Now we will not consider a huge study or entertainment center, in which you could probably install the largest TV. Consider a typical living space—your room or hall.

How far to watch 4K TV

The question “How far to watch TV” refers to the distance that depends on the size of your room, more specifically, the distance from where you sit to the screen. Also, the choice of diagonal depends on the number of people watching TV at the same time.

In other words, first choose the place where the TV will stand and the seat where you are going to watch it. Then measure the distance to the TV. Depending on this distance, you should choose a TV with a diagonal size that is comfortable for viewing.

TV Distance Recommendations and Calculations

There is a direct correlation between the recommended screen size and the distance to the viewer. The greater the distance, the larger your TV should be. The ideal is the kind of screen that fills a certain field of view, although the term “ideal” requires further discussion and interpretation.

THX (High Quality Home Theater System Total Requirements Standard) recommends, for example, a 40-degree viewing angle as being optimal for “fullness of view”. What does 40 degrees mean to the viewer?

For example, most users prefer to be 9 feet (108 inches or 2.74 m) away from the TV, so THX recommends a screen size of 90 inches for that distance. This means that a 55-inch TV will not be the largest, at least not in these recommendations. Therefore, the recommendation is to install a 60-inch screen at a distance of 2.74 meters from the browser.

SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends a 30-degree view, slightly less than the THX recommendation. To calculate the distance according to these recommendations, you need to multiply the distance between the viewer and the TV screen by 0. 625. Thus, given our distance (in the example) of 2.74 meters, the diagonal of the TV screen should be 68 inches (the average between a diagonal of 65 and 70). However, we understand that not everyone has the opportunity to install such a large TV due to the space of the room.

CNET, after joining this question, recommends being no closer than 1.5 times the screen diagonal, or using a multiplier of 0.667 to calculate the same distance. These calculations result in a “slightly larger” TV screen size for your space than the SMPTE recommendations. So the maximum size is 72 inches (closest is 70 inches) for our calculated distance of 2.7 m. It is too easy to get addicted to mathematical numbers and calculations, when in fact reality is far from theory and much more complicated. In everyday life, additional factors always happen, and these calculations do not work “for one or two”.

Beyond Rule

There are two factors to consider when discussing maximum screen size: screen resolution and distance from the TV screen. Most TVs are 1080p, which is a lot of pixels on a screen. Even on the largest flat screen sizes available today, you can’t see pixels from 2.7 meters away.

If your TV (or projector) is not of high quality, you may see various picture artifacts such as picture noise or poor anti-aliasing, but you are unlikely to see pixels. If you position yourself at a shorter distance to such a TV, then the pixels may become visible (but this is at too close a distance).

This is one of the reasons we think Ultra HD (4K) TVs are “stupid” due to the sheer number of pixels that the human eye can actually see. Technology and mathematics win over organics.

So, very large TVs may not look as good when you are very close to them. It’s good if you’re watching a high quality source like a Blu-ray disc on a 4K player. The most “curve” option is viewing SD or HD content that has undergone upscaling (scaling).

Another factor is the dominance of the room over the available space. Naturally, this is a purely subjective factor. The question is, what is the largest TV that “should” take up space in your room to prevent it from becoming the dominant device in the room (figuratively and literally)?

You can go the simple way. Print or cut out of cardboard a TV screen of the appropriate size that you dream of or know its physical dimensions from the characteristics, and place the “mockup” in the installation location. So to say, really look. But you need to take into account the moment that in fact the TV will be a little larger than your cardboard. Of course, it depends on your room, decor and the opinions of your loved ones, which is worth considering.

In our opinion, the recommendations of organizations such as SMPTE and THX are somewhat too high for 4K TVs to be taken as a basis.
