CDs. Working on laptop

CDs

I’ll start with cheap and common media – CDs. For almost 30 years of their history, they have firmly entered our everyday life and are now used everywhere. Not surprisingly, most computers are equipped with an optical drive. As for laptops, only the smallest of them cannot read and write discs, but the manufacturer sometimes ships an external drive with them.

Optical drive available in area Removable media devices windows My computer (see Figure 11. 1). If you connect an external drive (detailed in Chapter 4), it will be displayed there as well.

The main feature of CDs is that they can contain a special program called Autorun. Its purpose is to simplify access to data on the disk. For example, if you insert a game disc, then most likely a program will appear through which you can start installing the game, launch the game itself, uninstall it, open the web page of the game and its developer company. Almost the same opportunities will be provided to you by Autorun of a disk with programs. The content of music and video discs is played in standard players. In general, everything is done for your convenience.

If Autorun is not written to disk, then Windows XP opens its own window, which can slightly simplify viewing the contents of the media (Fig. 12.1).

Fig. 12.1. Standard Windows Autorun

In most cases, the following options are available.

1. Play – playback of removable media contents in Windows Media Player (read more about it in chapter 22).

2. Image printing – if any pictures are recorded on the disk in common formats, then when this item is selected, Photo Print Wizard will be launched, through which they can be output to the printer.

3. Viewing drawings in slide show mode – almost the same as the previous paragraph, only you will not print the drawings, but view them in a special program.

4. Copy images to this computer – launches a wizard to copy all images from media to the computer’s hard drive.

5. Open folder to view files – a window Explorer will open, where the root directory of the inserted disk will be loaded (in fact, this action is similar to entering the folder My computer and double-clicking on the CD icon) .

6. Do nothing – The Windows Autorun window will close.

In general, points 2-4 are more suitable for cameras, the work with which will be discussed in Chap. 15.

The fact is that the window is universal for all external media connected or inserted into the laptop (which can also be digital cameras), so these items are also present when working with a CD.

Before moving on to flash-memory, I will note a few nuances when working with disks. If in Explorer you double-click on the optical drive icon when there is no disk in it, it will open, but inside it will be empty (Fig. 12.2).

Fig. 12.2. Optical drive folder with missing disc

In general, all functions in the panel on the left will be available, but some of them are intended for future recording of files to disk. Files are written to a CD differently than they are written to a flash card or hard drive. Read more about this process in Chap. 21.

Do not forget that before you remove the disk from the drive, you should make sure that it is not used anywhere. For example, if you press the tray open button while copying files, the operating system will display a copy error message; if you watched a movie from a disc or listened to music, then their playback will stop, etc. It is unlikely that you will seriously harm your computer by such actions, but it is better not to risk it again.
