Yes, electric cars can be very quiet, but go for one with a Bose sound system and they can also be quite loud. High-spec Tekna models currently come with seven Bose speakers as standard. The Leaf is good to drive, spacious enough for a family to use as its sole car and includes equipment such as a touchscreen media system across the range.
There are two battery and electric motor combinations available, with the more expensive ‘e+’ version claiming a maximum range of 239 miles per charge – that’s 71 miles more than the standard model. Nissan’s ‘e-Pedal’ feature allows you to mostly drive the car using just one pedal, with the car slowing quickly as soon as you lift off the throttle, adding charge back to the battery in the process.

If you’re looking for a practical and easy-to-drive five-seat SUV, you should be well-served by the Renault Kadjar. The Kadjar is based on the popular Nissan Qashqai and as a result, is very similar to drive – it’s comfortable and relaxing. There is no shortage of Nissan Jukes with Bose speakers, as it has been on sale for more than 10 years and has been offered with a Bose system for much of that. When the second-generation Juke was launched in 2019 the option of Bose speakers remained. If you’re considering the pre-2019 version, look out for a Bose Personal Edition model. With the current version, look for Tekna and Tekna+ specifications to get Bose speakers.
The Juke isn’t as sharp to drive as shorter cars, such as the Ford Fiesta, but it is comfy and easy to drive. Both generations of Juke look striking which is good for those who want to be seen as well as heard. While diesel engines are available on older models, Nissan now only offers petrol engines. The purpose of an automobile suspension is to provide comfort and constant traction. The purpose of an outstanding automotive suspension is to provide unparalleled comfort by completely isolating the body from what is under the wheels. Who could create such a pendant? Germans? Japanese? No, it was created by the Americans – and not from Ford or GM, but from a company that generally produces not cars, but audio equipment – Bose.
Bose is not a brand, but a person
Like many revolutionary things in the world, the technology of a radically new car suspension owes its appearance to a man who was determined enough to deny the impossible. His name is Amar Bose.
If you think something is impossible, don’t interfere with the person who is working on it.
Amar Bose, 1929-2013
An American of Indian origin, he himself carried a lot of revolutionary things: his father in his youth was at the forefront of the struggle of Indian revolutionaries with the British colonialists. Amar was more fortunate: he was born after his father moved to the USA, but the spirit of innovation and the desire to expand the boundaries of the possible were inherited by him, embodied in his self-realization in technology.
As an avid music lover, he devoted himself to acoustics and audio engineering. But like any diversified person, he did not limit himself only to her: cars were another hobby of Amar. However, unlike most, who were attracted by power, speed and design, Bowes appreciated something else in them: comfort. Six years before founding his own company, which was destined to become one of the best manufacturers of top-end acoustics, Amar purchased a Pontiac Bonneville with an Ever-Level Air Ride suspension, where air springs were used instead of springs. Was he satisfied with her? The answer may be that 10 years later he changed Pontiac to Citroen DS, whose hydropneumatic suspension was a real work of art. But judging by what happened next, Bowes had his own opinion on this matter.

In 1980, already the owner of his own company, the professor single-handedly began to develop a completely new type of automotive suspension, using his experience and knowledge in a completely disparate field. first look at the field of audio engineering. But if you look closely, you can see something in common: vibrations, waves, energy transfer … By projecting and scaling them from a dynamic radiator to a suspension, Bose created a design that anticipated the advent of noise cancellation systems – only in the automotive sense.
Technological magic
The suspension, designed by the professor, literally “suppressed” vibrations coming from outside. Convinced that the idea was viable, three years after the start of his research, Bowes brought in a separate team to work on it, but carefully classified the development. The division occupied by her was named “Project Sound” in order not to disseminate information not only outside, but also within the company itself. What is the invention of Bose, and what is revolutionary in it?
The design is based on a linear electric motor fed by amplifiers and controlled by a microprocessor based system. The electric motor performs the functions of a shock absorber: it “compresses” and “unclenches”, but it does it many times faster than a conventional shock absorber with a spring, changing its length in milliseconds. It is this “lag” in the traditional suspension that does not allow it to provide absolute peace of the body: its moves and response speed are limited by physics, and at a certain moment, compression or expansion of the suspension does not allow compensating for the size of the overcome unevenness, transferring residual vibrations further to the body. Linear electric motors with lightning-fast response completely solved this problem, precisely repeating the roughness of the surface and transmitting absolutely nothing further. The range of movement of the electric motors was 20 centimeters – this was the limit of complete comfort, within which the body remained motionless.

And this was not the only advantage of electric motors. Of course, such a complex and powerful electronic system, carrying a large load in the form of a car, required appropriate power. However, this feature was largely compensated by the operation of the motors: they had a regenerative function, returning back to the amplifiers part of the energy expended in compression cycles. According to Bose, such a scheme made it possible to provide power consumption at a level three times less than that of a standard car air conditioning system.

But that’s not all! Firstly, the design of the suspension provided for damping not only large, but also the smallest irregularities that manifest themselves at the level of vibrations. To do this, the hub nodes had their own built-in dampers that suppress micro-oscillations. And secondly, the software package provided an ideally stable position of the car body not only on bumps, but also when maneuvering, completely eliminating lateral buildup in turns and longitudinal during acceleration and braking. The “iron” basis of the suspension was made up of torsion bars, which, however, actually performed only a supporting function for the body, leaving all the real work to the Bose system.
For the first time, the suspension can be the same for both a sports car and a luxury car.

Work on the revolutionary suspension continued for a long 24 years: Bose declassified his offspring only in 2004, presenting it to the general public, but without even allowing journalists to try it out. But even without this, the presentation produced a stunning effect: it was real technological magic, all the reviews and stories about which boiled down to the main thing – that “the body remained absolutely motionless in an incredible way while the wheels worked out all the bumps.” Test prototypes were two sedans Lexus LS 400 , one of which was left in the factory version, and the other is equipped with a complex from Bose. And this complex, controlled then, in 2004, by a 750 MHz Pentium-III, operating at a quarter of its capacity, was a real quintessence of the essence of an automobile suspension.

By the way, being software-controlled, the suspension from Bose made it possible to make changes to its operation algorithms and create algorithms for various driving modes. Bose, for example, abandoned what Mercedes-Benz has come to these days with its Magic Body Control suspension – the tilt of the car body in corners, although such algorithms have been developed and tested. Tests carried out to that point showed that such “motorcycle” behavior was too unusual and unexpected for passengers, and some drivers in high-speed corners, on the contrary, overestimated the capabilities of the car, provoking dangerous situations.
One of the journalists who attended the presentation of the Bose suspension described his first impressions of this technology.
We were first taken to the hangar, where two cars were mounted side by side on shakers with four separate legs, one per wheel.
Each of the supports could be raised and lowered in different ranges of movement and speed, simulating the roughness of the road. But, not satisfied with the existing road simulation software technology, Bose developed its own. Having driven a circle along a real road, replete with bumps, potholes and pits, the engineers programmatically transferred it to the stands. In addition, they have developed a mode that mimics the factory suspension for a car equipped with Bose suspension, with the ability to switch between it and Bose’s signature mode at the touch of a button.
The two of us got into the cars and the engineers started the shakers. First, the car with Bose suspension was put into factory suspension mode, and we felt vibrations, although not strong, and the swaying of the car could be observed in the mirrors located on the outside of the car for clarity. The other LS 400, without the Bose suspension, oscillated in exactly the same way – we were “moving” along the same road.
The engineer then turned the Bose suspension back into its normal mode with the press of a button—the difference was stunning. It was clear in the mirrors outside that the wheels continued to move up and down in time with the wheels of the standard car next to us, but the body remained so still that you could drink coffee in the cabin without spilling a drop.

You can and should see the rest of the presentation, meticulously crafted by Bose. The car overcomes bumps, enters turns, accelerates and brakes – and all this without the slightest vibration of the body. The final chord of this show was a stunt in which a car with Bose suspension easily and smoothly jumps over a wooden plank imitating an obstacle, and then bows along with the driver who got out of the car. This part, of course, was just a demonstration of the possibilities: the engineers did not plan such an option in a serial implementation. But this jump made a good impression on the audience, starting in 2004 – after all, such presentations at Bose were held not only for journalists, but also for potential partners who might be interested in their technology.
Too bold for the market
But the situation with potential partners was not as bright as with development and practical implementation. Of course, Bose saw major manufacturers of luxury cars, both sports and executive, as the main target consumers of their technology in Bose. Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes, Honda and others were interested in using the new suspension in their cars. Everyone who has personally experienced the invention of Bose, invariably said that this is the best suspension that he has ever seen. But when it came to numbers, everyone closed their folders with a mine of regret and went home to “think over” an offer that no one dared to accept.
I have no doubt that this technology can be successful in the market. But it takes a company that’s interested in more than design and horsepower.

In addition to complicating the vehicle’s electrical wiring, at the time of development, the cost of some components was very high, complicating mass production and increasing the cost of the final product. For example, in addition to the microprocessor, the “bottleneck” was powerful neodymium magnets, the material for the production of which was expensive. But this was not the main problem: Professor Bose was absolutely right in predicting that in the future the cost of these components would fall to an acceptable level.
But it was not so easy to rid the system of two other shortcomings, and the first of them was the mass of the structure. The target weight increase for the car, according to engineers, was 90 kilograms – that’s how much, almost a centner, the suspension of a car with a Bose system should have added compared to a conventional one. Of course, here the growth of unsprung weight did not have any negative impact on the ride and stability of the car – on the contrary, these figures grew to unprecedented heights. But there was no way to exclude the deterioration of dynamics and the increase in fuel consumption from the equation – and against the backdrop of already tightening environmental standards and requirements for reducing fuel consumption, this was quite important. Well, and the introduction of a suspension from a third-party manufacturer without extensive testing, including resource tests, of course, not a single auto brand could afford. The integration of the Bose system meant quite a significant investment, which, if successful, turned into a unique competitive advantage, but if it failed, could not pay off in any way.
Time passed, but the unique technology remained in the status of “promising, but difficult to implement”. Experts promised her market success either in the new flagship Cadillac, or in the Audi A8, and some even believed that the brave French would see the future in her, replacing their Hydractive with a fundamentally new and more efficient scheme. However, to this day, no agreement has been concluded with automakers. Bose developments have found their serial embodiment in another product – seats with shock absorption system Bose Ride, addressed to professional truck drivers. But the suspension did not go further than the “break-in” Lexus LS 400 . ..
From revolution to evolution
In 2013, the father of the idea of electromagnetic suspension, Professor Amar Bose, who most believed in the success of his offspring, died. But success never came to him, and at the end of 2017, Bose announced the sale of their developments to the young company ClearMotion. But the sale did not signal a revival of technology under a new name: ClearMorion’s current course is to develop a suspension that retains the classic design with elastic elements in the form of springs and dampers. It focuses on the electronically controlled Activalve electro-hydraulic module, which is an external element of the shock absorber and allows you to speed up the response of the hydraulic system to roadway defects: the shock absorber is compressed and decompressed faster with it.
ClearMotion
Further development of the system involves the collection and analysis of data on the relief of the roadway, their global accumulation in cloud storage and further use to “predict” the behavior of the suspension. Sounds revolutionary – but revolutionary in a modern way, with a touch of startups, crowdfunding and Silicon Valley. And the design turns out to be much more complicated than what Professor Amar Bowes proposed almost 30 years ago.
