The best SteelSeries mouse we’ve tested is the SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless. It’s a versatile mouse capable of handling a wide range of game genres. It has excellent sensor performance, very good click latency, and plenty of customizable inputs, including five buttons on the left side. Unlike most models designed to handle multiple genres, this model focuses on lightweight construction, with weight-saving diamond-shaped cutouts on the palm rest and click buttons.

This lightweight design makes this mouse very easy to move quickly and accurately, which is especially helpful if you play fast-paced or competitive games where every millisecond counts. Although, if you’re sensitive to slightly irregular textures on your hand, you may prefer a more traditional option with a solid plastic shell, like our best budget pick, the SteelSeries Prime. There’s also a wired version of this mouse that’s less expensive and has better click latency, making it a standout choice if you’d prefer trading a wireless connection for a small performance boost.

For an option that’s typically less expensive, we recommend the SteelSeries Aerox 9 Wireless. The price of this mouse goes up and down quite a bit, and It’s sometimes more expensive than our top pick, the SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless, so it’s worth waiting for a sale. This mouse is designed for playing games with plenty of controls, like MMOs or MOBAs. It has a full 12-button side panel that you can load up with all your custom binds and macros using the SteelSeries GG software.

Like other high-end SteelSeries options, this mouse has excellent sensor performance and very good click latency, making it more than suitable for the titles it’s designed for. Unlike virtually all other MMO-focused mice, this mouse is surprisingly lightweight, about 20 or 30g lighter than some of its closest competitors. It can make a big difference when playing fast-paced games or group content that requires split-second timing. The diamond-shaped cutouts in the palm rest and click buttons play a large part in making this mouse lightweight. Some gamers won’t appreciate how it looks or how this texture feels compared to a more traditional solid plastic outer shell, but if you’ve been dreaming about a lighter wireless MMO mouse, this is the mouse for you.

The best SteelSeries mouse we’ve tested as a mid-range option is the SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless (2022). This lightweight FPS-focused model with full RGB lighting is an updated version of the popular SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless. This new model maintains the classic symmetrical shape and is also very lightweight, weighing only slightly heavier than its wired version and around the same weight as many of the best mid-range lightweight options currently available.

In terms of performance, this model has good click latency and a sensor with excellent motion latency and accuracy. This updated model also feels sturdier than the original version and features higher-quality mouse feet that glide more smoothly on mousepads and desks.

If you’re on a budget, we recommend you check out the SteelSeries Prime. It’s a straightforward, wired model with a right-handed shape with two side buttons, and it’s based on one of the most popular mouse shapes of all time. This shape is best suited for larger-sized hands, but there’s also a mini version for smaller hands plus a wireless version, though both are more expensive. Looking under the hood, this mouse performs similarly to other options on this list. However, it’s more suited for casual gaming as it doesn’t quite deliver the performance recommended for competitive FPS titles.

This mouse has a solid plastic shell, which makes it feel extremely sturdy, so it’s a great choice if you’re on the fence about the more open honeycomb designs of some of SteelSeries’ more premium options. Despite its solid shell, this mouse weighs virtually the same as the much higher-priced SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless, partly because it’s a wired version that doesn’t have an internal battery. Altogether, this is a balanced model with a time-tested shape. It’s an affordable option that may work well for you if you prefer a sturdy solid mouse body and aren’t interested in peak performance or wireless connectivity.

For a cheaper model, we recommend the SteelSeries Rival 3. It’s one of SteelSeries’ older wired models but has the same symmetrical shape as the significantly more expensive SteelSeries Aerox 3 Wireless (2022). While it’s heavier, it also has a smooth plastic shell without any cutouts, making it extremely sturdy. Unfortunately, its cable is fairly stiff and not very lightweight, although it does feel high quality.

Additionally, it has a slightly higher minimum lift-off distance than other options on this list. It’s only likely to be an issue if you’re a low-sensitivity player, you have a smaller area for your mouse movements, or you’re generally someone who frequently lifts and repositions their mouse during gameplay. Despite this minor issue, this mouse has excellent sensor performance and click latency which rivals some of the higher-priced options on this list. This mouse is a viable wired option if you’re looking for an inexpensive mouse that can hold its own in faster-paced, more competitive games that rely more heavily on peak performance.

Compared to other brands

  • Great and consistent build quality.
The build quality of SteelSeries mice is typically great, even in the budget range.
  • Comfortable to use.
SteelSeries mice are usually well-designed to provide a comfortable grip.
  • Software offers good customizability.
The SteelSeries GG software has many customization options and is available on Windows and macOS.
  • Underwhelming high-end performance.
While SteelSeries mice have excellent click latency and sensor performance overall, they don’t offer the same high-end performance as certain flagship options from competitors like Razer, Logitech, or Corsair.
  • Bloated software.
While SteelSeries’ software has good customizability options, it also receives criticism from some gamers for requiring frequent updates and consuming unnecessary system resources. Additionally, you need to keep the software running in the background to use certain features and settings that you can’t save to onboard memory. For example, you can’t use custom RGB lighting settings without the software running.

SteelSeries vs Razer

Razer produces a wide range of gaming peripherals and has different lineups of mice for specific gaming genres. Razer enjoys a small technological lead over SteelSeries and the wider gaming mouse industry, notably due to their development of the newest generation of sensors, lightweight construction techniques, polling rates higher than 1000Hz, and optical switches. Similarly, SteelSeries has recently experimented with hybrid optical-magnetic switches and focused on more lightweight designs. Still, they’ve remained largely dependent on honeycomb construction techniques compared to the solid body designs used by Razer. You can see our recommendations for the best Razer mice.

SteelSeries vs Logitech

Logitech is the world’s largest manufacturer of computer mice, and while they primarily make mice for productivity and everyday use, they have a very strong gaming division. Technologically speaking, Logitech is responsible for some of the most cutting-edge sensor and wireless connectivity technology. While SteelSeries previously dominated within the competitive sphere, Logitech has recently established a firm foothold in this space, and their flagship lightweight model, the G PRO X SUPERLIGHT, is currently one of the most popular and widely used mice in the competitive esports landscape. You can see our recommendations for the best Logitech mice.

SteelSeries vs Corsair

Corsair got its start producing hardware components, including memory and coolers. They’ve since expanded into producing a wide array of gaming peripherals. Today, they have a full lineup of mice for various gaming genres. Corsair’s mice typically match SteelSeries options in terms of build quality, and they were among the early companies to experiment with polling rates higher than 1000Hz. However, they haven’t been as quick to adapt to industry trends toward more lightweight models, and their gaming mice aren’t typically found at a highly competitive level. You can see our recommendations for the best Corsair mice.

SteelSeries produces gaming mice for casual and competitive gamers alike, and they’re typically very well-built and comfortable to use. They also have some of the best software support and platform compatibility, allowing you to access all customization options no matter which operating system you use.

Lineup

Aerox: The Aerox lineup includes a range of symmetrical wired and wireless models designed for different kinds of gaming, including models for FPS, MMO/MOBA, and more versatile multi-genre models. The standout feature shared by all mice in this lineup is their lightweight construction with diamond-patterned cutouts on the palm rest and click buttons.

Prime: Mice in the Prime lineup have a solid plastic shell and a comfortable right-handed shape. The standard Prime and Prime+ models are best for medium or larger-sized hands, but there’s also a mini version available, and both models have wired and wireless versions. Altogether, these are fairly conventional gaming mice, but they use a hybrid optical-magnetic switch which offers the improved reliability and performance of a high-end optical switch but a crisper and more satisfying click similar to traditional mechanical switches.

Rival: One of SteelSeries’ older models, the mice in this lineup have solid plastic shells and symmetrical shapes with a wide rear end. Various wired and wireless configurations are available for FPS and multi-genre gaming.

Sensei: The Sensei series of mice have a straightforward ambidextrous shape that’s among the oldest and most widely regarded shapes in the SteelSeries catalog. The Sensei Ten is a modernized update of the original Sensei series of mice, which were at the height of their popularity during the early days of esports gaming.

9 Best SteelSeries Mice – Rating 2023

The heroes of this rating are the excellent gaming mice from SteelSeries, which combine such qualities as reliability, functionality and durability.

SteelSeries Rival 3

The SteelSeries Rival 3 gaming mouse immediately surprises with its affordable price and wide features. Outwardly, the device looks solid and of high quality, despite the fact that we are talking about one of the cheapest models in the company’s catalog. However, there are revolutionary gaming ambitions here, including cool RGB lighting on the bottom of the case, as well as a symmetrical shape and a lightness of 77 grams. By the way, the device has a mechanical encoder with switches for 60 million switches marked SteelSeries, and a reliable TrueMove Core optical chip is used as a sensor. To configure the mouse, a proprietary SteelSeries Engine application is provided.

From the outside, the device looks laconic and discreet, but behind the external simplicity lies tactile splendor and flagship characteristics. Notable design features include a laser engraved logo on the back and a long light guide strip that runs through the entire bottom. Each element has an RGB backlight, which gives it a special elegance.

Size-wise SteelSeries Rival 3 is a medium-sized mouse with a classic 5-button button and side keys on the left side. At the top between the keys is a small DPI sensitivity adjustment button. In terms of ease of grip to the device, there are no complaints. It is ideal for owners of medium-sized hands. The comfortable grip with fingers is also pleasantly pleasing, since the mouse is small and light. Users also like the highest level of tactile comfort. The main keys are pressed elastically with excellent tactile feedback and instant return. The side keys are narrow and slightly convex, but due to the compactness, the thumb always contacts them, and accidental presses are reduced to zero.

The SteelSeries Rival 3 is an undeniably cool gaming mouse with advanced features and an eye-catching design.

SteelSeries Sensei Ten

The SteelSeries Sensei Ten stands out for its meticulous design, which is copied from previous generations. The body received a streamlined shape with a drop-shaped elevation in the center. Also, the changes affected the coating of the top panel, which is made of silky to the touch soft-touch plastic. The keys are pressed smoothly and clearly, without backlash. They also have a short and distinct stroke, with a slightly muffled left click. In turn, the right click is more sonorous. The middle button is pressed lightly and clicks with a distinct but muffled sound.

The signal cable extends slightly into the housing in the center and is wrapped with a rubber anti-kink protection. The scroll wheel has rubberized inserts with mild notches. The locking positions are marked with a ratchet, the noise of which is heard during fast rotation. There is no backlash in the mechanism. The device has a symmetrical shape, which is why it is convenient for both the left hand and the right. The weight balance center runs exactly between the side buttons. By the way, the manipulator itself weighs only 92 grams without a cord and 130 grams with a wire. The base of the case is made of translucent smoky plastic. There are two semicircular Teflon feet on the bottom and one more on top.

SteelSeries Sensei Ten runs on SteelSeries Sensei Ten proprietary software with SteelSeries Engine 3 driver in current version 3.16.1. It can be downloaded from the official website. All available configuration settings are on one display. On the left are the main parameters that are in the memory of the PC, including the assignment of buttons, macros and media commands. It is also possible to activate the key to quickly switch between configurations.

SteelSeries Rival 5

If you’re looking for a cool gaming mouse for action-packed games, the SteelSeries Rival 5 is the perfect choice. This is one of the best models for gamers who appreciate not only advanced technical characteristics, but also the aesthetic appeal of the peripherals used. The SteelSeries brand clearly knows what it’s doing when it comes to gaming devices. This is a cool gaming controller with 9 programmable keys and luxurious RGB lighting. There are 5 switches on the left side of the case for quick setup of the device on the fly, and on the top there is a DPI adjustment button with a choice between left and right keys. There is also a scroll wheel. With physical dimensions of 128.80 x 68.15 x 28.20 mm, the SteelSeries Rival 5 is a very long mouse for medium to large hands. However, in terms of ergonomics and ease of use, there are no complaints about the device. Its weight is 85 grams.

The case is made of high-quality plastic, but is characterized by durability and strength. Its edge lighting covers 10 lighting zones with 16.8 million vibrant colors. The default color scheme for RGB is rainbow, but you can change it through the SteelSeries GG app to suit your personal needs. To connect to a PC, a two-meter USB cable with a good braid is used. It is moderately elastic and long, so you can comfortably work with the mouse from a long distance.

The SteelSeries Rival 5 features an 18000dpi SteelSeries TrueMove Air series optical sensor with 40G acceleration and 1000kHz sampling rate. Mechanical mouse switches are rated for 80 million clicks, which means they will last you a very long time. The switches themselves are responsive and reliable, and the clicks feel soft and are much quieter than other gaming mice in this price segment.

Anyone looking for a relatively affordable yet cool and colorful gaming mouse will be pleasantly surprised when they first encounter the SteelSeries Rival 5.

SteelSeries Aerox 3

SteelSeries Aerox 3 belongs to the category of ultra-light mice weighing 57 grams without wire. Similar characteristics were achieved due to the mesh holes in the case – the device is almost completely made of them. There are no holes only on the front of the main keys and side elements. The shape and dimensions of the mouse are similar to the above-mentioned Rival 3.

The main buttons are pressed over the entire surface, and after actuation and a characteristic sound, there is still a minimum margin of a couple of mm before touching the body. The scroll wheel is geared towards gamers. Clear cutoffs and a tight ride are expressed for perfect control even in the most intense gaming sessions. The sensitivity control key and side buttons are ergonomically placed and do not cause discomfort. There are 4 Teflon feet on the bottom of the case, and a TrueMove Core sensor with sensitivity from 200 to 8500 DPI is installed just below the center.

SteelSeries Aerox 3 has one of the best utilities that is constantly improving and getting better. We are talking about the SteelSeries GG and SteelSeries Engine software for macOS and Windows 10. The user interface is in Russian and looks very informative, which simplifies setup. Due to the lightness and Teflon legs, the gadget glides perfectly on the table and does not slip out of the hands. In games, the sensor of the model works out with a bang without disruptions and inaccuracies. The keys themselves are pressed correctly, do not play and do not creak, which is not strange for the equipment of this brand.

SteelSeries Prime+

The SteelSeries Prime+ is incredibly light at just 71 grams, which is very small for a mid-sized solid body mouse. The device comes with a detachable USB Type-A cable (on the PC side) and microUSDB on the mouse side. The cable itself is very flexible and can compete with flagship solutions. The device’s Teflon feet provide flawless glide, and the ring around the sensor maintains a stable resolution even when the mouse is pressed against the work surface. For easy removal of the legs, special recesses are provided.

The shape of the mouse is of the EC2 type with a right-sided bulge and a flattened profile. The highest part is shifted to the left, and the slopes are almost symmetrical, which increases the comfort of use. The overall build quality is not in doubt. Even if you shake the mouse with great effort, it will be impossible to hear any backlash, creaking and other third-party sounds. The main keys work smoothly and well. The left key before and after operation has an extremely small stroke. The side controls are also solid, and the travel before and after actuation is almost zero, which guarantees an instant response regardless of the place of effort. The scroll wheel is also excellent, providing comfortable scrolling.

The body of the model has a slightly rough matte finish that is pleasant to the touch. The SteelSeries Prime+ is equipped with the flagship TrueMove Pro sensor with an acceptable resolution of 18,000 dpi and speeds up to 450 IPS. The list of factory settings includes resolutions of 400, 800, 1200, 2400 and 3200 CPI.

If you’ve been looking for a reliable gaming mouse for a long time, the SteelSeries Prime+ will be a real discovery for you.

SteelSeries Rival 710

The SteelSeries Rival 710 is a cool gamepad made for the right hand with several separate sections of different materials and with different shapes. The back is made of matte soft-touch plastic, and the keys are separated from the main back and made of identical material. Visually, the buttons and the back are slightly different from each other. The keystrokes are very soft with minimal effort and a muffled click. According to the manufacturer, the switches used under the buttons have a resource of over 60,000,000 clicks. Most likely, we are talking about OMRON switches. Between the two keys on top there is a massive scroll wheel and a sensitivity adjustment key.

The right side of the case has a structured pimple pattern, but no keys. In turn, the left side has an identical texture, but is supplemented by three control keys. In order to personalize the mouse, the designers used a rubberized plug, also called the nameplate. On the bottom of the mouse, along the edges, there are medium-sized Teflon legs with convenient recesses for replacing them.

An important feature of the device is the TrueMove3 sensor, which is considered one of the most advanced computer mice in the industry, developed in close cooperation with Pixart. The sensitivity of the high-precision sensor reaches 12,000 DPI, and the acceleration is 50 G. This guarantees perfect response accuracy. Another model is distinguished by the presence of a small display on the left side.

Without a doubt, the SteelSeries Rival 710 is one of the best manipulators in its price range, offering flagship features, reliability and ease of use.

SteelSeries Rival 600

The SteelSeries Rival 600 gaming mouse is one of the leading gaming mice in the company’s lineup. The device is equipped with a TrueMove3 linear sensor with lift-off detection and a sensitivity of 12,000 CPI in 100 CPI increments. The sensor transmits movements to the screen with an accuracy of 1:1. The auxiliary sensor only monitors the lift-off distance and supports lift settings from 0.5mm to 2mm. The device itself is made in dark colors with an asymmetrical body shape. The surface is made of soft-touch coating with rubberized inserts for better grip.

On the front you can find a USB connector for connecting a cable, two petals and a rubberized wheel. In the center you can see the auxiliary programmable button. The back is medium in size, but very massive. Customizable RGB lighting adds a touch of sophistication to an already cool design. It can be adjusted using the SteelSeries Engine 3 software. There are 8 independent lighting zones for the wheel, backrest logo and side stripes.

SteelSeries Rival 650 Wireless

The SteelSeries Rival 650 has been the number one choice for the best gaming mice on numerous occasions, and its Wireless version has only improved its position in the market. The device is equipped with an identical TrueMove 3 sensor with amazing positioning and accuracy. As with the wired version, you can add 16g weights to the sides to increase the weight. This is done for maximum user convenience, because someone prefers light accessories, and someone likes to play on heavy mice.

The battery life is 24 hours, but to recharge for another 10 hours of play, just charge the mouse for 15 minutes. The model not only looks organic on the gaming table, but also lies well in the hand. The case with 8 autonomous backlight zones has a high-quality soft-touch coating with excellent tactile sensations. The sensor of the model is made of two sensors: the first monitors the movement of the device on the table, and the second analyzes the separation height in order to avoid interruption of movement when the mouse is lifted from the table or rug.

Determination of lift-off height improves accuracy

While most gaming mice measure liftoff based on the primary sensor only, the Rival 600 provides a unique solution using a secondary sensor to achieve the most accurate liftoff detection. You will never again see random cursor movements when you raise or lower your mouse.

True precision without distortion

TrueMove3 sensor, co-designed with industry leader PixArt, supports resolutions up to 12,000 CPI and 350 IPS. Instead of focusing only on high CPI, TrueMove3 was designed to deliver true 1 to 1 motion accuracy. By moving the mouse a certain distance on the carpet, you will get the same distance movement on the screen without lag or distortion.

FAQ

What is the difference between TrueMove3 and TrueMove3+?

TrueMove3 is a sensor with sensitivity up to 12,000 CPI, 350+ IPS, 50G and 1 to 1 tracking accuracy. TrueMove3+ combines two sensors: TrueMove3 and a second sensor that is solely responsible for detecting liftoff height. All the technical innovations of the TrueMove3 sensor are now included in TrueMove3+, it tracks the height of the mouse-off much better.

Why complicate things so much? Why not place all the weights in front or in the back?

Weights in a straight line on the sides allow players to adjust the weight and balance of the arm. Due to this distribution of weights, you can achieve the ideal weight without sacrificing the balance of the mouse.

What is the best weight setting to use?

Each player has his own preferences. Usually, players who prefer to play at low sensitivity choose light mice, and those who prefer high sensitivity use heavier models. But there is no right or wrong here. Experiment until you find what works for you.

TrueMove3 again? Why don’t you increase the mouse CPI?

The current sensitivity of the TrueMove3 sensor is more than sufficient for all modern games and a high CPI value does not guarantee a high sensor quality. The sensor also runs at speeds up to 350 IPS, which we think is great for a gaming mouse. With this in mind, we decided to improve another important aspect of the mouse – the accuracy of determining the height of the separation.
