Asus Teases Its First 27-Inch, OLED Gaming Monitor

When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

(Image credit: Twitter – ROG Global)

Asus has teased an all-new, 240 Hz 1440p ROG gaming monitor featuring OLED display panel technology in a Twitter post by ROG Global. The monitor is called the PG27AQDM, and it will be Asus’ first OLED gaming monitor with a normal display size of just 27 inches. The monitor will be fully unveiled during CES 2023, where we can expect detailed specifications, first impressions, and hopefully the monitor’s price – which will likely be very expensive.

In the sneak peak, we get a glimpse at the monitor’s design language, featuring the same red and grey ROG theme as other ROG monitors, and the same triple-legged stand. What is different though, is the monitor’s razor thin shroud surrounding the outer edges of the display. This is an attribute of OLED’s self-illuminating technology which requires less overall depth from the monitor to function, in comparison to other display technologies, and gives the panel a futuristic design.

Image 1 of 3

(Image credit: Twitter – ROG Global)(Image credit: Twitter – ROG Global)(Image credit: Twitter – ROG Global)

At 27 inches, the PG27AQDM is the smallest sized OLED monitor we’ve seen yet from Asus to date. This alone will be a key feature for most gamers, since Asus’ previous OLED implementations only existed in large format displays featuring sizes of over 40 inches. The 27-inch form factor is very advantageous for users who sit at normal monitor viewing distances and still want all the advantages OLED can offer. Most of the best gaming monitors are either 27 or 32 inches.

With the monitor packing a 240 Hz refresh rate and 1440p (2560 x 1440) display, Asus is undoubtedly targeting  hardcore gamers, who desire the most responsive panel they can get their hands on. OLED technology, is intrinsically great in this area — with not only great colors and brightness to more accurately see enemies, but also industry-leading response times.

A good example of this is LG’s new 27′ UltraGear OLED gaming monitor, which features a response time of just 0. 03ms. In comparison, most other gaming monitors that don’t feature OLED tech, sit in the 1ms range or 0.5 ms range at best. We don’t know the exact OLED panel Asus is using or its specifications, but we expect its response times to be similar to other OLED panels.

The gaming character of the model hints at a response time of 1 ms and a refresh rate of up to 170 Hz. The rest of the characteristics are quite standard, as for mid-budget monitors.

Package contents ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQA1A

The monitor is packed securely, the manufacturer spared no foam. Inside the box is paper documentation, a stand, mounting hardware, a network cable, a power supply, a Display Port cable, and the monitor itself.

From the very beginning, stickers are striking, frightening the buyer with a high level of class F power consumption. They say that this is a very inefficient monitor. We will take measurements with a wattmeter and check if this is true.

External power supply, laptop-like, power 65 W. The power connector is proprietary, so you can’t just connect a power bank with a USB Type C cable for autonomous power.

Appearance, interfaces, sound

The quality of the case is average – the gaps between the screen surface and the frame are clearly visible, but nothing creaks or lags behind. The back panel is plastic, as are all the controls. The keys are large, it’s hard to miss them, the joystick is well located, ergonomic.

The 27-inch screen has a matte finish that handles daylight well, but still picks up fingerprints easily.

The height of the stand is not adjustable, the user can only change the tilt of the screen in a small range. You can’t rotate the monitor 90 degrees either.

Best needed

There is a VESA 100×100 mount on the back panel, which will allow you to mount it on the wall. Engineers have not forgotten about Kensington Lock either. The connector panel hides two HDMIs, one DP, 3.5mm audio, power jack and USB Type A.

When connecting an HDMI cable, you can set it to no more than 144 Hz. The Display Port runs at 165Hz by default, but the monitor is overclocked to 170Hz. Sound is transmitted via both HDMI and DP. The speakers are weak (2×2 W), but you can watch a movie.

The sound is relatively flat, and the lower frequencies are slightly perceptible. As for the built-in acoustics, it is not bad, although there is nothing to praise it for. Gamers will still use headphones most of the time. They can be connected to a 3.5mm jack directly to the monitor.

Settings ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQA1A

You can change monitor settings using the convenient joystick and keys on the rear panel. The user gets used to such a control scheme in a few minutes, the navigation is simple, and the menu is clear.

Completely standard settings, like most modern monitors. You can select display modes, change overclocking options, adjust volume, brightness, contrast, color palette, etc.

It seems that there is nothing interesting, but let’s talk about the “sight” option, which places a virtual intersection in the center of the screen. This is a useful feature for gamers who often play Counter Strike or Battlefield and love sniper rifles. This allows you to shoot from the hip, which can help win fights at close range.

Screen ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQA1A

Colorimeter test showed that the VA panel is far from ideal in terms of color reproduction: sRGB 95%, NTSC 71%, Adobe RGB 75%, P3 75%. It seems to be the usual indicators for budget-class VA monitors.

Switching to the FPS game mode slightly worsened the results:

For photographers and content makers, ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQA1A, most likely, will not work. Such professionals are better off looking for something with an IPS matrix, not necessarily in a higher price range.

10 bit mode is only available with a low refresh rate. Of course, the monitor supports HDR.

Manufacturer claims 178° viewing angles. The image behaves differently when viewed from the side or from above. Serizine effects are somewhat noticeable, the color loses some saturation at large angles, but the difference with cheap IPS monitors is negligible.

The advantages include the deepest and richest dark color. This is most noticeable at night. There are no typical overexposed areas that inexpensive IPS models suffer from. The VA does not reach the OLED matrix, but it’s nice that there is no serizny on a black background. The effect of “ghosting” is not strong, it is barely noticeable.

This monitor is positioned as a gaming monitor, as it shows itself during games and is it worth the attention of young gamers? We tested it with a computer based on AMD, MSI and Kingston components.

The high refresh rate makes itself felt. You can confidently set vertical sync and enjoy a stable 165 FPS in Forza. Horizon 5. Some video games are a little more demanding on the processor – the canonical Spiderman managed to play with 120-160 FPS.

This monitor places much higher demands on the computer than a 4K 60Hz TV. Ideally, some kind of RTX 4000 graphics card with support for frame generation will suit him. This will make it much easier to achieve the desired 165 FPS, even with a much weaker processor.

ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQA1A is the best choice for gaming. Its low cost and good balance of features attract many would-be gamers who want to leave Full HD in the annals of history as a reminder of the good old days. But for photographers, a high refresh rate will not be useful, especially with an average quality matrix.

Power consumption, heating

The 65 W power supply does the job easily. It only works at half its capacity in the most severe scenarios. Using a wattmeter, we measured the consumption of electricity. 23W in eco mode and 32-34W at 100% brightness are typical for 27″ VA monitors. The difference between 60 and 165 Hz modes is 2-4 watts.

And with these 30 watts, the regulators scare on the stickers, where the degree F is indicated (one of the worst). In fact, compared to models with other matrices, ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQA1A consumes a lot. A similar IPS monitor requires half the electricity (12-20 W).

But is it worth it to panic when the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card alone consumes ten times the monitor? Among VA models, the hero of the review is relatively economical.

The front panel heats up to 30° or more. The back wall remains cool thanks to the external power supply. The adapter itself is also cold, because it has a huge power reserve.
