In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we evaluate each espresso maker for ease of use, brew time, consistency, taste, temperature and noise level. To find the best home espresso machine, we have tested over 35 espresso machines in the last few decades. And in our most recent test, we rounded up well over 20 espresso machines in the Lab, brewing more than 60 cups of espresso.

To find the top performers, we test the timing and temperature of multiple espressos made in a row and note the quality of the crema. We also rate the flavor and smoothness of each drink. If the machine includes a milk frother, we test it with both skim and oat milk. Where applicable, we use the machine’s preset options to make cappuccinos and lattes to compare the milk ratio of each and to assess the quality of the frothing.

Our favorite machines are easy to set up, simple to use without a user manual, quick to heat up and reasonably fast to brew. The best machines produced a hot, smooth cup of espresso that had nice depth and wasn’t too bitter or acidic with crema that was smooth without any noticeable air bubbles.

What type of espresso machine is right for me?

An espresso machine is an investment — especially if you want one with all the bells and whistles. There are several ways to make espresso with manual, semi-automatic, automatic, super-automatic and pod machines all available to the home barista, so it’s important to consider the type that fits your needs.

✔️ Manual machines require finely ground beans that are scooped into a portafilter and tamped down. The filter is attached to the brew head and a lever is used to manually pull water through the grounds. It is the most customizable method but arguably the most difficult to master.

✔️ Semi-automatic machines are similar to manual machines in terms of preparation, but they operate with a button or dial that automates the water flow instead of a lever, and the size of the brew is controllable.

✔️ Automatic machines use a button instead of a lever to brew espresso. The size of the espresso or coffee drink is automated and often programmable. This method offers more consistency than a manual or semi-automatic machine, making them super easy to use and nabbing top scores in Lab tests.

✔️ Super-automatic machines are a step above automatic machines. In addition to automated and programmable coffee sizes, they can also grind beans, measure them out and often tamp them for you. These tended to be our favorite in Lab testing for their do-it-all performance.

✔️ Capsule machines use pods filled with pre-measured coffee to make espresso or other coffee drinks. They offer the most consistency and hands-off ease of use.

What to look for when shopping for the best espresso machine

✔️ Size: Consider how much space you have to allocate to your espresso maker. The more customizable ones are usually bigger while the smaller ones are typically more straightforward with fewer brewing options.

✔️ Price: A good espresso maker with features like a built-in grinder and multiple drink options can be expensive; a simple machine is usually more affordable. However, some espresso makers that seem straightforward but make a good and balanced cup can be costly due to higher-quality materials and more effective heaters, milk frothers or technology.

✔️ Coffee grinder: Grinding your coffee beans right before pulling a shot is ideal for a good cup of espresso. Espresso machines with built-in coffee grinders are convenient, reduce some mess and ensure you have freshly ground coffee beans each time you pull a shot. One downside is that built-in grinders are hard to fix if they break and often lead people to purchase an entirely new machine.

✔️ Milk frother: There are two common types of milk frothers: a hand frothing wand that requires manual milk frothing in a pitcher or an attached milk container that the machine utilizes to automatically froth milk and add it directly into your cup. With a manual frothing wand, you can practice your latte art, but it does take some practice to learn how to froth milk properly right from the start. An attached milk container with automatic frothing takes out all the guesswork giving you a cappuccino at the right temperature with a good amount of foam automatically.

✔️ Clean-up: Depending on the model, espresso makers tend to be easy to clean. Some super-automatic machines take the work out of routine cleaning, while more manual machines require daily cleaning of the portafilter, milk frother and more. Some super-automatic machines have milk containers that connect to the machine with a straw, which can be tricky to clean, and large drip trays that can be cumbersome. You will also need to descale your machine every couple of months (or as recommended by the manufacturer) to ensure your espresso machine is operating properly and your coffee is tasting great.

✔️ Pressure: The amount of pressure exerted upon coffee grounds is measured by BARs or barometric pressure. While some machines will have up to 19-BARs, a machine that exerts around 7-11 BARs of pressure will produce a good extraction.

I enjoy from time to time a frothy cappuccino, even though my daily habitual coffee is a neat espresso with a tiny bit of sugar. I prepare my cappuccino using my semi-automatic espresso machine. I pull an espresso and froth some milk and then combine them. Simple enough. Wouldn’t be lovely though, if I could push a button and the machine does all of that for me?

This is the subject of this article. We review the best home cappuccino machines, De’Longhi, Mr. Coffee, Nespresso and Breville from all price ranges. We look at solutions to make a cappuccino for all budgets, and styles. The only criteria is that the solution has some sort of automation to make the process of preparing a cappuccino easier and faster.

I know we can make a cappuccino with an espresso machine. I do that every so often. But I worked as a barista, and pulling an espresso shot and frothing some milk is for me second nature. This is not the case for everyone. In fact, I have friends and family who operating a semi-auto is not something they would ever do in their life.

Getting back to our topic, lets see how to choose a cappuccino maker. What criteria should we consider when picking a specific machine?

How to Choose your Home Cappuccino Maker?

Not an easy way to answer that question. It is easier when you know the person, their personality, budget, and barista skills. But when you write about it, you need to consider all budgets and all barista skills. A great semiautomatic espresso machine is good for me, but for mostly everybody else in my circle is a definitive no.

Basic Cappuccino Recipe

According to Wikia, the recipe calls for 2 thirds of milk and one-third espresso. The Italian Espresso National Institute defines cappuccino as a drink made from 25 ml. of espresso and 100 ml. of steam and foamed milk.

At the end of the day, if you can brew a shot of espresso and get some steamed and frothed milk, you have your cappuccino. We have our cappuccino recipe, if you want to review the ration between textured milk and espresso, but the simplest way to describe the recipe is one part steamed milk, one part foamed, (frothed), milk, and one part espresso.

Buying Criteria

When buying a home cappuccino maker, the most important criteria are: the budget, the automation level, (expected convenience), durability and reliability, and brewing precision. Some are mutually exclusive, for instance, you can’t have a lower budget, if you want a fully automatic cappuccino maker. But let’s dive deeper into these criteria, this will help later when making a decision.

From the convenience perspective, the best are the capsule-based espresso makers, with an integrated milk frother. With semi-automatics, you have the most control over the preparation, from espresso pulling to milk frothing.

You have some control with super automatic machines as well, just not as much as with semi-auto. The pod machines are conceived to make it easy for you. This is the reason you have the least control over the brewing process.

Let’s go through each of these criteria and discuss them. If you already know what you want, skip to the reviews, for our suggestions.

Brewing Precision

If you ask me, brewing precision is the most important, but for most of my readers, the precise taste is not as important. A frothy caffeinated beverage will do, even if it’s not perfect. And this is understandable, life is fast, and coffee perfection is just for hobbyists.

But if you want perfection, you need to buy a semi-automatic espresso machine, and dust off your barista skills. If this sounds too much, let me tell you this: most people don’t notice a difference between a perfect cappuccino and one made with an automatic espresso machine.

But if we are to rank the precision among the various ways of making a cappuccino, here it is:

  1. The best for perfect cappuccino: semiautomatic espresso machine with professional steam wand.
  2. Automatic espresso machine with pro steam wand
  3. Semi-auto with panarello tip
  4. Super-automatic espresso machine
  5. Capsule based espresso maker with a separate milk frother
  6. Moka pot, or AeroPress with a milk frother

As I said before, a semiauto doesn’t really qualify as a cappuccino machine, because it is not a specialized equipment. So we have a little paradox: the perfect cappuccino comes from a coffee equipment that is not technically a cappuccino maker. Okay, these are semantics, but I insisted so that we are on the same page.


This might be the one deciding factor when choosing a cappuccino maker, and it might affect your ability to get what you want.

Forget for a minute what I said in my brewing precision. There are machines that can combine perfection and convenience, but these machines are very expensive. Jura Giga 6 costs a whooping 6k for the ultimate convenience and perfection. And if you have the budget, please don’t hesitate a second. It’s going to be worth every penny.

For the rest of us with more modest budgets, careful consideration of all our needs is the best.


If you want absolute convenience, the super-automatic is the best way to go. If you want both convenience and perfection, you need a solid budget, there are other options less expensive than the Jura Giga 6, but they are still a few thousand dollars.

If convenience is a must and you don’t need absolute espresso perfection, a capsule based espresso is a decent option. As I said, many people don’t even notice a difference between capsule based and classic espresso. This option is one of the best for a low budget equipment purchase, but will turn into an expensive option in time. We have a price comparison in our article about espresso vs Nespresso.

The cheapest solution for a home made cappuccino is a Moka pot and a manual milk frother. But we are not reviewing that here. And that is not a convenience winner, it actually feels like a chore for those who need an uncomplicated morning.

Now that you probably have an idea how to choose your next cappuccino maker, let’s see what’s the best equipment you money can buy.

Super Automatic Cappuccino and Espresso Machines

You can choose a specialized super automatic machine that can be programmed to deliver a highly customized coffee drink. Yes, one of those is expensive, but if convenience is your friend, it’s worth to spend the money. The super-automatics can do many types of coffee beverages, and the advanced ones can even be programmed to deliver personalized drinks.

These machines have a built-in coffee grinder, an espresso brewer, and a milk frother. Everything happens automatically, but you can customize your coffee by modifying the brewing parameters. A super automatic espresso machine is the best option for the coffee lover with a generous budget. It offers convenience and a good control over the preparation of your cappuccino.

The cheaper models will have less options to tweak your espresso shot, and your final beverage. They will end up as decent approximations of the caffe quality cappuccino. The more expensive models can tweak your cappuccino to perfection, and you can save the settings for future use.

Some super automatics will be touchless, while other require you to mix the coffee with the textured milk, but the two components are prepare automatically for you.

Super-automatic espresso machines will allow you to choose between single and double shots, tweak the strength and volume of your drink, and generally are the best option for those who seek convenience.

When you budget, and the super-automatic seems too expensive, don’t forget to take in consideration that you also need to spend on a good grinder, if you buy a semi-auto. A decent grinder will bump up your budget, and you can’t skimp on it.

The next leap in domestic cappuccino makers is to the fully automatic machines. With the Delonghi ESAM3300, everything is done for you. You choose the coffee you want and wait for it to pour.

There are no capsules required. It is extremely easy and painless preparing your morning coffee in this way.

The built-in grinder will grind on demand each time a coffee is prepared. The coffee dosing and tamping are also done automatically, for you inside the machine.

The milk frothing is still done separately, which can be a deterrent for the absolute convenience seeker. You will have to froth milk manually.

For a completely automated brewing, from pulling the espresso shot, to frothing the milk and adding it to the drink, you need to spend a little more money. This machine allows you tweak your cappuccino in a few ways. Compared to a capsule based, it is a big step up, because it allows you to make a perfect cappuccino. You can adjust your grind, for a perfect extraction. You can change your dose for an extra kick or tweak the extraction time, and you can adjust the volume of your espresso for a longer drink, or a shorter one. You can also save these settings in the machine’s memory for a repeatable experience.

The third option, the capsule-based cappuccino maker, is the most convenient of the three. The espresso purists will say that you aren’t getting a real espresso out of these but trust me, you won’t notice a difference; unless you are a coffee cupper by trade.

Do I use these machines? Yes, I use one of these at work, and it works great for the espresso, latte, and cappuccino lovers.

I prefer the semi-automatic, but not all my coworkers know how to operate a semiautomatic. Everybody finds the Nespresso machine convenient and easy to use. Capsule based espresso machines are the best for convenience and consistency. You will get the same cup every time, you can’t miss.

This espresso machine is probably the cheapest investment to get your morning fix without giving up on quality. However, you have to note that the coffee pods are not cheap, and the more you use the machine that more expensive it gets, compared to manual machines, or super automatics.

This option is a compact machine, but very few of them are equipped with a built-in milk frother, so that is a little extra piece on your kitchen counter, and a little bump up on the budget.

DeLonghi Lattissima Plus Nespresso Capsule System

The Lattissima Nespresso system is the most convenient way to prepare a cappuccino or a latte. The capsule-based espresso makers are one of the greatest inventions for the home cappuccino maker market. Every aspect of the preparation is fully automated and optimized for consistent results. Because of this, many restaurants are starting to use this type of machines to replace the commercial semiautomatics.

An argument against the capsule-based espresso is the inability to customize the pulled shot. While for espresso aficionados this is a must, for the vast majority of cappuccino lovers, the consistency is the only thing that matters.

You can also choose the complete opposite of the automation, which is a semiautomatic. With a semi-automatic, you need to do the legwork, and most importantly, you need serious barista skills. The name is a little confusing for the uninitiated barista; it gives you the impression that the machine is easier to use than a manual espresso machine. So you think that: “It can’t be that hard.”

The semi-automatic espresso machine is the best option for the coffee geek, or the wannabe barista, who want to control all the steps of the cappuccino brewing.

If you want an automatic-manual espresso maker, the BES980XL – Oracle is a great machine. The name doesn’t make sense, I know. Which one it is, automatic or manual? If you read my Breville Oracle review here, you will understand. The Breville Oracle price is about double the BES870, but the Oracle is a double boiler machine.

Mr. Coffee BVMC-ECMP1000 Espresso Maker – Automatic Milk Frother

Retailing under $200 on Amazon, the Mr. Coffee Barista Espresso Maker has the best ratio between the convenience, price, and features.

With an automatic frother, a feature only seen with more expensive machines, it is very close to perfect convenience, as you would expect from a home cappuccino maker.

You still have to grind coffee, tamp, and clean the machine after using it, but on the other hand, you have absolute control over your espresso. Mr. Coffee’s machine cannot compete for convenience with the Lattissima line from Nespresso.

I consider it a happy medium between a cheap machine such as the De’Longhi’s ECC155 and Lattissima. It will let you brew a decent espresso with fresh beans, or prepare milk-based drinks, like lattes and cappuccinos while still run on a tight schedule.

After carefully considering all the options, I believe that semiautomatic espresso machines should not even make our list. I included them because they do make the best cappuccinos, they just need more work from you. You can make a great cappuccino with a semiautomatic, but unless you are a barista or a coffee enthusiast, the process takes time and skills. This is the reason an automated machine is the way to go.

Beware of Cheap Machines

When you are shopping, and you have a tight budget, the natural choice is to go for the least expensive machines. Nothing wrong with that, but preparing cappuccino requires two things: real espresso, and frothed milk. Real espresso cannot be brewed with a steam espresso machine, or with a Moka pot.

Cappuccino is a drink that features the espresso. Authentic and tasty cappuccino is made with real espresso.

Frothed milk is relatively easy to make with the steamer of a semiautomatic espresso machine, but many specialized machines come with an automatic milk frother.

In conclusion: Yes, try to save some money, but don’t get the cheapest machine, if you want the real thing. If you absolutely have to cut the budget to minimum, try this guide on espresso alternatives.

Instead of Conclusion

Which of these machines is the winner? I’ll let you decide. On one hand, the price, the ease of use and overall taste of Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista is a great buy. An automatic milk frother, real espresso for those who don’t like capsules, all of this while maintaining an affordable price. Remember though, that for both the Mr. Coffee Barista and the ECC155, you will need to budget for a decent grinder too. That means another 150$ expense.

The super automatic ESAM3300 Magnifica is one of the most reliable on the market. When you compare it to the Nespresso Lattissima, you will notice that, although is a super automatic machine, is less automated than the Lattissima.

So why pay the extra couple of hundred dollars? Firstly, it’s going to be cheaper in the long run, because you don’t need capsules. Equally important for some, you do have more control over the brewing process with the ESAM3300. For just $100 more, the Philips machine is fully automatic, and the preprogrammed drink buttons make your home barista work really easy.

In my eyes, the real winner here is the Nespresso Lattissima, mostly because of the convenience. Many espresso lovers, however, consider that is nearly impossible to grind beans, seal it in a capsule and preserve all the good properties of the coffee.

Espresso is the basis of all coffee drinks. The name of the classic type of coffee comes from the Italian “espresso”, which means “squeeze” in Russian. The drink literally displays its name, as it is prepared from roasted, ground and compressed coffee beans, through which water is passed under a pressure of 9 atmospheres. The main characteristic of this coffee is precisely the speed of preparation.

Classic espresso usually has a volume of 25-35 ml and is served in a 60 or 70 ml demitasse cup. A traditional serving of espresso includes a small glass of water. This is necessary to cleanse the taste buds in order to better experience the taste of coffee. Classic espresso is supposed to be drunk hot in small sips.

Dopio is a double shot of espresso – 60 ml, prepared from 14-18 grams of coffee.


A concentrated version of espresso. From Italian “ristretto” is translated as “strong”.

It requires the same amount of coffee as espresso, but less water. Ristretto is prepared on the same professional coffee machine, using the same method as espresso. The difference is also that the pressurized water passes through the coffee bean powder for a strictly limited time (15 seconds).

A frothy drink takes about half a standard cup of espresso. It is designed literally for 1-2 sips. The drink is usually served with a glass of cold drinking water.


Lungo is another type of espresso. Coffee is prepared in the same way, but with an increased amount of water, due to the longer duration of the passage. The taste of lungo is more bitter, but less strong than espresso. Contains more caffeine than espresso, as the coffee extract is much higher.


Americano is a classic espresso in which hot water is added.__ An important point is that water does not pass through the coffee tablet, but is added to the finished drink.

There is a popular version of the appearance of the drink. In the final phase of the Second World War, when the Americans entered Italy, they demanded large servings of coffee in local cafes, not understanding the tradition of Italians to drink strong drink in small volumes. The bartenders responded by diluting the standard espresso shot with hot water. The resulting mixture was called “americano”.

The essence of preparation is that ready-made espresso is diluted with hot water in a ratio of 1:3. The volume of a serving of americano is 150-200 ml.

The Americano can be made with a single or double espresso. In those coffee shops that focus on good taste, they make americano on a double tab. If a company works with 100% Arabica, they also make Americanos with double espresso. The result is usually 130-150 milliliters of drink.

Note that Americano is often confused with lungo, which, in fact, is an ordinary espresso with the addition of hot water. The alternative is to pour hot water into the finished espresso in an Americano. When preparing lungo, all the water passes through the ground coffee.

Long Black

Long Black is a coffee drink similar to Americano. When preparing an Americano, first espresso is poured into the cup, and then hot water, with Long Black – the reverse process – a double portion of espresso is added to the hot water.


Cappuccino (from Italian cappuccino – capuchin) is an espresso-based coffee drink of Italian origin with the addition of milk and milk foam. There is a widespread story that cappuccino was invented by the Monk-Capuchins of one of the monasteries north of Rome. Unlike “good old England”, the monks drank coffee only with milk.

Cappuccino is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 hot milk and 1/3 milk foam. A standard serving of cappuccino is five to seven ounces, or 150-180 milliliters. For cappuccino, frothed milk is poured into espresso. The milk foam on top of the drink acts as an insulator and helps keep the heat in. In order for the foam to turn out right, the temperature of the milk that is taken for whipping should be + 4 ° C.

It is customary to drink cappuccino without additional sweeteners, as milk softens the taste of caffeine.


Latte is a cocktail consisting of espresso, milk and airy milk foam. Translated from Italian, the word latte (Latte) means “milk”. The difference between latte and cappuccino lies in the technology of preparation, proportions, additives.

For a latte, whisk hot milk, pour into a cup, and only then add the coffee base. You can add any syrups to the drink (except citrus, as milk turns sour because of it). The drink is usually served in a tall glass tumbler with a long ice cream scoop and straw.

By the way, latte is the most popular in Russia.

Coffee shop patrons now prefer sweetened milky coffee drinks. Among the most popular are classic cappuccinos and lattes, as well as author’s ones, primarily rafs. At the same time, girls, for example, prefer to drink coffee with mint syrup, while men choose caramel. The share of black coffee (espresso and americano) is 15%, the remaining 5% are alternative coffees.

Latte macchiato

Latte macchiato is a three-layer milk-coffee drink. The proportions of the ingredients are the same as in the classic latte recipe. The main difference is that the parts of latte macchiato are not mixed. The bottom layer is hot milk, the middle layer is espresso, and the top layer is high milk foam, which is sprinkled with cocoa powder or chocolate chips.

Flat White

Flat White is a special type of cappuccino made by adding frothed milk to a single or double ristretto. The birthplace of the drink is Australia.

The milk is frothed with a minimum amount of foam (0.5 cm), which creates a very thin layer of coffee-based foam. As a result, a flat white surface is formed, which in translation into English sounds nothing more than “Flat White”. The drink is tart, like espresso, but less milky, compared to latte and cappuccino.


Raf coffee is a coffee-based dessert drink (a cocktail of espresso, sugar and cream). A feature of the recipe is vanilla flavor and a homogeneous structure.

Raf is a Russian invention. It was invented in 1996-1997 at Coffee Bean, the first coffee house in Moscow, opened according to the American model. There is a version that one of the regular guests of the coffee shop, Rafael, asked him to “think up something”, and the barista prepared coffee with cream and vanilla sugar. The drink began to be called “raf” in honor of the guest.

Most often in Russian coffee houses it is designated as “author’s coffee”.

The main feature of raff coffee is that the ingredients are mixed, and only after that they are whipped into a homogeneous drink, where the main thing is not a frothy head (as in cappuccino), but a smooth consistency. In the classic version, it consists of 50 ml of espresso, 100 ml of cream 10% and 1 tsp. vanilla sugar.


Frappe is a cold coffee-based cocktail. Frappe is native to Greece. This drink does not have a traditional recipe. It necessarily includes two components: coffee and crushed ice. Proper cold frappe coffee has a light, thick foam. It can be decorated with cocoa powder, ground coffee, chocolate chips, berries, nutmeg or cinnamon.


Mochachino is a coffee drink with a pronounced chocolate flavor. In general, mochachino is two-thirds espresso, the rest is milk and chocolate, cocoa, cream and additional components according to the recipe.

The word “mocaccino” has Italian roots, but the birthplace of the drink is actually America. In the states, it appeared thanks to especially demanding bar patrons who are not ready to drink too strong espresso. It was then that bartenders began to add whipped cream, milk and chocolate to the drink. It is noteworthy that the Americans themselves call this drink “mocha”, or “mocha”.


Macchiato is a layered coffee cocktail based on strong black coffee, preferably espresso, and frothed milk. The name of the drink is closely related to its appearance: “macchiato” in Italian means “spotted”. Sometimes this drink is called the “little brother of cappuccino”.

It differs from cappuccino primarily in that the milk foam is laid out on it in small spoons and therefore stains.


Glace is a dessert, chilled coffee with ice cream. The name of the drink comes from the French verb “glacé”, which literally means “icy, frozen”, and more roughly – “chilled”.

In the classic version of the drink, the coffee needs to be cooled down to about 10°C after brewing. Then the coffee is poured into a glass, after which ice cream is added (it makes up about 25% of the total mass). Grated chocolate, candy chips, coconut flakes, ground cinnamon, nuts or cocoa powder can also be used as additional ingredients.

Cold Brew

Cold Brew is a coffee drink based on cold extraction coffee. In the classic version, coffee is infused for 12 hours at a temperature of 5-10 degrees Celsius. On the basis of cold brew, nitro coffee is most often made, that is, coffee with gaseous nitrogen, which has a creamy flavor, has a pleasant texture and looks like strong beer.
