Hard drives 2.5″ and 3.5″: which one to choose?

In the article, we will consider in detail how these two form factors of disks differ, and in what areas they are in demand.

A few years ago, hard drives were chosen solely by volume and manufacturer. But now, when buying a drive, the user first of all encounters the concept of form factor. On sale you will find disks in the size 2,5” and 3,5”.

Brief educational program

The hard drive is an important element in the structure of each computer, which is responsible for the long-term storage of information. You may come across various names for this device – hard drive, screw, disk drive or HDD. In all cases, we will talk about one device.

The operation of hard drives is based on the principle of energy independence of memory. That is, unlike RAM, the information on the device is not reset when the computer is turned off.

A hard disk storage array consists of several round plates. The plates themselves are made of aluminum or glass-ceramic. The latter option is used less frequently due to the high cost and fragility of the material. But only a coating of a ferromagnetic alloy, most often of chromium dioxide, is involved in recording and storing information.

The plates are placed with a small gap and are united by an axis called the spindle. The rotation speed of the plates is set by the motor. And the recording and reading of information is performed by the head located on the rotary frame. The processes of writing and reading are controlled by their own electronic circuit – the controller.

Differences between the two form factors

3.5″ hard drives measure 101.6 x 25.4 x 146mm. When marking such drives, the abbreviation LFF – Large Form Factor is used.

2.5” hard drives are available in several variants. Drives measuring 69.85 x 7 x 100 mm are the most common format. Sometimes the thickness of the disc can be 5mm. Drives measuring 69.85 x 15 x 100 mm are also common. But this thickness does not allow them to be used in laptops. Compact discs are labeled SFF, which stands for Small Form Factor.

It is traditionally believed that 3.5” drives are intended for installation in desktop computers, and compact models are the lot of laptops, the internal space of which is significantly limited. But in recent years, these differences are gradually blurred.

Moreover, some manufacturers have announced the cessation of production of certain models of 3.5” hard drives, despite their demand and popularity. Only 2.5” analogues remained in the catalogs.

Thus, in recent years, the choice of 3.5” hard drives has been steadily decreasing, but the range still outnumbers the smaller form factor by almost half.

Which wheels do you prefer?

Compact hard drives are widely used as external media. They are also installed in the recently popular compact Cube format cases and other mini PC models.

If we talk about productive systems, then here the advantage is also on the side of small-sized 2.5 ”. A disk system equipped with such drives takes up less space, which is especially appreciated when assembling servers. Firstly, this approach allows you to assemble compact systems. And secondly, to use the available space in the structure of high-performance servers as efficiently as possible.

For example, a 2U server rack can fit 12 3.5” hard drives or up to 26 2.5” hard drives. In a 4U rack, respectively, 24 and 48 with front panel access, or up to 36 and 76 with two-way access.

And now the main point: the capacity, rotation speed and other technical characteristics of similar drives of the same manufacturer in the form factors 3.5” and 2.5” are identical. That is, they contain an equal amount of user data. And the same amount of time is spent on writing and reading information. At the same time, the maximum available volume for 2.5 ” models is currently 5 TB.

Therefore, the use of compact 2.5” hard drives doubles the storage capacity. At the same time, the working space is significantly saved. Also, the advantage of compact discs is economical power consumption and moderate heating.

In addition, a larger number of disks in the server structure allows you to create high-level RAID arrays, which positively affects both the speed of writing and reading, and the reliability of such an information storage system.

Another plus is the compatibility of hard drives with solid state drives, which will allow you to upgrade the system in the future without the cost of mounting equipment, replacing the HDD with an SSD. But for this, the SSD and HDD interfaces must match: sata or sas.

There is also a kind of hybrid version. These are 2.5” in 3.5” hard drive models. In fact, this is an intermediate solution, which is a regular 2.5” drive installed in a 3.5” case. These solutions apply to vendor machines. They are designed for those scenarios when you need to add high-speed SSD drives or additional HDD capacity to large HDD volumes.

At the same time, the case is not just a kind of adapter. A control chip can be installed in it, which, together with vendor binding, makes it impossible to use disks outside the profile system format.
