Intel banned owners of its new processors from watching licensed movies from discs in 4K

Intel has removed support for SGX technology from 11 and 12 generation Core processors. Now machines based on these chips will not be able to play Blu-ray discs in 4K resolution. Owners of systems used to view such discs on older processors are advised not to update Wiindows so that SGX is not blocked through the next driver or firmware update.
Life without Blu-ray Ultra HD
Intel has dropped support for the SGX extension on its 11 (Rocket Lake) and 12 (Alder Lake) generation desktop processors due to security concerns. One of the not quite obvious consequences of such a decision, according to Bleeping Computer, was the impossibility of playing on a PC with chips of these families of Blu-ray video discs in 4K resolution (Ultra HD, UHD).
All UHD Blu-ray discs requested by the BDA are DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected. To play such discs, the target system must support a number of technologies: Advanced Access Content System (AACS), High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) version 2.2, Intel SGX (Software Guard Extensions).
Intel SGX technology provides hardware-based data encryption by isolating application code and data in a protected memory area (enclave). Intel SGX allows these enclaves to be protected from elevated system processes.
When SGX support disappeared
Bleeping Computer has noticed that on the processor specifications page for the latest Intel Alder Lake processor family released in October 2021, Intel SGX technology is listed as Deprecated and no longer supported. The situation is similar with 11th generation Intel processors.
Intel Software Guard Extensions is listed as a deprecated technology
Thus, to date, viewing Ultra HD Blu-ray discs without using a specialized hardware player is available to owners of machines based on Intel Core 7000, 8000, 9000 and 10000 processors. 6000 series chips are not suitable because they do not support HDCP 2.2 technology. The processors of AMD, which traditionally competes with Intel, have never supported SGX, and therefore they are not suitable as the basis of a platform for playing Blu-ray Ultra HD.
The SGX extension has been present in Intel processors since the Skylake family (sixth generation), which was released in 2016. At the beginning of the same year, the first Blu-ray Ultra HD movie CDs appeared on the market with 3840×2160 pixels at 60 frames in give me a sec. It is noteworthy that the new type of Blu-ray discs did not have regional restrictions, unlike regular Blu-ray (1080p) and DVD (480p).
Reason for abandoning technology
According to journalists from Bleeping Computer, Intel’s refusal to further support SGX in desktop processors is associated with the identification of a large number of vulnerabilities, one way or another related to this technology. CNews wrote about one of them, called LVI (Load Value Injection), in March 2020.
LVI allows attackers, under certain conditions, to change the normal execution of programs in order to output data that, in theory, should be securely stored in SGX enclaves. Such information may include passwords, private keys, or security certificates.
Notably, third-generation Intel Xeon Scalabale server processors, released in 2021, support SGX technology.
CyberLink Recommendations
Software company CyberLink has added to the list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) on its website in connection with the problem of further support for Blu-ray Ultra HD by the popular video player PowerDVD, which it is developing. Strictly speaking, CyberLink has admitted its helplessness – the company cannot do anything to preserve the Blu-ray Ultra HD playback function in PowerDVD for objective reasons.
CyberLink recommends using processors that still support SGX and not upgrading to the Windows 11 operating system, as future updates may eventually block SGX support at the chip driver or firmware level.
Who needs Blu-ray discs in 2022
Despite the recent sharp increase in the popularity of streaming services that allow you to watch movies, series and recordings of music concerts over the Internet, including in 4K quality, the method of distributing content on physical media in general and on Blu-ray discs in particular , can hardly be considered dead.
Blu-ray and DVD discs are still in demand among collectors and people who do not want to make themselves dependent on the availability of an Internet connection and the presence of a subscription to streaming services, as well as the relationship of the platform with copyright holders.
AI startup: how to use the “giants” and not become their victim
CNews Analytics
According to Business Insider, connoisseurs who still buy physical copies of movies note that the quality of video content on Blu-ray Ultra HD is significantly better than the picture offered by Internet sites in 4K resolution, due to the higher bitrate.
Although demand for physical media is declining, major film studios continue to release their films on Blu-ray after theatrical release. So, according to the results of 2021, the three most popular films are Wonder Woman 1984 (“Wonder Woman 1984”), The Croods: A New Age (“The Croods: Housewarming”) and Godzilla vs Kong (“Godzilla vs. Kong”), released on Blu-ray, brought to the copyright holders a total of almost $ 52 million (over 2 million physical copies) in the US alone.
A year earlier, the second part of the animated film Frozen (“Frozen”) became a bestseller, which sold almost 2.4 million copies in the United States and brought about $52 million to the creators.
