detailed review and impressions / Gadgets / iXBT Live

A detailed review of the flagship smart watch Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 after a year of active use. I will talk about what features I encountered during operation and in what this model has no equal. I’ll tell you about all the “pitfalls”, as well as what I liked most about the gadget.

The problem with most modern reviews is that they are done after a cursory acquaintance with the device. Most often, the author does not even use the gadget, but simply conducts superficial tests and a cursory assessment. But many features can be detected only after a long period of real, that is, “live” use, and sometimes they do not coincide with the initial impressions. So, Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 came out last summer and I immediately took it at the start of sales. Literally in a week, a new model of Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 will be presented, and therefore the price of Galaxy Watch 5 has now actually reached its minimum. For those who have long wanted a flagship smart watch on Wear OS, this is a great chance not to overpay and make a profitable purchase. In today’s article, we will talk about the most affordable model: without LTE, with a screen diameter of 40 mm.

    review video version

The watch is supplied in a compact pencil box with the model on the front.

What specific version is indicated on the sticker on the back, for example Galaxy Watch 5 40 mm has the letter index SM-R900. The date and country of production, as well as color are also indicated here.

Since I took the watch for myself, I chose the “classic” graphite, and for women there is rose gold and silver (with a lavender strap).

Inside the pencil case I found a watch and a box with accessories.

Namely: user manual, warranty cards in different languages and wireless charger.

The watch supports full wireless charging. If you already have a wireless charger for your smartphone, then you can charge the watch from it. If your smartphone is equipped with reverse wireless charging, you can charge your watch from your smartphone. Well, if you buy a Samsung Wireless Charger Duo, you can charge both your smartphone and watch at the same time with one charge. It turned out to be enough complete charging for me. A small round area is magnetized to the watch and is able to charge the watch by about 50% in 30 minutes.

The 40mm Galaxy Watch 5 is for those users who prefer a compact model. If you have a thin wrist, if you want a light watch, if you plan to sleep in it – in all these cases, a watch with a diameter of 40 mm is the best solution. Their weight is only 29 grams and they are not felt at all on the hand. Putting on, you forget about their existence almost immediately.

There is no physical rotating bezel here, but there is a virtual one. You just need to slide your finger along the edge of the circle, as if you wanted to twist a real bezel, and you will get the same effect. But the surface is absolutely flat and smooth, and the thickness is 9.8 mm. It can be logically assumed that without a bezel, the screen will be more likely to be hit and less protected from scratches. You should not worry, because sapphire crystal was used here. I did not use any protective glasses or films and for a year did not receive a single, even microscopic scratch on the screen. Although I never take off my watch and lead an active lifestyle. Over the course of a year, I visited them in a variety of locations: on the beach, at a summer cottage construction site, in a gym, for repairs, etc. Each time I was worried that I would get a scratch, but after rinsing it with water and wiping it with a soft cloth, I found only a clean glass surface.

I use the watch around the clock, both for tracking health and for monitoring physical indicators, especially when doing sports: jogging and cycling. Due to the fact that they are equipped with a GPS module, during activities I do not need to take my smartphone with me. Only watches and wireless headphones that play music from the internal memory of the Galaxy Watch 5. Comfortable? Certainly! Moreover, it is possible to install third-party applications from the market, such as Strava.

In addition to touch control and a virtual bezel, there are 2 physical buttons. They are located in such a way that if you lean on your hand, you will not press the buttons with your wrist. The buttons are used to bring up menus in various applications, as well as to go back or go to the main screen of the watch.

The speaker was placed on the opposite side. With the help of the watch, you can communicate and in some moments it is very convenient. For example, if I’m driving a car and my smartphone is in my pocket or bag, it’s easier to answer from the watch. When cycling, it is not only convenient, but also safe. The number of times I’ve talked while cycling without even taking my hands off the wheel is uncountable. Also very handy if you are working and have dirty hands. For example, I recently undertook to help my sister with mowing the grass around her house. Hands in gloves, and even dirty, and the phone in his pocket. Without taking off his gloves, he “picked up” the watch with his nose and talked normally.

Various gauges and sensors are located on the inside.

The watch is very technological and in addition to the banal pulse and blood oxygen saturation, it can measure blood pressure, make an electrocardiogram, and also analyze bioelectrical impedance (body composition, muscle mass, fat content, etc.). I have never seen anything like this in other watches, and only for this I am ready to put up with the low autonomy of the device.

The next thing I want to talk about is the strap. Naturally, it is removable and, more importantly, hypoallergenic. Previously, I often had irritation on my hand (redness that itched a lot) and to get rid of it I had to change the hand of wearing the watch or even take a complete break from the watch for several days. And this happened even with brands such as Amazfit or Xiaomi. But I shoot Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 only for recharging and there is no irritation! Recently I bought an additional (non-original) strap with Ali and the irritation appeared again. Draw your own conclusions, but Samsung definitely does not save on materials.

By the way, straps come in different sizes. I have the original S / M, and the one that I took on the alishka – M / L. They differ in length (+ 2 cm per size).

The clasp of the strap is made in a classic style, which prevents accidental opening due to outerwear or when swimming. The strap hides inside, does not hang out and does not cling to clothes.

In general, the design of the watch can be described as unisex. It has not changed in any way from the last series and there is a suspicion that it will remain unchanged in the future.

They look neat on the hand, they are pleasant and convenient to use, both in everyday life and when playing sports.

Aluminum housing painted gray (depending on the color you have chosen). Repeatedly clung to the surrounding objects for hours, and quite strongly – so far without any consequences. Describing the look and practicality, I can describe the watch in three words: thin, weightless and durable.

Bright, detailed, with pleasing colors and endless blacks, the Galaxy Watch 5’s screen will leave no one indifferent.

Since this is an AMOLED matrix, it is possible to use an AOD display. I have it on during the day and scheduled to turn off at night. This is of course an additional load on the battery, but incredibly convenient. You see the time and other information without pressing buttons and without raising your hand, as on a conventional “analogue clock”, which makes the device look active and “alive”. After using AOD screens, watches with a “dead” black display are not taken seriously.

The ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen according to the environment. The margin of brightness is decent and even in the open air all the information is well read.

Even in AOD mode, when the brightness is automatically reduced, everything can be seen normally.

The display has no air gap, under the sun it does not glare and does not go blind.

A huge number of watch faces are available that can be installed through a proprietary application. There are digital, analog and combined solutions that display various information.

And an infinite number of watch faces that are available through third-party apps like Facer. Hundreds and thousands of watch faces (paid, free, subscription, etc.). And Facer is far from the only service for such purposes. This is the advantage of Wear OS watches, you can download a huge number of third-party applications from Google Play, and thanks to the openness of the system, their number is constantly growing.

Depends on which applications you install. With Wear OS, it’s truly a smartwatch that lets you install Google Play apps, download images and music, and use the watch either with your smartphone or completely offline. Want to expand your sports features for running or cycling? Put on Strava or Adidas running. Need an advanced voice recorder or audio translator? Welcome to Google Play. And there is a lot more: a Google wallet for contactless payment, the same Facer for changing watchfaces, various applications for listening to podcasts, navigation, trackers, even a chatbot based on ChatGPT. Some applications only make sense on the LTE version. For example, if you want to run without a phone, but listen to Spotify, then you need to take the version with LTE to get access to the mobile Internet. In general, the use cases are very diverse and depend on your requests, so let’s move on to the standard features of the watch, which are available by default.

Best of all, the watch will reveal itself with a smartphone from Samsung, because on smartphones from other manufacturers, some functions are limited (blood pressure measurement and ECG). I have a Galaxy Note 10 Plus smartphone and the whole setup and connection took a couple of minutes. When turned on, the watch was automatically detected by the smartphone, then it was checked and installed the latest update and application recovery from the previous version of the watch (I used Samsung Galaxy Watch Classic 4 before).

The main screen depends on the selected watch face, it can display information such as time, date, day of the week, heart rate, number of steps taken, weather, pressure, etc. Above it is a screen with access to quick settings. Here you can adjust the brightness, enable NFC, WiFi, sound, etc. – all by analogy with a regular smartphone.

To the right of the main screen are cards with quick access to frequently used functions. The activity card comes first. It shows your daily indicators: the number of steps taken, the duration of activities, the number of calories burned. You can view statistics for previous days or a daily chart.

All this can be done both directly from the watch and from a smartphone. The application is called Samsung Health and allows you to get more detailed information and statistics for in-depth analysis. For convenience, I will show information from both the clock and the application.

The training card is next. The watch supports dozens of different sports programs. It has all the basic workouts: running, cycling, swimming or orbitrek. As well as a huge number of less common modes, such as skiing, rowing or team sports (football, handball, etc. ).

Some basic workouts are recognized automatically. For example, running or walking. During a workout, the main information is displayed on the screen: time, distance, average pace and, of course, heart rate. Each kilometer displays additional information on the time and pace for this segment.

All workouts are saved in the log and you can study detailed statistics later.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples of workouts, because it is with its sports features that Galaxy Watch watches stand out from the competition. Let’s take running. The map displays the movement track broken down by kilometers. You can enlarge the map and see in more detail. The fastest section is highlighted in red. Since the watch is equipped with GPS, you don’t need to take a smartphone for a run! All data is synchronized with the application automatically. Next, we see a summary graph, which displays the heart rate, pace, level of rise and cadence. Below it are the most significant moments of the run, such as climb, average cadence, pace, etc. Next, we see the heart rate zones and the time spent in each of them. There is a separate schedule for restoring the pulse after the end of the workout. Of course, there are statistics for each kilometer, which can be grouped into segments of 5 km or 10 km.

Loved the advanced running metrics that take into account ground contact time, time in the air, stiffness, asymmetry and other running metrics. This allows you to analyze the race and work on the bugs. In case of poor performance, you will be offered exercises to help improve them.

The watch can measure the maximum oxygen uptake during exercise. In addition to the numerical value in ml \ kg \ min, you will receive an informative graph and a breakdown of the indicators. To improve your running performance, it is important to maintain your VO2 max. Well, at the end there are general information about the training, such as: duration, distance, speed, pace, etc. Very cool features and incredibly detailed statistics. I have not seen such functionality in any application, even taking into account paid and sports-oriented ones.

In various sports programs, the information may differ slightly depending on the current activity, for example, in open water swimming, a track is recorded and the pulse is measured, and in the “football” mode, the track is not recorded as unnecessary.

Speaking of sports, it is worth noting the possibility of training programs that are available in Samsung Health. There are various fitness programs and programs for strength exercises. Separately, I note running programs that beginners can use. You will get a fully scheduled training schedule, and during training you will receive voice prompts (increase the speed to a certain value, decrease the speed to a certain value, etc.). There are even programs for those who are just taking their first steps in running or have never run at all.

And for those who don’t really like running and prefer to walk a lot, there are world walking competitions. In a playful way, you are offered to compete with people around the world. You go through various maps, see yourself in the rating of participants and at the end of the month you receive a reward in the form of a medal and a final achievement.

Every month a new competition. You can improve your score and earn new rewards.

You can also create your own competition among friends, acquaintances or even within your own family. For example, setting a goal to go as far as possible in a certain period of time. Or who will be the first to cover a certain distance. All this naturally teaches you to lead a more active lifestyle, which ultimately has a positive effect on well-being and health.

Moving on, the next card in the watch is responsible for a truly unique function: the measurement of body composition. With the help of a bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor, the watch will show the composition of your body. Namely: how much water is in it, how much fat and how much muscle tissue. Based on regular measurements, conclusions can be drawn about the adjustment of nutrition, the need to increase the load and other actions necessary to achieve the goal.

This function makes it easier to lose weight or gain weight. Detailed statistics are available for each of the indicators.

The sleep tracker will help you analyze the quality of your sleep, its duration and phases. On the watch, you can look at surface indicators and a preliminary assessment.

In the appendix, everything is described in more detail. There is also a unique opportunity to track your snoring. Snoring can interfere with sleep and also disturb those around you. It can also signal health problems. Therefore, it is worth monitoring this indicator, especially in conjunction with blood oxygen saturation (in order to exclude apnea). The clock will show the total snoring time, you can even listen to it (it is automatically recorded, after a month the data is deleted).

Next come the blood pressure and ECG cards, but I’ll put those features in a separate section and talk about them a little later.

Stress measurement may be of interest to those users who work in difficult psycho-emotional conditions. As usual, only the most basic things are on the watch.

And more details in the appendix. The measurement is performed automatically and pauses during exercise and sleep.

Blood oxygen saturation measurement. Doesn’t need a special introduction. The measurement can be carried out both in automatic mode and in manual mode. The indicators are very accurate. Compared with a medical oximeter, which is worn on the finger.

Other useful cards like daily totals, weather or music player. The music player can work both standalone (if you download music to the watch’s memory) and in conjunction with a smartphone, displaying information about the track with the ability to control. Of course, you can add cards from other applications, change their order or remove unnecessary ones.

For example, you can add an alarm clock card for its quick activation and configuration. If you use Galaxy Buds wireless headphones, you can control them directly from your watch. And if you play sports, you can add application cards that you actively use.

These were all cards with quick access to some functions and applications. But the capabilities of the watch are much wider and even pre-installed applications (without taking into account what can be installed additionally) show this well. The application menu is located below the main screen and there is also a lot of interesting things here.

For example, Google maps and navigation. It is very convenient when you are cycling! It works just like on a smartphone, i.e. it draws a track for you and informs you in advance about turns and other actions. There is also a compass, altimeter and barometer. For those who go to the mountains – an indispensable thing.

I won’t even talk about the standard ones: a voice recorder, a stopwatch or a remote photo. And of course, Google Play, which allows you to install dozens and hundreds of necessary applications. For example, install a Google wallet and pay for purchases in a supermarket.

I immediately installed STRAVA, Adidas running, Spotify and Facer. My minimum set for a smart watch.

Well, notifications are displayed to the left of the main screen. There are no character limits, messages are not truncated, Cyrillic is supported. There is an opportunity not only to read, but also to answer. Both in quick prepared phrases and by typing your own text using the on-screen keyboard.

Just in case, let me remind you that the watch supports conversations. If you take the WiFi version, you can receive calls and make calls using a Bluetooth connection. In the LTE version, this can be done without a smartphone, respectively. The speaker volume is normal, the microphone is sensitive. I use this feature most often when cycling.

This application works only on Samsung smartphones and allows you to measure blood pressure and take an ECG using your watch. Perhaps there are some alternative ways to run the application on other smartphones, I don’t know. Everything works out of the box with my Galaxy Note 10 Plus smartphone. First, let’s talk about the ECG (electrocardiogram). The description of the function says that the watch is not a medical device (it goes without saying) and based on the data obtained, you should not change medicines. If you suspect any health problems, you should consult a doctor.

Follow the instructions on the screen to create an ECG and see the result. Everything is saved on the smartphone, if you wish, you can open the cardiogram in full screen and study it in more detail. Well, if there are any suspicions, then send it to the attending physician. The watch is able to detect atrial fibrillation, in the future they promise to add detection of other pathologies.

Blood pressure is a bit more complicated. To use the function, initial calibration is required, i.e. you must first get (or already have) a shoulder tonometer.

Following the instructions on the screen, we do the calibration (3 consecutive measurements and data entry), after which we can measure blood pressure using the watch. Once a month it is necessary to re-calibrate.

I don’t know what kind of magic Samsung uses, but it’s definitely something forbidden. The watch measures blood pressure, and the result is quite accurate.

At first, I quite often double-checked the readings with a tonometer and always got the closest possible result. Toward the end of the month, the accuracy drops a little, which is why recalibration is required.

This is an application that helps you set up and manage your watch with your smartphone. It is more convenient to do the initial setup and installation of applications directly from this application. Let’s go through the main features.

Setting dials. Allows you to choose one of the pre-installed watch faces or download from an extensive database. Almost all watch faces are customizable. You can choose the displayed information, design, background color, arrows, font, etc.

Here you can also install watch faces from third-party applications. For example, I use the Facer application, which has a huge database of watch faces (thousands) with constant replenishment. And there are both paid dials and free ones.

You can also customize the application screen, cards, and quick access bar through Galaxy Wearable. All elements are moved, removed and added.

And of course the clock settings. Everything here is like in Android smartphones, even the sections are named the same. You can configure access to your account, WiFi and Bluetooth connections, notifications from applications.

Here you can also set vibration, ringtone and notification volume, select a melody. Screen settings – brightness, Always On Display, gesture support, touch sensitivity, etc.

    • Physical watch buttons can be customized and remapped
    • By connecting to a computer or synchronizing the watch with a smartphone, you can upload music and images to the internal memory. There is automatic synchronization of music (downloaded to a smartphone and it automatically goes to the clock)
    • There is an over-the-air update, periodically adding new features and improving functionality. For example, in the latest update, the function of measuring body temperature was added to more accurately predict ovulation in women.

Some of the security features are also interesting. For example, the SOS mode, when the watch will send your coordinates to the specified contacts. Or fall detection, which also sends data with your location to pre-specified people.

Perhaps the most controversial moment. All users are divided into 2 categories: those who need the watch to work at least a day and those who want autonomy per week, two, or even more. I was originally in the second camp, because my first Amazfit Bip watch could work on a single charge for about a month. But they knew almost nothing and their only task was to notify. The Galaxy Watch 5 smart watch is another matter. The Wear OS consumes battery faster, GPS works during training, sensors are constantly working, a bright display with AOD and much more – all this quickly drains the battery. And when I switched to the Galaxy Watch, I realized that I don’t need 2 weeks of autonomy. The watch charges very quickly. I still take a shower every night. And while I’m swimming, the clock has time to recharge. There is absolutely no problem to recharge them with wireless charging, which is always available on the table.

As for the actual autonomy of the Galaxy Watch 5, it ranges from 1 to 2 days, depending on the intensity of use. With very active use, I have enough for a day. At the same time, I automatically monitor all the data in real time (stress, pulse, blood oxygen saturation, etc.), the AOD display is always on, I train at least 2 hours a day (running or cycling with GPS turned on), as well as periodic conversations through the clock and a large number of notifications from instant messengers. I think this is normal autonomy. The only time it may not be enough is a long track recording, for example, many hours of hiking or cycling. GPS consumes a lot of power. A small test: I went for a walk with a fully charged watch and turned on the GPS (walking workout) at 16:05. Returned at 20:00 with a residual charge of 44%. That is, in 4 hours GPS used up 56%. The consumption was about 14% per hour. A full charge is enough for 7 hours of route recording. Well, pretty good, although hiking may require recharging (fortunately, many Samsung smartphones have a reverse charge function and this can be done even on the go).

The watch is definitely one of the best on the market, especially if you are not intimidated by the need for daily charging. They are very functional and flexible in terms of capabilities, because they work on the Wear OS operating system. Personally, I really liked the health and sports functions, I have not seen such interesting functionality in other models. Those who run and ride a bike will definitely like the watch. Among other things, they are also suitable for swimming, there are corresponding programs. I also note the excellent materials, for a year of not the most accurate use without a film, the watch did not receive a single scratch.
