Pros
  • Works on other cookware too
  • Rinses easily
Cons
  • May leave some streaks

One of the most versatile stovetop cleaners we’ve tested, EZ Brite’s Glass and Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner and Conditioner not only tackles grimy glass and ceramic cooktops, but it works on glass and enameled cookware and bakeware too. Quartz and stainless steel surfaces that are looking a little lackluster can also be restored with this stovetop cleaner. In our Cleaning Lab tests we found that because it’s a gel, it goes on and rinses off easily, though it can leave some streaks behind. And as a multi-use product, it not only cleans, but helps clean out the clutter in your cleaning product cabinet, too. To top it all off, our experts found the label directions were excellent and very easy to follow.

Pros
  • Easy-to-use trigger

Cons
  • Has to sit to effectively clean tough stains

Our experts appreciate a multitasking product and this gas cleaner is just that. It works on drip pans, knobs, stainless steel, glass, enameled grates, glass and even metal bakeware. When we tested this cleaner in the Lab, our experts were impressed with its performance, but noted that to effectively clean tough stains, it needs to sit for longer than others we tried.

Best Glass Stovetop Cleaning Wipes

Weiman Cook Top & Microwave Wipes

Pros
  • Convenient and disposable
  • Also cleans microwave ovens
Cons
  • Not great for heavy messes

Nothing beats convenient cleanup solutions like disposable wipes. GH Seal star Weiman Cook Top & Microwave Wipes are single-use wipes that are excellent for quick wipe-downs and spur-of-the-moment polishings. Our Cleaning Lab pros say it’s a smart idea to stock these wipes in addition to a heavy-duty cleaner, since they allow you to stay ahead of messes without a lot of work. They may be a little bit thin for really tough jobs, but they work on gas stovetop burners and grates, as well as glass microwave plates, too, and are double-sided for scrubbing and wiping — perfect for when pasta water splashes out or oatmeal bubbles over.

Pros
  • Cleaner and polish in one
  • Doesn’t require much scrubbing
Cons
  • Some say the smell is too strong

Another multitasking Good Housekeeping seal product? You bet. Weiman Cook Top Max is a cleaner and a polish all-in-one. This paste contains microbeads for better scrubbing action and protectants to restore shine. In our tests it did a better job of attacking burned-on soil with less scrubbing than liquid cleaners did. Other cleaners turned a small mess into an even bigger one upon application, but because this is a paste, it didn’t. While we didn’t mind this stovetop cleaner’s smell, some reviewers found it a bit uncomfortable. Because it’s a thicker paste, it’s best used with a moist scrubbing pad for easier application.

Pros
  • Includes multiple tools
  • Non-abrasive scrubbing pads
Cons
  • Product runs out quickly

When a cleaning liquid or gel isn’t enough, reach for this kit from Affresh to clean stuck-on gunk from your glass stovetops. This kit includes a five ounce bottle of creamy cleaner, a scraper to remove heavy grime and five cleaning pads to work the product into the stovetop. According to the manufacturer, the pads are non-scratching and many reviewers online agree. We haven’t tested this kit in the Cleaning Lab yet, but have tested the cleaner liquid and found it worked well. Because of the small size of the cleaner and few scrubbing pads included, you’ll need to restock more frequently if you use this regularly.

Pros
  • Comfortable to hold
  • Extremely effective
Cons
  • Degrades relatively easily

This little tool has been previously recognized as a top product in the Good Housekeeping Best Cleaning Product Awards for how easy it is to use and how well it cleans grime and gunk from glass stovetops with just water. The scrubber is abrasive enough to clean without scratching and when we tested it on a heavily-used GH Test Kitchen cooktop, we were amazed at how well it powered through grease and stuck-on grime, but noticed it began degrading after just a few uses. The handle design is comfortable to hold and allows for easy, quick cleanup after dinner without extra steps or products.

Pros
  • Residue-free
  • Rinses easily
Cons
  • Runny consistency

Carbona products have long been favorites in the Cleaning Lab, from the laundry room to the kitchen. Unlike other creamy cooktop cleaners we tested in the Lab, this Glass Ceramic Cooktop Cleaner didn’t make a big mess when we applied it to our test stove. It was not only effective at removing burnt-on messes, but rinsed away easily — eliminating any chance of leaving behind a residue that can build up over time and hamper the cooking performance of your stovetop. We didn’t have any trouble with the cleaner’s consistency, but it was too thin for some reviewers.

Pros
  • Non-abrasive
  • Streak-free
Cons
  • Each pad can only be used once or twice

In case you haven’t guessed it yet, multitasking is the theme here. These handy pads can be used way beyond the stovetop. They dissolved grease and stuck-on messes from the glass cooktop we tested them on, but they can be used on the microwave, sink, range hood and more. The cleaner is built in to the pads and only requires water for activating so no buying other cleaners, wiping up extra liquids or storing extra bottles around the kitchen. Flip the non-abrasive pads over and use the polishing side to remove any remaining cleaner and add a little shine to your cooktop too without leaving streaks behind. Each pack includes eight large and 16 small pads, but each one is perforated in half for smaller jobs so you won’t have to use a full pad for smaller messes. Take note that each pad can only be used once or twice before you have to throw them away.

How we test the best stovetop cleaners

The Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab regularly tests all kinds of cleaning products, including hundreds of kitchen products like stovetop cleaners, oven cleaners, kitchen countertops and more. In our last full category test of stovetop cleaners, our experts tested 14 different cleaners on the market. To measure efficacy, our testers applied a measured amount of spaghetti sauce to a smooth, pre-heated stovetop in an even layer. They then baked the sauce on for five minutes, allowed it to cool, then, according to package instructions, cleaned with each stovetop cleaner. They scored each one based on how much residue was left behind, and repeated the test three times to make sure each cleaner performed consistently. Our experts use these stovetop cleaners at home for real world testing of all different kinds of sticky, heavy messes that can happen during dinnertime.

During tests, our Lab pros also considered things like ease of rinsing — how many passes were required to visibly remove cleaner from the stovetop — as well as neatness of application and completeness of directions. Because cleaner residue can affect the performance of a stovetop, our experts pay special attention to any residue that is left behind. Each product’s packaging is also carefully inspected for proper instructions, safety labels and ingredients lists.

What to look for when shopping for stovetop cleaners

✔️ Stovetop material: Stovetops come in a variety of different materials, including stainless steel, glass, ceramic and enamel. When selecting a cleaner, the most important consideration is what type of stove you have — the wrong type of cleaner could damage the surface. Always consult the label to make sure a stovetop cleaner is safe to use on the material your stove is made from. You’ll avoid damaging your stove and potentially voiding your appliance’s warranty.

✔️ Type of cleaner: There’s a whole host of cleaning products suitable for restoring shine to your stovetop sponges, pads, wipes, pastes, sprays… you name it. Disposable cleaners like wipes and pads are very convenient for routine everyday cleaning. They’re easy to use and neater than sprays and pastes though they likely won’t be as successful at removing heavy, baked on messes. Sprays and pastes tend to be stronger, but require a little more time and effort to use. These are better suited for removing stuck-on stains and for more thorough cleanings. As with any cleaning product, regardless of the type of cleaner, you should follow all safety precautions printed on the label.

✔️ Scent: In the past, strong cleaning products have been known for having strong, uncomfortable smells. Many of the stovetop, oven and other kitchen appliance cleaners we test now in the Cleaning Lab come in pleasant scents like lemon or have no scent at all. The scent won’t change the efficacy of a cleaning product so it all comes down to your personal preference when selecting the cleaner that is right for you.

How do you get burnt-on grease off of a stovetop?

If you’re struggling with caked-on food and burnt-on grease, try this method, recommended by our Cleaning Lab experts:

  1. Lay a hot, moist towel on the cooktop to help soften the residue.
  2. Hold a razor blade or the scraper that comes in a cooktop cleaning kit at a 45-degree angle and carefully scrape off the burned bits. Repeat several times, if necessary.
  3. Clean the entire cooktop with the stovetop cleaner of your choice (make sure it’s safe for your surface material). Rinse well and buff dry.

How to clean the hob and oven?

The job of a home cook is as much about dirt as it is about cleanliness. Peeling one potato or fish is worth something! And what about heat treatment, when substances acquire a new state at high temperatures: products can burn, turning into an inseparable crust, fat becomes sticky and viscous, even water leaves unaesthetic stains. But engineers and chemists do not leave housewives alone with these problems, they are trying to make household work easier and keep each new stove in its original form.

The stove is washed from the “head”

The hob is the most sought-after cooking area, because here the products turn into mouth-watering dishes. At the same time, crumbs accumulate on the panel, smudges form from “escaped” food, oil drops remain – all this must be removed. Only a few materials are used on the panels:

• glass-ceramic is one of the leaders, comfortable and smooth.

Easy care, although there are subtleties. You should immediately buy a scraper – it looks like a razor, by the way, and the blades can be replaced. A scraper is the most important helper in emergency situations; without it, cleaning from burnt food residues is almost impossible. In addition, glass-ceramics do not like sudden changes in temperature, so cold water should not fall on hot glass. For normal cleaning, glass ceramics should be at room temperature or slightly warm.

• stainless steel is a durable and practical material.

Do not use powders or products with abrasives for cleaning, the metal is easily scratched. The surface must be protected from acidic substances: juices (lemon, for example), vinegar, special descaling agents, they will leave indelible stains.

• Enamels are smooth and beautiful, but their luster is easily lost if the slab is “run” and then cleaned with hard particles.

The burners are exposed to high temperature loads, and it is worth paying special attention to their cleanliness. Cast iron pancakes are wiped with a damp cloth with soapy water, wiped dry. And to protect from rust and just for beauty, they are lubricated with fat that does not contain salt. It needs to be calcined by turning on the heat for a few minutes. This procedure is especially relevant for stoves wintering in the country.

Gas stove burners are periodically removed, washed in a solution with dishwashing detergent. Non-chrome parts can be cleaned with pastes and even wire sponges. They are installed in place only after thorough drying. Grids can be soaked in hot water with soda (for example, soda), the solution should be soapy to the touch. To ensure that no streaks remain on the surface, it must be thoroughly rinsed with clean water.

It is better to wash the cooker cover with usual means, without resorting to abrasives, rust removers, porcelain and earthenware products.

Control center

Control panels could be real islands of cleanliness, if not for drops of hot oil flying from the hob, water smudges and not always clean hands of the hostess. Therefore, the control panel must be cleaned regularly.

Volumetric panels get dirty faster, with dirty streams flowing directly under the rotary controls. You have to mess around and remove them with the help of improvised means, it is clear that you don’t want to do this every day.

The space between the timer and alarm buttons is also difficult to clean. After all, the distances are small.

Any instructions for the stove indicate that the appliance can only be washed when it is unplugged from the mains. In addition to the security issue, another one is being solved this way. While you carefully scrub the space between the buttons, it is quite difficult not to hook and activate them, and neither you nor the stove need this “color music”.

Panels are very convenient, equipped with recessed handles that “go” inside, and the surface becomes absolutely flat, no virtuoso curtsy from the hostess is required – wave the napkin as much as you like.

This white, white door

The oven door has a hinged design and is held on by two hinges. If we started a general cleaning, you can take advantage of the manufacturer’s “kind” offer and rent it for a while. Ideally, even a fragile woman should be able to carry out this procedure. There are small latches on the hinges, they are turned, the door is closed (or slightly covered), lifted and pulled towards itself.

According to eyewitnesses, the most interesting thing may come later, when the door needs to be put back in place. One of our employees told how easily she managed to remove the door of her stove, but she could no longer put it on, she had to “call for help the cavalry”. Her husband, recalling the developers with an unkind word, installed the door in place for about fifteen minutes, now they don’t remove it.

The doors of some Bosch-Siemens ovens slide forward like drawers. They not only close the internal volume, but also serve as a support for baking sheets, wire racks and trays. This door is also removable. It needs to be fully pushed forward and slightly raised. True, in your hands there will be a whole structure, moreover, a corner one. So it will be difficult to wash it in the sink.

Window to the world

Glass is quite a weak point of the door. It must be spotlessly clean, otherwise it will not be able to cope with its main task – to help us spy on the cooking process. Internal glass in many models is removed. This is done in order to put it in order in more convenient conditions.

Often smudges form between the panes, they can only be removed by disassembling the door (the exceptions are double-glazed windows, in the space between the outer and inner glass of which not a single speck of dust can slip). This process is usually quite simple. Glass can be attached from the outside, then you only need to unscrew the fastener bolt. If it is installed inside, one or two special bolts are unscrewed with a coin or a screwdriver.

The most easy-to-clean door is the one that is completely covered with glass from the inside, and maybe from the outside. Judge for yourself – to wash the glass we take the usual product with ammonia, spray it, wipe it with a paper towel or microfiber, and that’s it. And if the glass is inserted into the door, you will need at least two tools. In addition, the door surfaces become more intricate and complex, all these grooves and ribs will have to be dealt with individually.

At the peak of cleaning

There is probably not a single housewife who would enjoy cleaning the oven. This is how we are arranged, we love cleanliness, but we don’t clean. Fortunately, we are not alone in this, women all over the world think the same way, but most importantly, developers-engineers. Therefore, there is a whole “vernissage” of methods for easy cleaning of ovens.

Give it to the park!

The method of cleaning with hot steam is not difficult, it seems that everything is already clear, and it can be “invented” in any kitchen. But in practice, there are a few things to keep in mind. Firstly, there must be steam, that is, the temperature in the oven must be such that the water does not evaporate overnight, but has time to soften the pollution. Therefore, the operating temperature is only 50 degrees. The second point is that the device is still electrical, so steam can cause a short circuit. Therefore, steam cleaning does not tolerate amateur performance.

In stoves where steam is used, the inner walls are lined with smooth enamel, dirt does not stick to it tightly, and swollen from moisture are removed in one motion. The cleaning process is a special function, the specified temperature and duration (30 min) are observed.

Cleanliness from idleness

The catalytic system was invented for those who do not even want to hear about cleaning. Usually one or two panels of the oven (back or two sides) have a special coating. In its pores, when the temperature rises during cooking, oxidation of fat droplets and crumbs occurs. They burn quietly, turning into a thin layer of ash. After the walls have cooled, they are wiped with a cloth, and that’s it.

But catalysis has several drawbacks. Panels, unfortunately, do not last forever. After about 3-5 years, they lose their ability to clean and need to be replaced. Although the second side of these panels can have the same coating, that is, the user only needs to turn them over to the “inside out”. If the panels are not updated in time, they will begin to become covered with the usual dirt for the stove, layer by layer, but it will be very difficult to clean them. The surface is rough and porous, perfectly retains plaque. In a word – it is better not to run. But even with the combat readiness of the catalytic panels, the rest of the walls still have to be cleaned.

Heat to shine

One of the most expensive cleaning methods, pyrolysis, is not common in stoves. But the presence of such a function is a kind of quality mark of the device. The fact is that during cleaning, the temperature inside the oven reaches 500 degrees, any pollution burns on the enamel covering the walls.

The elements of the slab must therefore be impeccable. The best metal is used for the furnace, otherwise it will lead after the first “hygienic procedure”. The security system is well thought out. If you want to cook on a Mercedes, without a doubt, choose a stove with pyrolysis. By the way, in the segment of expensive stoves, such models are the best-selling ones.

The instructions may include permission to pyrolyze the inside of the oven, baking trays and grates, and even gas burners. It is better not to do this, they may lose their luster, and you can wash them in a more gentle way.

Among the majority

Most sold models lack all these inventions, their advantage can simply be smooth enamel and thoughtful design solutions. Let’s look inside. On the side walls there are recesses for gratings and baking sheets; removable guides can be used. Without them, the walls remain smooth, and it is more pleasant to wash them.

A slight hitch can be caused by the light bulb cover. It can be located on the back wall on the side, on the side panel and even on the ceiling. The shade is easy to remove and wash in the sink or dishwasher.

Convection models are equipped with an additional decoration – ring heater and fan. This design is quite complicated to maintain. Therefore, during the operation of the grill, it must be protected; for this, a small grease filter is included in the kit. It looks like a small mesh window, it is easily inserted into place (it is fixed with special latches or brackets).

This helper in the fight for cleanliness frees the air currents circulating inside from fat droplets, which in turn settle where they are supposed to, and not on the fan blades. The filter itself is easily washed with soapy water directly under the tap or in the dishwasher.

Ceiling

The most difficult part of the oven is the ceiling, on which, depending on the design, the upper element, electric or gas grill are fixed. Electric heaters are thin tubes. But the gas grill is a whole complex and large structure. Sometimes lighting lamps are also installed on the ceiling. It’s good if all this “good” is hidden in a niche and does not interfere with putting in and taking out large products. But often they occupy just such a position that the housewives have to demonstrate miracles of dexterity so that the chicken or cake does not “mark” on these things.

Cleaning the ceiling with a full load of ammunition, lamp, grill and shade is not an easy task. It is difficult and not always permissible to use force – something can be damaged. It remains to rely on miraculous chemicals. Therefore, grill lovers (and he is a champion in wall pollution) are better off choosing models with folding electrical elements. They are attached with a thin guide and clamp. This guide is removed (it looks like a knitting needle), and then the elements are pressed from the latch. The grill and ten are lowered down, the ceiling remains completely free and ready for cleaning.

For fans of cleanliness

Some stove models are equipped with wheels so that they can be pulled out every many years and tidied up the floor, kitchen wall and cabinet sides.

Household chemicals

One of the most effective and suitable compositions for the care of the stove is ordinary dishwashing detergent. It combines softness, the ability to break down fats and fast rinsing.

(Consumer wrote in detail about dishwashing detergents in the fall of 2004, see www.potrebitel.ru)

One of the main conditions for cleaning is to keep the surfaces of the stove intact and safe. Therefore, the instructions so often prohibit the use of abrasive powders, metal brushes and washcloths. Chips and scratches of enamel not only deprive the device of attractiveness, but also provoke corrosion, aggravate the process of contamination. But soft products are effective for light dirt, but what if the stove is running? Worth a stroll through the departments of household chemicals. There are a number of specialized chemical compositions for putting slabs in order.

No grease, no dust.

The most unpleasant thing when washing the stove is frozen drops of fat on the walls of the oven or glass, not only is the work difficult, but you also have to stand on your knees. This is probably why “thermonuclear” cleaning products were born – active, but not requiring much effort on our part. This is a line of compositions for ovens, grills and microwave ovens.

They are available in several forms, such as aerosol cans or spray bottles. When applying the product to the surface, fats and protein particles are split, our task is only to collect the remnants with a napkin. Many of these products decompose into neutral components during “work”, which is also safe. But still, they cannot be used for ovens with self-cleaning.

There are very interesting representatives in the collection of this group. For example, cleaners that are applied to the walls of the oven and then heated to 200-250 C. During the cleaning process, only neutral substances remain on the walls, which are washed off with plain water. (By the way, you can wash the oven with ordinary dishwashing detergent, only in this case it should be heated to 50-100 C).

Let there be silicone!

Silicon base. In household chemicals, it plays the role of a film former. This invisible thin heat-resistant film covers all treated surfaces, protecting them from food particles and grease, scale and scratches. As a result, daily cleaning is reduced to a minimum – a few strokes of a soft cloth and perfect cleanliness. Silicone is used in care products for glass ceramics and metal surfaces.

How we were advised

The author of this article went to a large hardware store to collect information. Close attention to the plates did not escape the store staff, and a consultant approached her, kindly offering to help. When asked how to remove the door of the stove next to it, the author received a polite answer that only a specialist from the service department can do this, and he will have to be called specially. I had to object that now most of the plates can be “de-doored” even by a woman. Our “assistant” shrugged his shoulders and disappeared.

But the author did not let up, after a couple of minutes another polite young man appeared. His question sounded something like: “Do you need help?” After hesitating, our “scout” blurted out: “How does the grill recline here?”. The meaning of the answer boiled down to the fact that grills never, nowhere and under no circumstances do this. However, in the hands of the author was an instruction, which just said the opposite. The omniscient “specialist” immediately evaporated.

There was another assistant who, realizing that he could not handle the buyer’s questions, denied that he had been working here for the first days.

The store’s consultants looked at our author warily for a long time, no one dared to approach her. Therefore, if you want to know more about technology, read “Consumer. Household Appliances”, because sellers, unfortunately, in many stores do not have information about what they sell.

Cleaning products for ceramic glass surfaces

The cooking area always requires a more thorough cleaning. This is especially true of the hob or stove, because it is there that the most violent processes take place – boiling broths, baking and frying foods, stewing vegetables. Even the most meticulous chef’s cooking is not complete without splashes and burns.

Cooker cleaning technology directly depends on whether the kitchen has a gas hob or electric hob.

Hob construction elements can be made of different materials. A couple of decades ago, enameled stoves dominated kitchens. Nowadays, the choice has become more diverse. Specialized retailers offer hobs

  • in enamel;
  • stainless steel;
  • in glass ceramic.

Each material has advantages and disadvantages. So, the enamel coating will last a long time with proper use, delicate care. With sudden temperature changes, the enamel can become covered with microcracks. It is not recommended to use products with abrasives to clean it. However, the enamel coating has a good price / quality ratio. “Stainless steel” is an almost indestructible material, which guarantees a long service life. Among the shortcomings, a higher price is noted compared to an enamel coating. Stainless steel has a lower thermal conductivity than glass ceramics. The glass-ceramic coating has the best performance characteristics. Here you can choose between mechanical and touch control of heating, it has a low power consumption. But glass-ceramic does not withstand large static loads, point impacts. Modern hob requires special care.

To preserve the aesthetic properties, to serve as long as possible, any coating requires careful maintenance, high-quality, competent cleaning. For example, no surface will tolerate abrasive cleaners. The resulting scratches spoil the appearance of the equipment. But in addition, roughness adds complexity when removing contaminants in the future. Scratches are microscopic damage to the top coating of the hob. Fat, pieces of food, residues of detergents will subsequently fall here. As a result, the slab is quickly contaminated, creating favorable conditions for the development of microorganisms in such damage. A vicious circle is formed: the surface quickly gets dirty, in order to clean the scratched surface well, one has to resort to abrasive cleaning over and over again. After some time, we have a rough, damaged coating with an unsightly appearance. To avoid such a scenario, a competent approach is needed to the choice of a cleaner, care equipment.

Glass ceramics are now popular in hardware stores. Using their example, we will talk about the selection of products for cleaning hobs.

Recommendations for cleaning the glass-ceramic surface

To ensure that the maintenance of the stove does not take much time, follow a few rules:

  • Use only detergents recommended by the manufacturer for washing, do not experiment with cheap cleaners.
  • Do not cook in old cookware with chips or damage to the coating – sharp elements, nicks can ruin the surface.
  • If dirt on the burners is clearly visible before starting cooking, remove them before starting heating.
  • Do not use extruded aluminum cookware when cooking on glass ceramic. These pots and pans tend to deform from heat and leave marks on the surface.
  • Glass ceramic hobs have a smooth and even surface. But deposits and burns appear even on such a coating. The “sugar disease” of glass ceramics is known: “intolerance” of sugar both in its pure form and as part of jam, jam, syrup. It is impossible to clean the sweet burnt residues completely.

To clean the glass-ceramic surface, only special cleaners are used that do not damage the top layer. Sensitive electronics with touch control can also react negatively to aggressive chemistry.

Manufacturers of hobs strictly forbid the use of brushed napkins and fabrics, dish sponges with abrasive pads when washing. There is no need to even talk about metal sponges and brushes.

    Suitable for this delicate surface:

    • plastic scrapers;
    • melamine sponges;
    • microfibre cloths;
    • steam cleaners.

Means for cleaning glass-ceramic hob NPF Himitek

Fresh dirt can be removed immediately after cooking is completed and the hob has cooled down with neutral detergents. The recipe of HIMITEK KUKHMASTER makes it easy to remove food and household contaminants. The recipe includes an additive that softens the skin of the hands.

When contamination has been formed for a long time and subjected to repeated heating and cooling, it is more difficult to remove. But do not give up, if everything is done correctly and you use the CHIMITEK CHUDODEY-POLYPROM cleaner, then this problem can be easily solved. Deletes the combined pollution, including deposits from dust, soot, fat. Does not contain caustic alkalis and solvents in the formulation.

If stubborn deposits have formed on the surface, they cannot be removed using gentle detergents and cleaners. A short-term effect on burnt residues of products containing alkali is acceptable. The washing liquid is easy to apply on any surface due to the ergonomic packaging and volume. Removes even persistent, burnt fats, burns, soot. Adds shine to stainless steel surfaces.

    2. Exposure time during application – no longer than 5 minutes.
    3. *After use, the hob must be thoroughly rinsed with water or wiped two or three times with a cloth soaked in warm water.
