How to Measure for Standard Dishwasher Sizes

Finding the right dimensions for your dishwasher before you shop can help eliminate the guesswork as you determine what depth, width and height best fits your kitchen’s layout.

From standard to small space, this guide can help you measure your cabinet opening, make decisions on interior layout, and ultimately find the right size dishwasher for your family.

How to measure for a dishwasher in 3 easy steps

Discovering the dimensions for your dishwasher is a simple process that can save you from the headaches of an ill-fitting unit down the road. Track down your measuring tape, then follow the steps below to learn how to measure the width, depth and height of your dishwasher opening.

Total time estimate

5 – 10 minutes

Difficulty

Easy

Step 1. Measure for dishwasher width

Standard cabinet opening width vs. small space cabinet opening width:

  • Measure from cabinet to cabinet, making sure that the sides of your dishwasher will be completely enclosed once installed. It’s better to leave a little breathing room on each side than to have it be a tight fit.

  • You can install close to a wall or cabinet on one side as long as you leave at least two inches between it and the side of the dishwasher door.

Planning Tip:

Utility placement can vary by model, so check your installation instructions for the specifics.

Step 2. Measure for dishwasher depth

  • Measure from the back of the opening to the front.

  • Make sure to leave enough room (at least 27 inches) in front of the dishwasher to comfortably load and unload dishes, plus enough room to move around between the open door and any counters and islands.

Installing a dishwasher with a panel may affect depth.

Step 3. Measure for dishwasher height

Additional layers of flooring in the kitchen may impact your installation process.

Are there different sizes of dishwashers?

Dishwashers typically fall into one of four size categories: standard, oversized, compact and portable. The dimensions of dishwashers installed in cabinetry only vary by width, while portable dishwashers are often deeper and taller than built-in models.

As you measure for your space and shop for the best fit, keep in mind that the dimensions of dishwashers are determined by the opening size they’re made to fit, rather than the measurements of the dishwasher. A dishwasher labeled as 24 inches wide might actually be more like 23-1/2 inches wide.

Standard built-in dishwasher dimensions

A standard dishwasher is about 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 35 inches high. Most cabinet openings are made to fit a standard dishwasher size. Note that certain handles may affect the overall dishwasher depth

Oversized built-in dishwasher dimensions

Oversized dishwashers are built wider than the standard opening. An oversized dishwasher is about 30 to 42 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 35 inches high.

Small space or compact built-in dishwasher dimensions

Designed for apartments, space-conscious homes and entertainment spaces, small space dishwashers have a slimmer width than standard dishwashers.  A compact dishwasher is about 18 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 35 inches high.

Portable, in-sink and countertop dishwasher dimensions

Portable, in-sink and countertop dishwashers should not require an opening in your cabinetry, but you’ll still need to measure where they’ll go. Portable dishwashers are typically about 24 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 37 inches high.  Learn more about how a portable dishwasher works.

Does a dishwasher need space around it?

To make sure you have plenty of room for loading and unloading, keep at least 27 inches of open space in front of the dishwasher. If you plan to install your dishwasher in a corner location, give it at least 2 inches of space between the side of the open door and wall or cabinet.

How much space should be between the countertop and the dishwasher?

Standard dishwashers are designed to fit common dishwasher cavity dimensions and typically run one-half to one-third of an inch smaller than the opening. This naturally provides all of the wiggle room the dishwasher needs to fit properly within the cavity between cabinets. Double-check your dishwasher’s installation manual to find out if there’s a minimum requirement for space between the dishwasher and countertop.

Should the dishwasher be flush with the cabinet?

Aligning the dishwasher door panel with the front of the cabinet doors helps provide a sleek aesthetic in the kitchen. Dishwashers with a pocket handle can align completely with kitchen cabinets, while those with bar handles will likely protrude past the face of cabinets.

Getting the right layout

At some point, you’ll need to decide whether you want a front control or top control dishwasher. Front control dishwashers let you easily see and select cycles, while top control dishwashers hide controls for a more streamlined look.

You’ll also need to think about your dishwasher’s interior. The exterior dimensions of a dishwasher rarely affect the interior capacity, but there are other ways to add increased space for dishes. Many dishwashers have two racks, but dishwashers with a 3rd Rack give you extra room for hard to fit items. When selecting your dishwasher you’ll also want to take into consideration the need for a dishwasher air gap and how much space will be taken up in your kitchen during installation.

What are the sizes of dishwashers

Dishwashers have firmly entered our everyday life. Now, in almost any kitchen, a place is laid in advance for them. Water during the operation of the PMM is consumed much less than when washing the same volume of dishes by hand. There are no problems with cleaning pans, pots, processing children’s dishes, including bottles, and, of course, time is saved. Most models are built-in, closed with a decorative facade. They fit perfectly into the interior of the kitchen.

Modern manufacturers offer customers dishwashers of various capacities, and, therefore, of various sizes. PMM dimensions depend on several parameters:

  • installation method: fully or partially built-in, free-standing;
  • the number of sets of dishes for which the PMM is designed. (For a large family, you will need a machine for 10 or more sets, which include: deep and shallow plates, cup and saucer, cutlery. For one person or a couple, a device for 3-6 sets is enough). .

Standard sizes of freestanding dishwashers, regardless of installation methods, are divided into four large groups:

  • full size;
  • narrow;
  • compact;
  • desktop.

Dimensions of full size freestanding dishwashers

Full-size freestanding units have a standard height of about 85 cm for kitchen furniture and can be installed flush with the countertop. Their width is 60 cm, and their depth is from 57 to 64 cm.

These are high-performance units with a capacity of 12 sets of dishes with an electronic control system and a large set of automatic programs, as well as reliable protection against leaks.

In the Hausdorf online store, you can pay attention to free-standing Smeg dishwashers in retro style – elegant, stylish models in rich colors: for example, the bright red Smeg LVFABRD.

Miele dishwashers

Dishwashers Asko

Neff dishwashers

Bosch dishwashers

Narrow dishwasher size

Narrow free-standing machines with the same standard height and depth (85 cm and 60 cm, respectively) range from 44.6 to 45 cm in width. They allow you to wash up to 9 to 10 sets of dishes in one cycle and are practically not inferior to full-sized ones in the number of modes and ease of management.

The models presented in Hausdorf have a washing and drying class A and an energy efficiency class of A and above. The most popular Bosch SPS25FW11R has 5 standard programs and a 9-hour delay start.

Dimensions of compact dishwashers

Compact free-standing models are much smaller in height – 44-45 cm. Their depth is 50 cm, and their width is 55 cm, which is somewhat smaller than the dimensions of a standard countertop. They use a condensation type of drying, and the capacity is 5-6 sets of dishes.

These devices can be put on a table, under a sink, on a shelf – the main thing is that the length of the hoses and cable is enough for a proper connection. From 5 to 7 built-in programs cope with washing any dishes.

Desktop stand-alone machines stand out in a separate group, although they almost do not differ from compact ones in terms of parameters.

So, the desktop model Maunfeld MLP 06S reaches a height of 43.8 cm, and its depth and width are 50 and 55 cm. 6 temperature modes and 6 standard programs, delayed start, capacity for 6 sets, low noise level – these are its advantages.

Built-in dishwasher dimensions

Built-in dishwashers are in constant demand and have a wide range. These devices are practical, have a lower noise level due to embedding, and are less exposed to external influences. The decorative facade allows you to decorate the kitchen in the same style.

Full-size built-in machines do not differ in height from other built-in appliances that should fit under a standard worktop – about 82 cm. Their depth is 55-56 cm, and their width is 60 cm. They are able to wash up to 12 to 16 sets of dishes.

Devices with a large selection of washing programs, including silent night and economic, hygienic and quick in half an hour. They are equipped with the most modern drying methods – zeolite, turbo and others. So, the most popular Asko D5536 XL dishwasher has an energy class of A+++, and the number of washing programs reaches 11.

Narrow built-in models with a height of 81-81 cm and a depth of 55 cm in width are from 44 to 45 cm. Many of them can change the height of the legs, and, accordingly, the height of the niche for embedding.

So, the Neff S581F50X2R model with a width of 44.8 cm has a minimum height of 81.5 cm, and a maximum height of 87.5 cm and can be installed in a cabinet or niche of different heights. This model holds 10 place settings. And the height of the Kuppersberg GL 4588 model with 8 washing programs can vary from 82 to 90 cm.

Compact built-in machines are only 44 cm high, 55 cm wide and 50 cm deep. Their capacity, despite their modest dimensions, is quite large – up to 6 sets of dishes.

The package of programs includes everything you need: express, intensive, economical, fast and others. Such devices can be installed in an ordinary cabinet, leaving room for an additional drawer below, and also under the sink or in a closet along with other compact appliances.

For example, Electrolux ESL2450W with turbo dryer and 6 place settings has an electronic control system, very low energy consumption and water consumption.

How to choose built-in dishes washing machine expert advice

A dishwasher makes sense for many reasons:
  • water consumption is 3 – 5 times less than when washing dishes in the usual way:
  • washes dirt better;
  • saves the owner’s time.

There are different types of dishwashers, differing in configuration and installation method, functional options, classes and special features. We will analyze them in this article and give tips for making the right choice.
Views by installation method
There are several ways to integrate machines into a kitchen set.
  1. Fully built-in – built-in dishwashers are installed in a niche in the middle of kitchen cabinets under the worktop. A furniture facade is attached to their door, the device literally merges with the interior and outwardly looks the same as all kitchen cabinets. The control panel of the device is hidden, there is a start button on the top of the door, which is convenient and prevents children from accidentally turning on the device.

  2. Countertop – miniature dishwashers, great for small kitchens. The width of such a device is 45 cm, and the weight is approximately 24 kg. These machines are designed for washing a small amount of dishes, and the dimensions allow them to be installed not only on the countertop, but also inside cabinets or on a shelf. This version of the car is perfect for a small family.

  3. Partially recessed – devices are installed in a niche between kitchen cabinets under the worktop, but are not closed with a facade under the kitchen interior and stand out from the general background. The control panel is located on the outside at the top of the door and the start button is available for accidental start.

Choose a suitable place for installing the dishwasher, considering the following recommendations:
  • water supply and discharge, the source of electricity must be located in close proximity to the location of the machine;
  • loading dishes into the machine and opening / closing the door should be free, no pieces of furniture and other equipment should interfere;
  • the instrument must be placed on a perfectly level surface.

  1. Full size are appliances of standard dimensions, installed in a niche of a kitchen set. They have a height of no more than 80-88 cm, can be placed near the sink or in place of a kitchen cabinet under the countertop. Full-sized dishwashers, as a rule, have a depth of up to 60 centimeters. The standard width is also 60 cm, but some models reach 80 cm in width.

  1. Narrow – has a standard height, but has a smaller width and depth. These devices can be installed in a niche under the worktop. Their width is 45 – 50 cm, depth is up to 60 cm, and the height is the same as the height of full-size machines: 80 -88 cm.

  2. Compact – appliances are installed directly on the countertop or inside the cabinet due to their small size. Compact machines with a height of 44 – 45 cm, a depth of up to 60 cm and a width of 55 cm are perfectly placed under the kitchen sink.

Some built-in machines are equipped with screw-in feet for height adjustment.

What to look for when choosing?

When buying a dishwasher for your home, you need to not only choose the size and capacity, but also look at how much energy it consumes and how quiet it works.
Water consumption
Water consumption averages 9 – 14 liters per wash. In all brands of cars, this indicator is different. The device uses the same water several times before the final rinse. According to the volume of water used, dishwashers are divided into classes:
  • A, B, C – highly economical: 7-16 liters per cycle;

  • D, E – medium economy dishwashers: 17-20 liters per cycle;

  • F, G – low economy: 21-26 liters.

Popular brands currently produce only highly economical modifications of classes A, B, C.

They use a minimum amount of water and significantly save electricity. Moreover, many housewives are trying to further reduce the water consumption in washing machines by applying the following methods:

  • use detergent capsules;
  • include economy mode;
  • use the half load function.
Now the vast majority of modifications belong to the most economical class A.
Electricity consumption
The higher the class of the machine, the less electricity it uses. Since now only economical devices are produced, we will indicate the amount of energy consumption only for them:
Dishwasher manufacturers have started producing A+ and A+++ class devices with even lower power consumption values of 0.6 and 0.4 kW.
Of course, the more economical the equipment, the more expensive its cost.
Noise level
We recommend choosing models with a reinforced noise-reducing housing.

The buzz of the machine will be kept to a minimum. The noise level should not exceed 64 dB. On average, in many modern devices this level is 42 – 45 dB.

Functionality

Dishwashers are equipped with many features for comfortable use. Let’s take a look at a few:
Maxi Space – Third Tray
The three-basket system allows you to effectively manage the interior space of the machine. The 3rd tray is located at the top and is designed to accommodate small cups, saucers, forks, ladles, spoons, which are laid out horizontally in separate niches. This arrangement contributes to better washing of cutlery, and frees up space for the rest of the dishes. Thus, a dishwasher with three baskets allows more efficient use of space.

Beam on the floor
The laser indicator is mainly mounted in fully built-in machine models. Since this device is completely hidden from the hostess’s field of vision, a green light point on the floor signals that the wash is finished.

And the red color of the beam indicates that the washing process continues.

It’s also very handy when you can’t use the horn.
In some modifications, “Ray” projects on the floor information about how much time is left until the end of the wash.
Timer and delay start
The washing process may not start immediately, but at a time specified by the user. The minimum start time delay can be 1 to 3 hours, depending on the model. The maximum start time delay can be 24 hours. To set the desired delay start time, the dishwasher is equipped with a built-in timer.
Modes
Dishwashers can be pre-set to different modes, depending on the amount of dishes, the degree of soiling. type of dishes, etc.
Eco
For lightly soiled dishes, it is recommended to start the economy wash programme. The cycle temperature will be lowered and the cycle time will be increased, thereby achieving savings.
Eco mode performs pre-cleaning, main wash at 45 – 55 degrees, one-time rinse (at 50 – 65 degrees).

As a result, the dishes will be washed to a shine with a minimum of water, powder and electricity.
“Automatic” mode
After pressing the start button, the machine automatically adjusts to the optimal mode thanks to sensors that determine the weight of dishes, the degree of soiling, the volume of cleaning powder, etc. The whole cycle can take 2-3 hours.
Half load
With this mode, it is not necessary to fill the machine full of used dishes. Resources in this case are used less than when fully loaded. This mode in modern machines is supported by sensors that determine all the necessary parameters and calculate the required amount of resources.
The ½ function can be started in all wash modes. It allows you to wash a small amount of dishes, and the wash ends faster.
The downside is that the use of capsules or tablets is not entirely suitable here, as they will not dissolve completely in a short wash. Capsules should not be used at all, and tablets can be manually split in half.
