How the Golden Apple became a rejuvenator for Detsky Mir

Ekaterinburg retailer expects to conquer the Kazan market of luxury cosmetics

Detsky Mir, which had been empty for 8 years, finally opened its doors to visitors yesterday. True, so far only the first of the four floors of the shopping center is available to Kazan citizens. It was completely occupied by the store of the Yekaterinburg perfumery network Golden Apple, which became the anchor tenant of the renovated shopping center. The shopping center will fully wake up from many years of hibernation only by the summer.

is available so far

The long-suffering “Children’s World” has finally opened its doors to customers. True, only the first of the four floors of the shopping center

STAVKA ON LUXURY

The Kazan shop became the third branch of the Yekaterinburg company Golden Apple after Chelyabinsk and Samara. Its trading area amounted to 1.5 thousand square meters. meters. In Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk, the stores are more modest – 1 thousand square meters. m, and the largest supermarket chain is located in Samara – 2.5 thousand square meters. meters.

According to the company’s website, the concept of the Kazan supermarket is “a combination of a huge range of perfumes and cosmetics from global luxury brands to popular quality manufacturers, as well as a diverse selection of household chemicals, home care products and accessories presented in luxurious modern interiors “.

5% of the supermarket assortment will represent exclusive “selective” perfume brands; another 40% are prestigious brands of perfumes, decorative cosmetics and luxury care. The remaining 55% of the assortment will fall on consumer goods, which include the following categories: perfumes, cosmetics, face and body care products, personal hygiene products, household products, household chemicals, haberdashery, costume jewelry and accessories.

Konstantin Petrosyan (right) did not name the exact amount of Yabloko’s investments in the opening of the Kazan store, noting only that it amounts to “millions of dollars”

According to BUSINESS Online Konstantin Petrosyan – commercial director of Landor Investments, which owns the building, with the opening of a new supermarket, the Golden Apple management expects to occupy at least 50% of the Kazan luxury cosmetics market. In his opinion, this niche is poorly represented in Kazan now. Petrosyan did not name the exact amount of Yabloko’s investments in the opening of the Kazan store, noting only that it amounts to “millions of dollars.” Earlier, the media published information that the company invested about $10 million of its own and borrowed funds in the opening of a perfumery supermarket in Chelyabinsk in 2007.

According to the Commercial Director of Landor Investments, Zolotoe Yabloko was chosen as the anchor tenant of the shopping center after an analysis was made of a similar supermarket in Samara. “We know how it works, it is the number one store in the city. That’s why we invited them here. I think that the prospects here will be 50 percent better than in Samara,” Petrosyan noted. “Kazan is a great city, and most importantly, thanks to us, they managed to find good premises here. And they are very demanding on this issue.”

So far, cooperation between Landor Investments and Golden Apple is limited to lease relations, but in case of positive results, there is a possibility of further partnership

DID NOT AGREE

According to Petrosyan, other players in the Kazan perfumery market: Rive Gauche, Ile de Beaute and L’Etoile also negotiated the lease of the shopping center, but the parties failed reach an agreement. “These companies open many stores a year and can’t always offer something interesting. Firstly, they cannot individually approach the opening of a store. Secondly, they cannot invest a lot of money in the repair, decoration and furniture of the store. Opening one store a year, Yabloko approaches the issue with great enthusiasm and can afford to make everything better, more expensive and more beautiful. By the way, inspired by the success of the Golden Apple, some of the trio, I won’t name names, took up the change of format and this year, probably, they will update the interiors,” Petrosyan said. According to him, while cooperation between Landor Investments and Golden Apple is limited to lease relations, but in the event of positive results, Petrosyan hinted at the possibility of inviting Yekaterinburg residents to his other projects or doing “something jointly”.

The technical opening of the 2nd and 3rd floors of the shopping center will take place in mid-March. And the fourth and fifth floors will be open only in May

However, the perfume retailer itself does not plan to open a second supermarket in Kazan or in other cities of Tatarstan. As the commercial director of Landor Investments explained, the policy of the Golden Apple is to open one, “but very good” store in a million-plus city. The only exception is Yekaterinburg, but only because it is the historical homeland of the company.

HOUSE WITH A HISTORY

Recall that the building of the department store of the Ministry of Trade of the TASSR, which was later renamed “Children’s World”, was opened on April 2, 1963. In 2006, the building was sold and the tenants evicted. For a long time it was believed that OJSC Detsky Mir or Sistema-Hals, subsidiaries of AFK Sistema, which owns the Detsky Mir trademark and the children’s goods retail chain of the same name, became the new owner of the building. However, Podium OJSC was later declared the owner of the building. For several years, it unsuccessfully tried to resell the building and eventually filed for bankruptcy in the summer of 2012. In September 2012, the building was acquired by the Moscow company Landor Investments. The company did not disclose the exact amount of the deal. According to unofficial data, the investment amounted to $30 million (this amount included the price at which the building was purchased).

According to Petrosyan, the technical opening of the 2nd and 3rd floors of the shopping center will take place in mid-March. And the fourth and fifth floors will be open in May. Now there are work on the installation and decoration of the premises.

“THIS IS A MARKET WHERE POOR PEOPLE CAN TOUCH THE WORLD OF LUXURY”

Experts note that the bet on the premium segment of the perfume and cosmetics market may well play. This segment has been developing at a faster pace than the mass segment over the past couple of years. The main consumers of luxury cosmetics are women aged 25 to 50 with an above-average income.

“Cosmetic products of the premium segment are a priori considered to be of higher quality and more effective,” said Anna Dycheva-Smirnova, Deputy General Director of Reed Elsiver . “In addition, buying expensive cosmetics, a woman feels involved in the luxury sphere.”

Director of Baby Park LLC Leonid Rakhimov believes that Golden Apple in Kazan will close the niche that Arbat Prestige once occupied. “In general, the basis of such stores is simple: the cosmetics market is a market where poor people can touch the world of luxury. This is a place where they can buy something with the beautiful name of Gucci, Louis Vuitton and so on,” he said. According to Rakhimov, the cost of opening a perfume shop can be comparable to the cost of the store itself. “We are talking from 5,000 euros per square meter to infinity. And this is only for repairs, decoration and lighting, and you also need inventory and everything else, ”he explained.

Nevertheless, Rakhimov is confident in the good prospects for the Golden Apple. “This is the best place in Kazan. The three best positions: TC “Koltso”, the hotel “Tatarstan” and “Children’s World”, the prospects here can be colossal. Another issue is that there is a problem with parking. In any case, they will have to go to another shopping center, to a premium one, or work with an average buyer, those who walk and take the subway. And, judging by the success of “Rive Gauche” in “The Ring”, if they manage to fit into this niche, then success is quite likely. But the niche occupied by Arbat Prestige has not yet been occupied by anyone, here is the first application from the Golden Apple. I think that such a store will pay off within 5 – 7 years, and most will name this figure. This is due to the fact that investment loans in Russia are all limited to 7 years.”

How to fix an Apple device now – Big City

Last year, Apple suspended deliveries of its equipment to Russia, but until the beginning of March of this year, it continued to service imported devices. Recently authorized centers – popularly just “officials” – received a notification that the warranty service for Apple computers, laptops and tablets is still ending and the company will no longer supply spare parts for them. Interviewed by Big City, market participants believe that Apple’s refusal to service and change some devices to new ones may be associated with the ninth package of sanctions. Although you can still get your iPhone and Apple Watch repaired under warranty.

In addition, despite the bans and sanctions, Russian users are not left without their favorite apple technology – it is imported through parallel imports. Such devices also need to be repaired – both free of charge under warranty, and for money, for example, if the screen breaks.

“Big City” tells what to do if your Apple device is broken, how service will be carried out and why the service centers themselves now need help.

The easiest way is with equipment that was imported into Russia legally, that is, by the official importer of Apple, before February 24, 2022 – such devices are also called “Rostest”. Moreover, they could be sold later than this date, for example, in March 2022. “Rostest” equipment is repaired under warranty in authorized services.

“iPhone 13, officially imported into Russia, can now be repaired under warranty. But if the exact same iPhone was purchased in another country and imported in a different way, we can only serve it with an original receipt confirming the purchase of the device in that country. The receipt can also be electronic,” says Dmitry Kiryanov, founder and CEO of Brobrolab, an authorized Apple service and hardware store. The entrepreneur explains that the officials are guided by the rules that Apple sets. According to these rules, services may have previously required proof of purchase with documents. But now there are more such situations.

Any gadgets that have SIM cards – iPhones, iPads and watches – are produced with an eye to specific countries. iPhones have the most features. Those LTE frequencies that work in the USA, for example, do not work in Russia. And vice versa: our frequencies are not used in some other countries. A special iPhone 13 model was released for the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union – Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. Officials can service such iPhones both under warranty and for a fee, and, most likely, they will not ask for a receipt. Even if you received a gadget as a gift or bought it from hand, there will be no problems. If the model is different, for example, it is an American or Chinese iPhone, then different restrictions begin to apply: you can come to an authorized service, but you will be refused without a receipt.

However, the rules may change. “It happens that we place repairs in the manufacturer’s service base, but at the time the clearance is completed, Apple’s procedure may change. But this is a rare scenario. Moreover, this is not a recent innovation, it has always been like this, ”says Dmitry Kiryanov.

If a device, for example, Apple Watch 8 or iPhone 14, is not officially serviced in Russia, then according to the current rules, it will not be accepted for repair in an authorized service even if there is a receipt from a store in another country. Officials will only be able to diagnose such a gadget and determine whether the repair will be under warranty.

There is an easy way to check if your device is eligible for warranty repair: if it is on the Russian official Apple website frozen in time, then there are chances. But in order to find out exactly whether a particular gadget can be repaired under warranty, you will still have to contact the service center and conduct an initial diagnosis.

Some Apple devices are considered non-separable: they are not repaired in authorized centers, but replaced with new ones. Moreover, they can exchange both a defective gadget under warranty, and a broken or broken gadget for an extra charge. Apple Watch and iPad are considered non-separable. They also completely change other gadgets that are not recognized as non-separable, but it is impossible to fix them. It can be, for example, an iPhone that has a factory defect.

Now, authorized services only take equipment for exchange, the service of which has not been suspended. That is, defective iPhones will be exchanged, but tablets, laptops and computers will no longer be.

Under the Consumer Protection Act, the customer can contact the seller. Now new devices are imported into Russia by parallel import by several companies at once – both hardware stores and intermediaries who help in overseas shopping. They confirmed that they are ready to provide warranty service. But, as Dmitry Kiryanov explains, the seller is not obliged to repair the device in an authorized service, but can transfer it to one of his partners – “unofficial”.

You can also repair such devices abroad – in countries where authorized services work. But they may ask for a receipt for the purchase of equipment in the country where it is officially sold. It does not have to be the same country as this service center. For example, with a French device, you can contact the officials in the UAE. But a Russian check from a company that sells iPhones that are imported through parallel imports will not be accepted at a foreign service center.

Another difficulty that Dmitry Kiryanov warns about: if the iPhone needs to change the back system with the motherboard, then a local part will be supplied at the service center. For example, a person with a two-SIM iPhone from China will receive a single-SIM phone after repair in conditional France.

“For a client, if he buys a device in some trusted store, most likely nothing will change, except for the repair time and the fact that the device must be returned to the store, and not to an authorized service. Vendors who import equipment by parallel import will take warranty devices abroad to service. But there is an assumption how sellers will reduce their costs for warranty service – they will start to get to the bottom of the details. “Do you have a scratch here? “That’s it, no guarantee.” It seems to me that the times when it was possible to get trouble-free maintenance of equipment in an authorized service center have already passed, ”says Dmitry Druzhbin, founder of the Apple Fixed. one service center and equipment store.

The advantage of the official center is that the masters are trained there and receive certificates that allow them to work with apple technology directly from Apple. And if the device is damaged in such a service, it will be replaced with a new one.

Now spare parts have stopped coming to official services, and employees have not received permission from Apple to work with new equipment. Therefore, with the latest iPhones and watches, customers will have to turn to “unofficials”.

But the quality of the repair does not necessarily depend on the status of the service center: good craftsmen can also work for “unofficial”. It is better to focus on reviews on websites and comments on social networks – they do not always have time to quickly remove the negative.

Dmitry Druzhbin from Fixed.one – this is just an unauthorized service – says that nothing has changed in the work of “unofficials”. They, as before, buy parts from suppliers who bring spare parts from China. Another source of parts is the Independent Repair Program, under which Apple allows unauthorized centers to purchase licensed parts from Apple. “In Russia, this program was also supposed to be launched. We applied for it, went through several stages of selection. And one of the last was supposed to take place just at the end of February 2022. Of course, nothing worked. But the advantage for us is that the parts that are shipped to service centers under this program end up on the market, and you can buy them, ”says Druzhbin. Also, unauthorized services buy broken devices themselves, disassemble them for spare parts and can offer the client a choice – to supply an original or a Chinese part.

Apple prevents the installation of non-original and even parts removed from similar devices on its devices, because gadgets that are repaired in this way may have problems. For example, displays do not have True Tone Ambient Lighting and Auto Brightness. In the worst case, the part will not work at all. But the masters are trying to fight this. “There is a constant race between Apple and craftsmen, mostly Chinese. Apple puts restrictions, and craftsmen sculpt their programmers and methods for bypassing these restrictions. Screens and batteries are being flashed, they have already learned how to fix Face ID, which was also considered unrepairable before,” Dmitry Druzhbin assures.

Repair times have really increased now. Dmitry Kiryanov from Brobrolab explains that several factors act on this – both sanctions restrictions and a global shortage of spare parts. “So far, it is difficult for us to even predict the delivery time of spare parts. We must carry out repairs in approximately 14 days, but now no one can guarantee these terms. For unpopular parts and rare models, they can be more than a month, or even up to three months. As an authorized service, we cannot use any parts other than original parts and will have to wait. But we hope that the lines will stabilize and become more predictable within three months, ”says the entrepreneur.

Also, for the time being, Brobrolab cannot carry out repairs on the day of the call. Even if earlier the battery on the iPhone was changed practically at the client, now the replacement time has increased to six hours. In this case, many services offer customers a paid prioritization service.

The experts we interviewed confirmed that repair prices are practically not growing, even despite the complexity of logistics and the weakening of the ruble. As soon as a new device comes out, the prices for servicing the previous ones fall. That is, on the one hand, the price of parts increases slightly, and on the other hand, the markup for the model decreases.

Recently, all clients of the Brobrolab service received emails — the team asked to support the work of the center and send any monetary donation. They promise to thank those who transfer money – they will be sent souvenirs and recorded a personal thank you video. But the main thing is that customers will still be able to contact a convenient service that has never failed before.

Dmitry Kiryanov told why the company faced difficulties. First of all, Brobrolab has always specialized in servicing computers — up to 40% of requests were associated with them. And now, the supply of parts for computers and laptops to authorized services in Russia has been stopped. New devices, iPhone 14 or Apple Watch 8, can only be taken by an authorized service center for diagnostics. Moreover, some of the potential customers have left.

But Kiryanov is going to keep the business and rebuild it. First of all, the entrepreneur offers Russian stores that import equipment through parallel imports to diagnose whether the malfunction is a warranty case. And then they will be able to send equipment for exchange and repair to their partners.

Dmitry Kiryanov is also going to recommend to customers a reliable unauthorized service, which will offer non-original spare parts. For legal entities, ttu.global is already working in parallel with Brobrolab, it offers to send equipment for servicing abroad, to authorized centers. In the future, a one-stop service should also appear for individuals, where a client can simply come with a broken iPhone and receive all the same services as before, but perhaps with extended terms. Now, in order to hold out while the business is being rebuilt, the company had to launch crowdfunding.

The “unofficials” also had to change their work. Dmitry Druzhin says that Fixed.one has an office in Armenia, and this way the company can cooperate with a local authorized service center. But for now, the processes are only working out. Another area that the services are developing is the resale of used, repaired and tested Apple equipment.
