Apple keyboard: Magic Keyboard – US English

Every Magic Keyboard That Apple Currently Makes

The Magic Keyboard is the wireless keyboard that Apple designed to work perfectly with its entire Mac line, but it can easily be paired with an iPad, Apple TV or iPhone as well. The “Magic” Keyboard was first introduced in 2015 as the successor to the Apple Wireless Keyboard, the latter of which charged via batteries and not a Lightning cable.

[product-summary-view][/product-summary-view

The beauty of the Magic Keyboard is that it’s the exact same keyboard that’s integrated into the latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and Apple includes it when you purchase an iMac, too. The keyboard has the same layout, same switches and keys — it’s the same experience.

Of course, the Magic Keyboard that was released in 2015 isn’t the same Magic Keyboard of today. The most notable change is that, as of mid-2020, Apple replaced the Magic Keyboard’s low-travel butterfly switches — which were widely criticized because they were so error-prone — with the current Magic Keyboard with click-ier scissor switches. But Apple has also integrated the latest Magic Keyboards with other features, such as Touch ID, and they come in different colorways now, too. There’s even a Magic Keyboard that’s specifically designed for the 10.9″ iPad Air and 11″ iPad Pro, as well one for the 12.9″ iPad Pro.

Apple introduced the first Magic Keyboard with Touch ID when in also introduced the redesigned iMacs with the new M1 chipsets in 2021. These are the first (and only) Magic Keyboards that are available in colors like blue, green, red, orange and yellow. However, it’s important to note that Touch ID on these specific Magic Keyboards will only work on a device that has Apple’s M1 (or more recent M2 chipset). Also, Apple doesn’t sell these color Magic Keyboards separately — you can only get one if you buy a 24″ iMac.

This is Apple’s most basic and entry-level Magic Keyboard. It’s a small and relatively portable option, and it’s a good fit for any older Mac that does not have Apple silicon. Available only in white.

Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad

This is the same Magic Keyboard as above, only you’re paying an extra $20 (or $30) for the numeric keyboard. Only available in white.

Magic Keyboard with Touch ID

The big advantage to this Magic Keyboard, released in late 2021, is that it has an integrated button for Touch ID, so you can unlock the computer without entering a password or PIN. However, Touch ID only works if paired with a Mac computer that has Apple silicone (such as a M1 or M2 chipset). The keyboard will still work with an older Intel-based Mac, but Touch ID will not.

This is the same Magic Keyboard as the above, only you’re paying an extra $20 (or $30) for the numeric keypad. The Touch ID button only works when paired with a Mac that has Apple silicone. It’s available in white or black, but the latter is even more expensive (typically $199).

Magic Keyboard for 11″ iPad Pro and 10.9″ iPad Air

Courtesy

The Magic Keyboard is the most advanced keyboard accessory that Apple has ever made for its iPad line. It basically takes the best features from the Air’s new keyboard — scissor switches, click-anywhere trackpad, backlit keys — and puts them in a form factor that works for the 11″ iPad Pro and 10.9″ iPad Air. It’s really the only accessory that’s designed to make your iPad feel like a MacBook. Available in black or white.

Magic Keyboard for 12.9″ iPad Pro

This is the same Magic Keyboard as above, only it’s slightly bigger so that it can fit the 12.9″ iPad Pro. It’s also $50 more expensive. Available in black or white.

Pros
  • Attractive design
  • Solid feel

With its understated look and premium features, Logitech’s Craft model is the connoisseur’s choice for Mac keyboards. My favorite part of this keyboard is the dial on the top that lets you do things like change the volume and configure other software options. The keys feel precise and comfortable with just the right amount of feedback to give you confidence in knowing that you’ve hit the right key. The backlighting on this model is particularly nice for working in dim lighting conditions.

Pros
  • Comfortable
  • Long battery life
Cons
  • Small size may not be the solution you’re looking for

For anyone who loves the cute look of the standard Apple Magic keyboard but wants something that’s a little more comfortable, the MX Keys Mini is your best bet. This compact keyboard fits neatly off to the side of your desk but offers the same plush feeling of larger counterparts. The battery life is excellent, and I’ve spent weeks of solid typing on this device without having to recharge. It’s got a solid aluminum build that looks and feels great and should last for years.

Pros
  • Matches the Apple look
  • Numeric keypad
Cons
  • Keys feel shallow and uncomfortable

If you absolutely must have a keyboard that matches your Mac in every possible way, then your best option is Apple’s own keyboard. It’s got the exact same look and feel as most Mac computers. The keys aren’t as nice to press as many other keyboards on the market, but some people actually prefer the lighter feel of the Apple keys, which are akin to those on many laptops. This model includes a nicely sized numeric keypad. For $50 more, you can get the same Apple keyboard with touch ID.

Pros
  • Sturdy
  • Fun design

The A80 is a delightful accessory with a firm yet yielding keystroke and a rugged design that should hold up to years of pounding. I loved the solid feel of the A80 during my recent test, and it didn’t slide around on my desk. Also great was the unusual color scheme that highlighted important keys and made the A80 stand out in a sea of drab equipment. The rechargeable battery lasts long enough that I saw no decrease in power even after several weeks of use.

I’ve owned the Logitech Mx Keys for more than a year, and it’s become one of my favorite keyboards. It offers a firm feel when you depress the keys, and the frame is reassuringly solid and doesn’t move around on your desk no matter how feverishly you type. I love the subtle backlighting and minimalist look that match both my MacBook Pro and my M1 iMac. Battery life is excellent; I’ve gone months without having to charge this model.

Pros
  • Great feel

Cons
  • Not the best looking keyboard

If you love the solid feel of a mechanical keyboard, then this Macally model is your best bet. The keys have a delicious, deep feeling that offer great feedback when you depress them. The backlighting is terrific, with three settings for varying levels of intensity. My favorite part of this keyboard is the slight angle at which it’s tilted, which makes it more comfortable than flat models (ahem, looking at you, Apple). The aesthetic of this keyboard screams early 2000s, but some people might find that charmingly retro.

Pros
  • Cool retro look
Cons
  • Uncomfortable keys
  • Short battery life

If you want to fantasize that you’re writing the great American novel on a typewriter, this Azio model has the look you’re going for. With its round keys and metal and leather accents, the Retro Classic doesn’t look like any other keyboard on the market. Personally, I love the look, but in my recent hands-on test I found the keys to be a little uncomfortable compared to modern designs. The battery also didn’t last as long as that of some other wireless keyboards I’ve tried.

Pros

At first glance, the Mistel looks bizarre, like the love child of a typewriter and an old-school pair of headphones. But once you start to use this keyboard, the genius becomes apparent, with the split design allowing you to position it into the most comfortable configuration with your Mac. It’s also got tons of goodies, like smooth mechanical keys and RGB backlighting for bling. Macro nerds will love the fact that the entire keyboard is programmable.

Pros
  • Great backlighting
  • Slim design
Cons
  • Slightly cheap feeling

This Macally keyboard offers the slim look and feel of Apple’s own keyboard, but the key presses are more comfortable. I love the fact that the Macally is USB-powered, because that way I don’t have to worry about connection problems or the keyboard running out of juice at a critical moment. The backlighting is nice and bright and is adjustable to three levels. This model doesn’t have the same solid feel as some of its more expensive competitors, but I appreciated its slim design when I packed it as a backup for a recent trip.

Pros
  • Tiny

Cons
  • Short key travel

The BK06 has been my travel companion for years when I need a keyboard to toss in my carry-on luggage that won’t weigh me down. It folds up into a tiny package and weighs just over 6 ounces, yet it is surprisingly comfortable to type on. I love the fact that I can use this keyboard with my Mac, iPhone, and iPad just by switching the Bluetooth connection. Don’t expect the same level of key travel as you’d get with a full-sized keyboard, however.

My fingers fly over the Air75, thanks to its low profile keys and perfect feedback. The result is my typing speed gets a boost, and my hands are less tired after a long typing session. I love the long battery life this keyboard offers and the RGB lighting mode with different effects. Another nice feature is that this keyboard supports both a wired and Bluetooth connection. Not everyone will love the slightly gaudy design, however.

More Mac Keyboard Tips From Our Expert Sascha Brodsky

Photo by Sascha Brodsky // Full-size keyboards, like the Macally 104 Key (top right) and Keychron Q3 mechanical (bottom) provide a more satisfying typing experience than the compact Apple Magic keyboard that comes with your Mac.

PM: What is the most important consideration with a Mac Keyboard?

SB: Comfort is king when it comes to choosing a Mac-compatible keyboard. There are many gizmos that manufacturers like to add on, like unique designs and nifty lighting, but none of that matters unless your fingers are comfortable dancing over the keys. It’s best to try a keyboard in person so you can find one that matches your typing style.

PM: What is the life expectancy of a keyboard? —How long before I need to replace it?

SB: A well-made mechanical keyboard should last a decade or more, even with heavy use. On the other hand, a membrane keyboard, which is the less expensive kind—might only last two years.

PM: Do you prefer wired or wireless keyboards?

SB: I prefer to have both around. I tend to use wireless keyboards, but for those times when I hit a snag and the model I’m using runs out of power just when I’ve gotten into a writing groove, it’s nice to know I have a wired option waiting in the wings. The latter doesn’t need any external power, as it gets the juice from your computer’s USB port.

PM: What’s the right size keyboard for most people?

SB: I strongly recommend buying a full-sized keyboard instead of a compact model. Your fingers will thank you for the extra space that makes typing a more comfortable experience. A few exceptions to this rule are if you travel often and need something smaller that fits in your carry-on or if you have absolutely maxed out your desk space.

A cheap replacement for an apple keyboard.

Hello everyone, today I would like to tell you about my next keyboard. Since not a single toad would allow spending 2500 rubles for an original keyboard (we are talking about office keyboards, after all), a search for alternatives was undertaken. And now, it was found, moreover, 5 times cheaper.
TLDR: In general, when viewed from above, it is very similar. However, a closer look reveals differences. And not just differences, but obvious shortcomings: a tight key travel, an incomprehensible layout, a gap between the keys and the case, stickers. I would not recommend this keyboard for everyday use. And for a tablet it will do.

Not so long ago I did a review on another keyboard that copied the design of the apple one, but it had such shortcomings as: the position of some keys did not match, the fn key was not detected by the system, and the shift periodically did not want to be held. And since it was also flooded with hibiscus, as a result of which the escape button began to protest, I decided to order a new one. This time I already took this one, since it is declared compatible with apple products. Found cheaper, ordered, and now, received.

She was well wrapped in puffy. I don’t even know why, but that that keyboard was accompanied by an abundance of pimples, that this one.
Here, a comparison of a roll of bubble wrap that came with a tablet touch and with this keyboard (keyboard bump on top)

But let’s not digress.

Photo of box

You know, copying was no longer set at the stage of the box. Some of it is too … Decorated. I liked the box of the previous keyboard more.

The box contained a bag containing a keyboard and only one piece of paper with terrible picture quality.
By the way, they also do not apply to this keyboard, since this one does not have batteries, it works on 2x AAA batteries.

At first glance, the keyboard seems to be quite good, however, when I held it in my hands, I did not like it sharply.

First, there are stickers on the keys, which is somewhat unpleasant both aesthetically and tactilely.

Secondly, the gap between the keys and the frame is larger than the previous keyboard, but the worse thing is that there is a small gap in height, which is very conspicuous.

Compare old and new keyboard

Such a brick from below … Well, not at all in an Eplovian way. Rather, a full-sized apple keyboard has the same one, but this is not a full-sized one!

As you can see, the new one is slightly higher.

And now let’s be specific.
As for design: Firstly, this brick from below is not at all aesthetic. Secondly, because of it, the rubber pads do not touch the surface on which the device lies.
It is also somewhat unusual for me personally that there is so little free space on top.
The biggest disappointment was that all the designations on the keys are made in the form of stickers. In general, this is not particularly felt on the letters (but it is clearly visible!), But on the function keys . .. They are somehow glossy. Somewhat unpleasant. Yes, stickers tend to peel off.

In terms of usability: The key travel is stiffer than the previous keyboard. If on the old keyboard you could slowly type almost silently, then on the new one, no matter how hard you try, you will not press the key silently. Moreover, her noise annoys me. Already accustomed to peace and quiet. Also, sometimes the keys don’t work.
It is impossible not to forget about one important feature of this keyboard. It was made for Macs with all the consequences. It behaves almost like a Mac, which means that the function keys will act like media keys. That’s just the escape key, even in OS X, only works with Fn held down, just like the shutdown key, which is generally marked as “Del”. In order for the keys to work as they are supposed to, you need to hold down fn OR install BootCamp, but it will probably not help with all keys. You can read more about using the Apple keyboard under Windows here
By the way, about its poppy character – OS X did not determine the type of keyboard.

However, the keyboard does not fall off. Never once did a key stay pressed after it was released, or that it stopped working while being held down. In general, if it were not for the tight travel of the keys and noise, it would be quite comfortable to play on it. Although there is a slight delay.

But unexpected for me was that she refused to work in EFI. I read and asked if a Bluetooth keyboard would work in EFI and was answered yes. But, alas.

No less unexpected was the fact that here the Fn key is again not detected by the system! That is, even in OS X, by pressing Fn twice, the system will not start converting speech to text. Not to mention that it is impossible to make binds using this key.
Design: I singled out this item separately, since it is here … To put it mildly, not very much. First of all, everything is on latches. Not a single screw. In general, I initially wanted to insert a new keyboard into the case of the old one, but I simply could not open the new one. One latch, well, does not tear off into any. Apparently someone “accidentally spilled glue.” The gaps are also extremely unpleasant, which not only irritate the user’s eye, but also are a way for all sorts of dirt to get under the keys.

At the end of the review, I would like to highlight the main advantages and disadvantages of this keyboard.
Pros:
– Makovskaya markup
— Wireless
— Scissor fastening of keys
– There are versions with applied Russian letters
Cons:
– Design. And I’m not talking about the fact that it does not completely repeat the Apple keyboard, but that this “box” is simply not aesthetically pleasing
– Heavy key travel. Impossibility of silent writing
– The complexity of disassembly, as well as mediocre workmanship
— The markup is made by means of stickers.
— Oddities with folding. Incomprehensible shift, media keys under OS X did not work as functional ones.
– The system does not detect the Fn key
