GPS Drones: Everything You Need to Know
GPS drones have become a new direction for the advancement of many consumer drones. GPS drones will help drone pilots to better control drones, so who knows GPS drones?
What Is A GPS Drone?
GPS drones are equipped with a GPS module inside the drone, allowing them to know their position relative to a network of orbiting satellites. Connected to the signals of these satellites, the drone can perform functions such as positioning, autonomous flight, return-to-home and waypoint navigation.
How Do GPS Drones Work?
First, the GPS module is used to receive signals. A global network of orbiting satellites transmits signals received by the GPS module via radio receivers. These signals allow the module to determine its position, velocity and time. Access to more signals and systems increases the accuracy of positioning, thereby improving all GPS related functions of the drone.
How Much Is A GPS Drone?
For drone beginners, maybe you just want to learn the fun of drone flying. Toy drones or regular consumer drones? The low cost of toy drones makes it difficult to carry GPS modules. Typically, drones with GPS modules cost upwards of $200.
Do I Need A Drone With GPS?
For drone pilots, the need for a drone with GPS depends on your purpose. Most drone pilots will want more after they experience a drone flight. drones with GPS modules can improve the performance of drones and be used in more scenarios.
Flight Stability
Installing GPS on your drone can help the quadcopter fly stably, using GPS can help the drone maintain a high hover, if it finds that it has drifted off its original position, it will automatically correct and return to the mid-air same location.
The same principle applies to the stability of the drone in the wind. In light wind conditions, GPS helps the drone to maintain its course more smoothly and stably by identifying its position.
Altitude Hold
For drone beginners, it can be troublesome to practice the altitude hold of the drone. The drone with GPS can precisely locate the drone, and this altitude limit is preset in the flight control. Autel’s novice mode uses this principle, limiting altitude to 30 meters.
RTH
The return-to-home feature is one of the best features for beginner pilots. A drone with RTH will remember and return to its exact take-off position.
If the battery of the drone is too low, the signal from the Autel controller is interrupted, and the connection with the controller is completely lost, you can use the one-key return-to-home function of the GPS drone to bring your drone home.

Flight Log Report
Many GPS drones create a flight log of each flight – when it flew, where it flew, etc. This only helps with record keeping, but also helps locate and recover crashed drones. You can access the flight log through the controller or controller app and determine the last known GPS position. Your drone will most likely be there, or not too far away.
Waypoint Navigation
Many advanced drones can create flight paths that allow the drone to automatically plan flight shots along the route. This is inseparable from the GPS function. Every time the drone creates a waypoint, it is a specific GPS coordinate. The autonomous flight mode of the GPS drone not only allows the drone to accurately travel along the established route, but also can hover and shoot at the waypoint. A great feature for drone photographers.
Waypoint navigation is used in most commercial drones, and many areas require the use of drones with GPS when performing aerial operations. Surveying, inspection, construction, and agriculture all feature drones with GPS.
Mapping Function
When the drone performs surveying, mapping and mapping tasks, the GPS module plays a vital role in marking objects by the drone. When using the 3D mapping function for an object, although RTK/PPK will lock the position of the object more accurately, accurate to 0.1cm, the drone with GPS function will make the positioning of the drone more accurate.

New Rules For Drones: Drone Remote ID
On April 21, 2021, the U. S. FAA officially introduced new drone Remote ID requirements. Part of compliance with the new law requires all drones to broadcast their GPS coordinates, so by October 2023 all your drones will need GPS!

Drone Jammers. How to be saved? And save the quadcopter. EhoDrone
Drone Jammers. How to be saved?
Drone jammers, even without a directional antenna, it completely jammed the copter at 300 meters.
Airbus has released a “drone killer” system that can automatically monitor space and neutralize drones by jamming their signal. The system can analyze the signal to figure out where the machine is being controlled from.
What are the drone jammers?
Several types are known today:
The first type is devices that completely “blind” the quadcopter – they suppress all signals to and from the drone, also blocking GPS, compass and generally everything that is possible. In this case, the drone, having lost the signal, may try to return home, but in the absence of GPS coordinates, its behavior can only be predicted. Sometimes it can just hang and drift with the wind. At the end of the battery charge includes auto-landing. If there is enough height, it will sit down, if not, it will be much worse. In any case, the only way to find it is a third-party GPS tracker with a SIM card, which will send coordinates when you call or SMS. But, be careful – recently you can also get for such devices.
The second type is systems that jam the GPS signal.
Can turn on spontaneously, in which case the drone “loses” satellites, switching to ATTI mode – that is, without holding the point. The control will be noticeably different, when you release the stick, the copter will not stop moving further until you manually slow it down. Also, the wind will have a significant impact on its behavior (especially when hovering). Those who started flying on homemade devices are in an advantageous position here, but people who grew up on boxed versions can be left without a drone even with such a not-so-terrible jammer. By the way, he will be able to keep the height on his own, since the barometer is responsible for its retention.
What to do if you come across just such a jammer?
Tip: First of all, don’t panic and don’t press the “Return Home” button. This will not help anyway, because GPS coordinates are not available, and therefore it will most likely fly where the “eyes” look. But you still have access to signals from the camera (if the drone is out of sight). Slowly turning around, determine the direction where it is convenient to land, noticeable objects and start moving in their direction. As you approach, lower the camera down – try to keep to the landing point, look at the screen, and only at the last meters switch to the “visual” mode.
Systems that replace GPS coordinates.
Although the devices are technically complex, the principle of operation is very simple. When they are turned on, the coordinates on a given area are replaced by the coordinates of the airport. Why is that? Everything is very simple. The lion’s share of the sold devices is made up of DJI products, which have the coordinates of most of the large (and even private) airfields in the firmware. “Once”, as the drone thinks, in the airport area, the copter proceeds to an immediate landing.
How to get out of the situation?
Tip: Don’t panic. The first thing to do is turn off auto-landing. It is not always possible to do this completely, but the first thing to do is toggle the flight mode change toggle switch back and forth. Sometimes you need to do this several times. It will not be easy to control, the device itself will try to land as quickly as possible, so the gas stick will have to be held up, the reaction to the sticks will be extremely weak, wind should also be added here, the camera stabilization system may be turned off. Focus on objects, if there is someone you know, it is better to send them to a meeting.
Do’s and Don’ts : Don’t wait for the drone to descend. Since he does not have real coordinates, and they are replaced by artificial ones, he will not receive data on his displacement either. Accordingly, it will be blown away by the wind. Under no circumstances should you press “ return home ”. There are no coordinates and where he will fly is completely unknown.
Electromagnetic pulse generators.
The essence of the operation of such devices is in a short-term pulse, which confuses the drone’s compass. Having fallen under the influence of such a system, the drone is likely to turn off the GPS hold mode and go into Atti. In principle, this is the same as flying in the absence of satellites, but with the difference that the drone will lose the ability to fly straight.
What to do? If the drone is within sight and above the level of trees and other objects, slowly move the sticks around and understand which side it is turned. Or looking at the monitor – we are looking for a point at home and start moving, while adjusting the course in case of deviation. Having established visual contact, we descend and land. The barometer is still responsible for the height, so it is possible to land softly enough.
What not to do: As in the previous cases, do not press the RTH button. In the absence of a compass, even with GPS coordinates, the drone will not be able to understand which direction to fly. Often this ends up flying in a diverging spiral with increasing distance from the right place.
If the return of adequate control is still not possible, the situation gets out of control, the drone is moving towards water, roads, dangerous objects, and even more crowds – the only option is to turn off the motors. Of course, it is necessary to evaluate the consequences of such an action, because the drone will fall like a stone and, with its mass, can also harm both other people’s property and people.
Unbelievable but true – the easiest way to avoid jammers is not to fly where they might be . But, if you really want to fly where it is possible, you should not do it, you need to try to follow some rules.
- always be ready to turn on the jammer
- always watch not only the picture on the screen, but also the warnings on the screen, as well as telemetry readings.
How do you know if your drone is jammed?
First of all, on the disappearance of satellites. In the case of a substitution, the real ones first disappear and fake ones appear. Also in case of GPS jamming. Satellites can disappear at a certain height.
As soon as you feel something is wrong, you don’t have to wait for everything to be fine. Most likely it won’t. Start descending. Since a significant part of the jammers work starting from a height of 30 meters (and the upper limit is unknown), you should not try to fly higher and closer to the satellites.
If you succeed in landing, do not take off again. The second time may not work.
It is more difficult with electromagnetic generators, because they work precisely, they do not turn on for a long time. Thankfully there aren’t too many of them yet. In addition, various industrial equipment, the influence of power lines, power plants and other things are often taken for the operation of generators.
You should carefully choose the place where the drone takes off from and where you have to land. If you climb through a small window between trees, not everyone will be able to land a drone there in case of an emergency.
Study the area. Check for the presence of various government departments, factories and other “bad” objects. It is worth taking folk maps like wikimapia.org as a basis – there is more data than on “satellite” Google maps.
On some forums, it is advised to remove the No Fly Zone restrictions, in which case the copter will not land immediately if you fall under a jammer that replaces the coordinates, but this way you lose the warranty and if you fly in a prohibited place or airport, you will receive a good fine.
If the drone still does not see more than 6 satellites on the ground (in our time with GPS there should be many more), you should not take off at all in the hope that they will appear.
