Why would I need a constant voltage power supply?

Constant voltage power supplies are suitable for powering LEDs equipped with resistors or constant current drivers, which regulate the flow of current and may require a constant-voltage power supply when the desired operating voltage differs from the available power source (such as in homes or vehicles).  

For instance, LED light strips often incorporate current-regulating resistors. If the light strip operates within a range of 9-14.8 volts in direct current (DC), it can be directly connected to a 12-volt DC system in a vehicle without requiring a constant-voltage power supply. However, if you want to install the same light strip in a home with a 120-volt alternating current (AC) wiring system, you must reduce and convert the voltage from AC to DC using a power supply. 

In certain cases, constant-current drivers are available that match the voltage and current requirements of both the product and the power source (home, vehicle, etc.), eliminating the need for a constant-voltage power supply.

What are the differences between a power supply and a driver?

A driver and a power supply are the same thing. These terms are used interchangeably. Drivers tend to refer more to constant current power supplies.

Class 2 power supplies are considered less of a fire hazard and have less risk of causing electrical shocks.

On the other hand, IEC Class II refers to the internal construction of the power supply and its electrical insulation. With Class II power supplies, there are two layers of insulation, and they have a two-wire power cord.

LED strip is a universal device with which you can organize spectacular and efficient lighting for furniture, building facade, shop windows or any other object, structure. To install such devices requires a minimum of time. However, when connecting, you must follow some rules. First and foremost, you need to use power supplies for 12 Volt LED strips. These devices ensure the stability and correct functioning of the ice equipment.

Popular among buyers are models that are designed to consume constant 12V voltage. At the same time, the central power grid “gives out” 220 variable volts. The 12 V power supply for the LED strip acts as a “converter”, or rather, an intermediate “link” in the circuit. Connecting a tape without using a PSU is simply impossible.

Depending on your wishes, you can purchase a 12 V power supply for LED strip with different design solutions:

  • Sealed. These devices are intended for outdoor use. They have a sealed housing, respectively, are resistant to moisture, low temperatures and mechanical damage. As a rule, such PSUs are quite large.
  • Compact. A PSU of this type is used when organizing an indoor lighting system. They are small in size, so they are easy to “hide” in the interior.
  • Open. Power supplies of this type can only be used indoors, and they must be placed in special control panels. These models are the most affordable.

How to choose a power supply for a 12V or 24V LED strip – an article from Apeyron Elelctrics experts

Rules for choosing and installing power supplies: power calculation formula, protection class and number of devices.

Switching power supplies are designed to convert alternating voltage, which is used in the household electrical network (in apartments, offices, etc.) into direct voltage, which is necessary for the operation of LED strips. Also, the switching power supply lowers the voltage from 220V to 12V.

But before choosing a power supply for an LED strip, you need to decide on its type, length and power. How to choose the right ribbon, we wrote here.

If you chose a tape with a voltage of 12 or 24V, then you can select a power supply. And the first thing to start with is to determine its power, which is required in your case.

Formula for calculating the power of the power supply

The following formula is used to correctly select the power supply:

Power consumption per meter (W / m) * Required length of the LED strip (m) + 20% (power margin) = Unit power power (W).

An additional 20% is the power reserve that is needed to ensure stable operation of the power supply. Without a reserve, the unit at full load will operate at maximum power, which will lead to its overheating and rapid failure. If the power supply is overloaded, the overheating protection is activated. This causes the LED strip to flicker as the protection turns off the power supply (so that the unit cools down to a safe temperature).

Let’s take a look at a specific example.

LED strip art. 00-120. LED strip 12V, 8 W/m, SMD 2835, 60 d/m, IP20, 800 lm/m, substrate width 8mm, warm white color, required length – 2.5 meters.

We substitute the data in the formula:

Power consumption – 8 W / m * Required length – 2.5 m + 20% (power reserve) = 24 W. From the power supplies closest in power, we select a 25 W unit, art. 03-02.

Degree of protection against dust and moisture

When choosing a power supply, as well as when choosing the tape itself, take into account the class of dust and moisture protection. You can read more about the IP protection class here.

It is necessary that the power supply correspond not only to the declared power of the LED strip, but also to its dust and moisture protection class.

For normal dry environments (eg bedrooms) there are many standard IP20 power supplies available.

The housing of these units is made of aluminium, iron or other metal and has holes on the top for additional cooling. Such power supplies are only minimally protected from dust or other small particles and not at all protected from moisture.

Sealed power supplies (class IP65 and IP67) are used for placement in places of high humidity, in industrial premises, as well as for outdoor placement. In this case, we are talking not only about the bathroom, but also about the kitchen, where there is often high humidity.

The electrical circuitry in these power supplies is completely sealed with a waterproof compound, but their degree of moisture protection varies depending on the class:

  • IP65 – Protected against ingress of water, but not immersed.
  • IP67 – protected from water penetration, with the possibility of short-term immersion to a depth of 1 meter.

Please note: the protection of the block does not protect the contacts, so sometimes they need to be additionally sealed.

And one more important thing – hermetic blocks are filled with compound and have a low degree of heat dissipation. For better cooling, when connecting high power tapes and/or using units in enclosed spaces, it is necessary to use additional forced ventilation with external fans.

One large power supply or several small power supplies

There is a practical difference in using one large power supply or several small power supplies.

Several low-power power supplies

When connecting a long and high-power LED strip in ordinary rooms where additional sound insulation is needed (bedrooms, rest rooms, etc.), it is recommended to use several low-power power supplies.

These units are compact in size and fit in a small space. Their housing allows for cooling without the use of forced ventilation. But for better heat dissipation, it is necessary to provide additional free space around such blocks (usually 20 cm is enough on all sides).

One powerful power supply

One powerful power supply can be used to connect a long and powerful LED strip.

These power supplies are used in places where there is space to install units of this size and there is general background noise (offices, shops, etc.).

To remove the generated heat in such units, active ventilation is required: an external or built-in fan (cooler), which can create a number of inconveniences when used in quiet rooms (bedrooms and rest areas).

Features of installing power supplies

When choosing a power supply, it is necessary to take into account its design and overall parameters, such as housing design (standard flat and wide or long and thin).

It is also necessary to ensure ventilation and comply with fire safety requirements, provide for access during subsequent operation and limit the possibility of accidental contact of children with the unit.

It is not recommended to install power supplies near heaters and equipment that generates heat (eg room batteries). Blocks cannot be stacked on top of each other. The minimum distance between connected power supplies must be 20 cm or more.
