banner and 10,000 reviews proved stronger than my reluctance. The order was already placed when I learned that it’s the same steamer Uma Thurman’s stylist, Kate Young, uses. And after testing out the Turbo for months now, I can see why it’s such a favorite: It gives you a red-carpet-immaculate finish every time.

Its steaming power rivals that of the highly efficient Jiffy-esque standing steamers I used as an Anthropologie sales associate — the benchmark by which I judge others. That’s a big feat considering the Turbo is probably smaller than the tank alone of an industrial-grade steamer. The continuous supply of steam means the Turbo can un-wrinkle just about any fabric, from fussy chiffon and wilty linen, in its 15-minute run time, which is on par with other models of a similar size. And although the steamer has “turbo” in its name, it’s relatively light and simple, with only three buttons to toggle between, including the on-off switch. But the most ingenious part of its design is the aluminum plate on top — unlike other steamers where water explodes out of holes in the head, the Turbo’s small slit lets out a steady stream of steam that’s not a burn hazard.

Even practically unsteamable items surrender to the Turbo. Though the “steam ready” button will get you far in unwrinkling most items, you can hit the eponymous “turbo” setting, which makes the Conair jolt into action, with even faster puffs of steam that leave pieces looking like they’ve just returned from the dry cleaners. It even comes with a built-in creaser (a feature seldom seen in steamers) to give pleats a sharp, professional effect.

But now, I have the solution and no excuse to look wrinkled ever again. And it takes much less effort (and personal injury) than before — now all I need to do is push the “turbo” button.

Conair ExtremeSteam Steam & Iron 2-In-1 With Turbo Review 2023

The amazon.com/Conair-ExtremeSteam-Handheld-Garment-Steamer/dp/B0935BS6DZ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa/ref=as_li_ss_tl?tag=202266-ijrri0bhy1-20&linkCode=ll1″>Conair ExtremeSteam Steam & Iron 2-In-1 With Turbo was named the overall winner in my recent testing and review of the best clothing steamers. Read on for all the ways it outperformed the other models.

The best clothing steamers are gentle on clothes, refresh creased garments quickly and save you time and space by eliminating the need for an ironing board just to remove wrinkles. After reviewing many models as part of my larger review of clothing steamers, I picked the Conair ExtremeSteam Steam & Iron 2-in-1 with Turbo as the best overall for its impressive power.

The Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Steam & Iron 2-In-1 With Turbo is a powerful workhorse to solve your … [+] clothing woes.

It works quickly and efficiently to remove wrinkles, and it can be used both vertically and horizontally when you need extra ironing oomph in a pinch. In short, this steamer is a miracle worker on just about any type of creased fabric. It will be your savior when you’re trying to refresh a pair of wool pants in a matter of minutes before work, steam a delicate dress for a big night out or de-wrinkle your child’s recital outfit that was stuffed in the back of the closet until a half-hour before showtime.

Quick, Efficient Heat

Many of us have steamers that fall woefully short of excellence. They lazily puff out lukewarm air, dribble hot water onto the floor or startlingly shoot out hot steam at random intervals. The Conair ExtremeSteam is the high-performing answer to these shortcomings. It has four steam settings illuminated on the handle of the iron, starting at low for delicate fabrics, all the way up to turbo, for things like heavier sweaters or jackets. In my testing, it heated to the high setting in just 9 seconds, which was 20 seconds faster than other steamers I tested. It put out 10 minutes of continuous steam, which allowed for steaming multiple garments without having to refill the 8.5-ounce water reservoir.

Unparalleled Wrinkle Removal

I tested the steamer on four different fabrics: silk, cotton, wool and linen. On silk, the Conair ExtremeSteam easily removed wrinkles after just one pass. This model’s hot, consistently steady steam spray didn’t spit or leave behind any water stains, which can sometimes be a problem with other steamers on silk. When tested on cotton, the strength of the steam caused wrinkles to fall away after just one or two passes, and it didn’t require any tugging or pulling of the fabric, which is typically required with cotton. With a wool fabric, this steamer made quick work of wrinkles after just two passes. And with linen, a notoriously wrinkle-prone fabric, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam impressively eliminated wrinkles on the turbo setting after just one pass.

While the steam performance of this model is unparalleled, its extra-large 5.5 x 3.25 inch aluminum soleplate allows the steamer to double as an iron—with or without steam—for extra smoothing power. “Steamers that also have an ironing plate are great for getting out stubborn wrinkles, although you’re still not going to get a hard press,” says Patric Richardson, host of The Laundry Guy on Discovery+ and author of Laundry Love: Finding Joy in a Common Chore. On both cotton and linen shirts, I was able to easily press out the collars, cuffs and deeper-set wrinkles with this steamer, eliminating the need to make a trip to the dry cleaner.

Easy To Use With No Leaking

Some steamer models require a steep learning curve with an instruction manual, but this model was easy and intuitive to use. Just note that the water reservoir pops in and out of place with some wiggling back and forth, and the inlet cover to fill the reservoir is relatively small, so it requires concentration to fill. One key standout of this model is that after the water reservoir was in place, there was no leaking at any point, which is my common complaint with other models. The four settings—low, mid, high and turbo—are clearly lit by LEDs on the model’s handle, and the steam button allows you to manually start and stop the flow of steam. One complaint about this model: At 3.1 pounds and 13 inches tall, it was the heaviest and tallest handheld I tested, and it might feel bulky in hand after just a few minutes.

Standout Safety And Convenient Bonus Accessories

While several other models I tested had an automatic shut-off feature, the Conair ExtremeSteam was unique because it has what the company calls a “smart sensor” safety feature. This means that, when activated, you can put the steamer down on a flat surface and it immediately stops the flow of steam. This prevents possible burns from steam, and it halts steam from flowing when it’s not being used, which ultimately means you won’t have to refill the water reservoir prematurely.

Molly Calhoun

The Conair ExtremeSteam comes with four additional accessories, including a delicates bonnet to protect fine fabrics, a silicone band intended to pull fabric taut for optimal results, a bristle brush to loosen fibers and allow steam to penetrate and a creaser attachment for creating sharp, precise creases. While these attachments were easy to put on and remove, I found I didn’t need them to remove wrinkles on the fabrics I tested.

How Does It Compare?

Compared to the best value steamer, the Electrolux Portable Handheld Garment Steamer, this Conair ExtremeSteam model heats faster, works more quickly due to strong steam and has more steam settings. The Electrolux model is still effective at de-wrinkling, though, and at an accessible price point. It also excelled with a longer continuous steam time, at 15 minutes—compared to this Conair model’s 10-minute continuous steam time—which allows for steaming more garments at once.

My Expertise

I’ve had extensive experience using steamers over many years. I’ve steamed countless garments on magazine photo shoots, and I’ve steamed everything from high-waisted wool pants to belted cotton shirtdresses for days at work. As a mom, I’ve steamed my children’s holiday outfits and recital outfits. And as a homeowner, I’ve steamed couch slipcovers, draperies and even smelly fabric chairs to remove odors. Throughout it all, I’ve made my fair share of mistakes, from forgetting to descale my machines to over-steaming delicate silks and causing staining. During testing, I spent several hours with this Conair steamer, repeatedly testing each fabric. And for this story I didn’t rely on my steam experience alone; I went to the best of the best to get their insight and tips on steaming clothing. I spoke to both Richardson and Jerry Pozniak, owner of fine dry cleaner Jeeves New York.

How I Tested The Best Clothing Steamer Overall

To test this model, I began by gauging how easy it was to set up and fill the steamer. I then tested it on four pre-wrinkled items of clothing: a cotton button-down shirt, a thin-weave wool sweater, a silk jumpsuit and a linen shirt. Next, I measured how long it took for the model to heat up and begin producing a steady steam flow. I measured the duration of continuous steam from a single, fully filled tank of water. I tested if the model could be used horizontally and vertically without spitting steam, leaking water or leaving behind mineral deposits or stains on fabrics.

Should I Buy A Handheld, Upright Or Travel Steamer?

Ultimately, the style you choose will come down to how much space you have and whether you want to use your steamer for travel. If you have a smaller living space, you will likely want to opt for a handheld steamer as opposed to an upright model. “Handhelds are really convenient,” says Pozniak. “You can steam out at least three garments, and they’re super easy to refill.” If you have a laundry room and want more of a steaming station, you might enjoy the convenience of an upright steamer because they have bigger water tanks that don’t have to be refilled as often. If you travel regularly and like to refresh clothing when you arrive at your destination, a small, lightweight travel steamer is nice to have.

What’s The Best Way To Clean My Clothing Steamer?

Removing mineral deposits is critical to extending the life of your steamer and preventing chalky white mineral buildup and the spitting of water. “To clean a steamer, you can use a vinegar and water mixture,” says Richardson. First, fill the tank with equal parts distilled white vinegar and water, and then run the machine until the mixture is expelled. Afterward, run a full cycle through the machine with distilled water. Alternatively, Richardson also recommends using a descaling agent.
