Charge your Surface using the power supply that was designed for your Surface or using a USB Type-C PD charger (for Surface devices that have a USB-C port).
For Surface devices that have a USB-C port, you can choose to charge your device using that with a USB Type-C PD charger. If you choose to do so, keep these things in mind:
For best performance, we recommend using a USB-C PD charger that provides at least the same wattage as the power supply that was designed for your Surface.
If you connect a lower-voltage charger or a USB-A charger with a USB-A-to-USB-C cable, your device may charge slowly. It won’t use Fast Charging. Please connect a recommended charger instead.
If the battery is drained, and the charger you’re using is 60W or higher, your Surface will instantly turn on when you plug it in. If you’re using a charger that uses less than 60W, your Surface must charge to 10% before it will turn on.
You can’t charge your Surface with a Surface Connect charger and USB-C charger at the same time. If both are connected, your Surface will only charge from the Surface Connect charger.
Surface Studio 2 has a USB-C port and Surface Studio 2+ has 3 USB-C ports, but they don’t receive inbound power through USB-C. You should use the AC power cord that came with your Surface Studio 2 or Surface Studio 2+ for power.
If your device has a USB-C port, it can also support Fast Charging. Some Microsoft Surface devices support Fast Charging, so you can spend less time charging your device and more time using it on the go. With Fast Charging, you can charge your battery up to 80% in about an hour on most devices.
Fast Charging requires two main things:
Enough power. Use the Microsoft Surface power supply that was designed for your Surface device. If you’re using a USB Type-C PD charger, it needs to provide at least the same wattage as the power supply that was designed for your Surface. For more info about Surface power supplies, see Surface power supplies and charging requirements.
Proper temperature range for charging. Temperature between 25C (77F) and 35C (95F).
For Surface Go, Surface Go 2, Surface Go 3, and Surface Laptop SE, you’ll need to buy a different power supply or USB Type-C PD charger rated at 60W or higher.
If you have a Surface Dock and use the 90W power adapter that came with it, Fast Charging can be used when you connect your dock to your Surface.

Chargers. Types and features. Charging Methods
Chargers are current correcting devices that change its parameters to the optimum for charging batteries from external power sources. Most often they are used to convert electricity from a 220 or 380V AC network into direct current. They are used to charge the batteries of cars and special equipment, laptops, phones, tablets, power tools.
The operation of chargers can differ significantly depending on their purpose, as well as the actual voltage parameters that need to be obtained for a particular battery.
In the classical scheme of the device there are:
- Voltage converter.
- Current stabilizer.
- Charge controller.
- Indicator light.
The voltage converter is responsible for changing the input voltage. It can be used as a step-down transformer. After the converter in the charger, there is a rectifier, whose task is to convert AC to DC, which is optimal for charging the battery. Further, the current stabilization is performed in the system.
The charger has a charge controller. It detects the state of charge of the battery and turns off the power when it is full. To determine the mode in which the charger is currently operating, a light indicator is used. Usually LEDs are put in its quality. When power is supplied from the charger to the battery, the indicator glows red. When charging is complete, the green LED lights up.
The principle of operation of the vast majority of chargers is the same. The electricity supplied to the device is adjusted to the required level of current and voltage, calculated for a specific type of battery. That is why it is not allowed to use one charger for batteries of different capacities and other parameters.
Why is the battery charging? It greatly exceeds the actual potential difference between the built-in cathode and anode of the battery. In addition, the voltage is directed unipolarly with them. As a result of the impact, the direction of the current in the battery changes. It moves from the positive electrode to the negative one. As a result, a reduction reaction is observed inside the battery, which results in the accumulation of charged electrons.
Differences of chargers by charging method
Battery chargers are divided by charging method into three categories:
- Constant current.
- Constant voltage.
- Mixed type.
DC battery chargers are the fastest in terms of charge recovery. However, the use of this technology for the accumulation of charged electrons leads to faster wear of the batteries. Devices of this type provide a constant current. In this case, the current strength should not exceed a tenth of the nominal capacity of the battery. To ensure such a constant current strength at the same level, such chargers are equipped with regulators.
Chargers operating on the principle of constant voltage charge the battery much longer. The degree of battery charge when using this method depends on the value of the specified voltage. In the process of charging, the current decreases, and the voltage at the battery terminals approaches the voltage of the charger. In this regard, the device technically cannot restore the battery charge to 100%.
Mixed charge chargers automatically switch off after the battery is fully charged. For motorists, this is especially convenient, since such memory does not need to be monitored. Such chargers use a pulsating or asymmetric current for charging. This reduces plate sulfation and extends battery life as well as increasing battery capacity.
Types of chargers
Battery chargers are classified according to how they are used. According to this criterion, they are:
External devices are individual devices that interface between the power source and the battery. Built-in devices are located directly in the body of the powered device. In this case, a simple network cable is used to connect to external energy sources. Often, built-in chargers can be found in rechargeable flashlights, budget hair clippers.
In addition, the battery charger can be classified according to its functional features. For example, by the presence of a charge indicator, a pre-discharge function to restore battery capacity.
Depending on the compatible power source, chargers are also classified into the following types:
The most common are network devices . They are designed to be connected to standard 220V or 380V networks. The devices convert alternating electric current to the optimal parameters necessary for accumulating battery energy. These are easy to use devices. However, to ensure their operation, access to the electrical network is required.
Cordless instruments have their own energy storage in their housing. Thanks to this, they are able to charge a third-party battery away from the network, transferring its own supply of energy to it. These are mobile devices primarily intended for use on the road. They are also used as a backup drive that allows you to recharge various equipment in the absence of access to the electrical network.
Car chargers are designed to be connected via the cigarette lighter to the on-board network of a car or other special equipment. The device converts the DC voltage of 12 or 24 V from the on-board network into the required voltage for a particular battery. Most often they are used to recharge mobile phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, camcorders. As a source of energy, they can use the charge of the car’s battery or the electricity generated by the generator.
Wireless devices are distinguished by the absence of a connecting cable between the battery and the device itself. They are a platform equipped with an induction coil. A compatible device is placed on top of it, which receives the transmitted energy wirelessly. Thus, there is no direct physical visible contact between the battery and the source.

What are pulse and transformer chargers? This directly affects the charging speed and the safety of the battery itself.
Conventional transformer chargers are devices with a relatively large weight and dimensions. The transformer in such devices is supplemented with a diode bridge for rectifying electric current. Transformer chargers are not as convenient in operation as opposed to pulse ones. Also, their efficiency is less than that of impulse ones, but nevertheless they are quite effective. In the automotive sector, the pulse option is actively replacing transformer devices, but in industry, transformer chargers are still relevant.
In the pulse chargers, the transformer has a smaller size, which makes it possible to lighten and reduce the entire structure. They are equipped with automation and a variety of protective mechanisms. The input alternating voltage in such devices is converted into a constant voltage with a limitation of the ripple amplitude. When overloaded, a pulsed charger can burn out, while a transformer one remains in service. Pulse devices for charging car batteries are much easier to use, the device shows whether the terminals are connected correctly, etc. Also, such a charger is more economical in terms of power consumption and is distinguished by its lower price compared to transformer counterparts.
What is a starter charger
When a car battery is depleted, the starter cannot start the engine until enough energy is stored in the battery.
With traditional charging, this can take several hours. To solve this problem, launchers have been developed. That is, with a discharged battery, you do not need to charge it first to start the engine.

- Pulse. Differ in compactness. The device includes an inverter for converting electric current and a mechanism for emergency shutdown in the event that a short circuit occurs. Such models are more often used for domestic purposes for charging car batteries and household appliances.
In addition, chargers are usually classified according to their operating speed . Taking into account this criterion, the following types are distinguished:
- Accelerated, charging in 1-3 hours. It should be noted that not every battery can be charged using devices of this type. The faster models are most suitable for nickel-cadmium batteries, while the lead-acid variety takes longer to fully charge. In this type of device, it is fundamentally important to determine the end time of charging.
- Slow devices require 14 to 24 hours to fully charge. Such devices may turn out to be less efficient, since part of the energy during charging is converted into heat and dissipated. For slow devices, it is not so important to determine the charging time, since an extra 1-2 hours at low current will not entail serious consequences.
- Conditioning models are the most preferred type, as they can significantly increase the life of nickel-cadmium batteries.
These devices are designed to charge small household appliances. They are equipped with an electronic timer that can operate for 4 hours in fast charge mode. During such a period, almost any discharged battery is gaining its capacity.
After this time, the device switches to pulse charging mode. Energy is supplied to the output elements of the device to maintain the charge level.
The advantages of such models are as follows:
- Low cost.
- Technical simplicity.
- Ease of use.
Usually manufacturers set the timer based on the fact that the battery is completely discharged. If it was partially discharged, then there is a risk of damage to the battery by excess current. This feature does not apply to branded batteries of mobile phones, tablets and other digital equipment, unless they are charged using universal devices.
Types of chargers with microprocessors are considered the most advanced in their range. They do not allow recharging the battery, so they can be used to work with any devices, even if they are not completely discharged, but partially. The disadvantages of such models include a very high price.
It is highly undesirable to replace a branded device from a telephone or PDA with a universal device, since they may have differences in the structure of electrical connectors.
