Why not all RAM is available in Windows

If you right-click on the “This PC” icon and select Properties , you may find that the computer sees all the installed RAM, but less is available. I will explain what “RAM available” means, why this happens and how to deal with it.

“RAM available” – this means the system uses exactly the amount of memory that is available. The reasons why the available RAM is less than the installed one, and the methods for solving them, are described below by category.

BIOS settings

Perhaps the most common problem is when 8 GB (or 6 GB) of RAM is installed, and 4 GB is available, maybe less.

Option 1. Do not hesitate to restart the computer, when you turn it on, enter the BIOS. Go to the tab Advanced , select Chipset Configuration ,

find the line Memory Remap Feature , change Disabled to Enabled .

Save the settings and exit by pressing the F10 key. The location of the “Memory Remap Feature” may differ from the one indicated above, since the bios are different. After loading Windows, we again check the available memory, it should be like this.

Option 2. If the RAM settings in the BIOS are set to Manual, then select Auto instead. Or, if you cannot find this parameter, then reset the BIOS to Default (by default), this will reset the parameters to the factory state. However, individual items may need to be adjusted. Before exiting the interface, remember to save your settings.

Memory limit in Windows boot options

Another common cause is when the operating system limits the use of all RAM in the boot options. You can fix it simply, you just need to do the following:

Open the Run window using the Win + R key combination, enter the command msconfig and press Enter.

Go to the “Download” tab, click on the Advanced Options button.

Uncheck the box next to “Maximum memory” and click OK.

Close the rest of the “Downloads” page by clicking OK, reboot the system, check the amount of available memory.

Windows version does not support the installed amount of memory even if you install 8 GB, it can use a maximum of 4 GB.

Many users are unaware that each version of the Windows operating system supports a certain maximum amount of RAM. As noted above, x86 uses a maximum of 4 GB of RAM in all versions of Windows. And now let’s get acquainted with the support of RAM in x64 bit operating systems:

Windows 7

  • Starter x86 2 GB
  • Home x64 8 GB
  • Home Premium x64 16 GB
  • Professional x64 192 GB
  • Enterprise x64 192 GB
  • Ultimate x64 192 GB

Windows 8/8.1

  • Home x64 128 GB
  • Professional x64 512 GB
  • Enterprise x64 512 GB

Windows 10

  • Home x64 128 GB
  • Pro x64 512 GB

Windows 11

  • Home x64 128 GB
  • Pro x64 2 TB
  • Pro for Workstations x64 6TB
  • For educational institutions (Education) x64 2 tb
  • Corporate (Enterprise) x64 6 tb

By comparing your version of Windows with the information in the table, you can draw a conclusion, and if this is not a solution to your problem, then read the article further .

The processor does not support the amount of memory

One more point worth paying attention to is the central processing unit (CPU). Many past generation processors can use no more than 8 or 16 GB of memory. Information about maximum memory support can be found on the official website of the cpu manufacturer.

The memory is used by the integrated video card

And perhaps another option why not all RAM is available is the use of the integrated graphics core for video memory.

As a rule, an integrated video card takes 128MB-2GB for video memory. That is, if you have 4 GB of RAM installed, and 3.87 GB are available, then conclude that the built-in video card is eating up. All this is not critical and you can just close your eyes to it.

In cases where an additional discrete video card is present in a computer or laptop, you can try to disable the integrated one through the BIOS. Unfortunately, not all models support disabling the graphics core. But if you succeeded, then the memory should become available in full. In some BIOS versions, it is possible to change the size of the used video memory.

Hardware problem reading RAM stick

There have been cases when part of the RAM became unavailable after the computer freezes. That is, the computer is tightly frozen with a static image or an incident on the screen, only a forced shutdown through the power or on button helps.

The fact is that for some reason the computer can take the RAM into a short circuit or something like that. In this case, it will show in the operating system, for example – 16GB (8GB available), and in the BIOS 8GB and that’s it. Turn off the computer, unplug it from the outlet, press the start button to discharge the power supply, remove all RAM sticks. Next, in reverse order, insert all the memory sticks, connect to the mains, turn it on and check.

Incorrect Windows settings

It also happens that Windows does not work correctly, and therefore limits the used RAM. You can check the malfunction of the operating system simply by booting a bootable WinPE flash drive, for example, Strelec. If the boot system shows the full volume, then you need to reinstall Windows, the problem will disappear by itself.

Well, that’s all, now you know the reasons why the available RAM is less than the installed one. Share your situation and I will try to help.

Why your browser is clogging RAM. And what to do

A common problem: the Internet browser takes up a lot of RAM and interferes with other software. Hi-Tech Mail.ru figured out why this is happening, whether Chrome is deservedly scolded and how to solve the problem.

Why so much memory?

Chrome one?

Other browsers

Chrome, why do you need a lot of RAM?

The Internet has become more perfect and, consequently, pages have taken up more RAM. Web pages with static content have been replaced by full-fledged web applications. If you have an article, a social network and a video open in three tabs, then you have three different applications open. Hence they require more RAM than static web pages.

Google Chrome requires a lot of RAM space due to the nature of its work – it’s all about multiprocessing. When processing data, the browser separates each page, plug-in and extension into a separate process, so the program takes up more RAM during operation. To verify this, open the context menu and go to “Additional tools” -\u003e “Task Manager”. Each page and extension will have its own .exe file, these are the processes.

Content not available

Multiprocessing provides two benefits:

  • stable browser operation – if one page freezes, others will still continue to work stably.
  • fast loading of web pages. Websites, plugins, and players are created using different technologies, and the browser needs to process them differently. By separating each page into a separate process, the browser simplifies its work and loads them faster.

Counterbalance – in multi-process mode, the browser requires a lot of RAM, so it is difficult to use it simultaneously with other programs running.

Is Chrome the only memory problem?

Content not available

No, this applies to many browsers. Not one “Chrome” runs in multi-process mode. Mozilla Firefox pages are processed in the same way, as are Chromium-based browsers: Opera and others.

Chrome takes up no more RAM than others. We opened 5 identical tabs on it and Firefox, all extensions were disabled. It turned out that Mozilla takes up more space than the Google browser. Gavin Phillips, author of Make Use Of, got a similar result: he opened the same tabs in 5 browsers at the same time, Firefox and Safari took up more space than Chrome.

Mozilla’s history has proven that multi-processing is a good idea. The developers also added it for more stable client operation, although they left the option to switch to single-process mode in the settings. As a result, the browser began to take up more RAM, but became more reliable.

Content not available

So Chrome is more power hungry than other browsers?

Still yes. In addition to RAM, it heavily loads the CPU and battery. Click on the battery button on your computer and see a list of high energy programs. There will definitely be “Chrome” if you use it.

However, Google is working on a fix. Power consumption is still high, but it is decreasing. In January of this year, a test showed that Microsoft Edge consumes 19% less energy than Chrome, while in April last year it needed 70% less charge. So Google is working on reducing power consumption, and the gap is closing.

How can I solve the problem?

This question is especially important when using both a demanding application like a graphics editor and a browser. In this case, three solutions are relevant:

Choose a computer with more RAM. Notebooks with 8 GB of RAM will not be able to cope with the work of demanding software and the Google browser at the same time for a long time. If professional tasks are a priority, consider devices with 16 GB of RAM or more.

Buy more RAM. If you’re using a build PC, it’s easy to buy more RAM. If you choose a laptop, see the previous paragraph. Replacing a component on a laptop is more difficult, and when you open the case, the warranty is lost.

Close tabs (But how?) . If among the open pages there are those that are postponed for later, bookmark them and close. Coolers will roar faster with them and throttling will begin, you won’t be able to work normally.

Also remember that the type of open pages also directly affects the amount of RAM used. If you have three tabs with videos, correspondence and news feed active, the load will be much greater than if it were three tabs with articles.

Monitor sites and extensions.
