Since its origins in the 1970s with Spasim and Maze War, the first-person shooter genre has become a cornerstone of the gaming industry. One of the genre’s many strengths is that it works well as both a single-player experience, exemplified by titles like Half-Life and Bioshock, as it does a multiplayer experience, as shown by the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises.

The improved hardware of the Xbox One allowed developers to create incredibly immersive games that accomplished what the FPS genre does best: make the player feel as though they’re in the heart of the action.

So much so, that it’s hard to believe that the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 5’s release dates were under three decades apart, given how far gaming technology has come. The pace that the gaming industry progresses means that many genres come and go, as improvements in hardware can elevate them or cripple their popularity.

One genre that has consistently thrived for decades is the first-person shooter genre. FPS games have filled store shelves and topped sales charts since the original DOOM spiked the genre’s popularity, and they haven’t looked back since. For those looking for some more of the best first-person-shooters on Xbox One to play, we’ve updated this list to include a few more entries.

20 Prey (84)

Following the success of 2006’s Prey, Bethesda and Human Head Studios began working on Prey 2. However, this game sadly fell into the depths of development hell and was eventually canceled in 2014. Instead of letting the IP die, Bethesda teamed up with Arkane Studios – a French company known for the Dishonored series – and began working on a reimagining of the 2006 game with an entirely new narrative, which was released in 2017.

Prey draws players in with its memorable opening, which immediately unnerves the player with a sense of foreboding before bursting into life. The game struggles to reach the heights of its opening again, but it’s still a fantastic, adrenaline-pumping first-person shooter that anyone subscribed to Game Pass should try.

19 Halo 5: Guardians (84)

Whenever Xbox’s flagship series releases a new title, the gaming industry stops and takes notice. Halo 5: Guardians was released in October 2015 and had the tough task of continuing the series’ high quality.

Although Halo 5: Guardians isn’t considered to be among the franchise’s best releases, it’s still a solid FPS game and one that is worthy of the Halo branding with its excellent multiplayer and enjoyable co-op. The game is somewhat let down by its lackluster story, though many players were able to overlook this and focus on the game’s strengths.

18 Metro Redux (84)

Metro Redux is a collection that includes the definitive versions of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. The pair of games are set in a post-apocalyptic Russia, following a nuclear war that lay waste to the world and killed billions of people. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t provide much hope for the devastated Earth, as the survivors must contend with dangerous mutants and uninhabitable air.

As the name suggests, both games predominantly take place in Moscow’s underground Metro, though players must occasionally risk the conditions on the surface. Metro Redux‘s post-apocalyptic setting is what makes it stand out, as the development team, 4A Games, did a fantastic job of creating bleak, eerie environments that will stick in players’ heads long after they’re finished playing.

17 PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (85)

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is unique in the sense that players can choose between first-person and third-person perspectives.

PUBG Studios’ release was one of the most influential titles of its decade, as it was the spark that ignited the rise of the battle royale genre, which exploded in popularity during the late-2010s. Although Epic Games’ Fortnitestole much of its thunder, PUBG is still one of the most actively played shooters today, largely thanks to how addictive it is to try to be the last player standing.

16 BioShock: The Collection (85)

A collection that includes two of the most critically acclaimed titles from the seventh generation of home consoles is always likely to perform well on Metacritic. BioShock: The Collection was released in 2016 and supplemented its impressive trilogy of games by including remastered iterations of BioShock and BioShock 2. It also offered the series’ DLCs such as BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea Episode 1 and Episode 2.

BioShock: The Collection also adds a director’s commentary, enticing pre-existing fans to play through the games once more.

15 Halo: The Master Chief Collection (85)

From one collection to another, Halo: The Master Chief Collection offers incredible value to players. It implements every first-person Halo title aside from Halo 5: Guardians. Moreover, the collection includes the high-definition remakes of classic titles like Halo: Combat Evolved, which let players seamlessly switch between the old and new visuals with the press of a button.

Considering the quality of the games included, the collection’s 85 Metascore may seem somewhat low. However, these games suffered from online and matchmaking issues at launch, hampering the score.

14 Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (85)

The fifteenth installment into the iconic Call of Duty franchise was released in 2018 by Activation, with development from Treyarch who had help from Beenox and Raven Software. The game’s creators made the decisive decision not to include a traditional single-player campaign. The Solo Missions mode replaced it instead.

Modern Call of Duty games usually meets with high scrutiny and criticism from the gaming community. However, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4received the Fan Favorite Shooter Game award at the 2018 Gamers’ Choice Awards.

13 Titanfall (86)

The original Titanfall may have been overshadowed by the release of Titanfall 2 (more on that later). However, the 2014 game still offers plenty of entertainment today for those that can find an active lobby.

Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment made the controversial decision of not including any form of single-player campaign in Titanfall, which was a rarity at the time. The lack of single-player and local split-screen multiplayer disappointed gamers; however, the concept of throwing Titans into the mix of an online battlefield intrigued fans and critics. The game had some issues, though the interesting ideas and fast-paced gameplay made it an enjoyable experiment that set a strong foundation for the excellent sequel.

12 Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (86)

In regards to the main series of Resident Evil games, it seems that Capcom wants to differentiate the titles into groups of three. The first three games utilized fixed camera angles and implemented numerous puzzles. The next three titles offered players more action-heavy gameplay. Now it seems that the series is set to provide an Outlast and Amnesia-inspired first-person survival horror experience.

Resident Evil certainly doesn’t have the same gun-blazing action as some of the other titles on this list, as it instead requires players to use their ammo extremely sparingly and rely on their wits to survive.

11 Halo Infinite (87)

Halo Infinite is the most recently released game on this list, having hit stores in December 2021. To say that the game’s reception has been mixed would be an understatement, as although the game received an 87 Metascore that consisted of a few perfect scores, some people were put off by the game’s lack of content at launch, which caused many people to put the game down and never pick it back up again.

Still, what the game does offer is generally excellent, particularly the single-player campaign that differentiates itself from previous Halo games for featuring a stunning open world.

10 Titanfall 2 (87)

Released in October 2016, Electronic Arts’ Titanfall 2 went under the radar when it was first released, presumably due to EA’s bizarre decision to release it just seven days after their WWI shooter Battlefield 1.

EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson explained the odd decision by saying that he felt the games catered to different types of FPS fans. Although the risky strategy didn’t seem to pay off, it isn’t hard to see where he was coming from. Titanfall 2 differentiates itself from most other shooters on the market with not just its titans but its extremely fast-paced movement. Word of mouth has been EA’s best marketing tool for the game, as positive feedback from players has ensured that Titanfall 2 is still thriving today.

9 Battlefield 1 (87)

The aforementioned Battlefield 1 received the same Metascore as Titanfall 2, and as previously mentioned, took players back to World War 1. EA’s decision to take the series back to the Great War was clearly a smart choice, as the game’s trailer became YouTube’s most liked trailer in its history, whereas the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer, which hit the site around the same time, become the most disliked.

Battlefield 1 didn’t disappoint its many new and old fans, providing players with one of the best online experiences on Microsoft’s third console.

8 DOOM (87)

It’s always nice to see a DOOM title on an FPS list such as this, as the genre likely wouldn’t be anywhere near the size that it is today without the iconic IP.

After numerous delays and confusion from fans over the release of DOOM 4, the project was scrapped. In its place came DOOM (2016), a soft reboot of the franchise. The game’s developer, id Software, didn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Rather, they opted to keep the action-heavy gameplay that the series is known for.

7 Destiny 2 (87)

Originally released in 2017, Destiny 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter developed by Halo‘s creator Bungie.

Destiny 2 won numerous awards upon release, including Best PC Game from the Game Critic Awards and Best Multiplayer Game from Gamescom 2017.

Bungie’s first-person shooter is still picking up awards years after its release, including The Game Awards’ Best Ongoing Game award in 2019. Destiny 2 was nominated for the same award in 2020, though it lost out to Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky.

6 Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus (88)

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus is the first of four games in a row that received a Metascore of 88, technically making Bethesda’s game joint-second on this list.

Developed by MachineGames, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is one of the most critically acclaimed entries into the Wolfenstein franchise that began all the way back in 1981. The game was praised for its weapon variety and charismatic cast of characters but criticized for its underwhelming runtime.

Released in 2019 by the team of Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, Apex Legends is one of the many entries into the recently popularized battle royale genre.

The game hit the ground running upon release, amassing an incredible one million unique players in just 8 hours of its release. Apex Legends certainly wasn’t just a one-day wonder though, as it reached 70 million players in October 2019, earning an eye-watering $45 million in the autumn month alone.

4 Fallout 4 (88)

The long-awaited sequel to Fallout 3, Bethesda’s Fallout 4 was released in 2015 to a mixed response from fans and critics. Professional reviewers enjoyed the game, generally speaking, though many fans were unhappy with the highly anticipated game, exemplified by its 6.5 user score on Metacritic.

Criticisms from fans pointed out the game’s illusion of choice, with many of the seemingly different speech options offering the same result. This was especially disappointing as Fallout: New Vegas, released prior to Fallout 4, offered more freedom of choice. Still, there are many things to love about Fallout 4, particularly its huge open world filled with side quests and lore.

3 DOOM Eternal (88)

The success of the aforementioned DOOM (2016) convinced Bethesda to give id Software the thumbs up to make a sequel. Much like its predecessor, DOOM Eternal kept its gameplay centered around the simplistic action fun that the series is known for, rather than trying to implement multiple ambitious and complicated mechanics as some sequels do. DOOM Eternal did make a slight change from its predecessors, though, with its increased focus on storytelling that disappointed some fans and critics.

Despite the narrative’s mixed reception, DOOM Eternal received numerous nominations and awards, including the Game Critics Awards’ accolades of Best PC Game and Best Action Game.

2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (89)

There were few surprised faces when it was announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was being remastered, as the classic shooter’s influence continues to be seen today. Along with the game’s excellent single-player campaign was its revolutionary online multiplayer which set a high bar for the many online shooters that followed.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered has wonderfully updated visuals as expected. However, many players were happy to pay full price for the game simply to experience the online mode with packed lobbies once again.

1 Overwatch (91)

The highest-rated first-person shooter on the Xbox One comes in the form of a multiplayer shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Assigned into two teams of six, players are given a wide selection of heroes to choose from who offer vastly different playstyles, ensuring that each game has a unique balance.

The game exemplifies the old adage of simple to play impossible to master, resulting in an extremely addictive product. Overwatchwas showered with awards upon release, including Game of the Year awards from The Game Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, and the Game Developers Choice Awards.

Atomic Heart

No list of the best first-person shooters on Xbox Game Pass would be complete without Atomic Heart. No way! Crispy critters! While its terrible (yet hilarious) dialogue and predictable story are undeniable, Atomic Heart is an engrossing FPS game that caters to the kind of single-player experience many enjoyed while playing BioShock. Atomic Heart in no way reaches the same heights as Rapture in terms of environment, gunplay, or narrative, but enough components are there to make it worth your while.

Plus, there’s something immensely enjoyable about how awful the protagonist is. Seriously, he’s like the worst human being. But in between him spouting off nonsensical sentences and being rude as heck, there are some thrilling combat situations, with an emphasis on dodging attacks that you don’t always see in a first-person shooter title. Atomic Heart is not a masterpiece, but it’s a lot of fun. Just try to turn your brain off for a bit. Crispy critters.

GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007 is undoubtedly one of the most aged FPS games you could play these days, but it’s an odd sort of delight to experience one of the landmark titles in the genre on a newer console. Now on Game Pass, GoldenEye lets you spy the wonders (and tribulations) of what it meant to be an FPS game back then. Graphically, the game is nowhere near the visual wonder of some other titles on this list.

But controls-wise, this plays way better on an Xbox Series X|S than it ever did on the Nintendo 64. If you have the time to spare for a little jaunt down memory lane, James Bond’s most classic video game is an ancient shining star in the Game Pass library.

High On Life

High on Life stands out from the other FPS offerings on Xbox Game Pass in more ways than one. Not only does it mix some platforming in with its more shooty-shooty features, but its humor is off the charts. Every weapon you hold in your hand, from melee-oriented sword-things to doughy guns with faces, speaks to you throughout your adventure. The zaniness of High on Life cannot be understated.

If you have a low tolerance for crude jokes, High on Life is definitely going to test your limits. But if you enjoy immersing yourself in classic Rick-and-Morty-esque laughs, this game was made for you. Not every first-person shooter game has to involve deathmatch; some just need to take you on a hilarious space-faring journey with a talking gun.

There are still issues that persist with Battlefield 2042, but given that it’s the latest entry in the Battlefield series, it’s also the one that is receiving some of the most support right now. New maps, specialists, and vehicles have been added in the time since its release, all of which have served to make it a decent offering in the Game Pass library, courtesy of EA Play.

Despite its incredibly problematic launch, Battlefield 2042 is now a serviceable game that’s a pleasure to dip into when you need some mindless multiplayer fun. It’s in no way the cream of the crop, but it’s nothing to scoff at when you’re craving those awesome Battlefield moments that the series is known for.

Prodeus

Prodeus is still in early access, but it is by far one of the most underrated FPS games currently on Xbox Game Pass. Taking clear inspiration from Doom, Prodeus is stylized like an early first-person shooter from the 90s, but it includes a few modern amenities. You can look up and down for starters, and though the graphics are intentionally pixelated, the gameplay is fast. Prodeus plays like Doom Eternal sans the Marauder.

And the best part is you can even play with a friend. So picture Doom Eternal again, but this time you have a fellow player at your side, zooming and shooting your enemies with you. This is the boomer shooter of your dreams. If you like FPS games and haven’t played Prodeus yet, you have one heck of a good time waiting for you.

Deathloop

Deathloop is not your typical first-person shooter as you can very much stealth your way through the different areas of the game. Colt Vahn, our time-loop-breaking protagonist, can sneak his way around in his attempt to kill all the Visionaries on the island of Blackreef. But where’s the fun in that? Deathloop features a variety of guns that have a blend of old-timey and modern looks to them.

And if shooting your way through all those Eternalists is still not loud enough for you, you can add one of the most satisfying kick mechanics in the history of gaming into the mix. It’s more measured than your average FPS game, but it’s brilliant in its execution.

Metal: Hellsinger

Now this is what FPS games were meant to be. Music. Metal: Hellsinger presents players with hellishly good music and asks that they perform kills to the beat, creating one of the most satisfying experiences in gaming. Though the title isn’t long, you’ll find yourself itching to replay moments in the game just so you can feel the supreme satisfaction of swiping a sword or firing a gun at the perfect downbeat.

No, the narrative is nothing to cry home about, and the visuals are not ground-breaking. But the rhythmic shooting hits this absolute sweet spot between gameplay and soundtrack. It’s not the first game to have done this, but it is the most recent, and it’s a damn fine sample of the genre.

Even though Perfect Dark is definitely one of the more aged inclusions in our best FPS games list, it was ahead of its time when it was first released in 2000. And aside from the dated graphics, the game still holds up fairly well today. Frequently praised for letting players have the ability to shoot guns out of the hands of the enemy, Perfect Dark contributed to the groundwork for many of our favorite mechanics that we see in modern first-person shooters.

Using guns as melee weapons, open-ended levels, and a home base section where you could train and hone your skills are just a few of the features we love in the game. With a reboot on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to get into Perfect Dark once more.

Far Cry 5

The Far Cry games are some of the most entertaining FPS games out there, especially given their open-world nature. And Far Cry 5 is one of the greats, especially given that two players can participate in some campaign co-op fun. Admittedly, your jaunt into Hope County is not the absolute best Far Cry experience, but it’s a solid outing in the series. It’s got everything you could want from a Far Cry game: larger-than-life-but-eerily-familiar antagonists, rowdy wildlife, and an open-world sandbox. And you can experience the madness side by side with a friend.

Halo 5: Guardians

343’s sophomore entry into the illustrious Halo franchise was a bit of a divisive one among established fans. But factually, what they delivered was a solid FPS that iterated on the established formula in a number of ways. Halo 5 introduced advanced movement mechanics, new and redesigned weapons, and quite potentially the biggest ensemble cast of pivotal characters the series has ever seen.

The campaign picks up after the events of Halo 4. As with the second Halo game, we’re given two playable protagonists in the shape of Master Chief and Spartan Locke, each complete with their own fireteam. The narrative also establishes Cortana as a series villain, to the chagrin of most of the fan base. Story aside, the enhanced movement of Halo 5 makes the multiplayer facet of things an intense affair. Boosting, sprinting, clambering, and sliding became, at least in this entry, part of the Halo experience.

Doom (1993)

No list of the best FPS games in general would be complete without including the original Doom. As can be seen further along in this list, the Doom series is home to fantastic first-person titles, and none of them would exist without this 1993 classic.

The graphics are dated and the flow of combat can feel odd (the limits of Doom’s engine when it was made means looking up was an impossibility), but the fun inherent in roaming the zany map and shooting demons is undeniable. There are worse ways to explore a genre’s roots, and Doom is most definitely the grandparent of FPS games as we know them.

Doom Eternal

Doom 2016 revitalized interest in this grandfather FPS series, but Doom Eternal entirely redefined its formula. Already known for its fast-paced action and demon-slaying antics, Eternal ramped all of that up exponentially. The “dance” of glory-killing and shotgunning foes became far more tactical, as certain demon types require specific weapons to defeat and ammo counts across the board took a nosedive.

There is no other FPS game in the genre that requires split-second chess moves the way that Doom Eternal does. Add to that improved story environments and tougher challenges to complete, and Eternal is one hell of a game in the Xbox Game Pass library.

Halo is back in the form of Halo Infinite, the latest installment in the iconic series. The multiplayer is bombastic and fun, and the campaign breathes fresh air into the franchise. 343’s marriage of an open-world game with that classic Halo DNA might seem like an unlikely pairing at first blush, but experiencing Infinite’s campaign firsthand is something of an eye-opener concerning Halo’s vast potential for emergent gameplay.

Narratively, players get to experience the Master Chief’s most personal story to date, as his journey across Zeta Halo to defeat the remarkably credible threat of the Banished dredges up dust and echoes from his past. And now that campaign co-op has finally been added to the game, up to four people can engage in chaotic fun as they grapple their way across the ring.

Kill It With Fire

Kill It With Fire is not your traditional first-person shooter. You are not blazing through missions using a variety of guns, cover-based mechanics, or ammo management. Rather, you’re slowly and methodically hunting down spiders that have made their way into your abode. At your disposal, you have a bunch of weapons (guns included) to take out these troublesome arachnids, with each ludicrous new addition to your arsenal somehow superseding the absurdity of the last.

You may be more likely to burn down the entirety of your house in the process, but piling up mounds of overturned furniture as you hunt down every last eight-legged monstrosity to have taken up residence in your home definitely qualifies as unreasonably satisfying.

Back 4 Blood

Fans of the FPS genre should be quite familiar with the Left 4 Dead games, and Back 4 Blood is a true successor to those zombie-shooting, co-op fun fests. A healthy variety of guns (and a handful of melee weapons) can be found during a run. And boy, do you need them. Hordes of the infected “Ridden” throw themselves at the team of up to four players. Surviving a run entails that everyone is up to speed with their shooting skills. Back 4 Blood is a fantastic addition to the Xbox Game Pass library, and it is a thoroughly enjoyable cooperative experience with phenomenal replay value.

Courtesy of EA Play, subscribers of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate can experience the Crysis series in all of its glory. Though it has largely fallen out of the cultural zeitgeist, it was something of a graphical benchmark at the time of its release — the phrase “But can it run Crysis?” achieved memetic status with good reason. PAYDAY 2 was originally released in 2013 — and in some ways, it definitely shows its age. But the Crimewave Edition packs in a whole bundle of improvements and additions the core title has seen over the years to great effect.
